Rodolfo Rios
ODESSA - Rodolfo “Rudy” Rios, 61, of Odessa, a laborer, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in Galveston.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rose Hill cemetery with the Rev. Serafin Avnido officiating. Arrangements by Memorial Services.
He was born in McAllen.
SURVIVORS: Son, Rudy Rios of Amarillo; daughters, Angie Rios and Sandra Renteria, both of Odessa, and Michelle Payene of Tishomingo, Okla.; mother, Julia Rubalcado Portillo of Odessa; brother, Robert “Bobby” Rios of Odessa; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Katie Spear
ANDREWS - Katie Spear, 78, of Olton, a retired dispatcher for the Andrews Sheriff’s Department, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at her residence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McNett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kyle Steun officiating. Burial will be at the Andrews Old cemetery. Arrangements by McNett Funeral Home.
She was born in Sulphur Springs and had been a resident of Andrews.
SURVIVORS: Daughter, Brenda Light of Olton; sisters, Jeanette Hosfeld of Cedar Lake, Ind., and Jean Burgess of Alexandria, La.; and a grandson.

Roger Taylor
ODESSA - Roger W. Taylor, 70, of Odessa, a retired employee of a filling station, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital.
Graveside services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday at Rose Hill cemetery with the Rev. Jesus Mercado officiating. Arrangements by Martinez Funeral Home.
He was born in Sylacauga, Ala., and was a lifelong resident of Odessa. He was Catholic.
SURVIVORS: Wife, Rosa Hernandez of Odessa; and daughters, Leticia Hernandez of Odessa and Melissa Springer of Alabama.

James Rowell
AUSTIN - James W. Rowell, 40, of Austin died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, in Austin.
Services are pending with Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Hortensia Matteson
ODESSA - Friends and family of Delia Hortensia Gonzalez Matteson, 74, wish her well on her journey to join her beloved husband and family. She left us Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, to be united with her preceding family and her Lord Jesus, whom she loved.
Brave and headstrong as always, she faced her own mortality with the hope that only comes from great faith.
She was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and had worked in the past as a volunteer for Catholic Charities. She was always one to reach out and lend a hand to those in need.
She will be received into the Lord’s mansion by her husband, Edwin Lee Matteson; son, Joseph Anthony Matteson Sr.; grandson, Joseph Matteson Jr.; and her parents, Macario and Sofia Gonzalez.
She moved to the United States from Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico, in the 1950s. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Cody Matteson and Eddy Matteson as well as all of us she touched with the spark of light that shone so brightly from her.
Heaven’s gain is our loss. Though we mourn our loss, we celebrate her life.
Memorial services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church with Father Pablo Tiong officiating.
Family and friends suggest memorials be made to Community Care Hospice of Odessa.

Ivan A. Shifflet
ODESSA - Ivan A. Shifflet, 84, of Odessa passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness. He was born April 13, 1917, in Mammoth, W.Va. He married the love of his life, Fay I. Walker, in 1939 in Catlettsburg, Ky. Mr. Shifflet had lived in Odessa since 1962. He worked for 20 years in Orange for Dupont and retired in 1982 from Rexene Products after 20 years of service.
He was preceded in death by grandson, Jeffery Alan Shifflet.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Fay Shifflet of Odessa; sons, Gene Shifflet and wife Pat of Houston, Gary Shifflet and wife Helen of Odessa and Ray Shifflet and wife Candy of Granbury; daughters, Charlotte Hanson and Retha Armstrong, both of Odessa; brother, Joe Shifflet of Hampton, Va.; sisters, Lillian Naylor of Florida and Thelma Shifflet of Fayetteville, W.Va.; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The family will meet with friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Feb. 5, 2002, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Reed officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Ivan’s grandsons, Kyle Shifflet, Kevin Shifflet, Eric Armstrong, J.R. Shifflet, Scott Hanson, Gerad Armstrong, G.W. Hanson and Cody Shifflet.
Ivan’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren meant so much to him. They are left with so many great memories of their Pa Pa.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Joe Ernest Six
ODESSA - Joe Ernest Six, age 81, of Odessa died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Hospice House of Odessa. He was born in Ranger to John and Martha Six.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 5, 2002, at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Bill Heggemeier and Dr. Steve Trout officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. at Fairmount cemetery in San Angelo.
Mr. Six enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and eventually became sergeant major of classification, testing and statistical section. He worked and retired after 38 years for TU Electric. He had been a member of the American Business Club for 35 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he worked in the Sunday school class. He also helped distribute food to the needy for more than 13 years. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Rehab Centers, First United Methodist Church or to the Food Bank.
Mr. Six is survived by a sister, Betty Lou Knoll of Holland, Mich.; four nieces, Diane McCrary of Midland, Joan Phillips of Dallas, Johnnie May Homes of Arizona and Georgia Walker of Holland, Mich.; a nephew, John Knoll of Holland, Mich.; and longtime friends, George Collum and family.

Teri L. Smith
ODESSA - Teri L. Smith, 44, of Goldsmith passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at her residence. She was born Nov. 9, 1957, in Mississippi. She married Randy Smith on May 8, 1999, in Goldsmith. She was a longtime resident of Goldsmith and owned the Buckhorn Bar and Grill in Goldsmith for five years. She was a Baptist.
She is survived by her husband, Randy Smith of Goldsmith; son, Jay English of Goldsmith; daughters, Chasity Franco of Dallas, Fanci Thompson of Odessa, Sasha English and Samantha Smith, both of Goldsmith; mother, Elma Louis Blackston and stepfather, Cecil Blackston of Iuka, Miss.; sister, Bonita Adair of Midland; five brothers, Glen Blackston of Birmingham, Ala., Chris Blackston of Odessa, Kent Bradley of Horn Lake, Miss., Ronny Burkett of Arlington, Tenn., and Tim Bradley of Memphis, Tenn.; and four grandchildren, Celina, Issac, Joseph and Brooke.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at First Baptist Church in Odessa with the Rev. Robert Rowe officiating.
The family requests memorials may be made to Star Hospice.

William Woods
ODESSA - William Holt Woods, 88, of Odessa died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born to Charles and Eva Mae Woods on Sept. 22, 1913, in Seymour.
He married Helen Roberson on June 6, 1937, in Waurika, Okla. They moved to Monahans in June 1948. They then moved to Lake Buchanan after he retired from TXU Electric Co. in 1976. He was a resident of Parks Methodist Retirement Village.
His parents; three sisters; his wife, Helen R. Woods; and a grandson, William Lee Melton preceded him in death.
He is survived by his two daughters, Diane Thomas and husband Tommy of Bullard and Marilyn Andjulis and husband Don of Odessa; three grandchildren, Anne Stokes, Allen Melton and Todd Andjulis; and two great-grandchildren, K.C. Melton and Layc Melton.
Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dave Dinneen officiating.
Services are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Frances Carolyn Stallworth Johnston
ODESSA - Frances Carolyn Stallworth Johnston passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at a local care facility.
She was born Aug. 13, 1916, in El Campo to Garland P. and Frances M. Stallworth and graduated from El Campo High School. She moved to Odessa in 1941 where she was employed for many years by GMAC and by Dr. Robert Rowntree. She moved to Midland in 1988. Frances enjoyed a variety of hobbies, which included oil painting.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Leon Johnston; by her sister, Virginia Miller; and by a grandson, Kendahl Alexander.
Mrs. Johnston is survived by a son, G.W. Hauser of Houston; a daughter, Carole Hinkle of Midland; her brother, Dr. Driskill Stallworth of Austin; and two grandchildren, Kyle Alexander and Dr. Sherri Alexander, both of Redondo Beach, Calif.
Private services were held at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa. Arrangements were under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home.
The family requests that memorials be directed to Meals on Wheels, 3301 Sinclair Ave., Midland, Texas, 79707.

Ruby Arlene Alcorn
ODESSA - Ruby Arlene Alcorn, 82, of Odessa, a retired C.S. technician for Medical Center Hospital, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, after a lengthy illness.
Arlene was born March 12, 1919, to the late Herman Emil and Vellie Abney Vogel in Winchell. She married J.C. Alcorn on Dec. 4, 1941. He preceded her in death June 14, 1988. Arlene was also preceded in death by her sisters, Alice Marie Markham and Velma Christine Riordan, and brothers, Sandy Vogel, Dell Vogel, Tom Vogel and Grover Vogel.
Survivors include sons, Michael C. Alcorn of Odessa and Joe Abney Alcorn and his wife, Tali, of Richmond, Va.; a granddaughter, Jane Brawner Alcorn of Richmond; brothers, Luther Vogel of Brownwood, Earl Vogel and wife, Dorthy, of Fort Worth; brother-in-law, Cecil Riordan of Big Spring; and sisters-in-law, Earlene Vogel of Brownwood and Edalene Vogel of May Pearl.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Feb. 5, 2002, at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Braswell officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to express special thanks to the membership of Second Baptist Church and Home Hospice, especially Della, T.J., Cheryl and Holly, for their care and prayers during this difficult time. Also a special thanks to the staff of Hospice House for their support.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Second Baptist Church, 711 E. 17th St., Odessa, Texas, 79761, where Arlene had been a longtime member.
