Rick Alston, age 59 of Coleman, died Sunday, May 8, 2005 at his residence. No services are scheduled at this time. His body will be cremated.

He was born Cecil Rodrick Alston on April 7, 1946 in Sweetwater, the son of the late Cecil Alston and Velma Alston Fulcrod. He grew up and attended school in Sweetwater and had lived in Coleman for the last 30 years. He worked at the Brick and Tile Plant and for Gardner Electric.

Survivors include three daughters, Tammy Bennett and Candy Fleck both of Rapid City, Dakota; Kristi Raborn of Abilene; his mother, Velma Fulcrod of Sweetwater, three sisters and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and one granddaughter.

Orin Smith, age 85 of Coleman and formerly of Hydesville, California, died Sunday, May 8, 2005 at his residence surrounded by his family. No services are planned. His body will be cremated.

He was born Orin Eugene Smith on December 17, 1919 in Loleta, California, the son of Harold Arthur Smith and Hattie Irene Amen. He grew up and attend school in Loleta and Rohnerville, California. He served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946. He married Nancy Lea Ridenour on February 6, 1960 in Reno, Nevada. He worked in the lumber industry as a Cat Skinner and retired after working 18 and a half years from the Fortuna Union High School as a custodian and school bus driver. He volunteered with Cancer Society and was a member of the Moose Lodge. He moved to Coleman a year ago.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Smith of Coleman; three children, Leanna Greenbush of Lynn Haven, Florida, Karen Stamp of Coleman, Peter Smith of Eureka, California; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Marge Smith of Fresh Water, California, Cliff and Nora Smith of Mad River, California, Vernon and Linda Smith of Fortuna, California, Ferris and Adrian Smith of Chico, California; one sister, Ruby Oliveira of Fortuna, California; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers.

The family would like to thank Hospice of the Big Country and United Health Care for all their help and support and special thanks to Ken & Jen Brixey.

Wiley Donald (Don) Newton entered this world August 7, 1931, at Burkett, Texas. He left this life quietly and peacefully, Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at the Hearthstone Assisted Living Center in Irving, Texas, following an exhaustive struggle with cancer. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 5, 2005 at the Stacy cemetery in McCulloch County, with Mike Riley officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Don graduated from Burkett High School and attended the University of Texas at Austin and Southwest State Teachers College, now Texas State University, at San Marcos. He was called to serve his country during the Korean Conflict and is a veteran of the United States Army, having served in Germany and France. He began his professional career with IBM in New York City and later transferred to the Dallas and Fort Worth offices. He left the world of computers to become a partner in Newton Chevrolet-Oldsmobile in Kaufman, and was a partner in Howard and Newton’s Forney Motors and Car Wash in Forney, from which he retired to enjoy his various hobbies.

Don is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ruth Cox Newton of Rockwall, a daughter, Carol Ann Embrey of St. Louis, Missouri; a grandson Aaron Douglas Newton and his wife Jennifer of Rockwall, a great-granddaughter, Megan Newton of Rockwall; a brother, Wayne C. Newton of Brownwood; a nephew, John Klarfield of Houston and three nieces, Mary Kay Coel of Houston, Jane Ann Weinrich of Lenexa, Kansas, Bonnie Anderson of Fleetwood, North Carolina.

He will surely be missed by many wonderful friends, "in-law" relatives and his devoted companion, "little dog," Elsie Ann Newton.

He was preceded in death by his son, Barry Don Newton, his parents, Wylie M. and Estie Cochran Newton, a brother Byron Newton and a sister, Mildred Klarfield.

For those desiring, because of Don’s love and compassion for animals, it would honor him to have memorials made to a pet care organization, the Stacy-Doole cemetery Association, P. O.Box 686, Doole, Texas 76836 or a charity of your choice.

GERARD PODLEVSKY, age 49, of Burkett, died Sunday, May 1, 2005 at Coleman Healthcare Center. His body will be cremated and no services are planned. Arrangements were made by Stevens Funeral Home.

Gerard Podlevsky was born August 30, 1955 in Brooklyn, New York, a son of Simone Petitnicolas and the late Morris H. Podlevsky. Gerard grew up in Long Island, New York and Los Angeles, California and attended school in Los Angeles. He was married to Gail Sue Coffey in California and she preceded him in death on March 6, 2004. He moved to Burkett in 1985 and was a mechanic. He was Catholic.

Survivors include two sons, Brandon Podlevsky and Derek Podlevsky both of Burkett, Texas; his mother, Simone Gasser of Newport Richey, Florida; one brother, Robert Podlevski of Burkett, Texas; one nephew, Daniel Podlevski of Ft. Worth, Texas.

T. R. COFFEY, age 85, of Burkett died Friday, April 29, 2005 at an Abilene hospital. Graveside funeral service was held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2005 at Burkett cemetery Pavilion with Rev. Jeff Dean officiating. Services were under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home, Coleman.

T. R. Coffey was born January 12, 1920 in Echo, Coleman County, Texas, a son of George Coffey and Winnie Tabor Coffey Melton. He grew up in Echo and Hardin and attended school at Hardin. T. R. lived in Phoenix, Arizona for many years where he was a heavy equipment mechanic and welder. He moved to Burkett in 1995 and was a Baptist.

Survivors include three children, Jan Aristando of Coleman, Texas, Vickie Stokes of Sprague River, Oregon and Theodore Coffey, Jr. of Elk Creek, California; two sisters, Miriam Kuebler of Burkett and Sue Hill of Las Lunas, New Mexico; 12 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four children, Gordon Coffey, Linda Podlevsky, Roy Lee Coffey and Gail Podlevsky; and a grandson Tim Podlevsky.

Pallbearers were Scott Stokes, Bob Podlevsky, Ted Coffey, Jr., Bill Webb, Danny Podlevsky, Brandon Podlevsky.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

BETTY JO (MEMAW) HAYES, age 67, of Coleman, died Sunday, May 1, 2005 at a San Angelo hospital. Graveside funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m.on Thursday, May 5 at the Coleman City cemetery Pavilion with Rev. Daniel Stovall officiating. Services are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

She was born Betty Jo Cones on September 26, 1937 in Brown County, Texas, a daughter of the late Charlie Lee Cones and Lillian Mae Lambert Cones. She grew up in the May area and graduated from May High School in 1956. She was married to John Hayes in 1967 and he preceded her in death in 1990. She lived in Blackwell for 13 years before moving to Coleman in 1980. She was a housewife and a nurse’s aide. She was a Baptist and a member of the Humane Society.

Survivors include one son, James and wife Jennifer Mitchell of Talpa, Texas; one daughter, Jackie and husband Lloyd Parks, Jr. of Talpa; seven grandchildren, Christopher Coalson, MacKenzie Coulson, Kaysie Mitchell, Logan Mitchell, D. J. Mitchell, Trisha Russell, Colton Russell; four great-grandchildren, Brianna, Rebel, Justice, Deacon; a special friend, Linda Christian; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Family visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.

JOHN BARKEMEYER, age 72, of Coleman, passed away Friday, April 29, 2005 at Senior Care in Denton. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2005 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Northway officiating. Burial will follow in the Coleman City cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

John Barkemeyer was born November 21, 1932 in Cameron, Texas, a son of Henry D. and Olivia Juergens Barkemeyer. He grew up and attended school in Cameron and moved to Coleman as a young man. He was married to Nila Christine Kirby and she preceded him in death in 1960. He was later married to Frances Gould. He worked for a number of years at the brick and tile plant and retired from the City of Coleman. He attended the Men’s Downtown Sunday School Class.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances Ann Barkemeyer of Coleman and Kay Roach of Denton, Texas; four brothers, Henry Barkemeyer, Robert Barkemeyer both of Coleman, L. C. Barkemeyer of Cross Plains, Texas and William Barkemeyer of Temple, Texas; one granddaughter, Amber Curry of Denton, Texas; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Templeton; two brothers, Willie Barkemeyer and Ernest Barkemeyer; and a special friend, Maxie Morris.

Family visitation will be held on Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Stevens Funeral Home in Coleman.

Heaven is rejoicing at the homecoming of Luke Pricer, 84 who passed away Friday, April 29th 2005 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Services will be held at 2 pm Monday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel in Coleman, Texas with Brother Terry Bowman officiating.

Luke was born December 4th, 1920 in Coleman County to John Thomas and Dollie Pricer.

He married Glynda Myrl Gober on March 27th, 1948. He was a farmer from 1946 to 1956 in Coleman, Texas. He was a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Abilene, Texas for 31 years. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas where he was a Deacon. He served the Lord there for 41 years. They moved to Wichita Falls, Texas in August of 2002 where he was a member of Lamar Baptist Church and continued to serve the Lord.

Luke graduated from Novice High School as Valedictorian of his class May 5th 1939. He was a member of Who's Who. He served his country during World War 11, as a airplane mechanic from 1941 until October of 1945.

Luke is survived by his beloved wife Glynda Myrl (Gober) Pricer of Wichita Falls, son Randell Dean Pricer and his wife Cindy of Wichita Falls, son Gaylon Lee Pricer of Denton, Three grandchildren, Scott Lee and Deana Marsa' Pricer of Plano and Amy Renae Pricer of Denton, Two sisters Mamie Pricer, Nell Hart and his brother John Pricer all of Coleman, and a number of nieces and nephews and his little pal Nikki (dog).

He was preceded in death by parents John and Dollie Pricer, brothers, Joe, Bert, Grady Pricer and sister Lillie Pricer

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 Monday at Stevens Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family request that Memorials be made to The American Heart Association.

Longtime Coleman resident and retired merchant Eva Jean Stone Choate died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, in San Antonio.

A resident of Coleman since 1954, she was 90.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 29, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in Coleman City cemetery.

Born into a pioneer Eastland County family on Christmas Day 1914, she was the daughter of Joe and Mary Tucker who farmed in the Alameda community. Four sisters and five brothers preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death in 1968 by her husband, C.G. "Doc" Stone, with whom she operated Anthony’s department store from 1954 to 1969, and in 1990 by Edward B."Ed" Choate, a retired educator.

Survivors include her two daughters, Theo Leita Baron and her husband, Sam, of Abilene, and O’Lene Stone of San Antonio. She also had three grandchildren, Debbie McConnell of Atlantic, Iowa; Gary Scott of Pollock, La., and Susie Baron of Midland. And she leaves eight great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Her nephews and grandson-in-law will serve as pallbearers.
