GEORGE M. LLANES

A Funeral Mass for George M. Llanes, 83, of Palacios, was held March 31, 2001 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church with Rev. Charles Dwomoh officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mr. Llanes was born April 23, 1917 in Citrus Grove, Matagorda County, Tx. to the late Cosme and Anita Marmolejo Llanes. He died March 29, 2001 at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a crane operator with Alcoa Aluminum co. and a member of Alcoa's 25-year club. He is survived by his wife of 62-years, Feliciana Garza Llanes of Palacios; daughters and sons-in-law Gloria and Sam Garcia of Alvin, and Josefa 'Jodie' and Richard Cedillo of New Braunfels, Tx.; sons and daughters-in-law George Llanes, Jr. of Bellflower, CA., Domingo and Celia Llanes of Palacios, Gilbert and Lupita Llanes of Pasadena, Tx., and David and Debbie Llanes of Alvin, Tx.; sisters Mary Flores of Palacios and Grace Morales of Rockdale, Tx., brothers Demetrio Llanes of Palacios, Lawrence Llanes of Hobbs, NM, Tim Llanes of Texas City, and Canto Llanes of Corpus Christi; 19 grandchildren, and 39 great-grandchildren.

LEETTA MAE HARVEY

Funeral services for Leetta Mae Harvey, 87, of Palacios, were held March 29, 2001 at First Baptist Church of Palacios with Revs. Hollas Hoffman and Gary Rodgers officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mrs. Harvey was born Nov. 2, 1913 in Matagorda County to the late Samuel Bradley and Montie Alice Anderson Lee. She died March 27, 2001. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Palacios and the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post No. 2467 in Palacios. She is survived by her daughter, Delores Mae VanDyke of Lockhart; sons, Jeffie Harvey, Charles Harvey and Terry Lee Harvey, all of Palacios; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Harvey; parents; sisters, Helen Pausley and Leona Speed; and brothers, George Anderson, Loyal Lee and Clinton Lee. Pallbearers were Tim Nyquist, Richard Ripke, Paul Kubecka, Robby Kubecka, Kyle Harvey and Jeremy VanDyke.

JANICE BURNES

Graveside services for Janice Burnes, 57, of Kempner Texas and formerly of Palacios, were held March 29, 2001 at Midway cemetery near Goldsboro, Tx. with Rev. Scott Mayer officiating. Mrs. Burnes was born in Gorman, Tx. to Margaret Betterton Day and Charles Robinson Day. She died at her residence on March 27, 2001. She graduated from Gorman High School in 1962 and attended Tarleton State University and received her Bachelors in Elementary Education from McMurray College in 1966. She received her Masters of Education from Sam Houston State in 1980. She taught in Copperas Cove, Ranger, West Hardin and Kountz, Kaufman, Bay City and Palacios ISDs. She also worked with the Abilene Regional Council on Drugs and Alcohol. She is survived by her husband, Sam Burnes of Kempner; two sons, Conan of Waco and Samuel of Levelland; a brother, Billy Day of Dallas; and a sister, Joan Butler of Gorman, Tx.

EMILIO LARA

Funeral services for Emilio Lara, 66, of Blessing, were held March 13, 2001 at St. Peters Catholic Church in Blessing with the Rev. Samuel Appiasi officiating. Interment was at St. Peters Catholic Church. Mr. Lara was born Aug. 8, 1934, in San Juan, to the late Cruz and Francisca Lara. He died March 9, 2001. He was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Lara; daughters, Lora Metcalf of Rochelle, Ill. and Donna Argon of Friendswood; sons, Jesus Lara of Clear Lake, Adrian Lara of Nasa Bay, Rojelio Lara of Santa Fe, Mario Lara and Tomaz Lara, both of Memphis, Tenn. and Eugene Lara of Blessing; sister, Lisa Pendleton of Blessing; brothers, Porfilio Lara, Cruz Lara Jr., Vincent Alvarado and Tony Alvarado, all of Blessing, and Lino Lara of Rochelle, Ill.; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by: son, Arturo Lara; and sister, Maria Soto.

JOHN V. OTTINO

Funeral services for John 'Jay" V. Ottino, 70, of El Campo were held March 4, 2001 at the Triska Funeral Home Chapel in El Campo, with Deacon Jarrel Nohavitza officiating. Interment was Monday, March 5, at Houston National cemetery. He died March 2. A native of Palacios, he was born Nov. 16, 1930 to the late John R. and Dorothy Roach Ottino. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the Korean War, he was a retired manager of Rice Belt Warehouse in Bay City. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, American Legion, St. Philip's Catholic Church, the DAV, VFW and was a past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus in Blessing. Survivors include the widow, Mary Ottino of El Campo; daughter, Debbie Kovasovic of East Bernard; two sisters, Josephine Gonzales of Palacios and Margie Acosta of Bay City; and one grandson. Memorials may be made to the El Campo Elks Scholarship Fund.

TINA LOFF

Tina Loff, 40, of Houston, died Feb. 19, 2001. Rosary and funeral mass were held at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, with the Rev. Benjamin Smistrla, celebrant. Interment was at Memorial Oaks cemetery, Houston. She was born in Houston on Sept. 29, 1960 to the late Frank W. Vivian and Polly Commander Vivian Titus. A devoted mother and spouse, Tina is survived by her husband, Aaron, son of the late Arvid Loff of the Carancahua Community; her two children, Joshua Ripple and Kayla Loff; her god-child, Adele Carlson; Willie Ripple, Jr., father of Joshua Ripple; numerous relatives and many friends, old and new; along with her 'other children"Ñthree dogs, three cats and a rooster. Always reads with a warm smile, Tina struck up friendships everywhere she went. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Ambrose, where she was baptized, confirmed, married and where both her children were baptized and currently serve as altar servers. An avid lover of animals, Tina spent 20 years as supervisor of an animal clinic where she was much loved by the clientele, compassionately dispensing advice, guidance and consolation to clients and patients.

MARIA DeLOS SANTOS GALVAN

Funeral mass for Maria DeLos Santos Galvan, 76, of Blessing, were held Feb. 26, 2001 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Blessing, with Fr. James R. Nischan officiating. A native of Paso Real, Tx., she was born April 25, 1924 to the late Margarito and Petra Rodriguez DeLos Santos. She died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001. She was a resident of Blessing for the past 40 years and a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Antonio Galvan, Sr., of Blessing; daughters and sons-in-law: Gloria and Tony Alvarado of Blessing, Estella and Pete Soliz of Clute, Ester and Jimmy Rodriguez of Francitas and Becky Galvan of Bay City; sons and daughters in-law: Marcelino Galvan, Tony Galvan, Jr. and wife Susan, Carlos Galvan, Migel Galvan, Sr., and wife Mary Jane, Daniel Galvan, Sr. and wife Mary Rose, Robert Galvan, Sr. and wife Bea, Alexander Galvan, all of Blessing, and Eddie Galvan and wife Janie of Bay City; two sisters, Lupe Cantu and Antonia Zartuche of Harlingen; 35 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jose DeLos Santos and Florencio DeLos Santos. Named pallbearers were Ricky Galvan, David Vincent Galvan, Ruben Alvarado, Mike Galvan, Jr., Daniel Galvan, Jr., Jason Galvan, Ernie Esquivel and Jimmy Rodriguez. All grandchildren were named honorary pallbearers.

WALTER CHRISTIAN BRAM

Funeral services for Walter Christian Bram, 96, of Danevang, were held Feb. 25, 2001 at Danevang Lutheran Church with the Rev. Laird Engle officiating. Interment was at Danevang Lutheran cemetery. Mr. Bram born Jan. 29, 1905, in Matagorda County, to the late Marius and Christina Christiansen Bram. He died Feb. 22, 2001. He was a retired mechanic and a member of Danevang Lutheran Church. He is survived by daughters, Peggy Schomburg of Stafford, Geneva Wilson of Palacios and Sybil Lambright of Haughton, La.; sons, Clifton Bram of Danevang and Tommy Bram of El Campo; sister, Clara Sifford of El Campo; brothers, Emil 'Jack" Bram and Otto Bram, both of Danevang and Elve Bram of El Campo; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Recie Mae Bram; and parents. Pallbearers were Craig Bram, Doug Schomburg, Chris Schomburg, Steven Wilson, Rick Lambright and John Armatta. Honorary pallbearers were Kimberly Cooper, Rhonda Huitt, Lori Armatta, Recie Staff, Loretta Lambright, Nashay Bram and Jennifer Bram. Memorials may be made to Danevang Lutheran Church or the Danish Historical Society of Danevang.

ANNIE MAE HURTA

Funeral services for Annie Mae Hurta, 76, of Midfield were held Friday, Feb. 23, 2001 at Taylor Bros. Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Adamson officiating. Eulogist was Ona Lee Pierce. Interment was at Hawley cemetery, Blessing. She died Monday, Feb. 19 at Bay Villa Nursing home in Bay City. She was born Feb. 28, 1924 in Sealy to the late John J. and Emily Esterak Swinky. A resident of Midfield since 1973, she was a member of the Midfield Community Church, a member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Cecil Lee Post No. 649; a member of the Midfield Extension Homemakers Club, and was very active in the 4-H clubs of Matagorda County. In 1985, Mrs. Hurta received the Homemaker of the Year Award; in May of 1994, she received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Midfield Volunteer Fire Department and EMS; and in March of 1996, she received a 50-year members Award of Texas Association for Family and Community Education. Survivors include one daughter, LaVerne Hicks of Midfield; two sons and a daughter-in-law: Marvin and Nona Hurta of Ashby and Lawrence Hurta of Midfield; sisters: Wilma Vavra of El Maton, Frances Dusek and husband Ray of East Bernard, Doris Johs and husband Sonny of Blessing, Margaret Fehmel and husband Bill of Bay City, Geraldine Strelec and husband Edwin of Edna, and Patricia Scott and husband Gary of Clear Lake; brothers: Edward Swinky and wife Helen of Bay City, and Johnny Swinky and wife Loreen of Florida; eight grandchildren, Lynda Brooks of Edna, Brenda Stewart of Tekamah, NB, Kimberly Hurta of Bay City, Wendy Saha and husband Eric of Blessing, Jason Hurta of Edna, Chad Hurta of Van Vleck, Russell Hicks and wife Rebecca of Aransas Pass, and Ashley Hurta of Bay City; and eight great-grandchildren. Also daughter-in-law: Priscilla Hurta-Skalicky of Edna; sister-in-law Edith Hurta of Midfield; and brothers-in-law A.W. Hurta and wife Totsy of Midfield and Bill Herrin of Palacios. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Edward Hurta, Sr. in 1995; a son, Edwin Edward Hurta, Jr. in 1992; by two sisters, Louise Knebel Boling and Emily Herrin; and a brother, Bennie Swinky. Pallbearers were Russell Hicks, Jason Hurta, Chad Hurta, Eric Saha, Ralph Petersen and Bill Hurta. Memorials may be made to the Midfield EMS or Midfield Community Church.

WARRIE WINNER WOODROW WILSON SCHICKE

Funeral services for Warrie Winner Woodrow Wilson Schicke, 83, of Midfield, were held Feb. 17, 2001 at the Palacios Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hollie Briscoe officiating. Interment was at Palacios cemetery. Mr. Schicke was born Feb. 6, 1918 at Schicke Point, Calhoun Co. to the late Charles and Minnie Osterman Schicke. He was the youngest of 14 children. He was a lifelong resident of Schicke Point up until four years ago when he moved to Midfield. He was a member of the Baptist Church and attended Carancahua Chapel and St. Anthony's Catholic Church. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and a member of Palacios Queen-Hamlin VFW Post 2467. He retired from Alcoa Aluminum after 30 years. He was an avid outdoorsman and spent a great deal of his time hunting, fishing, and gardening. He usually gave away the ducks, geese, fish and vegetables to anyone who stopped by to visit or listen to one of his many stories. He is survived by his wife, Nellie Lemeke Schicke of Midfield; daughter and son-in-law June Ann and Ronnie Murray of Corpus Christi; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Jack Anders of Lolita, Tx.; two grandsons and spouses, Andy and Tammie Murray, and Britt and Robin Murray, all of Corpus Christi; great-grandchildren Shey, Collin, and Angelia Murray of Corpus Christi; stepsons and spouses Jesse and Sheri Shindler of Blessing, Danny and Dianna Shindler of Bay City, Phillip and Jerri Lou Shindler of Columbia, Mo.; step-grandchildren Bill Donica, Somer and Lacy Shindler of Blessing, Kacy Shindler of Bay City, and Heidi and Holli Shindler of Columbia, Mo. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anita Katherine LeBlanc Schicke. Pallbearers were W. A. 'Billy" Stuhrenberg, Paul Abraham, Roger Lovell, Bret and Andy Murray, and Bill Shindler. Honorary pallbearer was Percy Venglar.
