Denny William Bowman

GALVESTON - With great sadness, wife Pamela Scott Bowman and children Teresa, Paul and Andrew Bowman, mourn the loss of beloved husband, father, and friend Dennis William Bowman. Denny was released on July 31, 2004, from a long and difficult battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in Portland, Maine in 1940, Denny was a graduate of Cheverus High School where his talents as a swimmer resulted in a scholarship to the University of Houston. A member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, Denny graduated with both a B.A. and M.A.

After enrolling in Naval ROTC and attending Officer Candidate School, Denny was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy. Following his commissioning, Denny volunteered for Underwater Demolition Team training and became a Navy Frogman, graduating from UDT Class 33 East Coast, Team 21. Honored to be chosen by the Navy, in collaboration with NASA, to participate in the recovery of the astronauts of the Gemini space exploration missions. Denny, along with his teammates, recovered Gemini Missions 6, 9, 10, 11, and 12. Denny separated from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander.

Denny's love for the sea, and scuba diving in particular, continued throughout his civilian life.

His intimate knowledge of the decompression process led to work in the building and testing of underwater exploration and work vessels at Reading and Bates, and later the Hyperbaric Facility at the Marine Biomedical Institute in Galveston, Tx. Denny was subsequently asked to participate as an aquanaut in the underwater living, oceanographic, and marine biological experiment Tektite II, in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, in which teams of diver researchers lived in habitats on the ocean floor.

Denny's passion for and expertise in the water served him particularly well as a scuba instructor. Over many years, Denny found great joy in teaching diving to hundreds of students, many of whom were friends, and others who became friends through diving.

Denny eventually began a new career with the Moody Foundation as a program officer, focusing on the Mary Moody Northen Amphitheater, the renovation of the Santa Fe Building and the creation of the Railroad Museum housed within the Shearn Moody Plaza. Starting in 1981, and continuing until the final stage of his illness, Denny worked with both the Harris & Eliza Kempner Fund and subsequently the H. Kempner Trust Association where he was responsible for a wide variety of tasks executing the philanthropy and asset management missions of the Kempner family.

Denny, along with friend and partner Bob Holmes, was also known to many as the owner of Galveston's Kwik Kar Wash and will be fondly remembered by the diverse and dedicated customers who knew him as a respectful, generous, and accommodating owner/operator.

Denny was an active vocal member of the Galveston community, participating in several PTA organizations and working sincerely for the improvement and integration of the Galveston Public Schools. He loved (and lived in several of) the old Victorian homes within the Historical District and served on the boards of several local charities and hospitals, including the Red Cross and the Broadway Beautification Committee. In December, 2003, Denny traveled to Cuba on a private charitable mission.

In 1990, at the age of 50, Denny was recalled to the service of his country and was deployed stateside as a reservist in the Coast Guard during the First Gulf War.

Denny is survived by his wife Pamela, her children Heather and husband J.D. White, Ryan, and Erin Scott, and former wife Phyllis Butler, and their children Teresa, Paul, and Andrew, wife Rachel and their children Ruby and Leo. Denny is also survived by his cousin Cindy Mulkern, his brother's daughter, Amanda Bowman Nathan and her mother Pamela Gilbert, and his “third son," Kenji Akaike. Denny was predeceased by his mother Margaret Morse Bowman, father William Henry Bowman, and brother David Morse Bowman.

There are many kind people who loved Denny and will surely miss him, but perhaps none more than his cherished father and mother-in- Law, Paul and Jewell Huggins.

There are also many wonderful individuals who fought valiantly both to treat Denny's illness and to help him be comfortable through its course. The family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Robert Wolff of M.D. Anderson, and Dr. Barbara Thompson of UTMB, and the dedicated professionals of the Hospice Care Team, Inc.

The family also deeply thanks Nonie Thompson, Shrub and Peaches Kempner, the entire Kempner family, Bob and Janet Holmes, and Doug and Janola Baer for their tireless and selfless friendship to Denny -- most especially during his trying final months, weeks, and days. Their goodness will never be forgotten.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 7, 2004, with family visitation starting at 9:30 a.m., at Sacred Heart Church, 1302 Broadway, Galveston, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to the Grand 1894 Opera House, the Rosenberg Library, the Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, or the East End Historic District, all in Galveston, Texas; or to the American Cancer Society.
