P.E. (Boots) Smith, 74, of Horn Lake, died June 23, 2007 at Germantown Methodist Hospital. He was a member of Colonial Hill Baptist Church, a truck driver with Pacific Motor Transport and a Navy veteran.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on June 26 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery in Hickory Flat. Bro. Don Hardin officiated.

He leaves his wife, Kathryn B. Smith; a daughter, Cindy Gearheart; a brother, Verrell Smith of Olive Branch; and a sister, Erlene Childers of New Albany.

Pallbearers were Jerry Clifton, Gary Bruce, W.C. Bruce, Roberts Childers, Cory Childers and John Monroe.

Billy Wicks Allen

Billy Wicks Allen, 47, of Lamar, died June 22, 2007 at his home. He was a member of Holly Hill Baptist Church, an employee of Coil Master company and a veteran of the National Guard.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on June 24 at Clear Creek Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. Frank Feathers officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements

He leaves his wife, Nancy F. Allen; a son, Billy Wayne Allen of Walnut; a stepson, Justin Brooks of Lamar; two daughters, Tracy Allen of Red Banks, Crystal Turner of Walnut; his parents, Raymond and Minnie Allen of Lamar; two brothers, Roger Allen of Bolivar, Donnie Allen of Lamar; and a sister, Elizabeth Williams of Red Banks.

Eddie Melvin Ashmore

Eddie M. Ashmore, 64, died June 18, 2007 after an extended illness. A native of Madison County, Tenn., he recently retired from Lambuth University as the vice president for business and finance. Prior to his retirement from Lambuth, he also retired from a long career at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. He was an ordained minister and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Jackson, Tenn. He held leadership roles in many professional, community, and service organizations and was the recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award. He was a member of Jackson Rotary Club. Ashmore was a founding member and officer of the International Police Historical Society, and the author of two books: “A Chronicle of Law Enforcement in the South -The History of the Jackson, Tennessee, Police Department” and “Tennessee Lawman - History of the Men and Women Behind the Badge.” He was awarded the Police Department Citizen Certificate of Merit by the Jackson Police Department in 2006.

Services were held at George A. Smith and Sons North Chapel, June 20. The Rev. Bruce A. McMillan of Holly Springs, Mississippi, conducted the service.

He leaves his wife, Jean Moore Ashmore; a step-son, Sean Michael White of Memphis; and a sister-in-law, Janis Moore Greene of Byhalia.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, any memorials be directed to Lambuth University, Jackson, TN; or St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn.

Louis Robert Bruce

Louis Robert Bruce, 48, of Holly Springs, died June 17, 2007 at his home. He was a graduate of Rust College and a self-employed business owner in trucking and busing.

Services were held at 12 noon on June 22 at Asbury United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. Rev. Patrick Phillips officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves two sisters, Pat Bruce Lowe of Birmingham, Ala., Shelia Bruce Renefroe of Memphis, Tenn.; and a brother, Marvin Bruce of Holly Springs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Bob Bruce and Vivian Jackson Bruce.

Pallbearers were Ivory Faulkner, Ronald Harris, Eddie Lucas, Kent Faulkner, Robert Jackson and Darryl Walker.

Nellie M. Hale

Nellie M. Hale, 92, of Mt. Pleasant, died June 21, 2007 at her home. She was the widow of Perry Hale. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on June 22 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Slayden Cemetery. Bishop Odell Mackey officiated.

She leaves her son, Walter Kennedy of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Odessa Hardin Hall

Odessa Hardin Hall, 67, of Red Banks, died June 19, 2007 at her home. She was a member of Union Valley MB Church in Byhalia, a president of the usher board, a church secretary, a graduate of Rust College and a retired teacher with Galena School, Chulahoma Community.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on June 25 at Rust College, Doxey Auditorium. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Rev. Joe L. Richmond officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her husband, Wavie C. Hall; a daughter, Erma Renee Garth of Holly Springs; two sons, Gregory W. Hall of Red Banks, Carl E. Hall of Olive Branch; a brother, Abraham Hardin of Holly Springs; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, Edgar L. Sims.

Pallbearers were Kevin Hall, Leon Hall Jr., Clifton Gipson, Cornell Cunningham Jr., Orndoff Matthews Jr. and Michael Davis. Honorary pallbearers were James Davis, Efrem Davis, George Davis, Eric Waters, Felix Thigpen, Rico Hubbard, Charles Clemons, Joseph Hardin Jr., Tracy Hardin, Anthony Hardin, Terry Moore and Chester E. Watson.

Delma Murphree

Delma Murphree, 94, of Abbeville, died June 23, 2007 in Oxford. She was the widow of Neil Murphree and a member of Abbeville Baptist Church.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on June 26 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Abbeville Cemetery. Bro. Randy Hope officiated.

She leaves several nieces and nephews.

James Alfred Smith

James Alfred Smith, 77, of Holly Springs, died June 23, 2007 at his home. He was a member of the Holly Springs Church of Christ, a mechanic and a U.S. Army veteran of Korea. He was a member of the Jaycees and the Lions Club.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on June 25 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. Kerry Reid and Todd Sanderson officiated.

He leaves his wife, Marie Smith; a daughter, Sandra Wood of Corinth; a sister, Jewell S. Smith of Pratterville, Ala.; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Dustin Wood.
