Duane Vanderbilt

Duane Vanderbilt, age 86, of Oxford, Wisconsin, passed into Eternity to be with his Lord and Savior on the evening of Wednesday, November 5, 2008 with his loving family by his side.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 10, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at the Oxford Bible Church in Oxford, with Reverend David Jones officiating. Burial will be at the Oxford Village Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Oxford Funeral Home on Sunday, November 9, 2008 from 4 to 7 P.M. and on Monday at the church from 10 A.M. until the time of service at 11 A.M.

Duane was born April 20, 1922 in New Haven Township, Adams County, Wisconsin, the son of Floyd and Cora (Thayer) Vanderbilt. He dedicated his life to the Lord in all he did as a father with his family, as well as ministering in the church in many areas. He enjoyed visiting and ministering to people.

Duane served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. On January 1, 1944 he married Persis Herrick at the family homestead. In 1959 the family moved to California, where he was a truck driver. In 1979 they retired back to Oxford. With his wife Persis, they enjoyed going to Arizona, and California, during the winters.

Duane is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Persis; a daughter, Donna (James) Filiatrault of Montello, Wisconsin; four sons, Stephen (Kazuko) of Japan, David (Jennifer) of North Carolina, James (Jean) of California, and Philip (Kathy) of Arizona. He is further survived by 10 grandchildren, Timothy and Daniel Filiatrault, Rachel, Michelle and Joshua, Joel, Nancy, Steve, Leslie and Philip, Jr.; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Eugene of Illinois, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Doris Naber; brother, Dale; and a granddaughter, Carlone.

Devin Szczesniak

Devin Szczesniak, infant son of Joseph and Kristy (Grant) Szczesniak of Oxford, Wisconsin, was stillborn Saturday, December 6, 2008 at Divine Savior Hospital in Portage, Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 12:00 Noon at the Oxford Presbyterian Church in Oxford, with Reverend Robert and Reverend Dr. Mary Jo Bruinooge officiating. Visitation will be held at the Oxford Presbyterian Church on Thursday from 11 A.M. until the time of service at 12:00 Noon. Cremation will follow the traditional services.

Devin will be missed dearly by his parents, Joseph and Kristy; a brother, Travis; a sister, Destiny; maternal grandparents, Larry and Donna Grant of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin; paternal grandparents, Leela and Larry Brink of Greenwood, Wisconsin; maternal great-grandmother, Dorothy Grant of Oxford; paternal great-grandfather, Lester Meiller of Mauston, Wisconsin; and aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives. He was preceded in death by paternal grandmother, Kasmira Szczesniak, maternal great-grandfather, Lawrence Grant and paternal great-grandmother, Connie Meiller.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the church.

Gordon "Skip" Gerbitz

Gordon “Skip” Milton Gerbitz, age 83, of Briggsville, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his own home on Monday, December 22, 2008.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 3, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oxford, with Reverend Brian Rohde officiating. Please join the family for a time of fellowship and a luncheon following the service at the church.

Gordon was born December 1, 1925 in New Haven Township of Adams County, Wisconsin, the son of Edward and Emma (Labrenz) Gerbitz. In July of 1949 he married Delores Steuerwald in Portage, Wisconsin. Over his 59 years of farming, Gordon was involved in many activities; Pork Producers, on the State Pork Producer’s Insurance Committee for 1 year; Farmer’s Home Administration board for 3 years; Douglas Doers 4-H Club including the duty of softball coach for 10 years and pork production leader for 12 years; International Crane Foundation; Central Livestock Show swine committee for 20 years; Marquette County Fair; Neenah Valley Saddle Club; fire warden for 19 years; St. John’s Lutheran Church building committee for 5 years and membership committee for 3 years; family card playing; monthly 500 card club; Wednesday night poker at neighbor’s houses for 20 years; weekly men’s bowling team and couple’s league; Jolly Squares square-dancing and going to auctions.

Gordon was in tune with the land, had a love of nature, blending agriculture with preservation of wildlife. He used innovative farming practices, especially in using his own designs for his farrow to finish hog operation. Gordon’s dream of making his farm a 3 generation farm will be carried on by his grandson. He loved riding his 4 wheeler over the farm and woods and watched generations of vultures hatch in a tree in the woods. He gave access to his land for goose, turkey and deer hunting and participated eagerly in the hunt himself. He also enjoyed sightseeing traveling with his family. Gordon has the respect and friendship of family and neighbors. His humor, good-natured friendliness and generosity will be missed by all.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 59 years, Delores Ada (Steuerwald); daughters, Sandra Rowe of Briggsville, Susan (Bill Johnston) of Billings, MT, Sally (David Ashline) of Moreno Valley, CA; a son, Gerald (Eva Foster), of Briggsville; grandchildren, Dennis Gerbitz and Denise Soule, Jeremy Johnston (Vanessa) and Josh Johnston, Christopher Rowe (Mary) and Sonya Rowe and Andrew Ashline; great-grandson, Dillan Soule; brothers, Raymond (Phyllis) and Alfred (Lorena) and sister Lucille (Darrell) Trapp. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Scott Ashline; parents, Edward and Emma; brother, Willard; sisters, Evelyn Ribaudo, Arlene Luger and Eleanor.

Memorials may be given to Home Health United Hospice or the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Dorothy E. Grant

Dorothy E. Grant, age 94, of rural Oxford, Wisconsin, died Sunday, January 4, 2009 at the Divine Savior Extended Care in Portage, Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. at the Oxford Presbyterian Church in Oxford with Rev. Robert & Rev. Dr. Mary Jo Bruinooge officiating. Burial will be at the Oxford Village Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Oxford Presbyterian Church on Saturday from 11 A.M. until the time of service at 1:00 P.M.

Dorothy was born November 11, 1914 in Montello, Wisconsin, the daughter of Otto and Pauline (Kluth) Klimke. She graduated from the Sunny Flats rural school and worked as a domestic for several families and later worked as a cook and waitress at restaurants. In July of 1949 she married Lawrence Grant in Coloma, Wisconsin, and they farmed together for many years and later in the 1980’s they owned and operated Grant’s Gas Station at the intersection of Highway 82 and I-39. In her younger years Dorothy enjoyed going to barn dances and her favorite pastimes were listening to Lawrence Welk music, gardening, baking and tending to her pet cats.

Dorothy is survived by a son, Larry (Donna) Grant of Wisconsin Dells; a daughter, Sharon Grant of Madison, Wisconsin; a brother, Eldon (Wilma) Klimke of Oxford; a sister-in-law, Hilda Klimke of Mequon, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Scott Grant, Craig (Michelle) Grant, Kristy (Joe) Szczesniak; step grandchildren, Michael Potter, Jamie (Andrew) Putz, Samantha Potter, Bradley Schmitz and Joshua Schmitz; great-grandchildren, Destiny Szczesniak, Gavin Grant; step great-grandchildren, Conner Putz, Travis Szczesniak and Zachary Peterson; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; twin infant sons, Donald and David; brothers, Herbert, Alfred, Chester, and Harold Klimke and Fritz Getchel; sisters, Elsie Niklaus, Ethel Henke and Hilda Lashock and a great-grandson, Devin Szczesniak.

Mary Kane

Mary Louise Kane, age 70, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, died Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo, Wisconsin, with her loving family by her side following a courageous battle with lung cancer.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Wisconsin Dells, with Father Eugene "Bud" Hollfelder celebrating. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Wisconsin Dells. Visitation will be held at the Picha Funeral Home, the former Fedderly-Axtell Funeral Home, in Wisconsin Dells, on Friday, January 9, 2009 from 3 to 8 P.M. with the rosary and vigil service held at 6 P.M. and on Saturday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service at 10:30 A.M.

Mary was born December 1, 1938 in Portage, Wisconsin, the daughter of Marcel and Doris (Vanderbilt) Naber. She graduated from Wisconsin Dells High School in 1957 and continued her education at Madison Area Technical College for secretarial and key punch operation. In September of 1961 she married Robert Arthur Kane in Wisconsin Dells. For many years she worked as a bookkeeper for Bork and Kane Drug Store and later for K & S Builders. Mary was the chairperson for 40 years of the Wisconsin Dells Election Board which she served with deep commitment; enjoyed teaching and playing volleyball; was an excellent cook and enjoyed sharing her cooking with others; enjoyed visiting the casino with her friends; and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her beloved husband of 47 years, Robert; a son, Michael (Melissa) Kane of Wisconsin Dells; daughters, Kay (Pat) Cheever of Oshkosh, Wisconsin and Kim (Lamothe) Paul Lormier of Satellite Beach, Florida; a brother, Robert (Arlene) Naber of Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Jessica, Kelsey, Luci, Luca and Will; and a great-grandchild, Nolan. She was preceded in death by her parents and a newborn child.

Memorials of remembrance may be given to the Mary Kane Lewiston School Memorial because of her love of children.

Zachary Olson

Zachary “Zach” Olson, age 24, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2009 at University Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 11:30 A.M. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells with Reverend Craig Wolfgram officiating. Visitation will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church on Wednesday from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service at 11:30 A.M.

Zach was born February 18, 1984 in Woodruff, Wisconsin, the son of Jan Olson. He traveled with his military mom and attended schools in Frankfurt, Germany; Saco, Maine; Ft. Hood, Texas and Baumholder, Germany, before moving to Wisconsin Dells in the 6th grade. Zach graduated from Wisconsin Dells High School in 2003. He worked as a cook at Famous Dave’s in Wisconsin Dells since 2000. He loved collecting Magic cards and playing video games especially “World of Warcraft”. Zach also had a fascination with swords and had a small collection.

Zach is survived by his mother, Jan Olson of Wisconsin Dells; aunts, Suzanne (Kurt) Luedtke of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, Sally (Leroy) Gilson of Winneconne, Wisconsin, and Ann (Daniel) Pupp of Baraboo, Wisconsin; uncle, Jayme Olson of Woodruff, Wisconsin; step sister, Joyce Vallejo of Chicago, Illinois and numerous cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bayward “Chink” and Rosemary “Rosie” Olson.

Gwen Storandt

Gwen Storandt, age 86, of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, died Thursday, January 29, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Wisconsin Dells.

A time of visitation will be held Sunday, February 1, 2009 from 1:30 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. at the Picha Funeral Home (the former Fedderly Axtell Funeral Home) in Wisconsin Dells.

Gwen was born January 10, 1923 in Caledonia Township, Columbia County, Wisconsin, to David and Evalyn (Cameron) Roberts. She attended Fox Glen Grade School and graduated from Portage High School with the Class of 1940. She was a bookkeeper at the Hyland Garage until marrying Harold Storandt on October 10, 1946. To this union were born three children: Roberta, Robert and Thomas. Gwen worked in later years in Wisconsin Dells as a bookkeeper for Greenwood Motor Sales and Gene Morse Chevrolet. She had been a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Wisconsin Dells.

Gwen is survived by her sons, Robert (Marilyn) of LaValle, Wisconsin and Thomas (Shirley) of Wisconsin Dells; a grandson, Kevin (Brandy) of Baraboo, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Marie Roberts of Pardeeville, Wisconsin and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Roberta in 1960; husband, Harold in 1975; parents; a sister, Jeanette Roberts Beich and brother, David Roberts.
