JOHN 'JACK' FRANCIS COX - John Cox passed away January 31, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut on February 9, 1936 and came to Tucson with his family in 1946. He attended All Saints and Salpointe Catholic H.S. and graduated from Tucson High in 1954. John received his B.A. and M.A. in English from NAU, attended Stanford University and earned a PhD from ASU. He worked as an English professor at many colleges and universities, including stays in Cedar City, UT, Illinois, Kingman, AZ, Saudi Arabia, ASU and U of A. John won NAU's Distinguished Alumni Award in '97 and Alumni Achievement award in '98. John is predeceased by his parents, Margaret Mary and Thomas; and sister, Mary Elizabeth. He met and married Ginger Durfee in 1971. John is survived by Ginger and two daughters, Clare and Sarah; his brother, Thomas (Dee); nephews, Matthew and Thomas; and nieces, Barbara and Bridget. He was also greatly loved by his wife's family in Idaho. John was a PreRaphaelite and Hemingway scholar, connoisseur of jazz, Irish and military historian, published poet and author of scholarly articles, and one of the last great readers. We love and miss you Daddy and we know you're smiling down at us from Heaven!
Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., February 3, at South Lawn Mortuary (Rosary at 7:00), 5401 S. Park Ave. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 4, 2000 at St. John's Catholic Church with Fr. Liam officiating. A Graveside Service will be held at South Lawn cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salpointe Scholarship Fund, or the charity of your choice.

CRAYNE, John L., 48, of Tucson, died January 29, 2000. He was a member of Carpenters Union Local #408. Survived by wife, Christine Heath-Crayne; three daughters, Tera (Jason) Zubia of Albuquerque, NM, Stephanie Powers of Newport Beach, CA, Jessica (Colton) Durfey of Flagstaff, AZ; two brothers, Steve Crayne of Dawson, IL, Chuck Crayne of Baltimore, MD; three sisters, Patty Butler of Mesa, AZ, Pam Smith of Camano Isle, WA, Paula Crayne of Riverton, IL; mother and stepfather, Betty and Bob Kirner of Grand Junction, CO; grandchildren, Alexandria Zubia and Chayla Durfey. preceded in death by father, Richard Crayne. Service Thursday, 3:00 p.m. EVERGREEN MORTUARY. Friends may call one hour prior to service. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Heart Association in memory of John L. Crayne. CUSACK, Raymond J., age 78, of Tucson, AZ, died January 29, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Connie; daughter, Frances Cusack; sons, Syl and John Cusack; sister, Mary Frances (Emery) Gray; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn L. Cusack and sister, Mrs. Alice Baumann. Ray was a WWII veteranservingin the 3rd Army 90th Division. He was a Purple Heart recipient and a Georgetown University graduate. A Memorial Mass will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday, February 4, 2000 at St. Thomas the Apostle Blessed Sacrament Chapel, 5150 N. Valley View Rd. A Rosary and sharing service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 3, 2000 at the ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Avalon Chapel, 8090 N. Northern Ave. at Magee. Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Blake Foundation in his memory.

FLANAGAN, Irene M., age 72, a Tucson resident since 1953, passed away January 27, 2000. Born April 26, 1927 in Madawaska, Maine. Mrs. Flanagan was a member of VFW 4903 Woman's Auxiliary. She is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, James; sisters, Veronique Parent and Dorilda Kirovac; brothers, Hector and Antime Cote; grandson, Robert Benton of Akron, Ohio; granddaughter, Dawn Benton of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; nieces, Cindy Angerstine of Akron, Ohio, Pamela Bolyard of Akron, Ohio, and Diane Gardener of Tucson; three great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 2, 2000 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY, 5401 S. Park Ave.

FRENS, Dorothea M. Veck, died January 27, 2000. Born in Chicago, August 1, 1909, moved to Tucson in 1939; retired secretary from DMAFB. preceded in death by husband, Andrew Frens and only brother, Milton Veck. Survived by sister-in-law, Florentine Veck and nephews, Milton (Mary Lynn) Veck of Salem, Oregon and Frederick (Nancy) Veck of Mesa, AZ; two great-nieces, Kristin and Elizabeth Veck of Oregon; two great-nephews, Christopher and Matthew Veck of Mesa; and stepdaughters, Bonnie Stratford King and Norma Jepsen of Casa Grande. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m., and Funeral Service at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 3rd at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway. Burial will follow at Evergreen cemetery.

ROBERT O. HOOVER, age 62, passed away January 31, 2000. Bob is survived by his wife, Susan; daughter, Lorrie Schlecht; son, Robert G.; two grandchildren, Trent and Casie Lea; two great grandchildren, Fernando and Kristen, from Tucson; brother, Griff and sister, Nancy Cummings, Medford, OR. Bob arrived in Tucson when serving in the U.S. Air Force during 1956-1960 and upon his honorable discharge he made Tucson his home. Bob was the owner/operator of AMCEP, Inc. and an original member and past president of the Pima Air Museum. Visitation will be Thursday, February 3, 2000 between 4-8p.m. at Evergreen Mortuary, 3015 N. Oracle Rd., with Graveside service Friday, February 4, 2000 at 11a.m., at same location.

PHILIP AUGUST KARRER, 66, of Tucson lost his battle with cancer on January 29, 2000. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne Agnes Karrer. Survived by his children, Darrel, Randy and Cheryl; and grandchildren, Matthew and Aaron Karrer. Phil was a well respected local business owner for 30 years. He enjoyed his retirement in the Saddlebrooke community.
Memorial service to be held on Saturday February 5, 2000 at 4:00 p.m. at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church located at 7570 N. Thornydale Rd. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations to be made to the Arizona Cancer Center.

MASSAROTTI, Carmela, 98, of Tucson, passed away on February 1, 2000. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Massarotti, plus nieces and nephews. A courageous, loving and kind Jehovah's Witness, she served 17 years. Friends may call at ADAIR FUNERAL HOME, Dodge Chapel, 1050 N. Dodge at Speedway, Thursday, February 3, 2000 from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at ADAIR, DODGE CHAPEL, Friday at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Hope cemetery.

McCOY, Glessie 'Fern' 89, born August 24, 1910 in Sparta, Missouri, died peacefully January 30, 2000 in Tucson. preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Verill M. McCoy and her daughter, Clara Mae Arana and sons, J.D. and Ronnie McCoy. Fern loved her family, loved to fish and was very active in the Southern Baptist community in earlier years. She moved to Tucson in 1950. She is survived by the legacy she leaves behind: her son, Jerry (Rayma) McCoy; grandchildren, Marsha (Jim) Samuelson, Steven G. (Kathy) Emberton, Jeanie (Dennis) Merideth, Louie (Susan) Arana, Jr., Laurice Clifton, Jeffrey (Jay) McCoy; great grandchildren, Christine Castillo, Jennifer Samuelson, Lynette Salcido, Susan Gee, Debra Gramblin, Steven S. Emberton, Josiah Emberton, Elizabeth McChesney, Heather, Pamela and Alexander Merideth, Jacque and Robyn Arana, Matthew Clifton, Jason, Jacob and Jesse McCoy; great-great-grandchildren, Tommy, Nicholas and Haley Castillo, Garrett and Janaya Gaudette, Priscilla, Laura, Edward and Joshua Gee, Destiny and Breanna Gramblin. She is also survived by her sisters, Cleo Todd of Pomona, California and Janet Morris of Springfield, Missouri. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 4 at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, at 11:00 a.m.

PAAPE, James R. (Major, Ret.), born September 21, 1935 to Donald and Ione Paape in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, died January 31, 2000 of lymphoma cancer. While serving in the United States Air Force for 23 years, Jim became a seasoned fighter pilot, retiring in 1977. preceded in death by his father, Donald Paape. Survived by mother, Ione Paape; wife, Darlene; daughter, Beth Ann; son, William James (Lucy); granddaughter, Chelsea Kelsey. Also sister, Jeanne (Ted) Faul; brother, John (Marolyn) Paape, nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorial Service 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 2, 2000 at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway, with Pastor Harry Rohwer officiating.

SOTO, Alfred V., 65, of Tucson, passed away February 1, 2000. preceded in death by his father, Alfred O. Soto. Survived by wife, Carmen Soto; mother, Virginia V. Soto; daughters, Elizabeth (Don) Brown, Elaine (David) Gartrell, Coreen (Alfonso) Fregoso, and Diana (Almedeo) Stewart; sons, Andrew and Alfred Shawn Soto; brothers, Richard and Ronald Soto. Also survived by 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

MARGUERITE B. TOLLE - Born December 1, 1908, died January 29, 2000 in Tucson, Arizona where she had been a resident since 1935. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray William Tolle. Survived by son, Jerry (Joan) and grandchildren, William Martin Tolle and Brenda Kay Tolle. She worked at Myerson's White House Department Store for 35 years. She joined Naomi Rebekah Lodge in 1937. She was Noble Grand in 1944 and became State President in 1959. She was awarded the Declaration of Chivalry for her Lodge work and the Meritorious Service Award for her outstanding community service.
A memorial service will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall, 1150 N. Palo Verde at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 6th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oddfellows-Rebekah Visual Research Foundation, 1150 N. Palo Verde, Tucson, AZ 85716.

WINTERS, Michael T., died January 31, 2000. Born August 8, 1912 in Big Foot, Texas, and moved with his parents shortly thereafter to Warren, AZ where his father practiced law and served several terms as a judge in Lowel. Mike served in the US Navy during WW II with the Seabees, constructing air bases in the South Pacific. He settled in Tucson in 1945 and was for many years the proprietor of Winters' Auto Body and Paint Shop. He was an active member of El Camino Baptist Church and Gideons International. Survived by wife, Jacque; children, Richard of Tempe, Victoria Clark of Glendale; grandchildren, Linn, Charla, Michelle LeAnn, Michelle Lynn and Connie; great-grandchildren, Josuha, Garrett and Channel. Funeral Service 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 4 at El Camino Baptist Church, 7777 E. Speedway Blvd. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Remembrances may be made to El Camino Baptist Church.

WRUBEL, Priscilla Helen, beloved mother and grandmother. Tucson resident since April 1971, passed away January 31, 2000. She was born in Bay City, Michigan, December 27, 1902, youngest and last surviving of nine children of William and Susan Rytlewski. preceded in death by husband of 46 years, Andrew, and one infant grandson. Survived by son, Virgil and daughter-in-law, Marilyn and son, Donald; granddaughter, Elaine Ray; grandsons, Daniel, Andrew and Timothy and nine great-grandchildren. Priscilla loved bowling and was an avid bingo player. She was a member of All Saints Church, Flint, MI for 37 years and a retired member of the Rosary Society at All Saints. In 1971 Andrew, Priscilla and son Donald followed son Virgil and his family from Flint to Tucson and lived in Tucson Estates until she entered foster care in 1991. Priscilla lived a long, rich, full life. She will be sorely missed.

FOX, Frederick Samuel 'Sam', 43, died suddenly January 31, 2000. A resident of Tucson since 1981, Sam is survived by a daughter, Kristie Lyn Stewart of Maryland; his parents, Fred and Olive Fox, and a brother, Bill Fox of Tucson; a sister, Sandy Kelman of Maryland; and five nephews and a niece. Sam was an avid biker who had won several trophies for his bikes. He was a former chairman of the Tucson Chapter, Harley Owners Group, and had many close friends in the Sunriders Motorcycle Club. Sam was a software engineer and formerly worked in the voter registration division for Pima County. A viewing will be held on Friday, February 4 from noon to 2:00 p.m. at East Lawn Palms Funeral Home, 5801 E. Grant Rd. Friends and fellow riders are invited to a Memorial Service on Saturday, February 5 at 3:00 p.m. at the Christ Memorial Church, 6565 E. Broadway. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the CPS Childrens Fund, c/o Aviva, 2001 N. Campbell, Tucson, AZ 85719.

GRADILLAS, Arturo R., 95, of Tucson, passed away February 1, 2000. Survived by loving family. Visitation will be held Thursday, February 3, 2000 from 4:00 to 10:00 p.m. at CARRILLO'S TUCSON MORTUARY, North Chapel, 204 S. Stone Ave., with a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered Friday, February 4, 2000, 10:00 a.m. at St. Margaret's Church. Interment will follow at Holy Hope cemetery.

GRZESKOWIAK, MSGT Francis 'Frank' F., 70, died January 31, 2000 at home. Born October 4, 1929 in Milwaukee, WI. A Tucson resident since 1968. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Bernadine 'Bernie'; sister, Catherine Schweda; sons, Bill (Mel) of San Diego, CA; Jim (Maria) of Tucson; Tracy (Helen) of Loveland, CO; daughter, Mary (Jeff) of Colorado Springs, CO; seven grandchildren: Charlene, Chelsea, Mitchell, Matthew, Gina, Jason and Casey; many nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Frank was a decorated Marine Corps Combat Veteran of 21 years, serving in both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He had a long full life and will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved him. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 on Friday, February 4, 2000, at Our Mother of Sorrows Church on South Kolb Rd. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the local Tucson Chapter of the American Cancer Society or Our Mother of Sorrows Church.

Alvin will be remembered for his love of woodworking, carving, and fishing.

HERNANDEZ, Anna Marie, 41, passed away February 1, 2000. She was preceded in death by her mother, Edith Avenetti. She is survived by her husband, Robert; daughters, Amanda, Melissa, Brianna, and son, Bobby; father, Albert Avenetti; sister, Elizabeth (Glen) Stephens; brothers, Jon (Diane) Avenetti and Albert (Candace) Avenetti; many nephews and nieces, and many loving and caring friends.
