LeRoy Frederick Miller
HUDSON, Wis. - LeRoy Frederick Miller, age 83, of Hudson, Wisconsin, and formerly of St. Paul, Minnesota, and long time resident of La Crosse, Wisconsin, died at the Hudson Medical Center in Hudson.
He was born August 2, 1914, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the son of LeRoy L. and Frieda (Blomquist) Miller. He received his education and graduated from Cornell High School in Cornell, Wisconsin. He attended and graduated from the Wisconsin Business College in La Crosse, Wisconsin, in 1934. He was employed by the City of La Crosse as an accountant in the City Water Department and as Treasurer for the City of La Crosse Credit Union. He was united in marriage to Isabelle Ebert on June 17, 1939, in La Crosse, Wisconsin. They made their home in La Crosse for over 50 years then moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1989. He was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus with the Catholic Church. He and his wife loved to travel and was a member of the United Travelers Club and traveled world wide. He also enjoyed ball room dancing and loved his family and being with people.
LeRoy Miller is survived by his wife of 58 years, Isabelle; daughters, Judith Shilling of St. Paul, Minn., Donna (Phil) Miller-Hicks of Phoenix, Ariz., Mary (James) Hass of Cottage Grove, Minn., Gloria (Thomas) Clark of North Hudson, Wis., Katherine Miller of Kissimmee, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; one sister and four brothers. He was preceded in death by a son, LeRoy L. Miller; and one sister and four brothers.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 3 p.m. today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson, Wis., Father Pater Szleszinski officiating with Elsie Sandquist as organist and music by the Hope Choir. Soloist Pam Guldan will accompany the Hope Choir.
Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, La Crosse, Wis., with active casket bearers being Justin Miller, David Fulmer, David Chambers, Dennis Osiecki, John Clark, Michael Sarazin, Erik Henrikson and Daniel Anderson.
O'Connell's Valley Funeral Home, Hudson, is handling the arrangements.

William S. Taylor
William S. Taylor of La Crosse and formerly of Galesville died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, of cancer at age 88. He resided at Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center since early November.
Mr. Taylor was born April 24, 1909, in New Auburn, Wis., to William Chester and Gertrude Bertha Crownhart Taylor. He graduated from the New Auburn High School and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. He also attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for one year where he studied civil engineering.
On June 30, 1939, he married Elizabeth M. Christophersen in Superior, Wis. They had three children, Carson W. (Gudrun) of Portland, Ore., Christopher L. of Slidell, La., and Carola E. (Richard) Jobst of Franklin, Wis.
Mr. Taylor designed and supervised construction of numerous civil engineering projects with many water, sewer and street projects being still in service. He worked for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Superior Division, for twelve years, the Butler Shipyards in Superior during World War II, the Schilling Electric Company, Galesville for 13 years and the Davy Engineering Company, La Crosse, for 21 years until his retirement in 1980.
The Taylors enjoyed traveling, completing 33 major trips including 16 overseas trips. In his last years, Mr. Taylor wrote a travelog, and also a family history.
He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and previously a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, La Crosse and Zion Lutheran Church, Galesville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth M., who died Feb. 1, 1996; one brother, Robert D. of Idaho Falls, Idaho; and his parents. He is survived by one brother, Verne W. Taylor of Yreka, Calif.; two sisters, Anna Lund and Gladys Calkins, both of Chetek, Wis.; his three children; one grandson and four granddaughters.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 1997, at Smith Mortuary in Galesville, with spring burial at Pine Cliff Cemetery in Galesville. Friends may call from 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the mortuary.
Memorials may be directed to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Gundersen Lutheran Hospital Foundation, La Crosse, or Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center, all of La Crosse.

Martha M. Witt
KENDALL, Wis. - Martha M. Witt, 87, of Kendall, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at the Mulder Health Care Facility in West Salem.
She was born August 5, 1910, to Gottlieb and Ella (Grassman) Cook in Clifton, Wis. She was united in marriage to Edwin A. Witt on June 26, 1929, at St. Peters Ev. Lutheran Church at Indian Creek. They farmed in the town of Wellington all their married lives. Edwin preceded her in death on March 24, 1987. She was an active and faithful member of St. Matthew Ev. Lutheran Church, South Ridge, and a member of the Ladies Aid. A loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by a daughter, Verna (William) Smillie of West Salem; a son, Ivan (Shirley) Witt of Kendall; five grandchildren, Sterling (Joan), Kevin, Kenneth (Barb) Witt, all of Kendall, Dawn (Paul) Gullickson of Wausau, Scott (Theresa) Smillie of La Crosse; seven great-grandchildren, Megan and Travis Witt, Leah and Jenna Gullickson, Benjamin, Alyssa and Jack Smillie; three brothers, Alvin (Ruth) Cook of Wilton, Floyd (Lois) Cook of Tomah, Rudolph (Elaine) Cook of Milwaukee; one sister, Margaret Harmel; three sisters-in-law, Evelyn and Mildred Cook and Elna Englerth; one brother-in-law, Stan Crawford. She is further survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, Edwin, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, two sisters and a great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 29, 1997, at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew Ev. Lutheran Church, South Ridge. The Rev. Fred Fedke will officiate. Burial will be in the South Ridge Lutheran Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Smith-Nelson Funeral Home, Kendall, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 until 9 p.m. And at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home at 8 p.m. on Sunday evening.

Rachel E. Jordan
SPARTA, Wis. - Rachel E. Jordan, 86, of Sparta, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at the Morrow Memorial Home, Sparta.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Congregational United Church of Christ, Sparta. Burial will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta.
Friends may call at the Lanham-Kann Funeral Home, Sparta, on Sunday from 5 until 8 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Mary E. Zinkle
GREENFIELD/PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. - Mary E. Zinkle, 96, of Greenfield, Wis., and formerly of Prairie du Chien, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at the Clement Manor Nursing Home, Greenfield.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, in St. Gabriel's Catholic Church and burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Prairie du Chien.
Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until services Friday in the church.
The Garrity Funeral Home of Prairie du Chien is assisting the family.

Clara L. Kugel
WAUKON, Iowa - Clara L. Kugel, 100, of Waukon, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today in Zalmona Presbyterian Church, rural Waukon. Burial will be in Zalmona Cemetery.
Martin Funeral Home, Waukon, is in charge of arrangements.

Fred Krogan
VIROQUA, Wis. - Fred Krogan, 42, of Viroqua, passed away Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at the Bethel Home in Viroqua.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Franklin Lutheran Church at Folsom. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Sime Funeral Home in Readstown; and one hour prior to services Monday in the church.

Laura Abbott
TOMAH, Wis. - Laura Abbott, 95, formerly of Warrens, Wis., died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, in the Clark County Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Warrens. Burial will be in the Warren-Mill Cemetery, Warrens. There will be no visitation.
The Ninneman-Steele Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Anna S. Meyers
LAKE CITY, Minn. - Anna S. Meyers, 82, of Lake City, Minn., died Wednesday, Dec. 24, 1997, at her daughter's home in rural La Crosse, Wis., of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Lake City.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Mahn Family Funeral Homes Anderson-Peterson Chapel, Lake City, Minn.; and also one hour before services Monday in the church.
Memorials are preferred to donor's choice.
