Pallbearers will be Zachary McAuley, Blake Janes, Bonnie Charping, Jimmy Sommerfield, David Storm, Pat Baily and Mark Bentke. Honorary pallbearers will be Kimberly Ford, her special caregiver and all of the nurses from Texas Home Health of Brenham and Texas Home Health Hospice College Station.
Laverna was born September 15, 1920 to Edward and Frieda (Knueppel) Sommerfield in Ganada, Texas. Laverna was united in marriage to her husband of 70 years, Willie Otto Flentge, on January 31, 1939, in Franklin, LA. She was a devoted housewife to an Army Air Force man in World War II. She was a proud mother of five children, five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. When her children were young she served as their troop leader. She was always there to babysit, help at soccer camps, care for the sick and whatever else was needed. Our family was blessed to have such a strong, compassionate, loving mother. She was a member of the Elizabeth Lutheran Church of Caldwell, the Ladies Auxiliary, VFW Post # 4458, and the Disabled American Veterans.
Laverna along with her husband owned and operated Willie’s Ice House and later opened Willies Café both in Houston, where she was nicknamed Mrs. Willie. She loved skinning the mules for the Thunder Bucket trail rides with her mother beside her in the wagon. In 1966 they bought WL Ranch, a 500 acre farm. She didn’t really care for the country life, so they purchased a home in the city limits of Caldwell. Willie and Laverna loved to travel. When their second grandchild was born they were in Greece, they received a telegram with the news. They also loved taking bus trips to Louisiana to gamble. Laverna loved to play 42 and dominos at the VFW every Tuesday and Friday; not sure, but I bet she just needed the peace and quite time away from Willie. Most of all she treasured the time she shared with her family. She always loved showing off those great grandbabies. She was known as Granny because she said she was too young to be Grandma. Grandma was her Mom. She was a cat and dog lover. She always had a dog sleeping behind her rocker recliner where she spent countless hours crocheting. She was also well known for her American and Texas crochet blankets that she would donate for raffles and benefits. She also made numerous lap blankets and stocking caps for DAV and local nursing homes. She will be missed for countless things, but most of all we miss her cucumber salad and sweet rice. Many have tried but can’t compare to Granny’s.
Laverna is survived by sons and daughter-in-law; Ray Willie Flentge, Jr. of Houston, Charles & Rebecca Flentge of Deanville, Carl Flentge of Caldwell, David Flentge of Caldwell, and daughter; Mary Flentge McAuley of Dripping Springs, grandchildren; Rachel Janes of Hayesville, Elizabeth and Tyler Foerster of New Ulm, Lisa and Casey Redman of Brenham, Zachery McAuley of Austin, Colin and Andrea McAuley of Washington D.C., great-grandchildren; Taylor and Blake Janes, Kolden, Raylee Meger and Westen Foerster, Ava and Emily Redman, sisters-in-law; Rosa Lee Sommerfield, Christina Bentke, Leona Flentge, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, in-laws; Albert and Hattie Flentge, brother; Lilburn Sommerfield, brothers-in-law; Harold Flentge, Edmond Flentge, Albert Flentge, Jr., and Alvin Flentge, nephew; Alvin Lee Flentge, sister-in-law and brother-in-law; Romona and James Bohannon, and brother-in-law; Melvin Bentke.
Laverna would wish for memorials to go to the Connie Animal Clinic, 3901 Hwy 36 North, Brenham, Texas, 77833, or to the DAV VFW Post #4458, Hwy 36, Caldwell, Texas 77836.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Strickland Funeral Home of Caldwell.
