JAMES BETHSHARES SANDERS
April 16, 1907 – December 11, 1999
Jim, the oldest of 4 children, was born in Paducah, KY to Dr. Lillard and Anne (Hisey) Sanders. In 1921 he was diagnosed with TB and his family were advised to take him to Arizona 'where he might live 6 months longer.' He spent months in a Prescott Sanatorium run by Dr. John Flinn, the father of the founder of the Flinn Foundation, and later he was a patient in several Tucson sanatoriums. All in all, he spent 5 years in bed before he was cured. Those 5 years were fruitful, however. Because he couldn't attend school with other students, his mother spent hours reading to him daily and studying with him. Through her, he developed his life long great love of literature and the pursuit of knowledge. A man with truly eclectic taste, he enjoyed poetry, mathematics, geology, philosophy, world history and literature of all kinds (especially 19th century English). In later years, a friend from the UA, a retired mathematics professor, said, 'Jim, you should have been a mathematician.' Another friend from the English department said, 'Jim, you should have been an English professor.' But his interests weren't just academic. While in bed, to keep at least his hands mobile, he took up prestidigitation, and taught himself an amazing variety of sleight-of-hand tricks. He even wrote his own manual detailing hundreds of card and sleight-of-hand tricks he had developed on his own. For years he was the delight at children's as well as adult parties when he produced a thimble from behind your ear, or a queen of spades from his sleeve. Another of his self-taught hobbies was gem cutting and facetting. He worked with nearly every kind of stone except diamonds. Because he couldn't afford to buy the necessary machinery, he simply designed and built what he needed. At another point he took up wrought iron work, creating beautiful fireplace screens, table legs, and graceful peacock sconces for the porch. If he didn't have a hammer in his hand, he had a screwdriver, and during the 50 years he and Florence lived in their home, he tore down, rebuilt, renovated and modified nearly every nook and cranny of the house. He also built furniture, did all kinds of woodworking, dabbled in upholstering, bought one of the first do-it-yourself hi-fi kits in Tucson, designed kitchen trash containers, baked bread and made wonderful menudo. There was practically no aspect of life that he didn't pursue. The only thing he didn't enjoy was house painting.
In addition to the partial list of hobbies above, Jim was also co-owner and manager of the Home Water Co., which served the needs of much of the South Tucson area from the 1930's until the mid '60's, when the city of Tucson bought it out. When the Home Water Co. was sold, dozens of cards and letters were sent to him by former customers, mourning the loss of such a good, friendly, and compassionate 'neighborhood' business.
Jim Sanders was predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Florence, his sister, Felicia Ann Wadell, and his brothers, David and Lillard Sanders. He is survived by his daughter Felicia and son-in-law Warren May and several nephews. The family would like to thank especially Alice and Ben (who are truly part of the family), Tillie, Lynne and Carol, as well as the staff of the TMC Hospice and The Harbourage Adult Care Home – all of you were wonderful. Donations in memory of this very special, unique and much loved man may be made to the TMC Hospice or to the Oracle Public Library, Oracle, AZ 85623. Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Thursday, December 16, at BRING'S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott Ave.
