Brigadier General (Retired) Woodrow Free
Brigadier General (Retired) Woodrow Free, age 82, passed away at his home in Brenham on Saturday, July 23, 2016. He is survived by: his wife, Joan Tiaden Free; sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur and Susan Free of Rockdale, Texas, Jody and Diana Free of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and J. Loye and Tana Free of Salado, Texas; grandchildren, Jere Free, Patti and Charles Darby, Erin Free and fiancé Charles Pitarra, Josh Free and fiancé Cassie Dudurich, Tess and Rushil Chugh, Kristi and Matt Allred, Samantha, Kaydee, Cooper, and Kensley Free; great-granddaughter Allison Darby; nephew and wife, Mike and June James; and special family friends, Mark and Tammy Murphy. Funeral services with full military honors for Woodrow Free will be held Wednesday, July 27th at 10 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Brenham. Art Free will officiate. Burial will follow at Prairie Lea Cemetery. If desired, memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church or Hospice Brazos Valley. Annie Mae (Bednar) Pomykal
Annie Mae (Bednar) Pomykal passed away peacefully at home on July 24, 2016. The viewing for Ms. Pomykal will be held at Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham on Wednesday, July 27 from 5 pm- 7 pm. The service will be Thursday, July 28 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Brenham. Interment will follow at the National Cemetery in Nelsonville. Guests are invited back to St. Peter’s for a reception. Mrs. Pomykal is survived by her son, Brice Pomykal and his wife Kalisa; her daughter Aneya Elbert; her grandchildren, Joey, Katy and her husband, Will, Sarah, Allison, Hunter and Kody; her great-grand daughter, Joee; her sister, Barbara Moseley; and numerous nephews and nieces. Mrs. Pomykal is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Frank; her parents Cyril and Johanna Bednar; siblings Della, Raymond and Mary. Funeral arrangements for Annie Mae Pomykal are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, Brenham.

Jim Plummer
Jim Plummer, 60, passed away July 21, 2016 in Brenham. Funeral services are scheduled for 12 noon, Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at 1st United Methodist Church, 408 N. Baylor, Brenham, Tx, with burial to follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, Brenham, TX. Survivors include his twin sister and brother-in-law, Betsy and Bruce Plante of Tulsa, OK.; nephews Jonathan Plante, Ben Plante, and his 8 to 5 wife of over 30 years, Darlene Boecker. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, John Cantrell Plummer. Funeral arrangements for Jim Plummer are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main.

Howard Harden
Howard Hardan, 68, passed away at his home in Brenham on July 15, 2016. Howard is survived by: his sister, Sue McMahon and husband Paul; brother, Herbert Hardan; brother, Roy Hardan and wife Bobbi; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great nephews; and special cousin L.W. Miller. Visitation will be at Brenham Memorial Chapel from 6 – 8 p.m., Tuesday, July 19, 2016. Funeral services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church of Zionsville at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 20, 2016. Pastor Pat Lehrer will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael McMahon, Jonathon Hardan, Steven McMahon, Curtis Meyer, Alex Escorcia, and Nathan Carroll. Honorary pallbearers are former employees of Bothe Ford, Don Koester, and Billie Morgan. If desired, memorial donations may be sent to Zion Lutheran Church, 1800 F.M. 2679, Brenham, TX 77833. Shoshana (Shoshy) Norma Warner
Shoshana (Shoshy) Norma Warner, infant daughter of David, Jr. and Bailey Warner, passed from the deep, loving embrace of her mothers’ arms into the devoted arms of her Heavenly Father on Saturday, July 9, 2016. Loving family includes: her parents; big brother, Elijah Timothy Warner; maternal grandparents, Timothy and Holly Clemons; paternal grandparents, David and Wendy Warner; maternal great-grandparents, Kenneth and Carol Milder, Dianne Clemons; paternal great-grandparents, Doris Koerth, Billy Dean Koerth and Theresa Bilski, Norma Warner; maternal uncles, Jacob and Trace Clemons; paternal aunt, Rachel Warner and special friend Cullen Jozwiak; numerous great uncles and great aunts. Visitation with the Warner family will be Wednesday, July 13th from 5-7 p.m. at Brenham Memorial Chapel. Funeral services for Shoshana Warner will be held Thursday, July 14th at 10 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Greenvine with Pastor Mark Moore officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Everyone is welcome to wear pink in honor of Shoshana’s beautiful spirit. Arno Adolph Kautz
Arno Adolph Kautz, 83, of Frelsburg, TX passed away on July 6, 2016 following a brief illness. Arno was a farmer, rancher and gardener. He enjoyed listening to Polka Time and The County Store. He also enjoyed his weekly conversations with his sister and visitations with cousin, Nelcine Krebs. Arno like to spend time with friends and family. He would also look forward to attending local community feasts. Arno retired after working many years at H-E-B in Brenham where he enjoyed working with everyone and made many friends. He was highly appreciative of his nieces and nurses, Darlene Reeves, Donna Prater and Diana Bell and nephew, Charles Stork and their families for their daily care during his illness. He is survived by sister, Doris Bruedigan, of Brenham; sister and brother-in-law, Verlin and Howard Kruse, of Brenham; brother-in-law, Emmett Stork, of Adkins; nephews and nieces: Ricky Boeker and wife, Virginia, Mark Boeker and wife, Lynn; Brian Boeker and wife, Holly; Diane Kettler and husband, Clinton; Kathryn Boyd; Jim Kruse and wife, Hailey; David Kruse all of Brenham; Charles Stork and wife, Candy, of La Vernia; Darlene Reeves and husband, Dan; Donna Prater and husband, Michael, all of Adkins; Diana Bell and husband, Allen, of Midland; and numerous great-nieces, great nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 8, from 10:00am - 7:00pm at Koenig & Strickland Zaskoda Chapel in Industry, family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00pm. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church of Frelsburg at 2:00pm on Saturday, July 9, 2016. Interment will follow at the Trinity Lutheran Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church of Frelsburg. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Koenig & Strickland Funeral Home in La Grange, TX.

Viola F. Giese
Viola F. Giese, 97, widow of Marvin Giese, passed away July 2, 2016 in Brenham. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, July 10, 2016 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Pastor Phil Fenton officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery. The Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law James and Dorothy Giese of College Station; Charles and Deanna Giese, and Wayne and Claudia Giese, all of Brenham; grandchildren: Leah and Lee McCabe, Vanessa and Donald Schwab, Sheridan and Jeff Slocumb, Erin C. Giese, Lance and Shannon Giese, Troy and Stephanie Giese, Todd Giese, Laton and Jane Anne Giese, and Eric Wayne Giese; great-grandchildren: Kaylee McCabe, Kassidy McCabe, Kai Giese, Kade Giese, Lydia Giese, Lincoln Giese, Samantha, Savannah, and Sierra Schwab, Tyler Giese, and Jeremy Slocumb. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Viola was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin Giese; son, Marvin Eugene Giese; brothers Alvin, V.C., and Fred, and sisters Tillie, Elda, Esther, and Lillie. Calvin Adolph Lehde
Calvin Adolph Lehde, 90, of Brenham, passed away and went home to the Lord on Saturday, July 2, 2016, at Brenham Nursing and Rehab Center. Visitation with the Lehde family will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 5 at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Funeral services for Calvin Lehde will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 6 at Zion Lutheran Church of Zionsville with Pastor Pat Lehrer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Veradell Lehde of Brenham; daughters and sons-in-law, Dinah and Allan Niemeyer and Jane and Jonathan Little, all of Brenham; son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Linda Lehde of Sealy; grandchildren, Warren and Jacy Niemeyer, Myles Niemeyer and friend Ashley, Truitt and Paige Niemeyer, Dyan Knapp, Angela Knapp and friend Michael, LeaAndrea and Eric Otto, Landon Lehde and friend Kaylee, and Justin, Patrick, Jonathan and Leslie Little and friend Matthew; great-grandchildren, Alexander, Gunther, Carmen, Adrie, Lorelai, Haylie, Gavin, Raife and Colt Niemeyer and Kyler Giles; sister, Bertha Lee Kolby of Navasota; sister-in-law, Dorothy Eberhardt of Burton; brother-in-law, Raymond Blum of Brenham; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Doris (Schwartz) Drews
Doris (Schwartz) Drews, 73, widow of Fritz Drews, Jr., died June 24, 2016 in College Station. Funeral services are scheduled for 10am, Saturday, July 2nd, at Memorial Oaks Chapel, with Minister Jason Drews officiating. Burial will follow in Prairie Lea Cemetery.Visitation will take place Friday, July 1st, from 6:00 - 8:00pm at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Survivors include her son, Jason Drews; brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Barbara Schwartz; sister and brother-in-law, Artie and Carlton Klussmann, all of Brenham. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, and an infant daughter, Stacey Drews. Funeral arrangements for Doris Drews are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 West Main, Brenham.

Alma Sue Bentke Place
Alma Place, grandma to everyone, passed away on June 27, 2016 in Groveton, Texas. Mrs. Place was born in Independence, Texas on August 1, 1919, the oldest of ten children, born into a cotton farmer family. Because of her upbringing, she had an iron clad will thru her long fruitful life. School and God were very important to her. In high school, she was the valedictorian of her class and was very proud to have one of her poems published in Who’s Who in Poetry in America. The poem was “America Is Calling”. Alma met the love of her life, Bernarr F. Place and they were married on February 5, 1955 and together they had three daughters that they were very proud of. Bernarr was a proud U.S. Air Force retiree and their family had frequently moved where he was needed. Due to this, the family was extremely loving and close. After retirement, the family moved to Bryan to their beloved Texas A&M University. Alma moved to Marquez in 1985, after Bernarr passed away and spent her last five years in Groveton.
Grandma left behind to cherish her memory: daughters: Delinda Bass and husband Frank of Groveton, Connie Watson Place of Marquez, Mary Derkowski and husband Bill of Bryan; grandchildren: Donny Akers and wife Stacey, Jennifer Townsend and husband Jeremy, Frank Bass Jr. and wife Melanie, Jason Huckaby and wife Shellia, Lance Watson and wife Jennifer, Ryan Derkowski and wife Crystal; Eleven great-grandchildren: Brayden, Madelyn, Logan, Haygen, Bailey, Blake, Eli, Matt, Corbin, Keeley, and Bradley; sister: Mary Jo Schulz and husband Ervin; brother: Raymond and wife Verna Mae Bentke; sisters-in law: Donna Bentke, Rosie Bentke, and Dorothy Bentke; also, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and loving friends.
Alma was preceded in death by her dear husband Bernarr F. Place, her parents Herman Sr. and Emma Bentke; brothers: Alfred, Melvin, Bill, Herman Jr., and Glenn Bentke; sisters-in-laws: Christine and Georgia Mae Bentke; sister: Ida Kaechler and Lois Ruemke; brothers-in-law: Johnny Kaechler and Fred Ruemke; nieces: Vicki Kaechler Hertel, and Shelby Bentke; nephew: Robert Walker.
Life Celebration will be held on 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2016 at Hillier Funeral Home of Bryan. Family and friends will be gathering for the graveside services at 1:00 p.m. at Prairie Lea Cemetery in Brenham. Visitation will be held on Thursday night from 6:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. at Hillier Funeral Home of Bryan.

Ardell "Buddy" Daris Muske
Ardell “Buddy” Daris Muske, 85, husband of Nadine Muske, passed away June 22, 2016 in Brenham. The funeral service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 25, 2016 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Pastor Phil Fenton officiating. Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Oaks Chapel. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Nadine Muske of Brenham; son and daughter-in-law Bradley and Shana Muske of Burton; daughter and son-in-law, Marisa and David Lopez, Jr. of Highland Village; grandchildren: Cody Muske and wife Samantha, Kaylena Lopez, and Nicole Lopez. He was preceded in death by one brother. Funeral arrangements for Ardell Daris Muske are entrusted to Memorial Oaks Chapel, 1306 W. Main, Brenham.

Elizabeth Lampe Prieto
Elizabeth Lampe Prieto passed away on June 19, 2016. Elizabeth is the wife of Isabel Prieto for 31 years and the daughter of Willie & Marion Lampe. The family will receive family and friends Friday, June 24th, at the Prairie Hill Church Hall in Brenham, starting at 6:00pm. There will be no viewing or funeral service.

Julia (Jozwiak) Derkowski
Julia (Jozwiak) Derkowski, 87 of Chappell Hill, Texas and the widow of Albin Derkowski, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2016, after battling Alzheimer’s disease. Mrs. Derkowski is survived by: her son, Paul Derkowski and wife Theresa; her daughter, Donna Kraft; and three grandchildren, Brian Derkowski and wife Sarah, Philip Derkowski and wife Bonnie, and Tiffany Che Kraft; five great-grandchildren, Sheldon Derkowski, Benjamin Derkowski, Emily Derkowski, Katherine Derkowski, and Andrew Derkowski; and by niece, nephews, and cousins. The immediate family will have a private Rosary service led by the grandchildren and the great-grandchildren. Visitation with the Derkowski family and friends will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21 at Brenham Memorial Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial for Julia (Jozwiak) Derkowski will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church of Chappell Hill with Rev. Jozef Musiol, SDS JCD officiating. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a memorial donation be made to St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Chappell Hill, Texas or to Houston Hospice at www.houstonhospice.org. Services are in the care of Brenham Memorial Chapel, 2300 Stringer St., Brenham, Texas, 77833. 979.836.3611
