Ruth Strackbein

ODESSA — Ruth Strackbein, 94, a longtime resident of Odessa, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Parks Methodist Retirement Village.
She was born July 25, 1909, in Abilene. She was a retired arts & crafts instructor for the Odessa Boys Club. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Senior Citizens of Odessa, and she was a member of the Church of Christ. Her hobby was sculpturing and her works are masterpieces. She was a good wife and a loving mother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Dennis Strackbein; sisters, Elva Dearmon, Nicky Cockrell and Geraldine Thompson; and brothers, W.L. Baird and Archie Baird.
She is survived by her daughter, Vickie Davis and husband Rich Tessaro of Odessa; sons, Donald Strackbein and wife Glenda of Gonzales, Texas, Charles Strackbein and wife Ruth of Odessa and Ricky Strackbein of Danville, Va.; brother, Lennin Baird of Cisco; sisters, Alameda Horn of Florida and Odee Price of Seguin; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Tamplin officiating.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Juan Morales Valenzuela

ODESSA — Juan Morales Valenzuela, 59, of Odessa, passed away Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 24, 1944, in Alpine, Texas, to Juan and Angelina M. Valenzuela.
He was a Christian Catholic and worked as a glacier in the Glass Industry.
Mr. Valenzuela was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Viola Porras.
He is survived by his wife, Florella Valenzuela of Odessa; two sons, Steven Valenzuela and wife Sandra of Dallas and Jorge A. Zubiate of Odessa; three daughters, Laura Valenzuelao and Selena Valenzuela, both of Dallas, and Karla K. Flores and husband Robert of Odessa; three brothers, David Valenzuela and wife Isabel, Ruben Valenzuela and Jesse Valenzuela and wife Estella, all of Odessa; two sisters, Sylvia Jimenez of Odessa and Catalina Salas and husband Pete of Marathon; 10 grandchildren: and several nieces and nephews.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Uecker officiating. Burial will follow at Rosehill cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Fermin Ramirez, Jimmy Valenzuela, Jesse Valenzuela Jr., Juan Jiminez, Robert Salas and Danny Valenzuela.

Joe Glenn Wash

ODESSA — Joe Glenn Wash, 65, of Odessa, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at his residence.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with his son, Dr. Jay Wash, officiating. Services entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
Joe was born in Stamford, Texas, to Theresa White and Nathan Alford Wash. He served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was employed as a physical therapist for 20 years at Medical Center Hospital.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Kay Black Wash; his two sons, Jeff Wash and wife Laurie of Odessa and Jay Wash and wife Tina of Baytown; two brothers, Wayne Wash and wife Peggy of Lubbock and Michael Wash and wife Jana of Austin; one sister, Nancy Gardner and husband Johnny of Garland; five grandchildren, Tiffany, Brandon, Garrison, Laurlyn and Grantham.

Gustavo Chavarria Sr.

ODESSA — Gustavo Chavarria Sr., 73, our beloved husband and father, went home to be with our good Lord on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, after a lengthy illness.
He was born on July 29, 1930, in Mexico. He was a resident of Odessa for 23 years.
He and his loving wife of 53 years had 11 children, 32 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose Natividad and Maria Chavarria; his sister, Margarite Chavarria; and a son, Antonio Chavarria.
A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today and Monday Jan. 19, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
He is survived by his wife, Micaela Chavarria of Odessa; daughters, Yolanda Chavarria, Graciela Velasquez, Teresa Guzman and Maria Magnolia Nieto, all of Odessa; sons; Gustavo Chavarria Jr., Gerardo Chavarria, Armando Chavarria, Hugo Chavarria, Miguel Chavarria and Jose Natividad, all of Odessa; brother, Raul Chavarria of Durango, Mexico; sisters, Josefina Chavarria, Aurelia Chavarria, Rosa Chavarria and Luz Chavarria.
Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Wesley Morgan Hardin

ODESSA — Wesley Morgan Hardin, 53, of Odessa, died in a plane crash near Weatherford, Texas, on Jan. 15, 2004.
He was born Aug. 2, 1950, in Odessa, Texas. He was educated in the Ector County Independent School District and graduated from Permian High School in 1968. He earned a degree in pharmacy from the University of Texas and was the owner/pharmacist of University Pharmacy.
Wesley was a member of First Baptist Church, served on the Odessa College Foundation, the Odessa Country Club Board of Directors, was a past president of the West Texas Pharmacy Association and past president of the Flatlanders Ski Club.
Wesley enjoyed golf, snow skiing, travel, flying and hunting.
He was particularly proud of his two sons, Brandon, a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy, and Grayson, a senior at Odessa High School. The things he liked best included fast red cars, his four Labrador retrievers, beautiful spring flowers and the University of Texas football team.
He is survived by his wife, Holly Hampton Hardin; his sons, Brandon Chase Hardin and Grayson Noel Hardin; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan Hardin; his sister, Vicky Hardin; and his brother, Wilson Hardin.
Wesley’s memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Odessa, followed by visitation with the family at the church.
Funeral services are entrusted to Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.
The family suggests memorials be made to the First Baptist Church or the Odessa College Foundation.

The Rev. David Lynn Howard

ODESSA — The Rev. David Lynn Howard, age 55, passed away Friday, Jan. 16, 2004.
He was a beloved husband, son, father, brother, uncle and grandfather. He was born March 21, 1948, to Tom Edd and Nita M. Howard in Hobbs, N.M. He was the second of two children, attending school in Monahans and Wickett. In 1964, he and his family moved to Odessa. David graduated from Odessa High School in 1966. He attended Odessa College in the summer of 1972. He married Mary Lu Ellen Owens on July 30, 1972, and adopted her three sons, Jim Howard, Rick Howard and Stacy Howard. David started his career with Gulf Oil in 1974 and stayed with the company through buy-outs by Chevron and Dynergy until his death.
On Sept. 23, 2001, David was ordained at West Texas Odessa First Baptist Church. He was pastor of this same church. He was a loving man who sacrificed his time and money for all that knew him, spending all of his time on preparing sermons, visiting hospitals, nursing homes and home visits. He will be sadly missed and loved by all that knew him.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. today at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
David is survived by his wife, Lu Ellen of Odessa; his eldest son, Jim Howard of Mansfield, Texas, his middle son, Rick Black of Ruidoso, N.M., and his youngest son Stacy Howard of Odessa; and daughter, Lynette Lamarque of Fort Worth, Texas. He is also survived by his mother, Nita Howard of Odessa; his brother, Tommy Howard of Arlington, Texas; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Jim Howard, Rick Black, Stacy Howard, Greg Lamarque, Alexander Black and Zachary Black.
Services are entrusted to Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Vicenta Garcia Miranda

ODESSA — Vicenta Garcia Miranda, 68, of Odessa, who was born July 30, 1935, in Presidio, Texas, to Guadalupe and Maria Elena Garcia, passed away Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at her residence.
At the age of 6, after the death of her father, Vicenta moved to and lived in Fort Stockton until 1948, when she decided to move to Odessa where she met her loving partner in Christ, Juan Miranda.
Vicenta Garcia and Juan Miranda united in marriage on April 24, 1952, and to this unification was born 14 children.
She was a loving housewife, mother and an active and devoted Christian and Church member of The Way, The Truth and The Life.
Mrs. Miranda was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Joseph Miranda; one daughter, Fatima Lourdes Miranda; one grandson, Johnny Alexander Miranda; and two sisters, Lisa Armendariz and Dolores Lopez.
She is survived by her husband, Juan Miranda of Odessa; seven sons, Manuel Miranda, Gene Miranda, Anthony Miranda, Andrew Miranda, Mark Miranda, Michael Miranda and Malachi Miranda, all of Odessa; six daughters, Consuelo Ramirez, Patsy Rios, Martha Miranda, Gloria Miranda, Tabitha Payne and Mary Miranda, all of Odessa; one brother, Marcelo Garcia of Odessa; two sisters, Jesus Garcia and Catherine Garcia, both of Odessa; 29 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Malachi Miranda, Michael Miranda, Jasper (Andy) Miranda, Michael Joseph Miranda, Richie Miranda and Jesse Dominguez.
A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday Jan. 19, 2004, at Odessa Funeral Home Chapel.
Chapel Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, at Odessa Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Clark and Humberto Porras officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery.

Timothy J. Murphy

MIDLAND — The Rev. Monsignor Timothy J. Murphy, P.A., V.G., J.C.L., passed away Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at St. Ann Parish in Midland, Texas. The Monsignor, 68, was pastor of the Midland parish since July 1 1996.
A rosary and wake service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 19, at St. Ann Church. The Rev. Rodney White, associate pastor at St. Ann, will lead the service, and the Rev. Monsignor Larry J. Droll, Chancellor of the diocese of San Angelo, will deliver the eulogy. Msgr. Murphy’s body will lie in state at St. Ann through the night, watched over by an Honor Guard from the Knights of Columbus.
The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 at St. Ann. The Most Rev. Michael D. Pfeifer, OMI, Bishop of San Angelo, will be the principal celebrant, and the Most Rev. Joe S. Vasquez, auxiliary bishop of Houston, will the principal concelebrant. Other concelebrants will include the priests of the diocese of San Angelo and Msgr. Murphy’s priest friends from throughout the country. The Rev. Msgr. Frederick Nawarskas, pastor of Holy Family Church in Abilene, will be the homilist.
Following the mass, Msgr. Murphy’s body will be taken to Calvary Catholic cemetery in San Angelo, where it will be interred next to his father. It is anticipated that the services at Calvary cemetery will take place between 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Following the interment, a reception and visitation with the family will take place at Holy Angels’ Parish Hall.
Timothy J. Murphy, the oldest of three children, was born Aug. 31, 1935, in Queens, N.Y., to Timothy and Nora Murphy. He attended his St. Bartholomew’s grade school in Elmhurst, Queens, and graduated from Cathedral Seminary High School in Brooklyn. He completed his college studies at St. Mary’s Seminary in Kentucky, and his theological studies at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood on May 26, 1962, for the diocese of San Angelo. Following his ordination, Msgr. Murphy was sent to The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he completed his studies in Canon Law and was awarded the Licentiate Degree.
Msgr. Murphy served as pastor at Holy Angels Church in San Angelo from 1969 to 1982; at Holy Family Church in Abilene from 1982 to 1996; and at St. Ann in Midland since 1996.
Additionally, he served as chancellor of the diocese of San Angelo from 1970 to 1980; and Vicar General of the diocese from 1980 to the present. Over the years, he also served as superintendent of schools, was a diocesan consultor and a member of the Presbyterial Council, the Priests’ Personnel Board, the Priests’ Pension Plan and the Diocesan Finance Council. He has been the judicial vicar of the diocese since 1967.
During his pastorates, Msgr. Murphy oversaw the construction of churches at Holy Angels in San Angelo in 1982, and Holy Family in Abilene in 1985; and anew office building at St. Ann, which was dedicated only a few days on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
He is survived by his sister, U.S. Air Force Col. Patricia “Pat” Murphy of San Antonio; and his brother, Emmet Murphy of Westlake Village, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was honored by Pope John Paul II, who in 1989, named him a Chaplain of Honor to His Holiness, and then, subsequently, in 1995, promoted him to Protonotary Apostolic, the highest degree of domestic prelate in the Catholic Church.
He will be particularly missed by the parishioners of St. Ann, Holy Family and Holy Angels parishes, as well as by his brother priests and all the people of the diocese.
“You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek . . . well done, good and faithful servant.”
