Kate C. Clark
Died: 01/29/1999

Kate C. Clark, of Dayton, died Friday, Jan. 29, 1999, in a local nursing home. She was 89.

She was of the Baptist Faith and was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Clark, Sr.; daughters, Wanda Patricks, Betty Griffin; and son, Pete Price.

Survivors include her daughter, Dorothy Moore of Dayton; sons, Jimmy Price of Hobart, Ind., and Junior Clark of Dayton; 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Revs. Robert Lands and Clyde Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow the services in Spence Cemetery. The family will receive visitors after 2 p.m. Saturday, and all day Sunday. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of arrangements.

Annie Elizabeth Walker
Died: 02/01/1999

Annie Elizabeth (Mathis) Walker, of Dayton, died in a local hospital Monday, Feb. 1, 1999. She was 84.

A lifelong resident of Rhea County, she was a member of the Rhea County Independent Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Lee Walker; two sons, James Freeman Walker and Billy Louis Walker; five brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include three sons, Jimmy Rodgers Walker, Claude Anderson Walker and Clyde Leon Walker, all of Dayton; two daughters, Corrina Reba Dye of Grandview and Edith Pauline Jenkins of Dayton; sister, Martha Moon of Westland, Mich.; brother, Allen Mathis of Florida; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Felix Harris and Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow the services in Wolf Creek Cemetery. The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, from 6 to 9 p.m. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of arrangements.

Eugene Austin
Died: 02/06/1999

Eugene Austin, of Dayton, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, at Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. He was 77.

Mr. Austin was a member of Dayton First Baptist Church and American Legion Brady Williams Post #100. He was retired from John Oster Corp. after 21 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Austin of Dayton; daughter, Cynthia Travis of Dayton; son, Joe Austin of Dayton; brother, Wallace Austin of Harriman, Tenn.; sisters, Helen Jewell and Billie June Austin, both of Dayton; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Milton Knox officiating. Burial followed the services in Smyrna Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Richard Eakins
Died: 01/23/1999

Richard Eakins, of Dalton, Ga., died at his home Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999. He was 70.

He was a member of Kelly Grove Baptist Church and was retired from Shipley Basket Factory in Dayton.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Eakins of Dalton, Ga.; three daughters, Remona Horn of Nashville, Deborah Bowers of Bedford, Texas, and Ann Rodriguez of Dalton, Ga.; son, Larry Richard Eakins of Dayton; brother, Ray Eakins of Dayton; four sisters, Jeanelle Brice of Pennsylvania, Isabell Clingan of Dayton; Dorothy Wilson and Juanitia Colbaugh, all of Dayton; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Ray Arnold officiating. Interment followed the services in Spring City Memorial Cemetery. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Allen E. Phillips
Died: 01/24/1999

Allen E. (Heavy) Phillips, of Dayton, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 77.

Mr. Phillips owned and operated Phillips Jeweler’s in Dayton for 53 years. He was of the Baptist Faith and was preceded in death by his son, Bob Phillips.

Survivors include his wife, Edna (Fine) Phillips of Dayton; son, Billy R. Phillips of Pikeville, Tenn.; sister, Della Solomon of Athens, Tenn.; two brothers, Joe and R.T. Phillips, both of Crossville, Tenn.; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Albert Gentry and Rev. Robert Lands officiating. Burial followed the services in Rhea Memory Gardens in Dayton. Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Frances G. Bowes
Died: 02/07/1999

Frances G. Bowes, of Dayton, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, at Spring City Health Care Center. She was 75.

Born Dec. 21, 1923, in Graysville, she was the daughter of Dinah Pierce Bean and Ray Charles Bean. She lived in New York, N.Y., for approximately 30 years, and lived in Rhea County for the past 20 years. She attended Ables Business School in Dayton. She was retired from the civil service, working at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., until being transferred to Chicago and later moving to New York where she worked as a business manager for a dental practice.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Bowes.

She is survived by her dear friends, Minnie and Kay Thurman, Paul Tallent, of Graysville, and Lois Abel of Dayton.

Graveside services were conducted 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, 1999, in Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Chattanooga. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Ruth Russell
Died: 02/13/1999

Mary Ruth Russell, of Las Cruces, N.M., died there Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at her home. A former resident of Dayton, she was 75.

Survivors include her husband, William A. Russell of Las Cruces, N.M.; two sons, William C. Russell of Everett, Wash., and Michael Russell of Yakima, Wash.; two sisters, Dortha J. Nelson of Zephyr Hills, Fla., and Lillie Mae McDowell of Evensville; brother, Melvin Harrison of Hixson, Tenn.; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday in Las Cruces, N.M. Announcement courtesy of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton.

Morgan H. Barger
Died: 02/13/1999

Morgan H. Barger, of Ozone, Tenn., died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, at Cumberland Medical Center of Crossville. He was 82.

He was a 1934 graduate of Rhea Central High School and retired from X-10 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. in 1972. He was a member of the Rockwood Golf and Country Club and was an avid gardener.

Survivors include his wife, Uila Barger of Ozone, Tenn.; son and daughter-in-law, Stanley D. and Frances Barger of Cookeville, Tenn.; daughters and sons-in-law, Sue Barger and Ron Colquitt of Anniston, Ala., and Andrea Barger McMaster of Pelham, Ala.; grandchildren and spouses, Alan and Tracy Brill of Birmingham, Ala., Michael and Joy Brill of Pelham, Ala., Charles and Donna Barger of Kingsland, Ga., Steven and Crista Chappell of Columbia, Mo., Casey Barger of Auburn, Ala., Andy Colquitt of Auburn, Ala., and Clint Colquitt of Anniston, Ala.; brother, James Barger of Cookeville, Tenn.; sisters, Nola Young and Mary Swafford, both of Graysville; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Kyker Funeral Home in Rockwood with Robert Clayton officiating. Graveside services and interment will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, at Pleasant View Cemetery in Graysville. Kyker Funeral Home in Rockwood, Tenn., was in charge of arrangements.

Lula Cook
Died: 02/18/1999

Lula Cook, of Dayton, died at her home Thursday, Feb. 18, 1999. She was 89.

Born April 20, 1909, in Monroe County, Tenn., she was the daughter of Martha Catherine (White) and John Alexander Lowry. She lived in Dayton since 1959 as a homemaker and attended Chilhowee Baptist in Blount County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Ross Cook Sr.

Survivors include sons and daughters, Thomas Ross Cook Jr. of Vienna, Va., Eula Nichols of Maryville, Tenn., James Carson Cook of Houston, Texas, Mary Rose Moore of Rising Fawn, Ga., Joyce Sweis of Sacramento, California, Nolla McHone of Decatur, Tenn., Quincetta Bookout of Maryville, Tenn., Jewell Frazier of Knoxville and Gena Robin Smith of Spring City; also surviving are 25 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, 1999, in the chapel of Vanderwall Funeral Home with Rev. Alan Winkler officiating. Interment followed the services in Ogden Cemetery on Dayton Mountain. Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton was in charge of arrangements.

Charles Roger Newby
Died: 02/19/1999

Charles Roger Newby, of Spring City, died Friday, Feb. 19, 1999, at Rhea Medical Center in Dayton. He was 56.

A lifelong resident of Spring City, he was a retired truck driver with the Tennessee Valley Authority at Watts Bar. He was a member of Teamsters Local #515 and of Spring City Central Baptist Church. He was a Vietnam veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert C. Newby Sr.

Survivors include his mother, Ophia Monday Moore of Edgewater, Fla.; stepfather, Willard Moore of Edgewater, Fla.; two daughters, Donna K. Stewart of Spring City and Karen Newby of Monterey, Tenn.; son, Chuck Newby of Crossville, Tenn.; brother, Cliff Newby of Spring City; sister, Rhonda Lynn Walker of Edgewater, Fla.; two grandchildren, Amber Whittaker of Monterey, Tenn., and Brandon C. Stewart of Spring City; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, with Rev. Jerry Levengood officiating. Interment followed the service in Thurman Cemetery. Vaughn Funeral Home in Spring City was in charge of arrangements.

Velma Garrett Newby
Died: 03/07/1999

Velma (Garrett) Newby, of Bonner Springs, Kan., died Sunday, March 7, 1999. She was 69.

Mrs. Newby was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred E. Newby, in 1982. Survivors include two sons, Bobby Newby of Bonner Springs, Kan., and Danny Newby of Dayton; daughter, Carolyn M. Manson of Kannapolis, N.C.; three sisters, Cindy Brehm of Akron, Ohio, Jewel Stiner of South Carolina, and Ethel McCullaugh of Sharon, Ohio; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 12, 1999, in the chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Parker and Reverend Harold Newby officiating. Burial will follow the services in Smyrna Cemetery. Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home in Dayton is in charge of the arrangements.

Ronald H. Shipley
Died: 02/22/1999

Ronald H. Shipley, of Soddy-Daisy, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, in a local health care center. He was 40.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Juanita Smith. Survivors include his daughter, Heather Shipley of Dayton; parents, Donald Shipley of Soddy-Daisy; step-mother, Lola Shipley of Soddy-Daisy; sisters, Anita White of Dayton and Annette Goins of Dayton; and brother, Steve Smith of Dayton.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, in the chapel of Williamson and Sons Funeral Home in Soddy-Daisy with Rev. Ed Young and Rev. Michael Poe officiating. Burial will follow the services in Shipley Cemetery. Williamson and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
