Ruth Berkelhammer Gollis '40, January 6, 1999, in New Bedford, Mass., at 81. A New Bedford resident for more than 50 years, she leaves two sons, Leonard Gollis and Steven Gollis, a daughter, Margery Strauss, a sister and three grandchildren.
Richard C. Johnson '41, June 6, 1999, in Sunnyvale, Calif., at 81. After teaching philosophy at Harvard for three years, he had a long career as a business executive with the Georgia-Pacific Corporation and with Roseberg Lumber. Surviving are his wife, Geraldine, four sons, two daughters, 13 grandchildren and his friend, Joy Stanton.
Malcolm Remington '57, November 1998, in Massachusetts, at 66. He attended the College after serving with the Marine Corps in Korea. Later he was general manager of operations at Servend Inc. Survivors include his wife, Louise Ann Mullin Remington '58.
Carol Wickeri Castine '60, June 18, 1999, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., at 61. She was employed by Pan-American Airlines, a Wall Street law firm and Exxon Corporation before her marriage to Kenneth Castine. Her husband, two brothers, a sister, two nephews and a niece survive her.
Leon T. Nelson Jr. '60, April 14, 1999, in Boston, Mass., at 61. He was president of the Boston chapter of the NAACP, the Greater Roxbury Chamber of Commerce and Lolech Enterprises, and he served the College on the Alumni Council and as an overseer. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, his daughter, his mother, sister and three nephews.
Robert G. Taitt '60, March 22, 1999, in Alexandria Bay, N.Y., at 61. He worked in advertising sales for newspapers and The Reader's Digest and was a lifelong freelance photographer. He is survived by his wife, Frances, three daughters, his father, a brother, two grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Ellen McCue Taylor '61, June 29, 1999, in Salem, Mass., at 60. She was assistant to Colby's dean of admissions and also was associate dean of students before moving to Massachusetts, where she was active in several volunteer organizations. She leaves her husband, John Taylor, her mother, a sister and a brother.
Patricia E. Wilson '62, May 18, 1998, in Cullowhee, N.C., at 57. She was electronic resources librarian at Western Carolina University's Hunter Library. Previously she worked at Keystone Community College and Frostburg State University. She is survived by two daughters, Kate and Karen Krajeski, her mother and her brother.
George M. Gross Jr. '63, May 1, 1999, in Mendham, N.J., at 62. After many years in real estate, he became director of property management for the General Services Administration and later held various positions in federal and state government. He leaves his wife, Jane, a son and daughter, two sisters and several nieces and nephews.
Alan S. Rhoades '64, April 14, 1999, in Kittery, Maine, at 57. He served in U.S. Naval Intelligence, retiring after 22 years with the rank of lieutenant commander. He also was chairman of the Kittery planning board. Survivors include his wife, Sara Shaw Rhoades '64, his son, Andrew Rhoades '90, his daughter, Abigail Rhoades, a sister, and his nephew, Peter A.W. Aykroyd '00.
