Mr. James R. Hucks

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. James Ray Hucks, 53, of 200 Roswell Drive, died at his home Wednesday evening, Dec. 31, 1997.

Born in Burlington Aug. 10, 1944, he was the husband of Mrs. Linda Smith Hucks, who survives, and the son of Mr. Donald Thomas Hucks and Mrs. Gladys Drake Hucks, both deceased. He graduated from Williams High School and Burlington Business College. He had lived in Kernersville for the past 25 years, and was employed for 23 years by BE Aerospace. He was a member of Oaklawn Baptist Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Mr. Stephen James Hucks and Mr. Jeffrey Shaun Hucks, both of the home; one brother, Mr. Jack Hucks of Spartanburg, S.C.; and one sister, Ms. Barbara Dameron of Burlington.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oaklawn Baptist Church by the Rev. Kevin Kilberth. Burial will be in Pine Hill cemetery in Burlington.

The family will be at Voglers Kernersville Chapel from 7 to 9 this evening.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Mrs. Ruth V. Baynes

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Ruth V. Baynes of 2459 Willie Pace Road, died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Ervin Baynes, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Roy Vanhook and Mrs. Sally B. Fuller Vanhook, both deceased. She was retired from Kayser-Roth. She was a member of Sweet Gum Grove Baptist Church, where she was mother of the church, president of the Missionary Circle and treasurer of the choir.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include a son, Mr. Jiles Baynes of Killeen, Texas; a daughter, Mrs. Loretta Brown of Greensboro; three brothers, the Rev. Robert Vanhook of Green Level, Mr. Charlie Vanhook of Burlington and Mr. Thomas Vanhook of Mebane; a sister, Mrs. Annis Wiley of Burlington; and seven grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sweet Gum Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Clarence Hariston, the Rev. Raney Enoch and the Rev. William Seagrove. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Sharpe Memorial Chapel from 7 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Robert Boyd Sr.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Robert W. 'Bob' Boyd Sr., 76, of 501 Neese Court died at 4:40 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

A native of Washington, N.C., he was the husband of Mrs. Trudy Donohue Boyd, who survives, and the son of Mr. George Bonner Boyd and Mrs. Margaret McLean Boyd Miller, both deceased. He was president of Boyd Henry Financial Services and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Burlington Life Underwriters Association and was a former member of the Burlington Kiwanis Club. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Judy Boyd Thompson of Charlottesville, Va.; two sons, Mr. Robert W. Boyd Jr. of Burlington and Mr. Ken Boyd of Charlottesville; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted at noon Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by the Rev. Terence Pescatore, O.F.M. Conv. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 9 this evening, with a Christian Wake Service at 8 p.m. At other times the family will be at the home.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 2364, Burlington, N.C. 27216.

Mr. Harvey J. Smith

BURLINGTON - Mr. Harvey Jordan Smith, 92, of Twin Lakes Center died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997, at his home.

A native of Pickens County, S.C., he was the husband of Mrs. Nona Bivens Smith, who survives. He was a former resident of Danville, Va., and moved to Greensboro in 1948. He was the founder of Modern Metal Products. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, where he received the George F. Hixon Fellow Award, was a former member of the Greensboro Human Relations Committee and was a member of the Board of Trustees of Bennett College for 15 years. He was past president of the United Methodist Foundation. After retiring from Modern Metal Products, he became a real-estate broker. He joined Grace United Methodist Church in 1951, where he was the former chairman of the Vision 2000 Campaign, administrative board, stewardship committee and the finance committee, was on the Bishop's Lay Advisory Council and headed several drives and campaigns for the church.

Survivors other than his wife of Burlington include a daughter, Mrs. Jim (Helen Smith) Irvin of Greensboro; two sons, Mr. Harvey J. Smith Jr. and Mr. Eugene E. Smith, both of Greensboro; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church by the Rev. Thomas Latimer. Burial will be in Westminster Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, Millikan Fund, 438 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, N.C. 27401; or to the Alzheimer's Association, Piedmont Triad N.C. Chapter, 200 N. Cherry St., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101.

Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Street Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mamie Fincannon

REIDSVILLE - Mrs. Mamie Bishop Fincannon, 76, formerly of 607 East St., died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997, at Annie Penn Hospital.

A native of Henry County, Va., she was the wife of the late Mr. David H. Fincannon, and the daughter of Mr. John Bishop and Mrs. Lizzie Barker Bishop, both deceased. She had lived in Reidsville most of her life. She was a homemaker and Baptist.

Survivors include a son, Mr. Charles William Denny of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Ms. Shirley Denny Pruitt of Reidsville and Ms. Gloria Jean Frick of Burlington; a sister, Ms. Roxie Little of Reidsville; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, and four grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reidlawn Cemetery.

The family will be at Citty Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening.

Mr. Oscar J. Wooten

CAMERON - Mr. Oscar Junior Wooten, 75, of 28 Wooten Lane died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997, at his home.

A native of Hoke County, he was a U.S. Army veteran and was a certified pipe welder.

Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Droxie Hennings and Ms. Janet Simpson, both of Vass; two brothers, Mr. Robert Wooten of Greensboro and Mr. Elvin Wooten of Uniontown, Pa.; two sisters, Ms. Esther Stevens of Greensboro and Ms. Nancy Giles of Cameron; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pleasant United Church of Christ by the Rev. George Brice and the Rev. Dr. Winfred Bray. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home in Sanford from 6 to 8 this evening.

Mr. Joe A. Watlington

GIBSONVILLE - Mr. Joe Alex Watlington of 4221 Gilliam Church Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Ella Williams Watlington, who survives. He was a lifetime resident of Alamance County and was a retired farmer. He attended High Rock Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a foster daughter, Ms. Toni Michelle Allen of Durham; a foster son, Mr. Kerby L. Allen of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Lucy W. Totten of Burlington and Mrs. Memmer W. White of Saxapahaw; and a brother, Mr. Onislo Watlington of Burlington.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at High Rock Missionary Baptist Church by Dr. Richard W. Styles. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Johnson and Sons Funeral Home in Reidsville from 7 to 7:30 this evening.

Mrs. Madeline Smith

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Madeline Sykes Smith, 86, of American Transitional Care, died at 3:55 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, at her home after a long illness.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Samuel D. Smith, and the daughter of Mr. Samuel M. Sykes and Mrs. Ida Cook Sykes, both deceased. She was retired from Cannon Mills and was a member of First Baptist Church of Haw River.

Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Barbara S. Smith of Charlotte; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Linwood cemetery by the Rev. James L. Rosser, pastor of Haw River Christian Church.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Mrs. Dorothy Durham

HILLSBOROUGH - Mrs. Dorothy Horne Durham, 70, of Orange County, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 1997, at her home after a short illness.

A lifelong resident of Orange County, she was the wife of Mr. Carl Edward Durham, who died in 1996, and the daughter of Mrs. Rosetta Collins Lane, who survives, and the late Mr. Clarence Lane. She was a retired employee of Efland Hosiery Mill and was an active member of the Hillsborough Church of God.

Survivors other than her mother include a son, Mr. Jerry C. Horne of Hillsborough; a brother, Mr. Bobby Lane of Hillsborough; four sisters, Ms. Geraldine Irby of Hillsborough, Ms. Betty Ruth Hamlett of Mebane, Ms. Jo Ann Burton of Efland and Ms. Linda Kay Young of Burlington; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hillsborough Church of God by the Rev. James Boyd and the Rev. A.B. Hamm. Burial will be in Hillsborough Town Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Triangle Hospice, 1804 Martin Luther King Parkway, Suite 112, Durham, N.C. 27707.

The family will be at Clements Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Russell Jacobs

MEBANE - Mr. Russell Jacobs, 47, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Born June 4, 1950, he was the son of Mr. Jim Henry Jacobs, who survives, and the late Mrs. Katie Swan Jacobs.

Survivors other than his father of Cedar Grove include three sisters, Ms. Frances Torain and Ms. Jean Smith, both of Hillsborough, and Ms. Dolly Bumpass of Durham; eight brothers, Mr. Vance Jacobs, Mr. Cornell Jacobs, Mr. Essell Jacobs, Mr. Wadell Jacobs and Mr. Dennis Jacobs, all of Cedar Grove, Mr. Leroy Jacobs and Mr. Kennis Jacobs, both of Hillsborough.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chavis-Parker Funeral Home in Hillsborough.

The family will be at the funeral home one hour before the service.

Ms. Margie P. Dellinger

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Ms. Margie Parrish Dellinger, 68, of 513 Landing St., died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, at White Oak Manor Kings Mountain.

A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Mr. Robert Parrish and Mrs. Etta Harmon Parrish, both deceased. She was a retired textile employee and was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Kings Mountain.

Survivors include a son, Mr. James 'Jimmy' Edgar Dellinger Jr. of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Ms. Rebecca 'Becky' Dellinger of Charlotte and Ms. Doris Voiselle of Greenwood, S.C.; a brother, Mr. Clyde Parrish of Kings Mountain; four sisters, Ms. Cleo Crenshaw of Graham, Ms. Nelline Cable of Burlington, Ms. Orangel McDaniels and Ms. Margaret Dellinger, both of Kings Mountain; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Wednesday at Central United Methodist Church by the Rev. Harold Schwantes. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights, Shelby, N.C. 28150.

Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain was in charge of arrangements.
