Rev. Paul Bailey
SEBRING -- Rev. Paul Chester Bailey, 80, of 800 S. 15th St., died Thursday, Jan. 7, at Crandall Medical Center, following a long illness. A public service of celebration will be Saturday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m. at Bennett Chapel of Copeland Oaks. Private burial will be at Friends Cemetery in Damascus. There will be no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to Life Care Fund at Copeland Oaks, which is the retirement community where he lived. Arrangements are being handled by Gednetz-Ruzek Funeral Home, 126 W. Vermont Ave., Sebring. He was born Nov. 3, 1918 in Mahoning County to the Rev. Charles F. and Ethel (Shreve) Bailey and married Dorothy Cope of Salem, Illinois on Sept. 8, 1943. She survives. Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Bonnie (the Rev. Don) Cummings of Cleveland, and the Rev. John Bailey of Clyde; five grandchildren; a sister, Lois Richardson of Parma, and a brother, the Rev. George Bailey of Parma.

Richard Snyder
MARSHALLVILLE -- Richard C. Snyder, 76, of Marshallville, died Friday, Jan. 8, at his home. Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Gresser Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Burton officiating. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Marshallville. Friends may call Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the funeral home. He was born April 28, 1922 in Copley to Burt and Eda E. (Hodgeman) Snyder and married Wava May Morris in April, 1940. She died in October, 1984. Surviving are his children, Jerry (Becky) Snyder, Sandra (Dan) Scott, Diana (Keith) Rowland, and Carol Snyder, all of Orrville, Janet (Don) Ellis of Rittman and Tammy (Roger) Hale of Sterling; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and a special friend, Goldie Soles, of Barberton.

Albert Lapp
RITTMAN -- Albert E. Lapp, 92, formerly of Rittman, died Thursday, Jan. 7, at West View Manor in Wooster. Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Marshallville with the Rev. Tom Fox officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's Church Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the church. Arrangements are being handled by Fickes Funeral Home in Jeromesville. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wayne County, 2525A Back Orrville Road, Wooster 44691. He was born May 1, 1906 in Monroe County to John W. and Ella (Freidiger) Lapp and married Zelma Eberly. She died previously. Surviving are his children, Ila Brenneman of Wooster, Betty Huffman of Seville, Carol Lapp of Rittman, Charlene Schweinberg of Warner Robins, Ga., and Paul Lapp of Jeromesville; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and a sister, Edna Litman of Lancaster.

William Berkhouse
APPLE CREEK -- William A. Berkhouse, 66, of Apple Creek, died Friday morning, Jan. 8, in the emergency room of Dunlap Memorial Hospital in Orrville, following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Mount Eaton with the Rev. Jacqueline McMillen officiating. Burial will be in the Apple Creek Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the Spidell Funeral Home in Mount Eaton. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul UCC, P.O. Box 196, Mount Eaton, OH 44659 or Apple Creek Vol. Fire Dept., P.O. Box 208, Apple Creek, OH 44606. He was born in Guernsey County on Oct. 9, 1932 to William F. and Sara (Morhead) Berkhouse and had lived most of his life near Apple Creek. On Nov. 17, 1956 he married Jean Weckesser, who survives. He is also survived by three sons, Mike and Heidi of Apple Creek, Steve of Apple Creek and Jeff of Orrville; a granddaughter, Kayla; a sister, Mrs. Ross (Sara) Kackley of Byesville.

Peggy Bell
SMITHVILLE -- Peggy Bell, of Smithville, died Friday morning, Jan. 8, at Smithville-Western Care Center, where she had resided since 1993. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be at Lutheran Cemetery in Cleveland at a later date. Custer Funeral Home, Wooster, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Smithville-Western Care Center Activity Depart., 4110 E. Smithville Western Road, Wooster, Ohio 44691. Mrs. Bell was born Jan. 8 in Cleveland to John and Emelie (Witt) Kosmahl and has been a Wayne County resident for the last five years. She was a homemaker and married William F. H. Bell on Aug. 23, 1935 in Cleveland. He died in 1974. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Lowell A. (Marilyn J.) Frantz of Smithville; two sons, William R. and Barbara J. Bell of Suffield, Ohio, Laurence J. (Valerie R.) Bell of Zoar, Ohio; four grandchildren, Steve Frantz, Ron and Laura Frantz, David Frantz and Billie Bell, and one great-grandson, Nathan Frantz.

Arlene Carpenter
DOYLESTOWN -- Arlene Carpenter, 76, of Doylestown, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999. Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Zak-Monbarren Funeral Home in Doylestown, with Father Carl Ciprian officiating. Burial will be at Chestnut Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. She was born Dec. 3, 1922 in Norton to Bert Clair and Bertha (Frase) Heffelfinger and married Lewis Carpenter on Sept. 26, 1944. He died in 1981. Surviving are children and their spouses, Clair Carpenter of Doylestown and Linda and James Kamenar of Barberton; grandchildren, Annette and Julianna Kamenar and Michael and wife, Jennifer, Kamenar, all of Barberton; a brother, James Heffelfinger of Barberton; and a sister, Winnie Greening of North Carolina.

Emory Price
DOYLESTOWN -- Emory H. Price, 88, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999. Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Zak-Monbarren Funeral Home in Doylestown, with the Rev. Dr. Charles F. Billington officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Friends may call Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Akron Baptist Temple. Emory H. Price was born Aug. 16, 1910 in LaFollette, Tenn., to John and Minnie (King) Price and married Emma Lee Wormsley on Aug. 26, 1937. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Emma Lee Price of Doylestown; children and their spouses, Roger and Rita Price of Doylestown, Charles and Theresa Price of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dolores and Walter McNosky of Doylestown; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Georgia Barnett of Akron.

James Davis Sr.
BARBERTON -- James A. Davis Sr., 90, formerly of 31st St., NW, Barberton, and a resident of Brenn-Field Nursing Center, Orrville, for the past four months, died Friday evening, Jan. 8, 1999, at Dunlap Memorial Hospital in Orrville. Services will be Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m. at Auble Funeral Home in Orrville, with Pastor Walter Jordan officiating. Burial will be at Poe Cemetery in Medina County. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Orrville Area Boys & Girls Club, in care of the Endowment Fund, 820 N. Ella St., Orrville 44667. Surviving are a son and his wife, James A. and Donna Dale Davis Jr. of Orrville; grandchildren and their spouses, James A. and Chris Davis III and Daniel A. and Lori Davis, both of Orrville, Denise K. Davis of Cleveland Heights and Dawn and Tim Hart of Wilmington; and great-grandchildren, Jamie, Justin, Brett and Kaylie Davis. His wife, Grace Williams, died in 1993. They were married in 1973.

Freda Seckel
ORRVILLE -- Freda L. Seckel, 83, 314 N. Vine St., died Friday, Jan. 8, at Aultman Hospital in Canton. Services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Gresser Funeral Home in Orrville, with the Rev. Barbara Morrison officiating. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville. Friends may call Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. She was born April 30, 1915 in Orrville to Benjamin and Emma (Herman) Studer and married Paul Seckel on June 10, 1940. He died Sept. 16, 1995. Surviving are sons and their wives, Clyde Benjamin Seckel of Ravenna, David Paul and Valerie Seckel of Tallmadge and Fred H. and Shirley Seckel of Orrville; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Studer and Sophia Tustin, both of Orrville; and nieces and nephews.

Miriam Washburn
WEST SALEM -- Miriam F. (Mowrer) Washburn, 90, of West Salem, died Saturday, Jan. 9, at Lodi Community Hospital. Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Matteson Funeral Home in West Salem, with the Rev. Martha Mathatas officiating. Burial will be at Congress Cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Town & Country Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 175, West Salem 44287. She was born May 1, 1908, in West Salem to Henry B. and Susan Isabell (Ritter) Messmore and married Francis Ora Mowrer on April 23, 1925. He died Jan. 16, 1965. On Nov. 10, 1979, she married Lincoln Washburn. He died Feb. 15, 1986. Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Hines of West Salem; stepchildren, Lincoln Washburn Jr. of Pennsylvania, Earl Dean Washburn of Mansfield, Robert Washburn and Mary Ellen Gorham, both of Texas; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 22 stepgrandchildren; 20 great-step-grandchildren; and a sister, Hazel Pinkley of Wooster.

Lela Blackburn
RITTMAN -- Lela L. Blackburn, 78, formerly of South Fourth Street, Rittman, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 10, at Smithville-Western Care Center. Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Gillman Funeral Home in Rittman, with C. Ermal Allen officiating. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Wadsworth. Friends may call Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to First Church of Christ, 50 N. Main St., Rittman 44270. She was born March 13, 1920, on the family homestead in Taylor Creek, Mont., to William B. and Nellie (Hayes) Hurt and married Robert I. Blackburn on Dec. 25, 1939. He survives. Surviving are children and their spouses, Michael and Jane Blackburn of Parma, Dorothy and Richard Gillman of Rittman and Elaine Blackburn of Barberton; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Bessie Shirey
DOYLESTOWN -- Bessie M. Shirey, 81, of Doylestown, died Saturday, Jan. 9, at Altercare of Wadsworth. Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Zak-Monbarren Funeral Home in Doylestown, with the Rev. Robert Webb officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Friends may call Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. She was born Aug. 20, 1917 in Princeton, W.Va., to Charles and Sylvia (Johnson) Durr and married Paul E. Shirey Sr. He died in 1989. Surviving are children and their spouses, Paul E. and Marie Shirey of Wooster, Charles W. and Cheryl Shirey, Ernest G. Shirey and William H. and Phyllis Shirey, all of Barberton and Martha and Robert Walker of Doylestown; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bill Durr of West Virginia.

Darrell Woods
MASSILLON -- Darrell M. Woods, 64, of Massillon, died Saturday, Jan. 9, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home in Dalton. Services will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Zak-Monbarren Funeral Home in Dalton, with the Rev. Michael McHale officiating. Burial will be at Dalton Cemetery. Friends may call two hours prior to the services at the funeral home. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Dean (Mary) Ferrell of Navarre; a brother, Dean Woods of Dalton; and half-brothers, Lloyal Santmyer of Dalton and Dale Santmyer of Doylestown.

Gerald Brammer
WOOSTER -- Gerald Brammer, 68, 2945 Taylor Road, died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at Wooster Community Hospital. Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Creston, with Major Mary West officiating. Friends may call Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home, where Masonic services will be held at 8:45 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Wooster Salvation Army, 437 S. Market St., Wooster; or American Heart Association Wayne County Branch, P.O. Box 267, Wooster 44691. He was born Nov. 5, 1930 in Lodi to Homer Leslie and Opal Virginia (Wagner) Brammer and married Jewel D. Dennis on Jan. 22, 1954. She died Oct. 2, 1998. Surviving are children, Cheryl Brammer of Westerville and Leslie Brammer of Wooster; a grandson, Beau Brammer of Magnolia; and a brother, Homer Dean Brammer of Overton.

Albert Carr Jr.
WOOSTER -- Albert W. "Dave" Carr Jr., 70, 270 Valley View Drive, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at Wooster Community Hospital, after a brief illness. Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Murray Funeral Home in Fredericksburg, with the Revs. Robert Fetterhoff and Scott Low officiating. Burial will be at Fredericksburg East Cemetery, where military honors will be held. Friends may call Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Wooster Township Rescue Squad, 1917 Millersburg Road, Wooster 44691. He was born March 17, 1928, in Fredericksburg to Albert and Edith (Martin) Carr Sr. and married Nancy L. Speelman on July 6, 1952. She survives. Surviving are his wife; a son, Michael Carr and his fiancee, Beverly Chapman of Nashville, sons and their wives, Dennis and Sandra Carr and Kevin and Jill Carr, all of Wooster; grandchildren, Matthew, Cassandra, Haley and Shayne; sisters and their spouses, Betty and Edward Bill of Parma, Joann and Roy Plant and Linda and Harold Alexander, all of Fredericksburg and Phyllis and Bob Powell of Shreve; and brothers and their spouses, Richard and Winnie Carr of Englewood, Fla., Lawrence and Betty Carr of Fredericksburg, Raymond Carr and Arthur and Pat Carr, all of Wooster.

Louise Mowrer
WOOSTER -- Louise A. Mowrer, 83, 4325 Overton Road, Wooster, died Saturday afternoon, Jan. 9, 1999, in the emergency room at Wooster Community Hospital, after an apparent heart attack. Services will be Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Custer Funeral Home, Wooster, with Pastor James W. Christensen officiating. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, Canton Metro Office, 4916 Hills & Dales Road, NW, Canton 44708. She was born Aug. 28, 1915 in Pike, W.Va., to John and Vina (Morris) Martin and married Harold W. Mowrer on Dec. 27, 1950 in Fort Wayne, Ind. He survives. Surviving in addition to her husband, are a son and daughter-in-law, Sonny and Jill Carmichael of Wooster; grandchildren and their spouses, Rick and Barb Carmichael and Renee and Gary Gwinn; great-grandchildren, Cory, Jessi and Shelby Carmichael; a brother, Pete Martin of Vienna, W.Va.; and a sister, Mrs. Ron (Cora) Matheny of New Metamoras.

Sylvia Eshelman
ORRVILLEM -- Sylvia M. Eshelman, 92, 708 S. Vine St., died Saturday, Jan. 9, at Aultman Hospital in Canton, after a short illness. Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Auble Funeral Home in Orrville, with the Rev. Barbara Morrison officiating. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery in Orrville. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. at the residence, following the services. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. She was born May 11, 1906 in Wooster to John H. and Ida (Spice) Kline and married Leonard S. Eshelman on May 14, 1936 in West Virginia. He died March 3, 1979. Surviving are daughters, Susan Eshelman of Orrville and Jane Eshelman of Columbus.

Alton Smail
GLENMONTM -- Alton E. Smail, 87, of Glenmont, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 10, at Sunset Nursing Home, Millersburg, after an extended illness. Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Alexander Funeral Home, Millersburg, with the Rev. Richard Matthews officiating. Burial will be at Nashville Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. He was born Feb. 5, 1911 in Holmes County to Benjamin and Myrtle (Patterson) Smail and married Fern E. Gilbert on March 22, 1933. She died Oct. 4, 1989. Surviving are children and their spouses, Richard W. and Joan Smail of Holmesville, Carol and Ralph Fortune of Big Prairie, Mary C. and Willard Huntsburger of Millersburg, Ronald W. and Frances Smail of Ashland, Gary C. and Delores Smail of Mansfield and Charles A. Smail of Loudonville; 21 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Calvin (Eva) Bucy of Apple Creek.

Mary Liggett
WOOSTER -- Mary E. Jacot Liggett, 87, 640 Gasche St., died Sunday morning, Jan. 10, at her home. Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at McIntire, Davis & Greene Funeral Home in Wooster, with the Rev. Dale Sanford officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Shreve. Friends may call Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 4815 Munson St., NW, Canton 44718; or to Hospice of Wayne County, 2525-A Back Orrville Road, Wooster 44691. She was born March 22, 1912 in Clinton Township to Harry J. and Flora (Force) Shriver and married Glenn Jacot. He died in 1943. She then married Paul Liggett. He died in 1993. Surviving are children, Mrs. Robert (Janet) Roby of Wooster and Dean Jacot of Plano, Texas; stepchildren, Elliott Liggett of Wooster and Laura Jean Liggett Pritchard of North Carolina; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Donald Saurers
COLUMBUS -- Donald L. Saurers, 67, of Columbus, formerly of Wayne County, died Saturday, Jan. 9, at his home after an extended illness. Memorial services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Liberty Presbyterian Church on Home Road, Delaware. Cremation has taken place. Friends may call today (Monday) from 2-4 and 7-9 at Jerry Spears Funeral Home, 2693 W. Broad St., Columbus. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Wayne County Branch, in care of Wooster Clinic, 1740 Cleveland Road, Wooster 44691. He was born July 7, 1931 in Apple Creek and was the son of Ralph L. Saurers and Idella (Bower) Saurers Coffee and married Anna Margaret Lewis in 1954 in Columbus. She survives. Surviving in addition to his wife are children and their spouses, Suzan and Greg Nobis of Delaware, Sandra and Kevin West of Archer, Fla., and Steven Saurers of Columbus; three grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, R. Leslie and Peg Saurers of Wooster; and numerous cousins in this area.
