Horace "Bub" Collins

Horace “Bub” Collins, age 75, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, August 27, 2002 at the St. Clare Hospital of Baraboo, Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 30, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells, with Reverend Craig Wolfgram officiating. Burial will be at Big Spring Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Harold B. Larkin American Legion Post 187 of Wisconsin Dells.

Bub was born April 23, 1927 in Camp Douglas, Wisconsin, the son of Gerald and Marvel (White) Collins. He joined two sisters and a brother. In 1931 the family moved to Elroy, Wisconsin, where he attended Grade and High School. He graduated from Elroy High School in 1945. During World War 2 he served his country in the U.S. Army as drum major for the 88th Infantry Division Band and leader of a USO dance band. Music was one of Bub’s greatest joys. Throughout his life he played with various combos and big bands including the Vagabonds, the Jack Kucher Band and the Hal Edwards Orchestra. He worked as an independent carpenter in the Elroy, Hillsboro, Wonewoc, Mauston and Adams area for many years building and remodeling homes. His family and friends will cherish the memories of his impressive musical talent, his unique sense of humor and his creative ability to build and fix things. Bub was a member of the American Legion, serving as both Post and County Commander. He had resided with his wife Eleanor in the Wisconsin Dells, area for the past 30 years. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells.

Bub is survived by his wife, Eleanor; two sons, William (Jayne) of LaFarge, Wisconsin, and Robert of Madison, Wisconsin; four daughters, Carla (Phil) Salamone of Wausau, Wisconsin, Barbara Collins-Gunderson of Redwing, Minnesota, Laura Collins of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Mary (Mark) Johnsrud of Richland Center, Wisconsin; his children's mother, Jean (Neuman) Collins; nineteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and many loving friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Carol and husband Robert Mason and Ruby and husband Lyle Baltz and a brother, Douglas (Martha) Collins.

Visitation will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church on Friday from 9 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M.

In lieu of flowers memorials to the family are suggested.

John "Jose" Vanderveer

John D. “Jose” Vanderveer, age 83, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, died Thursday, August 22, 2002 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 27, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at the Picha Funeral Home in Lake Delton, Wisconsin, with Reverend Steven Keller officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Harold B. Larkin American Legion Post 187 of Wisconsin Dells. John will be cremated following the traditional services and interred at Spring Grove Cemetery of Wisconsin Dells.

John was born February 27, 1919 in Baraboo, Wisconsin, the son of John and Laveta (Von Wald) Vanderveer. He graduated from high school in Adams Friendship and was very active in sports being the captain of his football and basketball teams. Following high school, he attended the University of Wisconsin Madison and eventually enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and retired after 30 years achieving the rank of Major. While in the military, he also attended Yale University. Following retirement, he moved to the Dells where he stayed busy tending bar at the Sand Bar and nurturing his beloved garden. He cherished his friendships and looked forward to Friday fish fries.

John is survived by a son, David (Judy) Vanderveer of Santa Fe, New Mexico; grandsons, John V. Vanderveer of Portland, Oregon and Quinton Vanderveer of Santa Fe; a granddaughter, Angela Vanderveer of Wisconsin Dells; nephews, Turk (Judy) Waterman and Jack (Mary) Waterman both of Wisconsin Dells, James (Nancy) Gruhl of Arizona, Fred (Iris) Gruhl of Michigan and Ed (Mary) Gruhl of Wisconsin; and a longtime family friend, Scott Smith of Wisconsin Dells. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John K. Vanderveer; and sisters, Helen Gruhl and Mae Waterman.

Visitation will be held at Picha Funeral Home on Monday, August 26, 2002 from 5 to 8 P.M. and on Tuesday from 10 A.M. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in care of the Meals on Wheels.

Julius Mattei

Julius Mattei, age 73, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, died Monday, August 12, 2002 at St. Mary's Care Center in Madison, Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 16, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. at the Picha Funeral Home in Lake Delton, Wisconsin, with Reverend Dave Bauman and Robert Stearns co-officiating. Burial will be at Spring Grove Cemetery in Wisconsin Dells.

Julius was born September 27, 1928 in Pence, Wisconsin, the son of Jerome and Pauline (Alfonsi) Mattei. In December of 1962, he married Carol Wiese in Hurley, Wisconsin.

Julius is survived by his wife Carol; brothers, Noel (Jean Ann) and Jim (Barb), both of Wisconsin Dells, Frank (Irene) of San Francisco, California and Phillip of Kenosha, Wisconsin; a sister, Angeline (Sam) Sartori of New Carrollton, Maryland, and an aunt, Marie Johnson of Wisconsin Dells. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be held at Picha Funeral Home on Thursday from 5 to 7 P.M. and on Friday from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service at 10:30 A.M.

Aaron Anchor

Aaron Anchor, age 64, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, died Sunday, August 11, 2002 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, August 15, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Wisconsin Dells, with Father Felix Oehrlein officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Wisconsin Dells. Military rites will be provided by the Harold B. Larkin American Legion Post 187 of Wisconsin Dells.

Aaron was born September 2, 1937 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Stacy and Agnes ( Anderson ) Anchor. He attended the University of Whitewater and was in the U.S. Army. In May of 1964 he married Carol Curtin at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church and this marriage was blessed with 4 children. He has worked for many years for Marshall Erdman and Associates in Waunakee, Wisconsin, and retired in December of 2000. Aaron was also a member of the Kilbourn Fire Department and the Wisconsin Dells Lions Club.

Aaron is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Dan (Tara) of Wisconsin Dells; daughters, Krista (Bret) Borowski of Brookfield, Wisconsin, Laurie (Todd) Kriese of Appleton, Wisconsin, and Julie (Sean) McCormick of Waukesha, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Sara, Kari, Luke, Riley and Dylan; brothers, Jack of Wisconsin Dells, and Bill of Oak Creek, Wisconsin; sisters, Carolyn (Clyde) Moon and Bonnie (Arlan) Hudzinski both of Baraboo, Wisconsin; and a sister-in-law, Katie (Tom) Travers of Lake Mills, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Melanoma Research Foundation.

Visitation will be held at the Picha Funeral Home of Lake Delton, Wisconsin on Wednesday, August 14, 2002 from 4 to 8 P.M.

Mae Hecock

Mae Hecock, age 94, formerly of Big Spring, Wisconsin, died Saturday, August 10, 2002 at the Wisconsin Dells Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at the Big Spring Congregational Church in Big Spring, with Reverend David Rabuck officiating. Burial will be at the Big Spring Cemetery.

Mae was born June 29, 1908 in Adams County, Wisconsin, the daughter of James and Nina (Mason) Henderson. In July of 1928 she married Ralph Hecock. He preceded her in death in 1968. Mae had been a member of Royal Neighbors of America.

Mae is survived by her daughters, Norma (Earl) Sigafus and Nina (Joseph) Baker both of Reedsburg, Wisconsin, and Ramona (Al) LaNeve of Archbold, Ohio; a brother, Donald Henderson, Sr. of Wisconsin Dells; 9 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandson, Tom Hartman; a granddaughter, Norma Molle and a sister-in-law, Marion Henderson.

Visitation will be held at Big Spring Congregational Church on Wednesday from 10 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M.

The Picha Funeral Home and Crematory of Lake Delton, Wisconsin assisted the family with arrangements.

Dolores Sigmund

Dolores Sigmund, age 78, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at her home with her family by her side on Tuesday, August 6, 2002.

Memorial funeral services will be held Saturday, August 10, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Briggsville, Wisconsin, with Father John Hedrick and Father Felix Oehrlein co-officiating. According to her wishes, Dolores was cremated.

Dolores was born June 24, 1924 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, the daughter of Anton and Catherine (Bodewin) Gengler and the youngest of seven children. Dolores married her childhood sweetheart, Edward A. Sigmund in South Mills, North Carolina, on June 11, 1943. This marriage was blessed with five sons and two daughters. She was active in her church, the Friends of the Library, and with her husband helped to transport people to the train station or bus depot when they stayed at Mary House while visiting with relatives who were imprisoned.

Dolores is survived by her husband, Edward; sons, Edward R. (Barbara) of Wisconsin Dells, Jeffrey W. (JoEllen) of Evansville, Wisconsin, and Troy D. (Jill Whaples) of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin; daughters, Mary (David) Kopas of Moyie Springs, Idaho, and Christine (Roger) Kutz of Whitewater, Wisconsin; daughter-in-law, Marge Sigmund of Cinnaminson, New Jersey; brothers, Anthony (Theresa) Gengler and Matthew (Lorraine) Gengler both of Medford, Wisconsin, and Eugene Gengler of West Bend, Wisconsin; sisters, Catherine Brown of Crofton, Maryland, Theresa Zeman of Baraboo, Wisconsin, and Isabel Sigmund of Medford; 22 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sons, Lawrence and Gregory.

Visitation will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Briggsville, on Saturday from 10 A.M. until the time of service at 11 A.M. Memorials of remembrance may be given to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, St. Mary Help of Christians or to the charity of choice.

The Picha Funeral Home and Crematory of Lake Delton, Wisconsin, assisted the family with arrangements.

Richard Luke

Richard Luke, age 43, of Reedsburg, Wisconsin, died Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at the Sauk County Health Care Center where he has been a resident for the past 27 years following an automobile accident when he was 17.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 22, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. at the Dells Delton United Methodist Church in Wisconsin Dells with Reverend Steven A. Miller officiating. Burial will be at the Lake Delton Village Cemetery.

Richard was born June 19, 1959 in Baraboo, Wisconsin, the son of Roy and Phyllis (Bartels) Luke. He attended the Wisconsin Dells High School and enjoyed sports and hunting. Following his accident he was semi comatose and he fought a tremendous battle with all the related and numerous complications.

Richard is survived by his father, Roy Luke; a half brother, Gary (Leah) Luke of Mauston, Wisconsin; step nieces, Eliana and Lauryn; special aunt and uncle, Tom (Joanne) Luke of Lake Delton, and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother; grandparents and an aunt, Donna Graham.

Visitation will be held at Dells Delton United Methodist Church on Friday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M.

Special thank you to the staff and “extended family” at the Sauk County Health Care Center that helped care for Richard.
