Marie F. Ohad

Marie F. Ohad completed a ninety-three year life journey on March 19, 2011. She was a remarkable person; unassuming and gracious, gentle and kind, energetic and a lover of nature. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Marie was born on December 1, 1917 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin to Guy and Katherine Sperbeck. She was the youngest of three children. Because of unfortunate circumstances the early years of her life were spent in foster care. At the age of fifteen she ventured forth to independence. She worked as a nanny and waitress. A few years later she met and married Shad Ohad. They shared a deep and heartfelt love for sixty-six years, until Shad's death on July 28, 2003.

In 1943 Shad and Marie, with their then three children, moved to Yakima where Shad went to work in the printing business and Marie established a household and gave birth to another child. Marie was the epitome of the 40's and 50's homemaker; busy from dawn to dusk with laundry, meal preparation, cleaning, ironing, nursing ill children, balancing the household budget, etc. She did it all while she cared for her four children as well as foster children who she loved dearly.

When other families were confronted with tragedies or emergencies Marie, always the caring one, was there for them, preparing meals, caring for their children, and doing everything possible to help them through difficult times.

She was full of vitality and loved long walks and hiking. Marie frequently found joy in going on eight to ten mile walks to downtown Yakima to shop or have lunch with a friend. If an acquaintance were to pull up and offer her a ride she would politely refuse and smilingly continue enjoying her walk. She loved hiking in the woods. With a sturdy walking stick she would set out, solo, for the better part of a day and return with a full load of wild berries.

Prior to Shad's retirement he and Marie built a home near Packwood, Washington. It was in that mountain paradise that they enjoyed some of the best years of their lives, making a multitude of friends, and enjoying visits from their children and grandchildren who loved going to see them. It was there that Marie had unlimited trails to hike and forests to explore. She became the area's legendary berry hunter. Her blackberry and huckleberry preserves became favorites of the community, and were looked upon as favored gifts during the holidays. When visiting, her grandsons reveled in the taste of the huckleberry pancakes she prepared for them.

Because of health issues Shad and Marie later found it necessary to sell their mountain home and return to Yakima. However, they found themselves still in need of a divergence, so they created a senior citizens travel service; rented a tour bus and driver, made group resort, motel, and dining reservations and offered economical tour packages to seniors. These excursions became very popular, were sold by word of mouth, and typically sold out two or three months in advance. Marie was a very popular tour hostess on these trips, and she and Shad found them to be modestly rewarding and extremely fun.

Marie loved people and never spoke negatively of others. She also loved animals. She truly enjoyed going to the Yakima Farmers Market and admiring the dogs. She was constantly asking pet owners for permission to pet their dog. While living in the mountains chipmunks were known to crawl onto her lap and nibble nuts, and even an occasional deer fawn would approach to nibble a snack.

After Shad's death Marie's later years were spent in residence at The Living Care facility on Summitview Avenue. There she made a number of new and caring friends, none more important to her than her loving companion Herman Westhoff.

We would also like to give special recognition to Marie's good friend Chris Vining French - a better friend could not be had, and the caring people of Memorial Hospital Hospice.

Marie is survived by her son David Ohad of Kennewick, Wa., daughters Marie Finley of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Diane Flick of Clackamas, Or., as well as a multitude of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, all of whom loved her and will miss her dearly.

Services will be held at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Yakima, Washington on Friday, March 25 at 1:00 p.m. At Marie Ohad's request, services will include the immediate family only. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Memorial Hospital Hospice.

Diane's favorite activities included caring for her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also loved helping others in need. She loved to organize car shows and show her own classic car and was also involved in gardening and caring for her flowers.

Melavee Jamison

YAKIMA - Melavee "Mimi" Josephine Jamison, 82, passed away March 17th, 2011, at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital in the company of her loving daughters and their families.

Melavee was born August 4, 1928, in Urbanette, Arkansas, to Rena and Lonnie Jones. Her family moved shortly thereafter from Arkansas to California, then to Enumclaw, WA in 1942, before settling in Grandview, WA in 1944.

There she met the man who would become the love of her life, Jack Jamison. Three short years later, after Jack returned from World War II, they married on January 20, 1947.

Early in marriage Mel worked in the Grandview movie theatre, and later as a bookkeeper for R. H. Smith Distributing.

She relished time with her family, and loved anything and everything her daughters and grandchildren were involved in. Mel and her husband Jack attended nearly every sporting event their grandchildren played in while growing up; a statement of amusement to some, amazement to others, but one of love most of all.

Mimi was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and she was very much looking forward to being a first-time great-grandmother in April, then a second time later in August of this year. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.

Melavee is survived by her daughter Debbie Hinckley and her husband Chuck, her daughter Sabrena Carey and her husband Mike, her granddaughters Haley Carey and Lindsey Schield, Lindsey's husband Scott, and grandsons Chad Carey and Tyler Hinckley, and Tyler's wife Katie.

Mel was predeceased by her husband, Jack Jamison, who passed away March 11, 2009.

Melavee's family would like to thank all of the employees at Arlington House who helped and cared for her during her final years, as well as the fine employees in Memorial Hospital's W-3 staff who looked after her in her final days.

Mel's love of life and her love for her family will be greatly missed. Her infectious laughter and that special twinkle in her eye will always be remembered.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made in Melavee's name to the American Heart Association.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 26th at 11a.m. at the Valley Hills Funeral Home in Yakima.
