Ivan George Gartenman, Sr.

Ivan George Gartenman Sr., age 72 of Morris, IN passed away Sunday morning August 22, 2004 at his home.

He was born April 28, 1932 in Ripley County, IN near Penntown, IN; the son of Leonard & Christina (Haven) Gartenman. He married Mary Ellen Biddle on June 9, 1956 in Penntown, IN.

Mr. Gartenman was a member of the American Legion Post 271 and VFW Post 3183 both of Batesville, IN. He retired in 1996 as a truck driver for Batesville Casket Co. after 36 years and was a US Army Veteran during the Korean War.

He is survived by his son Ivan (Cindy) Gartenman Jr. of Batesville, IN and daughter Sandra (Martin) Weiler of Batesville, IN. He will also be missed by his grandchildren Bradley “BJ” and Amber Gartenman, Brandon, Derrick, Curtis & Kaleb Weiler; brothers David Gartenman of Yorkville, IN and Alvin Gartenman of Brookville, IN. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife Mary Ellen Gartenman on Sept. 30, 1987.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, August 25 at 10:00 AM at Meyers Funeral Home, Batesville, IN with Rev. Charles Flory officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 - 8 PM. Burial will be in Rossburg Cemetery with Military Grave Side Rites. Memorials are suggested to Margaret Mary Hospital Hospice.

Carolyn Margaret Koester

Carolyn Margaret Koester (nee Emsweller), age 76 years of Batesville, IN passed away Sunday, August 1, 2004 at her home in Batesville.

born February 14, 1928 in Laurel, IN; the daughter of Doyle & Merle (Lockwood) Emsweller. She married Charles Koester on March 3, 1946 in Richmond, IN and he preceded her on July 29, 1992.

Mrs. Koester was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, a homemaker and retired from the Keg and Kettle, Vinney’s, Cheers and Woodwinds.

She is survived by her sons Michael (Marilyn) Koester of Columbus, IN; Robert (Rae) Koester of Batesville, IN and David (Beth) Koester of Batesville, IN. She will also be missed by her grandchildren Jason, Melissa & Gavin Koester; sister Lois (Late Bill) Ault of Newnan, GA and brother Rev. Bob (Rosemary) Emsweller of Savannah, GA. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her brother Carson (Jean) Emsweller, she lives in Hamilton, OH.

Visitation will be Wednesday, August 4, 2004 from 4 - 8 pm at Meyers Funeral Home in Batesville. Funeral Services will be Thursday, August 5th at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Charles Flory officiating. Burial will be in St. John (Huntersville) Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Assoc. or Batesville Rescue 10.

Richard August Laker

Richard August Laker, age 94 years of Batesville, IN passed away Sunday August 1, 2004 at The Waters of Batesville.

He was born March 31, 1910 in St. Mary, Indiana; the son of Anthony & Mary (Scheele) Laker. He married Virginia Harmeyer on May 6, 1939 and she survives.

Mr. Laker was a member of St. Louis Church and Knights of St. John. He retired in 1975, after 40 years, from the Union Furniture Company in Batesville as a cabinet maker.

He is survived by his wife Virginia Laker, daughters Joan (James) Woodman of North Branford, CT; Marianne (Gerald) Freese of Cincinnati, OH and Alice (Joseph) Robb of Goodrich, MI; sons Dennis (Ruth) Laker of Phoenixville, PA and Ronald Laker of Tampa, FL. He will also be missed by his 16 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and sister Mathilda Harmeyer of Connersville, IN. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother Clarence Laker.

Visitation will be Friday, August 6, 2004 from 5-8 PM at Meyers Funeral Home Batesville, IN. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 10:30 AM at St. Louis Church in Batesville with Fr. Daniel Mahan officiating. Burial will be in St. Louis Church Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Margaret Mary Hospice or the American Lung Assoc.

Dorothy Pauline Morgan

Dorothy Pauline Morgan (nee Schoentrup), age 85 years of Batesville, Indiana passed away Saturday, July 17, 2004 at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Greensburg, IN.

She was born November 10, 1918 in Selby County, IN the daughter of William & Gertrude (Vogel) Schoentrup. She married Harold Morgan on October 26, 1950 and he preceded her in death.

She is also survived by her sister Bernice Peters of New Point, IN and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her sisters Thelma Huber, Zeta Mae Schoentrup and Mary Evelyn Schoentrup and brothers Karl, Robert, Paul & Irvin Schoentrup.

She was a retired nurses aid at Margaret Mary Hospital in Batesville.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at 11:00 AM at St. Louis Catholic Church in Batesville, IN with Fr. Christian Kappes officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 9:30 until time of service. Burial will be in St. Mark Cemetery, Batesville. Memorials are suggested to Batesville Rescue 10, Gibault School or Decatur County Hospice.

Alvina Louisa Westerfeld

Alvina Louisa Westerfeld, age 83 years of Batesville, IN passed away Thursday, July 1, 2004 in Batesville.

She was born March 3, 1921 in Batesville, the daughter of George & Frieda (Belter) Siebert. She married Raymond Westerfeld on August 12, 1939 and he preceded her in death. She was a 1938 graduate of Batesville High School

Mrs. Westerfeld is survived by her sons Eugene (Jenny) Westerfeld of Greensburg, IN; Steven Westerfeld of Dillsboro, IN and the late Kenneth (Rita) Westerfeld of Batesville, IN. She will also be missed by her 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, husband and son, she was also preceded in death by a grandson.

Visitation will be Saturday, July 3, 2004 from 9 - 11 AM followed by funeral services at 11:00 AM all at St. Paul Lutheran Church Crossroads with Pastor Robin Owen officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Church Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Rescue 10

Howard H. Westerfeld

Howard H. Westerfeld, age 85 years of Batesville, IN passed away Monday, June 21, 2004 at his home, on the farm, where he was born on June 18, 1919. He was the son of William & Elizabeth (Barg) Westerfeld.

Mr. Westerfeld married Stella Pat Goyert on November 29, 1941 at St. Paul Lutheran Church Crossroads. He is survived by his wife Stella Westerfeld; sons David (Janet) Westerfeld, Daniel Westerfeld & James (Melissa) Westerfeld all of Batesville & Rick (Patti) Westerfeld of Greensburg, IN and daughters Sharyn Cobler & Mary Anne (Snork) Walsman both of Batesville, IN. He will also be missed by 14 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; brothers Monroe Westerfeld of Batesville, IN and William Westerfeld of Indianapolis, IN; sisters Ethel Parmer of Columbus, IN and Evelyn Parmer of Edinburgh, IN. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister Mabel Bauer and brothers Wilbur, Clarence & Raymond Westerfeld.

He was a US Army Veteran during WWII, life long farmer, member of St. Paul Lutheran Church Crossroads and several different church organizations in the past.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 24, 2004 at 10:00 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church Crossroads with Pastor Robin Owen & Pastor Danny Wolford officiating. Visitation will be Wed. from 5 - 8 PM at Meyers Funeral Home, Batesville, IN.
Burial will be in the church cemetery with military grave side rites. Memorials are suggested to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Margaret Mary Hospital Hospice.

Eileen Ann Kessens

Eileen Ann Kessens (nee Klostermeyer), age 81 of Batesville, IN passed away Wed. June 16, 2004 at her home on the farm.

born October 14, 1922 in Batesville, the daughter of Gilbert & Bertha (Gunter) Klostermeyer. She married Virgil Kessens on April 12, 1947 and he survives. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church Crossroads and home maker on the family farm.

Mrs. Kessens is survived by her husband Virgil, daughter Donna Harrelson of Greensburg, IN; sons Gary (Cynthia), Robert (Joyce) & Kenneth (Diane) Kessens all of Batesville. She will also be missed by her 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Kathleen (Robert) Krieger, he lives in Batesville.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 19, 2004 at 10:00 AM at St. Paul Lutheran Church Crossroads with Pastor Gary Groth officiating. Visitation will be Friday, June 18, 2004 from 5 - 8 PM at Meyers Funeral Home, Batesville, IN. Burial will be in St. Paul Church Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Margaret Mary Hospital Hospice or St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Melvin H. Selke

Melvin H. Selke, age 87 years of Batesville, IN passed away Friday, June 11, 2004 at his home.

He was born August 20, 1916 in Ripley County, IN the son of John C. & Anna (Huffmeyer) Selke. He married Lelah Larrison onf February 24, 1938.

Mr. Selke is survived by his wife Lelah Selke, sons Robert Selke of Dayton, OH; Eugene (Coleen) Selke of Batesville, IN and Donald (Jane) Selke of Elkhart, IN; grandchildren Jason Selke of Dayton, OH; Amy McDougal of Cincinnati, OH; Terry Selke of Hamilton, OH; Kevin Selke of Batesville, IN and Derek Selke of Indianapolis, IN and Brent Selke of Indianapolis, IN; 5 great grandchildren and sister Ruth Bland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Ervan, Nelson, Earl & Lester Selke and sister Naomi Nickle.

He was a farmer and member of Adams Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 13, 2004 from 5 - 8 PM at Meyers Funeral Home Batesville, IN. Funeral Services will be Monday, June 14, 2004 at 2:00 PM at the funeral home with Pastor William Powlin officiating. Burial will be in Rossburg Cemetery, New Point, IN.
