Dr. Mack P Stewart
(October 23, 1920 - September 1, 2013)

Dr. Stewart, born to a faming family in 1920, was called into the ministry at 17 by an audible voice. He stopped plowing and ran to the house to tell his mother, "God called me to preach His Gospel!" His ancestors left southeast South Carolina in 1775 and began their journey westward. His granddad, John Stewart, arrived in LA in 1875. His mother, Florence Butler Stewart, orphaned at a young age along with two sibling, was raised by three families, all children of immigrants to America. The key family was Patrick 'Pat' Coffey's. So grateful for what they did for her, she and Mack Sr., gave this son, Mack Patrick, both both his dad's and Patrick Coffey's names. Family was very important to Brother Mack's parents. They spent much time with the families of their respective brothers and sisters, providing a model and the opportunity for their children to develop equally close relationships with extended family. Throughout their lives, with rare exception, those close relationships with family members continued. Few ever loved their entire family like Bro. Mack loved his. Jim Elliott, many years ago, wrote, "He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose." Our dad could've put his energy into an education and a career to enable him to gain treasures in this world, but he knew those couldn't go with him when he stood before his Heavenly Father. What good could they do him even NOW? Instead, following a bachelor's degree at Northwestern (NSU), Dr. Stewart chose to devote his education to the study of the one thing that will last through the ages, God's Word. Having pastored churches for almost a decade when he entered seminary (NOBTS, New Orleans) where he earned his doctorate in "New Testament Theology." The trajectory of learning more about and serving the Lord Jesus, he determined to follow throughout his life. One aspect of ministry he did enjoy: Growing a church. He usually moved from a larger church to a smaller one. Then, as that church began to reach those not personally knowing Jesus, it grew until it was as large as, or larger than, the one he left! When he pastored Trinity (N.B.R.), for three consecutive years he baptized more than 100 new Christians each year, growth that led all other churches in his denomination statewide each of those years. During that time, he was invited to speak in several large Southern cities, receiving keys to those cities as well as mayoral proclamations. He loved the ministry of an evangelist, leading revivals from Texas, throught Louisiana and Mississippi, to Alabama and Tennessee, as well as in Honduras, C.A. Home Missions, another exciting ministry area, included his work with the Rev. J.G. Watson, missionary to the French speaking people of Bayous Teche, Chene and Beouf in South Louisiana. During the latter 1960s and '70s, he planted several new churches in Mississippi and South Louisiana. A visionary leader, twice selected to serve on the Louisiana Baptist Executive Committee: when pastoring in Morgan City and at current pastorate in Jackson. In the 1950s, he organized area-wide crusades, achieving collaboration from a variety of Evangelical churches, before such became popular. His vision for Christian schools prior to their popularity, led to the establishment of one of the first in B.R. Where there had been none, he initiated the first high school baccalaureates and ecumenical Thanksgiving services in several towns/cities where pastoring. His pastorates were Creston, Ashland and Readhimer churches in North LA; Bridgedale (N.O.), Morgan City and Berwick in south LA; Sandy Creek (Pride), Parkview, Trinity and Hilltop in the greater Baton Rouge area. Almost 93, he was pastor of Second Baptist in Jackson when he died. Married for 66 years to Wilma Conlay Stewart until her death, he was also predeceased by a son, James Odis Stewart; parents, Mack P. Sr. and Florence B. Stewart; brothers, Clinton and Clifton Stewart; sisters, Arrenia Madden, Susan Voag and Ethel Collinsworth. He is survived by two brothers, Hailey B. and Bobby W.; a sister, Shirley Alderman; two sons and their wives, Lt. Col. (Ret.) Paul and Regina Stewart, and David and Angie Stewart; five grandchildren, seven great- grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts to the "Dr. Mack P. Stewart Jr. Hall of the Prophets Scholarship," estab- lished by family for training pastors, chaplains and missionaries. Gifts are tax deductible and may be sent to the fund at: The Seminary, P.O. Box 3330, Cleveland, TN 37320-3330. Funeral services will be held at Charlet Funeral Home, Zachary, on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Tommy French presiding. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Pallbearers will be the Rev. Arnold Austin, Joseph R. Gerage, Nicholas J. Pilcher, Jim Stewart, Dr. Stephen P. Stewart and Teddy Williams. Honorary pallbearers are Bobby Miscar and Chuck Elbon.

Willis M. "Bill" Daniel
(Died August 13, 2013)

Willis M.

Willis M. "Bill" Daniel, age 84, died on Tuesday, August 13, 2013. He served the parish of West Feliciana for 47 years in law enforcement, receiving his first official commission as sheriff's deputy in 1953 in a parish with dirt roads, isolated farms and the state's not-too-secure maximum-security penitentiary. After serving in the US Army in the Korean conflict, he became the parish's lone road deputy, making $300 a month and using his own personal car. In 1984 he was elected to the first of four terms as sheriff, serving and protecting the public with such honesty and dignity that he won the respect of the entire community, with never a hint of corruption under his administration. He left a department staffed dozens of trained officers with modern vehicles and up-to-date law enforcement tools, 911 crisis line and DARE drug prevention program. His long career was marked by courage and compassion, for he was a man of great stature with an equally large heart. Locals never forgot his facing down a desperate armed escaped Angola inmate in the high school parking lot, but they also recall his standing in the rain directing traffic for funerals or accident scenes with emotion etched upon his face and the raindrops mingling with the tears. The West Feliciana Civic Club named him its Outstanding Citizen in 2000, and he served in many leadership capacities in statewide law-enforcement organizations as well as on the Boards of Directors for the Council on Aging and Audubon Lions Club. Firm and fearless in enforcing the law and protecting the public, he never lost sight of the possibilities for improvement. He also helped to create the first Delta Task Force. Daniel is survived by his wife Vivian, three children, Cecile and husband Lealon, Glenn (who followed his footsteps into law enforcement) and wife Leny and Billie Sue and husband Mark, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brothers George Daniel and Leo Daniel. Pallbearers will be Lealon Castello, Mark Moss, Craig Castello, Stephen Castello, Luke Rheams, and Joe Maryman. Visiting will be Thursday August 15, 2013 from 5pm-8pm at Charlet Funeral Home, Inc., Zachary, LA. Visiting will continue Friday, August 16, 2013, Charlet Funeral Home, Inc. , Zachary, LA at 9am until service at 11am. Burial will be at Star Hill Cemetery in St. Francisville, LA. \
