ODESSA -- Maria Luz Salazar, 70, of Presidio, a homemaker, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at Medical Center Hospital.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Ojinaga, Mexico. Burial will be at Gardines de San Jose. Local arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.
She was born in La Mar, Colo., and moved to Odessa six years ago from Mexico. She was a Catholic.
Survivors: Husband, Emilio Mercado Rubio of Presidio; sons, Juan Mercado Salazar of Chihuahua City, Mexico, Roman Mercado Salazar of Presidio, Manuel Mercado Salazar of Liberal, Kan., Emilio Mercado Salazar Jr. of Presidio and Salvador Mercado Salazar of Ojinaga, Mexico; daughters, Eloisa Mercado of Juarez, Mexico, Evangelina Mercado of Juarez, Mexico, Maria Luisa M. Salazar of Chihuahua, Mexico; brother, Andres Casado of Juarez, Mexico; sisters, Sofia Salazar and Elisa Salazar, both of Chihuahua, Mexico, Juana Salazar and Isabel Casado, both of Juarez; 31 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Dan Sandel
ODESSA -- Dan Sandel, 67, of Odessa, a retired pipeline welder, died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, at Medical Center Hospital.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hubbard-Kelly chapel with the Rev. Jack Watkins officiating. Burial will be at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
He was born in Kermit and moved to Odessa in 1963 from Kermit. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a Baptist.
Survivors: Wife, Betty Sandel of Odessa; sons, Joe Sandel and Robert Sandel, both of Kenai, Ark., David Sandel of Weatherford, Jon Sandel of Lubbock; daughter, Mary Hubnik of Odessa; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Socorro Diaz
ODESSA -- Socorro Muro Diaz, 64, of Odessa, a homemaker, died Monday, Aug. 17, 1998, at her residence.
Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Luis Cepeda officiating. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.
She was born in Durango, Mexico, and had been a resident of Odessa for 35 years after moving from Sanderson. She was a Catholic.
SURVIVORS: Sons, Lorenzo Diaz, Martin Diaz, Danny Diaz and Angel Diaz, all of Odessa; daughters, Rosemary De La Rosa of Odessa, Margie Stright of Evans, Colo., Delores Diaz, Mary Ann Soto and Betsy Patino, all of Odessa; sisters, Magdalena Moreno, Sofia Ibarra and Juana Diaz, all of Round Rock; brother, Manuel Muro of Round Rock; 25 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Hubert Batchelor
PALESTINE -- Hubert Batchelor, 71, of Cayuga, a retired employee of El Paso Natural Gas Company, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at his residence.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Judson cemetery with the Rev. Thomas R. Taylor officiating. Arrangements by Bailey & Foster Funeral Home.
He was born in Boxelder. He was a veteran of the Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the Assembly of God church.
Survivors: Wife, Patsy Batchelor of Cayuga; sons, Tom Batchelor of Allen, Cary Whalen and Denn Whalen, both of Odessa; brothers, Jesse Batchelor of Hutchins, Floyd Paul Batchelor of Booneville, Mo.; and six grandchildren.

Gabina Renteria
BARSTOW -- Gabina J. Renteria, 89, a homemaker, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at Reeves County Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church with the Rev. Ben Florez officiating. Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. today at Martinez Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be at Barstow cemetery. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.
She was born in Presidio and was a lifetime resident of Barstow. She was a Catholic.
Survivors: Son, Isaias "Chayenne" Renteria of Pecos; daughter, Maria Luz R. Diaz of Wickett; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Reynaldo Sanchez
CRANE -- Reynaldo D. Sanchez, 7, of Crane, a student at Crane Elementary School, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.
Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at Good Shepherd Catholic Church with the Rev. Barry McLean officiating. Burial will be at Crane County cemetery. Arrangements by Schaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
He was born in Odessa and was a lifelong resident of Crane. He was a Catholic.
Survivors: Mother, Juanita Deanda of Crane; father, Rogelio M. Sanchez of Albany, Texas; brother, Natalio Pena Jr. of Midland; sisters, Corina Ortiz and Juanita Ofelia Lozano, both of Crane; and grandparents, Maria Dolores Deanda of Crane, Julio and Sabina Sanchez of San Carlos, Mexico.

Hortense Whitener
ODESSA -- Hortense L. Whitener, 84, of Brandon, Fla., a retired cafeteria worker, died Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, in Brandon, Fla.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hubbard-Kelly Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Troy officiating. Burial will be at Mount Olive cemetery in Big Spring. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
She was born in Dublin. She was a Baptist.
Survivors: Husband, W.D. Whitener of Brandon, Fla.; daughter, Darlene Millican of Brandon, Fla.; son, Max Phillips of El Indio; sisters, Elouise McRae of Big Spring, Vonceil Grimes of Granbury; and four grandchildren.

Mary Curtis

IRAAN -- Mary Curtis, 96, of McCamey, a retired schoolteacher, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, in McCamey Convalescent Center.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Restland cemetery in Iraan with the Rev. Joel Barrett officiating. Arrangements by Richard W. Box Funeral Home.

She was born in Mineola. She was a pianist for the Iraan Methodist Church and the Lions Club until 1991.

Survivors: Three stepdaughters, Norma Rogers of Front Royal, Va., Sharon Gober of Throckmorton and Cindy Long of Saudi Arabia; nine step grandchildren; and six great-step grandchildren.

Efren Granado

FORT DAVIS -- Efren Lyles Granado, 74, of Fort Davis, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, in an Alpine Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the church with burial to follow at St. Joseph’s cemetery with the Rev. Demetrio Ponce officiating. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Home of Marfa.

He was born in Fort Davis. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Survivors: Two brothers, Alfredo Granado Jr. of Fort Davis and Johnny Granado of El Paso; four sisters, Dora Henry and Gloria Dominguez, both of Fort Davis, Virginia Rodriguez of Odessa and Bennie Jiminez of El Campo.

Lonnie James

DALLAS -- Lonnie Franklin James, 72, of Dallas, a retired mechanic, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, in a Dallas nursing home.

A memorial service will be held at a later date as the body was donated to science.

He was born in Runnels County. He was a U.S. Marine during World War II. He was a member of Edmund Boulevard Baptist Church.

Survivors: One son, Ron James of Nashville, Tenn.; two daughters, Leona James of Fort Worth and Debra Woodard of Holden, La.; two sisters, Doris Potter and Betty Hughes of San Angelo; and three grandchildren.

Dick Kettle

GARDENDALE -- Dick Kettle, 87, of Gardendale, a retired Mobile Oil Co. employee, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998, at his residence.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Bethany Christian Church with the Rev. Robert Scofield officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors.

He was born in Brookston. He was a member of Bethany Christian Church and the Gardendale Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors: Wife, Frances Kettle of Gardendale; three sons, Kenneth Kettle and Marvin Kettle of Odessa and Daris Kettle of Rogers, Ark.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Abelina Rambo

ODESSA -- Abelina Samarripa Rambo, 76, of Odessa, a housewife, died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, at New Horizon Nursing Home.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Martinez Funeral Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Luis Cepeda officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill cemetery. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors: Husband, Robert Rambo of Odessa; two sons, Tom Samarripa of Odessa and Hector Rene Samarripa of Camp Casey South Korea; six daughters, Mary Alice Saldana of Midland, Elda Aldrete of San Angelo, Eva S. Molina of Lancaster, Abelina Vargas of Fort Worth, Linda S. Potts of Grand Prairie and Goldie Samarripa of Odessa; one sister, Vera Ortiz of San Antonio; 27 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Sadie Stevens

ODESSA -- Sadie Estelle Stevens, 86, of Odessa, a retired nurse, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 1998.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Inc.

She was born in Kemper County, Miss. She attended the University of Tennessee School of Nursing in Memphis.

Survivors: Son, Sidney C. Stevens of Odessa; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
