Johnny Waylon Garton
ODESSA — Johnny Waylon Garton, 22, of Odessa passed away Friday, Oct. 11, 2002, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 2, 1980, in Odessa. He was a 1999 graduate of Permian High School. He had worked for Abbott Supply Co. for 1 1/2 years. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Garton of Odessa; sons, Cody Hickman and Zachary Garton, both of Odessa; father Michael Garton of Odessa, mother, Evelyn Garton of Odessa; grandparents, Martha and Wayne Clark of Tucumcari, N.M., and James and Pat Lawson of El Paso; great-grandmother, Stella Creech of Tucumcari; sister, Amy Garton of Odessa; best friend, Michael Giroir; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Oct. 15, 2002, at Temple Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
He will be greatly missed by his Aunt Gladys and Uncle Louis and all who loved him.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Dolly Gibbs
IRAAN — Dolly Gibbs, 65 of Iraan, died on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at her home in Iraan.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 15, 2002, at the First Baptist Church in Iraan with the Rev. Mike Wright officiating. Burial will follow at the Restland cemetery with services under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
Mrs. Gibbs was born on July 29, 1937, in Buena Vista, Texas. She had been a resident of Iraan since 1956. She married Tommy Gibbs on Nov. 27, 1957, in Ojinaga, Mexico. She was the owner/operator of Smokey Automotive until her retirement in April of 1998. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Tommy Gibbs of Iraan; four children, Della Miller of Robert Lee, Glennia Lipscomb of Round Rock, Doyle Light of Grape Creek and Jimmy Light of Miami, Texas; two brothers, Smokey Williams and Carl Williams both of Iraan; four sisters, Dorothy Fuller of Garland, Texas, Lois Hicks of Brownwood and Henrietta Elder and Jo West both of Odessa; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mary Nell Hogue Pruett
STANTON — Mary Nell Hogue Pruett, 57, of Odessa, died on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, in Hospice House of Odessa. Graveside funeral services wll be at 2:00 p.m. today, Oct. 15, 2002, at Evergreen cemetery in Stanton with the Rev. Paul Thompson of First Assembly of God in Odessa officiating.
She was born on Aug. 16, 1945, in Big Spring, Texas.
Mary Nell was Pentecostal.
She lived in Odessa most of her life and had worked as a reflexologist. She loved to raise roses, drink Dr. Peppers and, most of all, she loved her family.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Kevin B. and P.J. Woodall of Hurst; one daughter, Sherri Kennedy of Odessa; four grandchildren, Perry Wayne Johnson, Carrie Kennedy and Corey Kennedy, all of Odessa, and Hunter Ross Woodall of Hurst; three sisters, Elsie Chavez of Goldsmith, Lurlene Gregg of Andrews and Maydell Kimbrough of Olney; one brother, Wayne Hogue of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be grandson, Perry Wayne Johnson; nephews, Kenneth Robinson, Franklin Robinson and Rickie Croxton; and great-nephews, Justin Collins and Aaron Collins.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to Hospice House of Odessa, 903 N. Sam Houston, Odessa, Texas 79761.
Arrangements under the direction of Gilbreath Funeral Home.

Clifton (Cliff) M. Deas
ODESSA — Clifton (Cliff) M. Deas has passed from this earthly life and taken hold of eternal life to which he was called. He passed away on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at Hospice House in Odessa, Texas. He was 78 years old. He had lived life with love, passion and generosity for others in a way that was a testimony to the faith by which he lived. He was a Baptist.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with the Rev. William R. Chapman officiating. Graveside services will follow at the Ector County cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Rodgers, Coby Uhlhorn, Larry Morrison, James Uhlhorn, Richard Mainka and Kirk Dickman. Honorary pallbearers are Grady Stringer and Billy Everett.
Cliff was born on June 27, 1924, in Ellisville, Miss., to Dumas Cecil Deas and Dillon Butler Deas. He served in the U.S. Navy, and he was a World War II veteran. He married Norma Mae Morrison on June 22, 1950. They moved to Odessa in 1954 where they raised their daughter, Lisa Deas Uhlhorn. The Lord blessed them with 52 years of marriage before he called Cliff home. He was a retired employee of the City of Odessa.
Cliff was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His love for his family was without measure and he was greatly loved and adored by them in return. He was a man who knew Jesus Christ and loved God. He never lost faith even while he endured many trials and a long illness. He liked to laugh and his sense of humor kept him and those around him going even while he was sick. God blessed him with wisdom, honor and a mighty sense of duty for serving others.
His survivors include his wife, Norma Deas; his daughter, Lisa Deas Uhlhorn and her husband Billy Uhlhorn of Odessa; his grandchildren, Coby Uhlhorn and wife Heather Uhlhorn and one great-granddaughter, Ashley Leigh Uhlhorn, all of Odessa; his son Glen Deas and wife Ann of West Monroe, La.; and his brother, Wayne Deas and wife Darlene of Huffman, Texas. Other survivors include many nieces, nephews and other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister and a son.
Cliff and his family claim the promise of God given in II Timothy 4:7-8: “I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at the day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”
You were loved and adored by your family. You were a precious man and we will miss you greatly. Our sorrow is that you are no longer here with us, but we rejoice that you have found the day where there is no more suffering and no more tears. Go rest in peace.

Robert Pufal
ODESSA — Robert Pufal went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 12, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.
He was born Sept. 13, 1927, to Edwin and Louisa Pufal in El Paso, Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Upon receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from New Mexico State University, Robert moved to Odessa in 1953 to begin his career as a teacher/coach and later as an administrator. During his 33 years with ECISD he was best known as “Coach Pufal, ” coaching from 1953 until 1969. He worked with special children while completing his master’s degree in education. In 1986, he retired as Assistant Principal at Crockett Junior High School. Many of his former students remarked that he made a profound difference in their lives not only as an educator but also as a mentor.
Robert is survived by his wife, Beverly; and their three children, Robert Pufal and wife Donna of San Antonio, Robin Been and husband Terry of Brookesmith and Randy Pufal and wife Denise of Houston. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Mathew Pufal and wife Julie, Megan Pufal, John Pufal, Lacey Been, Kristi Been, Amber Pufal, Colton Pufal; and one great-grandchild, Mary Paige Pufal.
Graveside services will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 15, 2002, with the Rev. Jimmy Dale Davis officiating under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Gladys Vanley
ODESSA — Gladys Vanley, 86, of Fort Worth died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at her residence.
She was born March 27, 1916, in Delaware, Ok. She was a homemaker and a member of the Assembly of God Church. She lived in Odessa from 1945 to 1994, when she moved to Northeast Texas.
Survivors include: Sons, James Vanley and his wife Joy of Rowlette, Alfred “Ace” Vanley and his wife Nancy of Odessa and Jack L. Vanley and his wife Letica of El Paso; daughter, Lynda J. Armstrong of Arlington; sisters, Edna Waller of Phoenix, Ariz., and Juanita Simmons of Hobbs, N.M.; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Gladys was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kathy Vanley.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with the Rev. Larry Elder officiating. Interment will follow at Ector County cemetery.
Services have been entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Harold Wayne Burchett
ODESSA — Harold Wayne Burchett, 86, of Odessa, passed away Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at his residence. He was born on Nov. 24, 1915, in Des Moines, Iowa. He married Pat Sanders on Nov. 20, 1981, in Odessa.
Harold was a longtime resident of Odessa. He was a salesman for Sears Roebuck and Co. for many years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Harold was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord, where he was employed after his retirement and was one of the “Holy Rollers.” Harold enjoyed helping people, especially those in need. He never met a stranger. Harold was a true gentleman. Harold’s life passion was caring for others. He will be truly missed.
His parents; two brothers; and a sister preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Pat Burchett of Odessa; sons, Robert Burchett and wife Sue of Shenandoah, Iowa, and William Burchett and wife Pam of Bastrop, Texas; daughters, Jeri Bravenec of San Jose, Calif., and Dixie Estrada and husband J.R. of Escondido, Calif.; stepson, Robert Sanders and wife Leesa of Kingwood, Texas; stepdaughters, Nancy Cooper and husband Preasley of Brady, Texas, Debbie Fowler and husband Mike of Odessa, Texas, and Laura Edgerton and husband Billy of Kenedy, Texas; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and nephew Dave Burchett and wife Julie of St. Louis, Mo.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 30, 2002, at the Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord with the Rev. James Otterness officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord or the charity of choice. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Lillie Pearl Miller
ODESSA — Graveside services for Mrs. Lillie Pearl Miller, 84, of Monroe, La., formerly of Odessa, Texas, will be at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 30, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Rev. Green officiating. Services under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Mrs. Miller died Oct. 26, 2002, at the St. Joseph’s Assisted Living Center in Monroe.
Mrs. Miller was a homemaker, loving mother and grandmother. Her husband, James W. Miller; daughter, Barbara June Elliott; and grandsons, Calvin Earl Stubbs Jr. and James Dwight Miller, preceded Mrs. Miller in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Jo Stubbs of Calhoun, La.; son, James Ronnie Miller of Odessa, Texas; son-in-law, Don Elliott of Tucson, Ariz.; brother, L.C. Whatley of Midland, Texas; sisters, Beth Glass of Vaga, Texas and Dorothy Felts of Dumas, Texas; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until noon today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Fernando S. Olivas Jr.
ODESSA — Fernando S. Olivas Jr., 25, died Sunday at Medical Center Hospital.
Fernando was born Oct. 4, 1977 in Odessa, Texas, to Fernando M. Olivas and the late Janie Sustaita. He was Catholic.
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with Father Frank Chavez officiating. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery. Services under the direction of Martinez Funeral Home.
Survivors include his father, Fernando M. Olivas of Odessa; stepmother, Bonnie Olivas of Odessa; and brothers, Duvan Rodriguez and Clyde Rodriguez, both of Houston, and Christopher Olivas of Odessa.

James Nathan Patterson
MIDLAND — Infant baby James Nathan Patterson, of Midland, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2002, at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland with Dr. Gary Dyer of the First Baptist Church of Midland officiating.
He was born Oct. 26, 2002, in Midland, Texas.
Survivors include: his parents, Lance and Stephanie Patterson of Midland; one brother, Brenden William Patterson of Midland; maternal grandmother, Glenda Reince of Midland; maternal grandparents, Mike and Carol Reince of Bedford; paternal grandparents, Jim and Sherry Patterson of Houston; paternal great-grandmother, Helen Eaglebarger of Houston; maternal great-grandfather, James Reince of Green Bay, Wis.; uncle, Chris Reince of Euless; aunt and uncle, Mignon and Andrew Cannon of Houston; and great-aunt and uncle, Gene and Sandy McGraw of Houston.
“Even the youths shall grow tired and weary, and the young men shall stumble and fall: But those who hope in the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not grow weary; and they shall walk, and not be faint.” Isaiah 40: 30 & 31.

Gary Neil Sloan
MIDLAND — Gary lost his battle with cancer after a 13 1/2-year courageous fight, Monday, Oct. 28, 2002.
Gary was born May 10, 1952, in Abilene, Texas, to Clarence and Jerry Sloan. The family moved to Midland in June of 1952. Gary graduated from Lee High School in 1970 and attended Texas Tech and Stephen F. Austin. In 1972, he joined the family business, Sloan-Bagwell Furniture, and worked there unitl 1980. He also worked with Mid West Equipment for 17 years and continued to work in oilfield sales until 1999. Gary was an avid fan of auto racing, as well as a fisherman and gourmet cook. On April 1, 1989, he married Dolores Wall in Midland. He was a member of First Christian Church.
Gary is survived by his wife, Dolores Sloan of Odessa, Texas; stepdaughter, Gerri Cates and her husband Glennon of Alamogordo, N.M.; parents, Clarence and Jerry Sloan of Midland, Texas; sister, Debbie Pettie and her husband Ron of Dallas, Texas; nephew, Paul Pettie of Dallas; niece, Paige Pettie of Dallas; and grandson, Brennon Cates of Alamogordo.
Visitation will be held at Ellis Funeral Home on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at First Christian Church with Dr. Tommy Potter officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.

Ena Morris
ODESSA — Ena Morris, 94, of Odessa, a homemaker, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at Deerings Nursing Home.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Mike Bartlett officiating. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
She was born in Burlingame, Kan. She was a longtime resident of Odessa.
SURVIVORS: Son, George Morris of Odessa; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
