Sandra Martin CRANE — Sandra Martin, 60, long-time resident of Crane, passed away Jan. 24, 2002. She was born to Archie Martin and Ethel Scott on Jan. 18, 1942, in Odessa. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, in the Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ellis Lane officiating. Burial will be in Crane County cemetery. Services are under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home. Honorary pallbearers are David Collier, Audwin Gallion, Darrell Harvey, Danny Plummer, Jesse Borrego, and Tim Chadman. She was preceded in death by her father, Archie Martin and her sister, Peggy Foster. She is survived by her mother, Ethel Scott of Crane; her children, Cindy and Randy Benton of Crane, Jeri Blue of Crane and Rhonda Baker of Dublin; grandchildren, Kylee, Carlee, Christopher and Cory of Crane, Lyndsie Tucker of Midland, Jerid Wells of Houston, and Cody, Ashlea and Cassie Baker of Dublin. You are gone from our lives, but will never be forgotten for one moment of each day. You are our best friend, our angel, God’s gift to use for a short while. We were truly blessed to have you. What will we ever do without you, your love, your tender touch. This will be the hardest thing we ever have to endure in our lives, but we know you are where you need to be now … no pain and with the angels who are very lucky to have a wonderful woman as gentle and loving as you. Odis E. “Curly” Nelson ODESSA — Odis E. “Curly” Nelson, 89, of Owasso, Okla., formerly a longtime Odessa resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Select Specialty Hospital. He was born July 27, 1912, to Robert and Ethel Nelson in Antlers, Okla. He was in the Army Air Corps from 1942 until 1945. He was a master sergeant serving in the 44th bomber group stationed in England where he flew the B-224 bomber. He was twice decorated with an Air Medal and Bronze Star. He married Mary Goad on June 20, 1948, in Durant, Okla. That year they moved to Odessa from Oklahoma. He retired from Exxon as a pumper in 1975. He loved to travel by RV and go camping. He made friends easily and loved to talk and joke. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. His wife preceded him in death in 1993. Survivors include his daughter, Helga Bevel and husband Dennis of Owasso, Okla.; sisters, Viola Mullings of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Anna Belle Morgan of Longview; and a grandchild, Krystal Bevel of Owasso, Okla. Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bill Heggemeier officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Services are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Donny Reed Chapman ODESSA — Donny Reed Chapman, 49, of Odessa passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, in Reliance, Wyo. He was born Aug. 8, 1952, in Odessa. He worked in the trucking industry for several years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Chapman of Greeley, Colo.; two sons, Chris Chapman of Austin and Joe Don Chapman of Greeley, Colo.; two daughters, Gabriella Hyatt of Louisiana and Bobbi Chapman of Greeley, Colo.; parents, Ernest and Christine Chapman of Odessa; brother, Ernie Chapman of Odessa; sister, Jenny Griffin of Odessa; a grandchild; and special friend, Debbie Lewis of Odessa. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 24, 2002, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clydell Chapman officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. June Hamm MIDLAND — June Hamm joined her Father in Heaven Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, following an automobile accident. June was born Nov. 18, 1934, in Haskell to Elmer and Gladys Spurlin. In her early adult years, she was an airline flight attendant. In her youth in the 1940s and 1950s in Carlsbad, N.M., she was a rodeo barrel racer, rodeo queen and FFA (Future Farmers of America) sweetheart and 4-H Club sweetheart. She graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1953. June moved from Hobbs, N.M., to Midland in 1975 and was well known in the area as a "legend" in the broadcasting business. June is survived by her daughters, Priscilla Cupp and her husband Buzz of Austin, Pamela Hamm of Midland and Gail Ann Shepard of Phoenix, Ariz.; her mother, Gladys Spurlin of Midland; grandsons, Trevor Cupp, David Shepard and Matthew Hamm; brother, Odell Spurlin and his wife Patty of Ruidoso, N.M.; nephews, Eddy Spurlin of Albuquerque, N.M., and Pat Spurlin of Austin; and niece, Mandy Spurlin Mader of Ruidoso, N.M. Memorial services have been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today, Jan. 24, 2002, at Golf Course Road Church of Christ with Ronnie White officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. At June’s request, memorial contributions may be made to Easter Seals benefiting the Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center, 620 N. Alleghaney Ave., Odessa, Texas, 79761. Barbara Lavon Jackson ODESSA — Barbara Lavon Jackson, age 73, of Odessa died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. She was born April 3, 1928, in Downsville, La. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 24, 2002, in the chapel of Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Jackson married Jack Jackson Feb. 2, 1946, in Winnsboro, La. They moved to Odessa in 1963. She was the retired owner of BJ’s Gift Shop, a life member of VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a Baptist. Her husband, J.W. Jackson, preceded her in death in 1992. She is survived by sons, John Jackson and wife Laura of Carrollton, Larry Jackson and wife Paula of Odessa and Randy Jackson and wife Karen of Mineral Wells; sisters, Shirley Wyles of Monroe, La., Beverly Henson of Shreveport, La., and Frances Henson of Houston; brothers, Gene Waller of Milam, Robert Waller of Grand Saline, Ricky Waller of Florida and Kenneth Waller of Baskin, La.; and grandchildren, Jeff Jackson, Holly Sharp and husband Steven, Heather Bray, Carman Wommack and husband Jim, Tim Jackson, Dusti Jackson, Daniel Jackson, Macci Jackson, Lincoln Finkbeiner and Grant Finkbeiner. Stanley ‘Lee’ Snider ODESSA — Stanley "Lee" Snider, 75, of Odessa passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born Feb. 24, 1926, in Oakland, Calif. He married Patsy Roy July 16, 1954, in San Angelo. He was a building engineer for Montgomery Ward. He is survived by his wife, Patsy A. Snider of Odessa; five sons, Garry "L." Searcy and wife Linda Phillips of Odessa, Terry "R." Snider of Denver, Colo., Kenneth "K.C." Snider and wife Lori Connell of Garden Grove, Calif., Scott Snider and wife Cindy of Anaheim, Calif., and Stanley F. Snider Jr. and wife Dana of Springfield, Mo.; two daughters, Sherry L. Dearlove and husband Mark of Denver, Colo., and Jeanni McGinnis and husband Chris of Odessa; 20 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Todd Allen Treadway ODESSA — Todd Allen Treadway, 39, of Big Spring died at 3:41 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, in a pickup-motorcycle accident north of Big Spring. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Odessa with the Rev. Dean Kelm officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. He was born Oct. 29, 1962, in Dayton, Ohio. He was a resident of Odessa from 1968 to 1995 when he moved to Andrews and later moved to Big Spring in 2000. He graduated from Permian High School in 1981. He received his associate’s degree from Odessa College. He held a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. He received his master’s degree in clinical psychology also from UTPB. He was a licensed psychological associate in 1995 and in 1996, he became a licensed professional counselor in the State of Texas. He was employed at Permian General Hospital in Andrews from November 1994 to October 1999 and was with West Texas Centers for Mental Health and Mental Retardation from November 1999 to November 2001 when he entered private practice with Dr. Michael Downing and Richard Hickam. Mr. Treadway had written the article "Treatment Outcomes of a Seven Week Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program," which was published in the Texas Journal of Rural Health in 1999. He married Sharon Clark Jan. 6, 1995, in Andrews. He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Big Spring; a son, Mykl Clark and his wife Miya of Stanwood, Wash.; a daughter, Jennifer Weir and her husband Bill of Worcester, Mass.; his parents, Marvin and Bonnie Treadway of Odessa; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Josephine and Maurice Root of Seattle, Wash.; and three grandchildren, Patricia, Robbie and Danny. Pallbearers will be Neil Roberts, Allen Roberts, Brian Cooke, Max Decker, Richard Hickam, Doug Mackey, Bill Weir and Wayne Anderson. The family suggests memorials to the Arthritis Foundation, 1330 West Peachtree St., Atlanta, Ga., 30309, or The American Diabetes Association, serving Texas, P.O. Bill Turner ODESSA — Billy Ray Turner, 69, passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, while on a cruise in the Caribbean. He was born May 14, 1932, in Idalou to Denzel Russell Turner and Cora Humphries Turner. He married the love of his life, Ruth Nitcholas, Sept. 20, 1952, in Idalou. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Crescent Park Baptist Church with Dr. Johnny Dickerson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens under the direction of Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Public visitation will be held 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today with the family to receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home. Bill was drafted into the Army in 1952. After leaving the service, he attended Texas Tech University where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in accounting, ranking second in his class and then earning his certified public accountant certificate. He and Ruth moved to El Paso with their son Tommy in June 1958. They moved to Odessa in December 1958 as Bill often said, "With a half worn out half paid-for car, a kid and a half, a trailer full of junk furniture and $200." He worked for Urbane Childers with whom he later formed Childers and Turner. After Mr. Childers retired, Bill and Burt Ferguson formed Turner, Ferguson and Co., which received awards for being one of the top small-to-medium regional accounting firms in the U.S. Giving back to the community was very important to Bill. He was on the board of directors of The Fireman’s Pension Fund, Myer’s Drilling, Odessa Oil Investments and many others. Bill was the chairman of the Appraisal District for Ector County for 20 years and served on the Ector County Independent School Board for 12 years. He was a Jaycee, a longtime member of the Odessa Chamber of Commerce and was active in many other civic organizations. He was treasurer at Crescent Park Baptist Church, where he also served as a deacon. Bill and Ruth loved to travel and after his retirement were able to travel even more than before. The most important things in Bill’s life were his faith and his family. He adored his wife, Ruth, and often said his hobby was "spoiling Ruth." He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and they arranged their travel plans to accommodate the grandchildren’s activities. They bought a house in Ruidoso and loved to spend time there either alone or with the kids and grandkids. He treasured their many friends. Bill was a caretaker. He quietly took care of the vulnerable, the young, the old and the needy. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his grandson, Brett Ryan Turner, who died at the age of 3 with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Theda Ruth Nitcholas Turner; his children, Tommy Turner and wife Lin of Midland, Beth Turner Libson and her husband Dr. David Libson of Odessa and David Russell Turner and his wife Jami of Odessa. He is also survived by two sisters, Polly Turner of Idalou and Sue Kelly of Odessa, and his beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Turner Smith and her husband Kyle of San Antonio, Katie Libson, Laura Libson, Christy Libson, Alexandra Turner, Emily Turner and Miles Turner of Odessa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Crescent Park Baptist Church Building Fund, 3002 E. University Blvd., Odessa, Texas, 79761. "He has achieved success, who has worked well, laughed often and loved much." From that definition you are the most successful man we will ever meet in every way possible. Go with God. We love you.
