SARTAIN, MR. L. D., of Pelham, (1928 – 2015), TN died December 18, 2015 at Harton Hospital in Tullahoma, Tennessee. L. D. was the oldest son of Herbert and Maymie Hawk Sartain. He was born February 11, 1929 in Pelham, TN. L. D. was raised in Pelham and graduated from Grundy County High School in 1946. L. D. attended Tennessee Tech in Cookeville and served in the United Sates Air Force during Korean War. L. D. was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Maymie Hawk Sartain, infant sister, brother, Jim Sartain and special son Harold Winton. Survived by his wife of 58 years Reba Jo Bennett Sartain; daughters, Janette Elaine Sartain, Mary Kate Sartain, Carolyn Dee Sartain and Mary Jane Winton of Pelham; sons, James Daniel (Henrietta) Sartain of Decherd, Michael Andrew Sartain of Pelham and Billy Mack (Donna) Sartain of Piqua, Ohio; one niece Millicent Kay (Eddie) Baker of Pelham; grandchildren James Wesley (Courtney) Sartain of Pelham, Heather Nicole Sartain of Decherd and David Alan Winton of Pelham. Funeral services were held Monday in the funeral home chapel with Brother Ray Winton officiating. Burial followed in Warren Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, TN.

RIEDER, MR. WILLIAM JONAS, of the Valley Home Community in Grundy County died on December 17, 2015 following a massive heart attack. Mr. Rieder, (1928 – 2015), age 87, was born on August 6, 1928. He was the son of William Jonas Rieder, Sr. and Verna Rhea Floyd Rieder of the Valley Home Community. On December 12, 1949, Mr. Rieder married his wife of sixty-six years, Irma Jean Gipson of Valley Home. Mr. and Mrs. Rieder lived in Valley Home for 65 years. Mr. Rieder worked at AEDC from the time of its construction until his retirement in 1988. Mr. Rieder began his employment at AEDC with Rust Engineering during the construction phase. He continued his service at AEDC with Aro, Inc, Pan Am, and SSI. He was an outside machinist supervisor with SSI when he retired. In addition to his work at AEDC, Mr. Rieder was a farmer in Valley Home where he raised beef cattle for over fifty years and enjoyed gardening, fishing, reading, and working with wood and metal. Mr. Rieder is survived by sons, William Clay (Kathy) Rieder of Tullahoma, and Timothy Dale Rieder of Valley Home; three grandchildren, William Jackson (Cassie) Rieder of Chattanooga, Katherine (Rob) Marsh of Shelbyville, and Kelley N. Rieder of Valley Home; great-grandchildren, Walker Clay Marsh (3), Madeline Payne Marsh (2), Sadie S Rieder (6 months), and Anna Patterson Marsh (11 days) ; and brother, Donald D. (Robles) Rieder of Carrolton, GA. Funeral Services were held on Sunday, December 20, 2015 at Pelham United Methodist Church with Rev. Francis D. Hennessy officiating. Interment followed at Warren cemetery with William J. Rieder, Robert P. Marsh, Ben C. Hale, Key Klungland, Kenneth R. Mayes, Robin Smith, Sam Myers, and Larwence Smith serving as pallbearers. Arrangements were provided by Moore-Cortner Funeral Home, Winchester, TN.

ADKINS, MISS KALA, (1990 – 2015), age 25, of Sale Creek, Tennessee, went home to be with Jesus Thursday, December 17, 2015 at her home surrounded by those who loved her dearly. She was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on February 15, 1990. She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth W. Akins; grandfather, J. L. Akins.
Kala was a student and attended for over 20 years at the Orange Grove Center. She enjoyed going to school, listening to gospel music, loved her pillows and watching Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers. She loved every moment she spent with her nieces Attie and Briella. Kala's strength and courage has been such an inspiration and her love for Jesus will live in our hearts forever. She is survived by her loving mother, Tabitha J. Irvin Johnson; grandparents, Pastor Russell and Brenda Irvin, Charlotte Akins; brother, Kyle Harris and family (Brittany, Attie and Briella) ; uncles, Ronald Akins and Jason Irvin and family (April, Gabe and Riley) ; special friend and caregiver, Luella Cash; A special "Thank You" to Hospice of Chattanooga for their loving care.
Funeral services were held Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Ministers, Jeremy Robinson, Nathan Eustice and Richard Long officiating. Burial followed in the Coalmont Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Orange Grove Center. Arrangements were provided by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN

DAVIS, MR. NORMAN EUGENE, age 80, (1935 – 2015), of Pikeville, TN passed away at his home on December 16, 2015, surrounded by his family. He was a United States Army veteran, serving as a Sergeant in the Korean War. Upon leaving the military, he spent his remaining lifetime working as a lineman, where he retired as a foreman for SVEC. After retirement he enjoyed years of woodworking. He was preceded in death by his parents, Matt Scott and Georgia Mae Payne Davis; brothers, Mack, Robert, Homer, L. V. and J. C. Davis; sisters, Velma Daggett, Marie Russell and Ola Mae Davis. Survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years, Frances Carol Bickford Davis; daughter, Sharon (Danny) Layne of Tracy City, TN; son, Gene (Susan) Davis of Lilburn, GA; and daughter, Teresa (Bryan) McMillen of Pikeville, TN; grandchildren, Nikki Layne, Megan (Lindsey) Smith, Eric (Erica) Davis, Brandi (Charles) Burge, Kim Davis, Kendra McMillen, Colton McMillen and Katie McMillen; great-grandchildren, Javan, Dallas and Journey Winton, Derek, Autumn, Evyn and Wyatt Burge, and Austin Elliott, Trinity Reel, Cole Debord, Fallon Lafferty and Lyla McMillen; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Friday in the funeral home chapel. Burial followed in Cagle Cemetery. Donations can be made to Hospice of Chattanooga in memory of Norman Davis. Arrangements were provided by Putnam-Reed Funeral Home, Pikeville, TN.

Mrs. Betty Sue Burnett, (1938 – 2015) age 77, of Gruetli-Laager, passed away Wednesday, December 16, 2015. She attended Mt Etta Freewill Baptist Church. She was born August 14, 1938 to Hollis and Ida Tate Meeks who preceded her in death along with her husband, James Burnett, brother, Durand Meeks; sister, Vera Wanda Braden. She is survived by her son, Jeff (Teresa) Burnett; daughters, Vickie (Dan) Layne, Karen (Jim) Layne and LaDonna (Eric) Green; brother, Tate (Joyce) Meeks; grandchildren, Hollie (Justin), Dale, Anthony, Shane, Justin (Audrey), Jake (Donna Jo), Erica (Jake), Whitney (Stephen) and Emily (Zachary) ; great-grandchildren, Dakota, Kyndrianna, Matthew, Kendra, Kaidon and Lincoln (due February) ; several nieces, nephews and friends. She was loved and will be missed by all of us. Funeral services were held Friday in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Greg Burnett, Bro. Lloyd Crisp and Bro. Boyd Brown officiating. Burial followed in the Fall Creek Cemetery. Arrangements were provided Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN

KNIGHT, MR. RONALD COLBY, (1970 – 2015), age 45, of Gruetli-Laager, TN passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2015 from a sudden illness. He was born January 01, 1970. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Travis Knight. He is survived by his parents, Charles Ronnie and Rosalyn Cannon Knight; daughters, Autumn Knight, Sumer Knight, Cassidy Cleek, Shiloh Northcutt and Jordan Bradford (Kurt) Brewer; brother, Dearick (Dana) Knight; nephews Chandler and Gavin. Funeral services were held Thursday in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Eddie Birdwell officiating. Burial followed in the Fall Creek Cemetery. Arrangements were provided by Layne Funeral Home, Palmer, TN.

COLLINGS, MR. JOSHUA DAVID, (1995 – 2015), age 20, of Tracy City, passed this life on Tuesday, December 15th, 2015 at Heritage Medical Center in Shelbyville. Josh was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Daniel and Stephanie Rowland Collings and was currently a student at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Maurica Rowland. In addition to his parents, Josh is survived by his sister, Victoria Collings of Tracy City; paternal grandparents, David and Debbie Collings of Nashville; his maternal grandfather, Lawrence Rowland of Signal Mountain; and his significant other, Audrey Hill of Pelham. A Celebration of Life Service was held on Saturday, December 19th, 2015 at 3:00pm at the Simply Southern Restaurant, 1749 US-41, Pelham, Tennessee 37366. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, Josh's family suggests that donations be made to the Tennessee College of Applied Technology, 100 White Bridge Road, Nashville, Tennessee 37209. Arrangements were provided by Kilgore Funeral Home, Tullahoma, TN.

THOMAS, MR. DAVID WILLIAM, On December 14, 2015, (1929 – 2015), passed peacefully from this world. He was surrounded by his loving family. David was known as a master craftsman, builder and carpenter. During his career, he and his brother Robert owned a construction company and built many homes in the area. Several have been featured in architecture design publications. David was born April 26, 1929 in Monteagle, Tennessee to Charles and Nettie Thomas who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Thomas; children and stepchildren, Jerry Don (Jenny) Thomas, Jeff (Charlotte) Thomas, Jackie Rhodes and Jay Tucker all of Monteagle and Charles (Rita) Thomas of Piedmont, Alabama. He is also survived by a brother, Charlton (June) Thomas of Monteagle and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Robert Thomas; sister, Charlene Lowrie and granddaughter, Lauren Thomas. A memorial service was held Saturday with Claude Hoback and Freddie Harris officiating. In Lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Lauren Thomas Scholarship Fund, Saint Andrews – Sewanee School, 290 Quintard Rd, Sewanee, TN 37375 or Harrison Chapel Methodist Church, P. O. Box 203, Sewanee, TN 37375. Arrangements were provided by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, TN.

HAWK, MRS. RUBY R., (1913 – 2015), age 102, of Pelham, TN, passed away Sunday, December 13th, morning at McArthur Manor in Manchester. Mrs. Hawk was born in Grundy County, the daughter of the late John Henry and Lillie Moran Rieder. She was a seamstress at various factories and cooked at Pelham School and was of the Church of Christ faith. She loved to read, sewing, quilting, and needlework. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hawk was also preceded in death by her husband, Dillon Hawk; and two sisters, Anna Ruth Gilliam and Henrietta Curtis. She is survived by one daughter, Verna Ruth (J. L.) Winton of Pelham; two grandchildren, Teresa (Tim) Cunningham of Grundy County and Gaye (John) Kelley of Estill Springs; four great grandchildren, Courtney (Jonathan) Pragel, John Cunningham, Blake (Teela) Kelley, and Drew Kelley; and one great, great grandchild, Camden Reese Pragel. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Manchester Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Charles Williams officiating. Burial followed in Warren cemetery in Pelham. Arrangements were provided by Manchester Funeral Home, Manchester, TN.

HAYSE, MR. VERON “GABBY”, husband of the late Tericia A. Hayse, (1931 – 2015), age 84, died Sunday, December 13 at Alvin C. York Veterans Hospital in Murfreesboro, TN. Gabby was born in Palmer Tennessee, the only son of Willie and Mabell Hayse. Gabby is survived by his five children: daughters, Kathryn (Harold) Dykes, Vickie (ED) Hudgins, Shellie (Bill-SO) Dykes and sons, Vernon "Don" Hayse Jr. and John (Edit) Hayse. Gabby and Ann are survived by 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Gabby is a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, where he earned several medals including the Purple Heart and a Civil Action Unit Citation. Gabby was wounded in Kumhwa Valley, Korea on August 22, 1952 and received the Purple Heart as well as other commendations for his dedication and bravery. The discipline and patriotism he learned as an Army Medic never left him, as friends and family will attest. Services were held Friday at Foster and Lay Funeral Home and he was interred in a family plot at Orange Hill cemetery in Tracy City, Tennessee. Arrangements were provided by Foster & Lay Funeral Home, Tracy City, TN.

CUNNINGHAM, MRS. MINNIE M., (June 26, 1938 - December 12, 2015) age 77 of Tracy City passed away at her home Saturday afternoon, December 12, 2015. She was a daughter of the late Thomas Murray and Maude Thorpe Murray and was preceded in death by her daughters, Rhonda Gail, Sandra Cecila and Djuana Lynn Cunningham; sisters, Martha Hughes, Clara Anderson and Ann Murray; brothers, Charles, George, Bill, Walter, James, Lewis and Arthur Murray. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Cecil Cunningham; daughters, Debbie (Thomas) Measles of McMinnville and Erica Miller of Tracy City; sister, Virginia Argo of Monteagle; step-children, Patricia (Jack) Reynolds of Miami, FL and Roger Cunningham of Woodbury, TN; grandchildren, Robbie, Levi and Cecilee Miller all of Tracy City, Amber (Richey) Woodlee of McMinnville, Renea (Damon) Woodlee of McMinnville; 7 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Brother Dennis Rollins and Brother Ralph Shrum officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening 5-9 P.M. at the funeral home. Arrangements are by Cumberland Funeral Home, 207 Mabee Avenue, Monteagle.

SUMMERS, MRS. LEOTA CHARLLYN, 77, passed away Friday, December 11, 2015. She was of the Baptist Faith. She was born June 22, 1938 to Robert and Gladys Barnett Summers who preceded her in death along with her brother, Robert Thomas, Jr. ; sister, Betty Groff, Jo Hardy and Margaret Crabtree.
She is survived by her daughters, Sandre (Lee) McFarland and Sherry (Johnny Ray) Fults; brothers, Jack, Tony, Lewis and James Summers; sister, Faye Smith; grandchildren, Shane (Ashley), Shawn (Bette), Dustin (Andrea) and Lacey; great-grandchildren, Eli, Luke, Abby, Cooper, Drew and McCoy. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Bro. Freddie Savage and Bro. Danny Coffelt officiating with burial to follow in the Palmer Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM at Layne Funeral Home, Inc. Palmer, Tennessee.
