Dorothy Magdalena Schiller
Dorothy Magdalena Schiller of Ellsworth, and formerly of Maiden Rock, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at the Ellsworth Care Center, where she lived since Aug. 25, 1992. She was 76.
She was born June 28, 1921, in Hampton, Minn., to Paul and Philomena (Duerr) Endres. She attended school in Hampton.
She married Martin Schiller Sept. 9, 1953, in Hampton. They moved to rural Maiden Rock, where they farmed until moving in 1979 into Maiden Rock.
She was a homemaker her entire life and worked for a few years at the Maiden Rock School, where she served lunches. She enjoyed knitting and crafts. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Plum City.
She is survived by: one son, Ronald (Vicky) Schiller of Maiden Rock; two granddaughters; one sister, Mary (Anthony) Kasel; eight brothers, Sylvester, Eugene (Lee), the Rev. Gilbert, John (Marian), Donald (Joanne), Paul (Sharon), David (Sarah) and Robert (Diane).
She was preceded in death by: her husband; two brothers, Wilfred and Ben; and one sister, Odelia Schiller.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 11, at St. John's Catholic Church, Plum City, with her brother, the Rev. Gilbert Endres, and the Rev. Ambrose Blenker officiating.
Swandby-Murphy Funeral Home, Maiden Rock, handled arrangements.

Joseph P. Springer, M.D.
ELMWOOD - Joseph P. Springer, M.D., of Durand died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998. He was 81.
He was born June 27, 1916, the son of Frank and Vera (Doughty) Springer. He was born and raised in Elmwood. He graduated from Elmwood High School in 1933. He received his undergraduate degree from UW-Madison in 1942 and joined the U.S. Marine Corps that same year. He attended the University of Wisconsin Medical School and graduated in 1944. He did an internship in Phoenix, Ariz., and a residency in Pueblo, Colo. He then returned to Elmwood in 1951 to join his brother, Frank Springer, Jr., M.D., in a medical practice.
In 1957, he established his own practice in Durand. He took a leave of absence from his practice in 1964 to serve on the Hospital Ship Hope in Conakry, Africa. In 1966, he was a volunteer physician in DaNang, Viet Nam, where he ran a pediatric hospital. In 1969, Dr. Springer spent a year in Mound Bayou, Miss., in a clinic for indigent citizens run by Tufts University. He returned to Durand, where he practiced through 1973. In 1974, he worked on the island of Saipan in the Western Pacific. After completing a fellowship in geriatric medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Springer was the Medical Director at the Dunn County Health Care Center until he retired in 1987.
He is remembered as an avid outdoorsman and environmentalist who spent many hours canoeing the Chippewa River and Lake Eau Galle. He loved reading, music, tennis and maintained a healthy sense of humor throughout his life. He defined himself as a country doctor and was known by his trademark whistle.
He is survived by: two daughters, Sally Larson of Albuquerque, N.M., and Barbara Springer of Denver, Colo.; two sons, Joseph, Jr. of the Eau Claire area and Stephen of Vermillion, S.D.; four grandchildren, Brandon White, Martha, Eric and Joey Springer Udelhofen; and by his sister, Dorothy Estes of San Diego, Calif., and Frank Springer, M.D., of Elmwood.
He was preceded in death by: his parents and his two infant children, Frank Christopher and Martha.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the Methodist Church in Elmwood. Burial will be at Spring Lake Cemetery in rural Elmwood. Friends were to call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Rhiel Funeral Home, Durand, and one hour prior to the funeral service in Elmwood. Donations in lieu of flowers should be made to the Durand Public Library.
Arrangements were by the Rhiel Funeral Home, Durand.

Lyle E. Sumter
Lyle E. Sumter of Ellsworth died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at the Lutheran Home, River Falls. He was 81.
He was born Jan. 27, 1917, in Spring Valley to George and Rose (Peterson) Sumter.
He married Margaret Fritz Jan. 5, 1941, in Red Wing. While in the Army during World War II, he served in the European Theater, participating in the Battle of the Bulge, Normandy Beach Invasion, Ardennes Forest Campaign and others. He received the Bronze Star for his service. He worked hauling milk for 35 years.
He is survived by: his wife, Margaret of Ellsworth; one sister, Dorothy Wolske of Menomonie; one brother, Ray (Bobette) Sumter of Ellsworth; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 16, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Ellsworth, with the Rev. J. Keith Trembath officiating. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Spring Lake Township.

Marjorie E. Wedricka
Marjorie E. Wedricka of Red Wing died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 1998, at Fairview-University Medical Center, Minneapolis. She was 70.
She was born Oct. 16, 1927, in Lake City, Minn., to Charles and Blanche (Brock) Savage. She grew up and attended school in the Frontenac, Minn., area. She worked at Red Wing Shoe Company and married Tony Wedricka Aug. 12, 1978, in Red Wing. She enjoyed flowers, sewing, painting and crafts.
She is survived by: her husband; one daughter, Dianna Regenscheid of Red Wing; four sons, John (Linda) Newman of Pepin, Michael (Patricia) Newman of Red Wing, Dennis (Genelle) and Elmer (Marilyn) Newman of Bixby, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five sisters, Jeanette Wadewitz of Phoenix, Ariz., Evelyn (Gerald) Nelson of Missoula, Mont., Mary Jean Goyer of Frontenac, Shirley (Dave) Thoms of Hager City and Barbara Newman of Red Wing; three brothers, Charles (Pat) and Donald Savage of Red Wing, and Jack (Gertrude) Savage of Welch, Minn.
She was preceded in death by: two sisters, Ruth Ann Heineman and June Jablonske; and two brothers, Bill and Philip Savage.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 13, at Christ Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Philip McNairy officiating. Pallbearers were: Dennis, Elmer, Jason, John and Michael Newman and Dianna Regenscheid. Burial was in Old Frontenac Cemetery.
Mahn Family Funeral Homes, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel, handled arrangements.

Orlande Phillipps
RIVER FALLS - Orlande Phillipps of River Falls died on Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at University Hospital in Minneapolis. He was 79.
He was born on Dec. 7, 1918, in the Town of Kinnickinnic, the son of Carl and Verna (Knight) Phillipps.
He married Anna Cernohous on Sept. 5, 1959, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in River Falls. He was a farmer and worked at Lund's Machine Shop as a mechanic, and at NorLake, Inc., in Hudson.
He loved to fish on the Kinnickinnic River and was an avid deer hunter. He enjoyed the outdoors.
Survivors include: his wife, Anna of River Falls; his son, John of River Falls; his daughter, Maryann of Hager City; his brothers, Robert of River Falls and Glenn of Prescott; his sisters, Mae Sumner of River Falls, Lois Halls of Roberts and Pauline Wymer of River Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Verna.
Funeral was Monday, Feb. 16, at St. Bridget Catholic Church with Fr. Gerald Harris officiating. Interment was in St. Bridget's Cemetery in River Falls. Pallbearers were: Randy Phillipps, Glenn Hall, Gary Sumner, Don Phillipps, Duane Hall and Ron Weishaar. Honorary pallbearers were: Stan Prochnow, Jack Larson, Vernon Waxon and Kenny Giske.
Cashman Mortuary handled arrangements.

Donald L. Thibado
ELMWOOD -- Donald L. Thibado of Menomonie died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, at Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home in Elmwood. He was 85.
He was born May 10, 1912, in the Town of Dunn, Dunn County, to Joseph and Mary (Stevens) Thibado. He attended the Kyle country school and then farmed.
He married Josephine Hubbard July 11, 1936, in Red Wing. After their marriage, they lived in the Town of Dunn.
He owned Thibado Trucking and hauled lime to farmers for many years. The past two-and-a-half years, he had resided at the Heritage of Elmwood Nursing Home.
He is survived by: his wife, Josephine, Menomonie; six children, Virginia (Karl) Kunz, Hudson, William (Audrey) Thibado, Menomonie, Jerry (Julie) Thibado, Rathdrum, Idaho, Jack (Sharon) Thibado, Menomonie, Jeanine (Jack) Weick, Sunrise, Fla., and Steven (Barbara) Thibado, Menomonie; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; five brothers and four sisters; and one grandson, Duane Kunz.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Feb. 14, at New Hope Lutheran Church in Downsville, with Rev. Richard Klabunde officiating. Interment of the cremains was in Riverview Cemetery.
Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie handled arrangements.

Hilda Christine Vinge
Hilda Christine Vinge of Ellsworth, formerly of Maiden Rock, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998 at the Ellsworth Care Center. She was 84.
She was born Oct. 29, 1913 in New Effington, S.D. the daughter of Jens and Anna (Pedersen) Jensen. She attended school in New Effington.
She married Norman Vinge May 1, 1931 in Sisseton, S.D. They farmed in the Sisseton area until 1941 when they moved to Maiden Rock where they also farmed. He died March 8, 1997.
She is survived by two daughters, Lucille Wedrickas of Red Wing, Minn. and Delphine Kukuska of Maiden Rock; two sons, James (Beverly) vinge of Bay City; Mark Vinge of Red wing; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Andrew (Gladys) Jensen of Manitou, Okla., Alvin Jensen of New Effington; one sister, Mildred (Ted) Raaen of Apple Valley, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Norma Duffy; four sisters, Carla Jensen, Dagney Vinge, Hazel Hultberg and Alvina Pakerney; three brothers, Clarence, Henry and Oscar Jensen.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19 at Assembly of God with Thomas Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Burnside Cemetery in Red Wing. Visitation will be at Mahn Family Funeral homes, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. and on Thursday one hour prior to the time of the services at the church.
Pallbearers will be Jeffery Kukuska, Richard Kukuska, Christopher Vinge, Keith Vinge, Randy Wedrickas, Robert Wedrickas. Honorary bearers will be Daniel Duffy, Stacy Kukuska, Debra Ruiz, Jill Tharalson, Heather Vinge and Lisa Vinge.
Mahn Family Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
