Judy Cavender “Grannie”
ODESSA — “Grannie” Judy Keefer came into this world July 26, 1944, in Big Spring. She graduated from Monahans High School in 1962 and married Jim Bob “J.B.” Cavender July 29, 1962.
During their marriage of forty plus years, Jim Bob “J.B.” and “Grannie” Judy opened their hearts and home to over fifty foster children from 1969 until 1996 and received the red plate award in 1989 for their dedication to the community in Ector County. “Grannie” Judy also maintained a licensed daycare called Mama Bears for several years. They unofficially adopted two multi-handicapped girls, Shellee Bruton and Maribell Sanchez.
“Grannie” Judy left this world Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by Shellee Bruton Cavender, her daughter. She is survived by her loving husband, Jim Bob “J.B.” Cavender of Odessa; sons, Bill Cavender and wife Dianne of Odessa, James Cavender and wife Nancy of Midland, and Shawn Cavender and wife Angie of Glendale, Ariz.; daughter Maribell Sanchez of Odessa; brother, Robert “Don” Keefer; and sisters, Carol Arnold and Sue Prichard.
“Grannie” Judy was very proud of her twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and one great-niece.
A memorial service conducted by Lynn Money was held at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at the Sixth and Jackson Church of Christ Auditorium.
“Grannie” Judy Cavender unconditionally opened her heart to everyone and considered everyone a part of her family. She will be greatly missed.
Services entrusted to Memorial Services/Chapa Funeral Home.

Irene Catherine Hill
ALBANY — Irene Catherine Hill, 82, of Norman, Okla., formerly of Albany, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Albany. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Trinity with the Rev. Art Hill and the Rev. Donald Loeschen officiating. Burial will be at Albany cemetery. Arrangements by Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman, Okla.
Mrs. Hill was born July 12, 1920, in Albany to Arthur and Esther Handrick. She graduated from Albany High School in 1938. Irene married Lonnie Leo Hill Dec. 9, 1939. He preceded her in death in 1987.
Irene and Leo resided in Odessa from 1959 to 1981, where they retired to Albany. While living in Odessa, Mrs. Hill was employed by Mrs. Baird’s Bakeries from 1964 through 1978. They were members of Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Survivors include sons, Lonnie Hill Jr. and wife Fran of Odessa and Rev. Art Hill and wife Kim of Tyler; daughters, Karen Hill and husband Jim of Norman, Okla., and Sharon Poole and husband Mike of Balch Springs; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mildred Morgan of Abilene, and a granddaughter, Theresa Hill-Witt of Odessa.
The family requests that memorials be made to Trinity Lutheran Church of Albany.

Russell Woodruff
ARLINGTON — Russell Woodruff, 88, of Arlington died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Kindred Hospital in Arlington. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Laurel Land Memorial Park with Dr. H. Bailey Stone officiating.
He was born Sept. 17, 1914, in Tecumseh, Okla., to Mose and Edna Pearl Woodruff. He married Ornez Hammon August 17, 1937 in Oklahoma. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past August. They moved from Arizona to Odessa in 1981 and were members of the First Baptist Church. In 1999 they moved to Burleson and then to Eden Terrace Independent Living, in Arlington February 2001. He was preceded in death by his brother Oscar of Ninnekah, Okla.
He is survived by his wife Ornez; brothers, Ray of Maysville, Okla., Kenneth of St. Louis, Mo., and Boe of Woodard, Okla.; sister, Bernice Woodruff Reynolds of Lindsey, Okla., and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Avalyn Pogue Whitmire
ODESSA — Avalyn Pogue Whitmire, 88, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at a care facility in San Antonio, Texas.
Mrs. Whitmire was born in Commerce, Texas, on Jan. 10, 1914, to the late Joseph A. and Lillis Leona Elliott Pogue. She moved to Midland in 1927 and remained in West Texas either in life or spirit until her death. Of her initial trip to Midland from Oklahoma, she wrote about the three-day trip in a “Ford touring car with isinglass curtains.”
She graduated from Midland High in 1931 and completed registered nurses’ training at Parkland Hospital, Dallas, in 1936. She lived in Ector County for 59 years where she started the ECISD school nursing program in 1947 and remained the head school nurse until her retirement in 1974. During those years, she touched the lives of many children in the Ector County public schools.
She loved the summers she spent as camp nurse at Camp La Junta for Boys and Heart O’ the Hills Camp for Girls on the Guadalupe River near Hunt, Texas.
In retirement she was active in the Modern Gardeners Garden Club and Ector County Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed working in her yard, and won numerous horticulture prizes at the Permian Basin Fair.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Harwell C. Whitmire; a son, John P. Whitmire; her parents; and two brothers, J.C. Pogue and Bill Pogue.
Survivors include a son, Jack Whitmire and wife Nelda of Victoria, Texas; daughters, Betty Sumner and husband Bill of Midland and Mary Fish and husband Steve of Tempe, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is scheduled at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church of Odessa with the Rev. Steve Trout, senior pastor, officiating.
Services are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home of Midland.
The family suggests that memorials be directed to First United Methodist Church, 415 N. Lee Ave., Odessa, Texas, 79761 or to a charity of one’s choice.

Harry W. Clark
ODESSA — Harry W. Clark, 79, died Monday, Dec. 23 at his residence. He was born June 7, 1923 in Tulsa, Okla. to Glenn and Florence Clark. Harry married Mary Weaver on Aug. 29, 1947 in Monahans.
Harry proudly served during WWII in Gen. Patton’s Eighth Army Corp. He then went on to earn a BS degree in Engineering, which he put to use as a petroleum engineer and also a construction engineer.
Harry was a very avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. These activities became even more enjoyable to Harry when he was able to do them with his family.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Florence Clark and his son Robert Alan Clark.
He is survived by his wife Mary Clark of Odessa; sons Philip Clark and his wife Deborah of Odessa; brother Gene W. Clark of Capitan, N.M.; grandsons Christopher Clark and wife Stephanie of Fort Worth and Jeremy and Joshua Clark of Odessa.
Services will be Friday, Dec. 27 at 10 a.m. at the Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors Chapel with Dr. David Mindel officiating. Burial will follow at the Andrews North cemetery in Andrews.
Arrangements entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

Rodney Erwin Schwarzlose
SEGUIN — Rodney Erwin Schwarzlose passed away Dec. 24 in Seguin. Funeral mass will be held Friday, Dec. 27 at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church with Msgr. Gerald Hubertus officiating. Interment will follow at St. James cemetery. Visitation Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with rosary service at 7 p.m. at Goetz Funeral Home.
Mr. Schwarzlose was born Nov. 27, 1944 in New Braunfels, Texas to Erwin Eugene and Lucile Marie Scheler Schwarzlose. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and was a fourth degree Knights of Columbus. He was a scoutmaster, avid golfer and outdoorsman and a member of the Zorn and Laubach 9 Pin Bowling Clubs.
Rodney is survived by his wife of 31 years, Tashya Lynn Schwarzlose; sons, Rodney Adam Schwarzlose and wife Michelle, Phillip Shaun Schwarzlose and wife Cydney and Samuel John Schwarzlose; daughter, Rachel Dawn Schwarzlose; grandson, Zachary Adam Schwarzlose; granddaughters, Ava Brooke Schwarzlose and Anastasia Marie Castilleja; mother, Lucile Scheler Schwarzlose; sister, Joyce Marie Schwarzlose Magin and husband Melvin; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; Serving as pallbearers will be Richard Harborth, Rodney Galle, Daniel Wunderich, Mike Young, Terry Parisher, Steve Manning, the Honorable K.C. Lisenbe, Sam Hollman and Bob Covey. He is preceded in death by his father.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. James Catholic School.

Robert Lee Bagley
ODESSA — Robert (Bob) Lee Bagley, 73, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 24 at this residence after a battle with emphysema and lung cancer.
Robert was born Sept. 18, 1929 to Nathan Bagley and Belle Speed in Lorenzo, Texas. He moved to Odessa in 1945. Robert married Phyllis Hummel Feb. 19, 1950. He was active in, as well as a leader of, the Boy Scouts of America for many years. He enjoyed working with kids and loved to fish and camp. He was employed by M&M Sales for over 30 years.
Robert was a father figure to all who knew him. He was a man that lived by The Golden Rule, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Robert was a man who never had an unkind word to say to anyone and never said no to anyone. He lived his life for everyone around him, he never knew a stranger and will be deeply missed.
Robert was an active member of Temple Baptist Church.
Robert was preceded in death by a son, Charles W. Bagley, Sr., his mother Belle Speed and his father, Nathan Bagley.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Phyllis Bagley; a son Phillip Bagley; three brothers, Walter Bagley of Mineral Wells, Texas, Butch Bagley, Mineral Wells, Texas, and Charles Key of Sanford, Texas; sister, Betty Jo Hall of Heavner, Okla.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Temple Baptist Church with Reverend Jack Watkins and Reverend Walter McCall presiding.
Family visitation will be held Friday at Frank Wilson Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m.
Services are under direction of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Home.

Joseph Russell Mathers
ODESSA — Joseph Russell (J.R.) Mathers, 74, left his wife to join God on Dec. 24. He passed away at his residence after a brave and courageous battle with cancer. Joe was born Jan. 31, 1928, in Ponca City, Okla. to Tom and Bernice Mathers. After graduating from high school, Joe went to work on the Rock Island Railroad, before going into the U.S. Army in 1946. After he was discharged from the Army, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1948. While he was in the Naval Reserve he attended Texas Christian University. After graduating from TCU, he received his Texas State Teachers certificate in 1951. Joe went to work for Gulf Oil Corp. in 1952 and took an early retirement from Gulf/Chevron in 1986 after 34 years of service. Joe loved the outdoors and traveling, which took him many lovely places and supplied him with many memorable stories.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Bernice Mathers; a stepdaughter, Debbie Hefner and an adopted son, Rusty Myrick. He is survived by his wife, Glenda Mathers; daughter, Katherine Massa and husband Rick of Willows, Calif.; son, Robert Myrick and wife, April of Plano; granddaughter, Mikayla Massa; grandsons, Peyton Massa and Austin Myrick; sister Ruthanne Woodward and husband, Dick of San Carlos, Old Mexico; nieces Debbie Hazelwood of Keller, Texas, Dianne Latimer of Houston; stepchildren, Mike Bates and wife Joni and daughter Trisha of Odessa, Vicki Wells and sons Matt, Nick and Kurt of Dennison, Janice Wesley and husband Larry and son Barry of Amarillo, Bill Hefner, husband of Debbie Hefner; grandson, Jason Hefner and wife Sarita; great-granddaughters, Belinda and Brooke of Sweetwater and Jerod Hefner of Grapevine, Texas and Kelsee Hefner of Odessa.
Joe and Glenda had another getaway residence in Robert Lee, Texas where they had acquired many long time lovely friendships. Joe is also survived by many other loved ones and friends who will miss his witty and loving way.
Services are scheduled at Frank Wilson Chapel for 2 p.m. Friday with Chaplain Jimmy Braswell presiding. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Home Hospice or Hospice House in Joe’s memory.

Barbara Marrs
ODESSA — Barbara Marrs, 73, passed away on Dec. 24 at her Odessa residence. She was born Nov. 14, 1929 in Ryan, Okla. She was preceded in death by her first husband Dude Adkisson, the father of her five children and by her second husband Marvin Marrs; parents, brothers Luke, Leslie, Danny, Wayne and Darvin Long; sisters, Dorthy Turrentine, Mamie Lou Sanford; grandchild, Johnny Adkisson. She is survived by sons; Ronald Adkisson of Oklahoma, JR Adkisson of Texas; daughters, Deborah Hill of Odessa, Patricia Scrogum of Odessa, Dorothy Green of Midland; brother, Vick Long of Oklahoma; 17 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be on Thursday until 9 p.m. at Odessa Funeral Home. Graveside services have been set for Friday at 2 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Reverend Don Swindell officiating. Family will serve as pallbearers. Services by Odessa Funeral Home.

Hope Ann Hall
ODESSA — Hope Ann Hall was born Oct. 1, 1961, in San Francisco, Calif., to Jack and Barbara Rudd. She moved to Odessa in 1977 and lived here until she was called home Dec. 20, 2002.
Hope is survived by her loving husband of 13 years, David Hall; her children, Jeramiah and Eric Hall; her parents Jack and Barbara Rudd; and one grandmother, Gladys Rudd. She is also survived by her brother, Scott Rudd; her sisters, Vickie Sandefer and husband, Daryl, and Michelle Ragsdale and husband, Doug, all of Odessa; and brother Ronald Rudd and wife, Cathy, of Mt. Pleasant; not to mention numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Hope grew up a “Navy brat” until her father retired after serving 22 years in the military. She was a very happy and loving wife, mother and friend to everyone that she met. Hope loved to laugh and dance, and spend time with family and friends. Weekends meant barbecues, enjoying the outdoors and a competitive game of spades. She will be greatly missed by everyone that knew and loved her.
Memorial services celebrating Hope’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Chapel. Arrangements are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home.
