Elmer Buel Bartlett, 88, of Maysville, born Oct. 29, 1919, in Ozark County. Elmer and Gladys were Cemetery in Ozark County on Friday, Feb. 8, after a brief graveside service.

Jerry Lee Daugherty, 66
Feb 7, 2008
Jerry Lee Daugherty, 66, of Chadwick, born Feb. 12, 1941, in Sparta, the son of Earlin Daugherty and Geraldine (Applegate) Daugherty Holt. On Oct. 5, 1957, he was united in marriage to Viola Hull.

Jerry was a loving dad and grandpa who spent many hours hunting and fishing with his kids and grandkids. He especially enjoyed attending his grandkids’ baseball and basketball games and was an avid fan of the Chadwick teams where four of his grandsons played basketball. He always told several fond stories about hunting and fishing trips with longtime friends, Jimmy Workman, Dennis Sherman and Joe Fowler.

Jerry owned and operated Hill Top Lumber Company and for the past few years he drove a school bus for Chadwick school system. He was also an active member of Springfield Benchrest Rifle Club and Past Master of the Sparta Masonic Lodge # 296.

He was preceded in Cemetery with the Rev.. Carnel “Bally” Johnson officiating under the care of Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ozark. Visitation was held from 2 to 4 p.m., with Masonic rites at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, in Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ozark.

Harrison Edward Shipman, 87

Harrison Edward Shipman ("Harry" or "Ship"), Lt. Col. USAF, Ret., 87, born Oct. 23, 1920, in Tarkio, Mo. to Henry T. Shipman and Delpha B. Breshears Shipman. He grew up in Ava, Mo. and graduated Ava High School.

Harry attended Drury College, Springfield, Mo. in 1939, and Bakersfield College in 1940. He graduated from U.S. Army Air Corp Cadet School, Luke Field, Phoenix, Ariz. in 1941. He served his country with distinction as a fighter pilot and achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel at age 24, and first Squadron Commander of the 458th Fighter Squadron. He flew P-51 Mustangs, and among his stations were Panama guarding the Canal Zone and Iwo Jima, escorting bombers and flying fighter missions over Japan. Among his achievements, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with one cluster and Air Medal with three oak clusters and several campaign ribbons and unit citations. Also known as "Ship, " Ship continued his military career in the Reserves and retired in 1980.

Harry met Elizabeth "Betty" Cleator in Tuscon in 1941, while Betty was a senior at the University of Arizona. They kept in touch during World War II and death by his younger brother, Lt. Col. Leonard Shipman; older brother, Bob Shipman and his parents.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Betty, of almost 62 years; son, Jimmy Shipman and wife, Jana, of Richardson; daughter, Jeannie Hammann, of Dallas; granddaughters, Jacy Shipman and Nicole Hammann, both of Dallas; and grandson, Peter Hammann of Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches, Texas.

Celebration of life services: 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. passed away Feb. 8, 2008 at the center.

Sylvia Gray Vogt Freeman was died that same year. Sylvia then grew up in the home of her grandparents, L.P. and Emmaline Vogt of the Vera Cruz and Evans community. On Oct. 7, 1936, she was united in marriage to Raymond Freeman. He preceded her in death of her husband. She was an accomplished seamstress from a very young age, but most of all she enjoyed quilting.

She attended the Evans Church in Missouri and Grandview Baptist Church in Davenport as long as she was able. She enjoyed all the church services offered at Bettendorf Health Care.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce and Lyndon Gheer, of Davenport, Iowa; her sons, Jack and Carolyn Freeman, of Sebring Fla., and Roy Freeman, of East Moline, Ill.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Myrl Cox, of Ava, Pauline Villaneuva and Veria Hughes of Sanger, Calif., and Fern Cantrell of Niangua; and one sister-in-law, Helen Dixon, of Great Bend, Kan.

In addition to her husband, Sylvia was preceded in Interment followed in the Brushy Knob passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5 at Sunset Home. At his side was his wife of 67 years, Gladys C. Bartlett.

Elmer was married in May 1941, in Ava, and spent most of their early years in the Springfield area. They moved to Kansas City in the early 1960s and to Maysville in 1970, where they owned an upholstery business. He was a self-taught fiddle player who was affectionately referred to as “the smiling fiddler.” In his early years, he played in “honky-tonks” to help support his young family. After moving to Maysville, he played most every weekend at various functions in and around the area and won many fiddling contests. He performed weekly at The Wagon Wheel, in Pattonsburg, for eight years, which was broadcast from KMRN radio station in Cameron.

The two loves of his life were his wife, Gladys, and his fiddle. His most popular request was “The Orange Blossom Special.”

He leaves behind his wife, Gladys Bartlett, of Maysville; his three children, a daughter, Audrey Willoughby, and two sons, Gale Bartlett and Curtis Bartlett, and wife Jackie, all of Kansas City; and five grandchildren, Josh Willoughby, Brooke Jameson, Rachel Cauthon, Kristen Wright, and Caroline Storey, all from Kansas City. Also remaining are four of his six sisters, Gladys Keller, of Davenport, Iowa, Leota. McClary, of West Plains, Edith Warrick, of Branson, and Maxine McMillan, of Springfield.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, at Bram Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation was from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial was in Thornfield born and raised, on Friday, Feb. 8, after a brief graveside service. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association or DeKalb County Nutrition Center.

Ellis L. Giffin, 75

Ellis L. Giffin, son of Elmer and Irene (Huffman) Giffin, was died Feb. 10, 2008, at Jenks, Okla.

Ellis graduated from Ava High School and joined the Army after graduation. He served in Korea and worked for the United States Post Office as a rural mail carrier in Wichita, Kan., for 43 years. He took early retirement from the post office in 1990 to help his brother-in-law, Chuck, take care of sister Anna Jo who was dying of cancer.

Ellis got reacquainted with Dorothy Harnden Hunt at a high school reunion in Ava. They were passed away at home on Feb. 10 after a lengthy bout with cancer.

He enjoyed family and friends but especially his grand- and great-grandchildren. He was an active member of Bethany Church in Broken Arrow, Okla.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two brothers, Marvin Giffin, Mansfield, and Norman Giffin, Seymour; a sister, Beverly Freeman, Neosho; one daughter, Cindy Miller, North Newton, Kan.; four great-grandchildren, Cheyene and Greg Frost, Cade Simons and Riley Sharp; and his step family, Mark and Mary Sharp, Justin and Anna Sharp, Brett and Drew Sharp, Kye and Julie Hunt Hudson, and Brad and Aubrey McKelvey Cameron Hunt.

He was preceded in passed away with God and her family at her side on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 after suffering and valiantly fighting esonophilla leukemia for the past six years. She remained gracious and positive and never lost her ability to enjoy her family and friends and find good cheer at every opportunity. Her hope and salvation was in Christ.

On June 10, 1935, Pat was married the love of her life Dave Lewis and to this union three children were death by her father, Paul Osborne and her infant son, David.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dave Lewis; her son Paul Lewis of Ozark; her daughter Teresa Bruns and husband Randy of Nixa; her mother Jenny L. Osborne of Ozark; her sister Jeanette Pidgeon of Prescott, Ariz.; other relatives, several caring friends, and good neighbors.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 19, in Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ozark, with Pastor Dale Brown officiating. Visitation was from 3 p.m. until service time.
