Martha Ann Baze McLeod
Martha Ann Baze McLeod, of Llano, passed away on Friday, February 21, after a long and courageous battle against ALS. Martha was born November 28, 1956, in Mason, to Billy White Baze and Bobbie Schmidt Baze. She was preceded in death by her father on May 25, 2000. She was raised in Mason where she was a member of the Methodist Church. Martha attended Mason Schools, graduating in 1975. She was an avid girl scout and served as junior high cheerleader. She was a wonderful cook, and before she became ill with ALS, had a catering service. Martha was a loving mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and friend. Her struggle against ALS was an inspiration to others as she was never complaining and never felt sorry for herself.
Martha is survived by her son, Mark McLeod and wife, Desiree, of Llano; her mother, Bobbie Baze of Mason; her three sisters, Ebbie Sutton and husband, Quade, of Sonora, Rebecca Lehmberg of Mason, and Susy Walker and husband, Jimmy, of San Saba. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Michelle McLeod and Regan McLeod, and uncle, Gordon Schmidt, and her nephews, Bill and David Lehmberg of Lubbock and Clay Walker of San Saba. Among the many people that were very special to Martha are her cousin and care-giver, Carol Jordan, care-giver, Janet Nunez and special nurse, Carol Evans.
Funeral services were held on Monday, February 24, at Mason Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim McClain officiated. Interment icon followed at the Gooch cemetery in Mason.
Serving as pallbearers were Daniel Gainer, Jon Luchini, Mike Starks, Mike Clark, Elton Hiley, and Matt Baker
For those desiring to send memorials, the family would recommend the ALS Association.
Funeral services were under the direction of Mason Funeral Home.

Frances Bessie Laushman Pittman
Funeral services were held on January 28, 2003, at the National cemetery in Bushnell, Florida, for Frances Bessie Laushman Pittman, 71, of Ocklawaha, Florida.
Mrs. Pittman was born on February 10, 1931, in Odessa, to Sophia and Leo Laushman and attended Seymour High School in 1948-1949. She married Norwood Pittman on July 6, 1950.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Norwood Pittman; a daughter, Patty of Slater, South Carolina; a brother, Leo Laushman of Kerrville; two sisters Helen Morrow of Junction and Mary L. Davis of Utamilca, Florida; nieces, nephews and many grandchildren.
The Laushman’s lived in Junction in the late 30’s with their children John, Leo, Frances, Mary and Helen.

Petra Abilez
Petra Abilez, age 81, of Junction, passed away Sunday, June 8, 2003, at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Petra was born May 13,1922, in Seguin. She married Andres Abilez, Sr. on August 26, 1938, in Junction. Petra and Andy were married for sixty-four years and nine months, making their home in Junction and raising a family of nine children.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at Graham Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Cook officiating. Burial followed in the Little Mexico cemetery.
Pallbearers were Benny Ybarra, Phillip Ybarra, Dwayne Abilez, Aaron Abilez, Michael Chavez and Jamie Garcia. Honorary pallbearers were Isaias Ybarra, Gary Ybarra, Oscar J. Abilez, John Paul Chavez, Donnie Chavez, Cesario J. Martinez and Gerardo Lopez.
Survivors include her husband, Andres Abilez, Sr. of Junction; four sons, Andy Abilez, Jr. and Oscar Abilez, both of Junction, Leonard Abilez of Madisonville and Freddy Abilez of Humble; five daughters, Maria Ybarra and Oneria Chavez, both of Crowley, Alice Lopez of Junction, Velia Garcia of Arlington and Celia Herandez of Spring; a brother, Santos Perez of Ft. Worth; twenty-six grandchildren, forty-seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Frances Alberta Wootan Nelson
Frances Alberta Wootan Nelson, 93, passed away June 7, 2003, in the Menard Manor. Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 10, at 10 a.m. in Rest Haven cemetery in Menard with Brother Mike Riley officiating.
Alberta was born November 2, 1909, in Mason County to Thomas Jefferson and Lilly Mae Eaton Wootan. She taught school in Menard and Kimble County briefly before moving to Wharton. There she met and married Claude Nelson.
She taught in Wharton County public schools for 14 years and at Wharton County Junior College for 18 years. While teaching at the college she helped establish and direct the noted Wharton Co. Jr. College Starlet drill team. She retired in 1970. She and her husband then moved to Menard in 1978.
Alberta was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, five brothers and one sister.
She is survived by two sisters, Dell Yvonne Parker of Junction and Mozelle Benton of Menard; four sister-in-laws and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to charities.

John L. Cox
John L. Cox, of Midland, passed away Friday, July 11, 2003, after a long illness related to a stroke. He was born January 11, 1925, in Burkburnett, to Fred H. and Mary Scott Cox.
Cox is credited with being a major influence in the development of drilling and completion expertise that has made the Spraberry Trend a productive mainstay in the Permian Basin for over half a century. Since 1952, he drilled more than 2,500 wells in West Texas, South Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Wyoming and North Dakota with offices in Midland, Big Lake and Oklahoma City.
A graduate of Junction High School in 1942, Rice University in 1945, and Columbia Midshipman School, he served in the U.S. Navy as an Ensign and after World War II he began his career in the Permian Basin for Stanolind Oil and Gas in Wink. He later became an employee of Ted Weiner in Midland until 1952 and remained active managing his own oil operation until the onset of his illness in 1998. His favorite pastimes were supporting Rice athletic activities and playing golf. He is a past director of the Professional Golfers Association (PGA).
Cox served on the Board of Governors at Rice for a decade and as a trustee from 1982 to 1994. He received the gold medal from the Rice Alumni Association in 1985 and the High Flight Award from the Rice Athletic Department. In 1994, he was awarded both the Distinguished Owl and the Distinguished "R" Person.
He was selected to be the 16th recipient of the Permian Basin Petroleum Association’s Top Hand Award in 1995 and was inducted into the All-American Wildcatters Organization in 1996. In 1998, he was selected honoree of the Permian Basin Oil Show because of his longtime contribution to the oil industry. He served as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Scott and White Foundation.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Maurine Treadwell Cox; two children, Kelly Cox and wife, Lynn, and Carolyn Cox; five grandchildren, Ashley, Danielle and Elizabeth Cox, and Jaden and Derrick Berry; one sister, Freddie Ashby, and one brother James R Cox.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 14, at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jerry Hilton and Dr. Ray Riddle officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home of Midland.
Memorials may be directed to the charity of one's choice.

Terry Wayne McCully
Terry Wayne McCully of Mason passed away on Friday, May 10, at the age of 54.
He was born August 31, 1947, in Fort Worth to Herbert McCully and Thelma Molton McCully. He married Sue McCully on August 9, 1974, and they have lived in Mason for the past 20 years. Terry worked for Super S for the last 16 years and most recently worked as assistant manger at the Junction Super S. He served his country in the Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Terry is survived by his wife, Sue McCully of Mason and two children, Matt McCully and fiancé, April, of San Angelo, and Nikki McCully of Mason. He is also survived by his mother Thelma McCully of Jerome, Idaho, and two brothers; Herbert McCully and wife, Margaret, of Yuma, Arizona, Gene McCully of Haltom City and a half-brother, Gary Sanner of Jerome, Idaho; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Rex and Virginia Beam of Mason, two sisters-in-law, Wanda Connolly of Yuma, Arizona; Denise Walker and husband, Jim, of Alta Loma, California, and three brothers-in-law, Jim Beam and wife, Pat, of Pomona, California, Reall Bean Jr. and wife, Edna, of Daleville, Alabama; and Kevin Beam and wife, Regina, of Salado.
Funeral services for Terry Wayne McCully were held on Tuesday, May 14, at 3 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Mason with Rev. Jim McClain officiating. Burial followed at the Gooch cemetery with military honors.
Serving as pallbearers were Jim Walker, Jim Beam, Reall Beam Jr., Kevin Beam, Jack Roberts, and Reuben Avalos.
Funeral services were under the direction of Mason Funeral Home.

June L. Nixon
June L. Nixon, 75, of Ingram, died May 13, 2002, in Sid Peterson Hospital in Kerrville. Funeral services were Wednesday, May 15, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Augrey Fife Funerals. Burial followed in Junction cemetery.
June was born April 9, 1927, in Waldrip. She was a real estate agent and a member of the Full Gospel Church.
Survivors include an aunt Ethel Doyal of Brownwood, nieces and a nephew and special friend Michael Halley of Ft. Stockton.

Katynell Cunningham Nixon
Katynell Cunningham Nixon, 77, beloved wife, mother and grandmother departed this earth on June 25, 2003, to be with her Lord and Savior.
Mrs. Nixon was born in Cleo, on February 7, 1926, to William S. and Almer Ruth Cunningham who preceded her in death.
Katynell was married to Lee Roy D. Nixon on December 18, 1947. He and one daughter, Laverne, also preceded her in death.
Katynell is survived by two sons, Lee Roy Jr. and James of Junction; one daughter, Linda Walton, and her husband, Howard, of Macon, Georgia; one brother, Bill Cunningham, and one sister, Patsy Patton, both of Junction. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Tammy Kay Deppe, and husband, Terry, James Blair and wife, Christina, and Jason Blair, all of Georgia; three great-grandchildren, Taryn Kay Deppe, Taylor Deppe and Stephanie Blair. Also surviving Katynell are her three step-grandchildren, Bobby, Tommy and Bryan Walton and their spouses; six step great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were at Aubrey Fife Funerals Chapel with interment at Gentry Creek cemetery. Pallbearers were Terry Deppe, Sam Carlisle, Tommy Allsup, Ray Edward Hooker, Tommy Lawler and Bryan Walton.

Rita F. Atherton
Rita F. Atherton, 63, of Belton, passed away Saturday, June 28, 2003, at an assisted living home in Temple.
The daughter of Fred Schwiening, Jr., and Lovella (Tweedle) Schwiening, Mrs. Atherton was born in Junction on September 29, 1939. She retired from Scott and White Hospital as the Assistant Head Nurse in Pediatrics after twenty-five years of service. Scott and White honored Mrs. Atherton a few years ago when they named an award in her honor to be received by an intern each year. It is the Rita Atherton Intern Award.
Funeral services were held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 1, at the Dossman Funeral Home in Belton with Chaplain Judy Hoelscher officiating. Interment icon was at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Junction cemetery with Rev. Jim Barker and Rev. Laurie Barker officiating. Local arrangements were under the direction of Graham Funeral Home.
Mrs. Atherton is survived by her mother, Margaret Evelyn Schwiening of Rowlett; two sons, James W. Atherton of Morgan’s Point Resort and Bryan P. Atherton of Medford, Massachusetts; two brothers, Fred Schwiening III of Midland and James Dewey Schwiening of Conroe; and two grandsons, Michael Atherton and Keven Atherton.
Memorials may be made to the Children’s Miracle Network at Scott and White.

Charles H. Bishop
Mr. Charles H. Bishop passed away Sunday, June 29, in Fredericksburg at the age of 80. Mr. Bishop, formerly of Junction, is survived by his wife, Betty Farmer Bishop of Fredericksburg; one daughter, two sons and their spouses; Enola and Chris Dudley of Angleton, Jerry and Ramona Bishop of Amarillo, Chuck and Debbie Bishop of Temple; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Doris Clark and her husband, Buel, of Menard.
Funeral services for Mr. Charles H. Bishop were held Tuesday, July 1, at 11 a.m., in Memorial Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg, with Rev.’s Karl Schwarz and D.G. McCoury officiating. Interment icon was in Greenwood cemetery.

Harvey E. Ringer
Harvey E. Ringer, 75, of Brady, died July 27, 2003, in San Angelo. Funeral services have been set for Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m. in the Heritage Funeral Home Chapel in Brady with the Rev. Wade Copeland and Gaylon Morris officiating. Burial to follow in Rest Haven cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Heritage Funeral Homes.
Harvey was born June 1, 1928, in Nix, to K.E. and Gorda Lee Palmer Ringer. He married Neta Fay Jones December 30, 1949, in Lometa. He was a Baptist.
Harvey was a rancher and fence builder while working on many ranches in Sonora, Lampasas, Dalhart and Miller, Missouri, before going to work on the Richard Ranch for Carlos Richter in 1960.
He was an outstanding 4-H leader, very active in FFA and other activities in which his children participated in; volunteered for Heart of Texas Rehab Day; loved to hunt and fish, and see after his livestock. He liked the outdoors and his many friends.
Survivors include his wife, Neta, of Brady; one son, Larry Ringer and his wife, Arlene, of Junction; one daughter, Cindy Ringer, of San Angelo; two sisters, Loita Ramsey and Marguerite Ramsey, both of Lampasas; three grandsons, Cody Ringer of Alpine, and Clay and Craig Ringer; one great-grandson; one nephew, Mickey Ramsey, of Georgia; one niece, Mary Yarbrough, of Garland; one sister-in-law, Earline Jones; numerous cousins, a host of friends, and his favorite cat, Whitie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers-in-law, one nephew; and two dear friends, Fred Wulff and Sefernio Medrano.
The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, July 30, from 6-8 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation of North Texas or West Texas Rehab of San Angelo.

Julian Flores
Mr. Julian Flores, 23, of Kerrville, passed away Monday, July 28, 2003, at his residence.
He was born April 29, 1980, in Kerrville to Narciso and Ester (Enriquez) Flores.
Julian was a 1999 graduate of Tivy High School and a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church.
He is survived by his parents, Narciso and Ester Flores; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
The Holy Rosary will be recited Wednesday, July 30, 6 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapel with Deacon Daniel Arriaga officiating.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame Catholic Church with Monsignor Balthasar Janacek as celebrant. Interment icon will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
Julian's cousins will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers. Pallbearers include J.R. Ramon, Johnny Barrera, Tony Ramon, Jesse Aguero, Sylvester Ramon, Richard Trevino, Charles Richard, and Peter James Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers include, Belinda Garcia, Amy Gonzales, Charlene Richard, Monica Barrera, Daniel Barrera, and Gloria Richard.
Funeral arrangements are under the direcrion of Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.
