Mr. Flint M. Mayes

BASSETT, Va. - Mr. Flint Motendee Mayes, 89, of Blackberry Road, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 15, 1908, in Franklin County, Va., he was the husband of Mrs. Laura Bennett Mayes, who survives, and the son of Mr. Benjamin F. Mayes and Mrs. Mary Carter Mayes, both deceased. He was retired from Stanley Furniture after 20 years. He was a member of Blackberry Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Fred Belton Sunday school class.

Survivors other than his wife of Stanleytown Health Care include two daughters, Ms. Dora Curry of Martinsville, Va., and Ms. Rosemary Trenton of Charleston, S.C.; a son, Mr. Rodger Mayes of Burlington; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Blackberry Baptist Church by the Rev. Norman 'Scooter' Simmons, the Rev. Oscar Adams and Mr. Robert Haynes. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will be at Collins Funeral Services from 7 to 8:30 this evening.

Mrs. Dollie Burnette

PITTSBORO - Mrs. Dollie Burnette died Wednesday Dec. 31 1997 at Duke University Medical Center.

Survivors include her husband Mr. Murphy Burnette of the home; two daughters, Ms. Amy B. Lyons of Pittsboro and Ms. Emma F. Nickerson of Graham; a son, Mr. Murphy Burnette Jr. of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Ms. Luzelle Burnette of Hillsborough; 19 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Haw River Baptist Church by the Rev. Junious Jones. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at the church from 7 to 8 this evening.

Jones Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Alonzo F. Duncan

TIMBERLAKE - Mr. Alonzo F. Duncan, 91, of 375 Dun-Mar Road, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, in Durham Regional Hospital after a short illness.

He was the husband of the late Mrs. Gracie O. Duncan, and the son of Mr. John S. Duncan and Mrs. Ollie Snipes Duncan, both deceased.

Survivors include three daughters, Ms. Shelby D. Bass of Burlington, Ms. Gracene D. Clayton and Ms. Elva Anne D. Shaw, both of Roxboro; two sons, Mr. Colon K. Duncan of Roxboro and Mr. Farris A. Duncan of Goldsboro; two sisters, Ms. Ercell D. Miller and Ms. Eunice D. Welch, both of Timberlake; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Person Memorial cemetery by the Rev. Hubert Blown.

The family will be at Brooks and White Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening.

Memorials may be made to the Duke Patient Support Program, Duke University Medical Center, DUMC 3169, Durham, N.C. 27710; or to a charity of choice.

Ms. Rebecca L. Lynch

MEBANE - Ms. Rebecca Lassiter Lynch, 76, formerly of 1055 Airport Road, Apt. 29, West Hampton Apartments, died at 5:20 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

Born Oct. 10, 1921, in Princess Anne County, Va., she was the daughter of Mr. Samuel B. Lassiter and Mrs. Vera Wray Lassiter, both deceased. Until retirement, she was a member of the Professional Nurses Registry of Winston-Salem Inc. and was a private-duty licensed practical nurse in Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Burlington and Mebane. She was a staff member of Alamance County Hospital and a dental assistant in Burlington and Mebane for 35 years. She was a past member of the National and North Carolina Nurses Associations. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mebane.

Survivors include two sons, Mr. Randy R. Lynch of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Mr. Timothy P. Lynch of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Eleene L. Holt of Mebane; one brother, Mr. David Ray Lassiter of Greenville, S.C.; and one grandchild.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oakwood cemetery in Mebane by Dr. Terry Farmer, pastor of First Baptist Church of Mebane.

The family will be at the home of the sister, Mrs. Eleene L. Holt, 403 Circle Drive, Mebane.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 301 N. Third St., Mebane, N.C. 27302.

McClure Funeral Home in Mebane is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ollie M. Harris

WHITSETT - Mrs. Ollie Lea Mapp Harris, 75, of 7256 Greeson Road, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a critical illness of three days.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Henry Harris, and the daughter of Mr. John Lea Sr. and Mrs. Mary Simpson Lea. She was a retired beautician. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Elon College, and was a former member of the choir, Sunday school and Missionary Department.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Brenda M. Smith of the home and Mrs. Shirley Williams of Mount Vernon, N.Y.; five sons, Mr. John Mapp, Mr. James Mapp, Mr. Dwight Mapp and Mr. Bernard Harris, all of Greensboro, and Mr. Charles Mapp of Gibsonville; two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Watlington of Norfolk, Va., and Mrs. Helen Mitchell of Washington, D.C.; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church of Elon College by the Rev. Clarence Wall, pastor. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.

The family will be at the church from 1 to 2 Sunday afternoon.

Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Judith M. Church

GIBSONVILLE - Mrs. Judith Mitton Church, 52, of 510 Meadow St., died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, at her home.

A native of Clinton, Mass., she was the wife of Mr. Quentin D. Church, who survives, and the son of Mr. Walter R. Mitten Sr. and Mrs. Ethel Harris Mitten, both deceased. She was a member of Friedens Lutheran Church. She was a member of Mother of Twins and a former Cub Scout leader.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include two sons, Mr. James R. Church and Mr. John R. Church, both of the home; two daughters, Ms. Elizabeth Huskey and Ms. Lisa Hoosier, both of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Walter Mitton Jr. of Fayetteville and Mr. Leslie Mitton of Lockport, N.Y.; two sisters, Ms. Roberta Gillis of Barker, N.Y., and Ms. Linda Allen of Medina, N.Y.; two stepbrothers; two stepsisters; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. David N. Mitton.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Friedens Lutheran Church by the Rev. Richard Rhodes, pastor. The body will be place in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Friedens Church cemetery.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and other times at the home.

Mr. William Patterson

LIBERTY - Mr. William 'Billy' Patterson of 103 S. Murphy St., died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Lewis Grove Holiness Church. Burial will be in Rock Creek Church cemetery.

The family will be at the church 30 minutes before the service.

Kimes Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bobby L. Martin

HIGH POINT - Mr. Bobby Lewis Martin, 64, of 2402 Wilkes St., died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at his home.

A native of Pittsylvania County, Va., he was the son of Mr. John Perry Martin and Mrs. Mertie Bell Williams Martin, both deceased. He was a textile employee.

Survivors include a son, Mr. Sonny James Martin of High Point; two daughters, Mrs. Teresa Lynn Miller of Trinity and Miss Misty Arlene Martin of Thomasville; four brothers, Mr. Bobby Martin and Mr. Donnie Martin, both of Greensboro, Mr. James Martin of New Jersey and Mr. John Martin of Browns Summit; three sisters, Mrs. Linda Hamby and Mrs. Blair Martin, both of Greensboro, and Ms. Pam Martin of Anchorage, Alaska; and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Gibsonville City cemetery by the Rev. James Sizemore, pastor of Community Baptist Church of Thomasville.

The family will be at Bartlett Funeral Home in Gibsonville from 7 to 9 this evening.

A'Dajah Kayia Ross

BURLINGTON - A'Dajah Kayia Ross, seven-month-old daughter of Ms. Kanika Ross of 704 Mitchell St., died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after a sudden illness. A native of Orange County, she is survived by her grandmother, Ms. Deborah Ross of Burlington, grandfather, Mr. Elwood Tune of Albany, N.Y.; great-grandmother, Mrs. Doris Watkins Ross of Burlington; great-grandfather, Mr. Lacy Ross of Hillsborough.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home Chapel by Bishop Harry L. Cohen. Burial will be in the Deep Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation will be at the Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home from 1 to 2 Saturday afternoon, prior to the funeral.

Mr. Samuel Finley Sr.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Samuel Gwyn Finley Sr., 91, a resident of Twin Lakes Center, died at 3 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 1998, at home after several years of failing health.

A native of Spartanburg, S.C., he was the husband of Mrs. Ena Lambeth Finley, who survives, and the son of Mr. Samuel Gwyn Finley and Mrs. Ruth Cofield Finley, both deceased. He was a retired chemist with Kayser Roth Hosiery. He was a former member of the Alamance Civitan Club and a member of Alamance Lutheran Church, the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and a former member of the church council.

Survivors other than his wife of Twin Lakes Center include two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Finley Wakefield of Hickory and Mrs. Betty Finley Schwartz of Wilton, Conn.; one son, Mr. Samuel Gwyn Finley Jr. of Burlington; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Atwater and Miss Clementina Finley, both of Charleston, S.C.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ruth Finley Weiterer.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Alamance Lutheran Church by the Rev. James Lockley, pastor. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the Guest House at the Twin Lakes Center.

Memorials may be made to Alamance Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 250, Alamance, N.C. 27201, or to a charity of choice.

Mrs. Connie B. Caudle

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Connie Burwell Caudle, 85, of 4174 Lytchfield Court, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at Brookridge Retirement Community.

She was the wife of Mr. Ray Ellis Caudle, who died in 1993. She spent her early life in Stokes County, moving to Winston-Salem in 1930. She was employed by P.H. Hanes Knitting, and retired from Royal Cake Co. after 10 years of service. She was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Rebecca Caudle of Raleigh; a son, Mr. C. Ray Caudle of Pawley's Island, S.C.; three sisters, Ms. Inez McGee and Ms. Johnsie Hall, both of King, and Ms. Edith Roberts of Clemmons; five brothers, Mr. Hughes Burwell and Mr. Joe Burwell, both of Burlington, Mr. Tom Burwell of Thomasville, Mr. John Burwell of King, and Mr. Norman Burwell of Lewisville; and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapel by Dr. Cecil Cave. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park.

The family will be at the funeral home from 1 to 2 this afternoon, prior to the funeral.

Memorials may be made to Mineral Springs Baptist Church, 3733 Ogburn Ave., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27105.
