Mr. Clem G. Tate

ARCHDALE - Mr. Clem Gwynn Tate, 85, of 6178 Ashbrook Circle, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 16, 1997, at High Point Regional Hospital.

Born Jan. 26, 1912, in Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Jean Reynolds Tate, who survives, the late Mrs. Alene Clark Tate and Mrs. Alice Nance Tate, who died in 1991. He was the son of Mr. Alexander Tate and Mrs. Dora Gwynn Tate, both deceased. He was the retired owner of C.G. Tate Plastics Inc. and attended Bales Memorial Wesleyan Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Larry Tate of Thomasville; a daughter, Ms. Shirley Wilson of Greensboro; two brothers, Mr. Millard Tate and Mr. Jack Tate, both of Burlington; three sisters, Miss Mae Tate, Miss Irene Tate and Mrs. Rachel Hunter, all of Burlington; 20 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Jimmy Tate Sr., who died in 1993.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Bales Memorial Wesleyan Church by the Rev. Wesley Brown and the Rev. Willard Kiser. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park in Thomasville.

The family will be at Cumby Funeral Home in Archdale from 7 to 8:30 this evening.

Memorials may be made to the Family Life Center of Bales Memorial Wesleyan Church, 1000 Bales Chapel Road, Jamestown, N.C. 27282.

Mrs. Rosa S. Hayes

GRAHAM - Mrs. Rosa Self Small Hayes, 89, formerly of East Harden Street, died at 1:05 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of Mr. Robert Lee Self and Mrs. Lula Summers Self, both deceased. She was a retired employee of Kayser-Roth Corp. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elon College, where she was a member of the Happy Morning Club.

Survivors include two sons, Mr. Darrell Small and Mr. Bennett Small, both of Burlington; one sister, Mrs. William (Vera) Ingle of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Norman Self of Clarkston, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Grace Mooneyham, Mrs. Esther Blanchard and Mrs. Helen Butler; and a brother, Mr. Robert L. Self Jr.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Randy Innes, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Elon College. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home of a son, Mr. Darrell Small, 311 Trail Eight, Burlington.

Mrs. Ruth V. Baynes

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Ruth V. Baynes of 2459 Willie Pace Road, died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Ervin Baynes, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Roy Vanhook and Mrs. Sally B. Fuller Vanhook, both deceased. She was retired from Kayser-Roth.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include a son, Mr. Jiles Baynes of Killeen, Texas; a daughter, Mrs. Loretta Brown of Greensboro; three brothers, the Rev. Robert Vanhook of Green Level, Mr. Charlie Vanhook of Burlington and Mr. Thomas Vanhook of Mebane; a sister, Mrs. Annis Wiley of Burlington; and seven grandchildren.

Sharpe Funeral Home in Burlington is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

Mr. Alphonso S. Johnson

MEBANE - Mr. Alphonso S. Johnson of 213 West St., died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Helen Marie Johnson, who survives, and the son of Mr. Charlie Johnson and Mrs. Eursula Scott Johnson, both deceased. He was retired from Walter Kidde Co.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a son, Mr. Alphonso Johnson Jr. of the home; two daughters, Miss Deborah C. Johnson of Oakland, Calif., and Master Sgt. Gail Renee Johnson with the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Germany; a brother, Mr. Joe Louis Johnson of Mebane; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Holt and Mrs. Eunice Tapp, both of Mebane; and two grandchildren.

Sharpe Funeral Home in Burlington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ruth B. Sykes

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Ruth Bates Sykes, 69, of 2627 Anthony Road died at 2:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, at Duke University Medical Center after two years of failing health, three weeks critical.

A native of Halifax County, Va., she was the wife of the late Mr. James W. Sykes, and the daughter of Mr. George Lee Bates and Mrs. Bessie Hancock Bates, both deceased. She retired after 38 years as a Southern Bell telephone operator. She was a member of the Burlington Assembly of God.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Janie B. Eanes of Graham and a brother, Mr. Louis Bates of Oklahoma.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by Dr. Howard Thompson, pastor of Burlington Assembly of God. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at the home.

Rev. William Young Sr.

GIBSONVILLE - The Rev. William Saunders Young Sr., 93, of 616 Ellen Drive, died at 10:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, at Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center after five years of failing health, five days critical.

A native of Danville, Va., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Donnie Dixon Young, and Mrs. Ruth L. Young, who survives. He was the son of Mr. William Andrew Young and Mrs. Lelia Hodnett Young, both deceased. He was a retired Baptist minister and was the founder of the Eastern North Carolina Baptist Fellowship. He was a member of Johnson Baptist Church in Browns Summit.

Survivors other than his wife of Browns Summit include four daughters, Mrs. Cathy Y. McDaniel of McLeansville, Mrs. Carol Y. Massey of Mebane, Mrs. Betty Y. Bailey of Greensboro and Mrs. Donna Y. Powell of Burlington; five sons, Mr. William S. 'Buddy' Young Jr. of Graham, Mr. Richard V. Young of Mebane, Mr. Glenn D. Young and Jerry E. Young, both of Gibsonville, and Mr. Millard 'Henry' Young of Burlington; four sisters, Mrs. Helen Wrenn, Mrs. Deloris Flemming, Mrs. Nellie Hamm and Mrs. Louise Wrenn, all of Burlington; 24 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Mary Y. Snow.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Randy Hobbs, the Rev. Raymond Webb and the Rev. James Pruitt. Burial will be in Gibsonville Town Cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Laura M. Midgett

WAVES - Mrs. Laura Kay Maness Midgett, 58, died Friday, Dec. 12, 1997, at an Outer Banks medical facility.

A native of Greensboro, she was the wife of the late Mr. Dennis Lannon Midgett Sr., and the daughter of the late Ms. Bertha Mae Maness. She was the postmaster for the Wanchese Post Office and was a member of Fairhaven United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Laura Denise Midgett of Waves and Ms. Kaye Wrenn Griffin of Virginia Beach, Va.; a son, Mr. Dennis Lannon Midgett Jr. of Waves; a sister, Ms. Faye Gaulden of Burlington; and seven grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Monday at Fairhaven United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ray Warren, the Rev. John Carlock and the Rev. Berry Taylor. Burial was in the family cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Fairhaven United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 129, Avon, N.C. 27915; or to Salvo Assembly of God, P.O. Box 84, Salvo, N.C. 27972.

Twiford's Colony Chapel in Manteo was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ruth B. Sykes

Mrs. Edna B. Hensley

LAKELAND, Fla. - Mrs. Edna Bazemore Hensley, 78, formerly of Burlington, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997, at Lakeland Florida Hospital.

A native of Person County, she worked in shoe sales for Sellars Department Store in Burlington for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Becky Sims of Winter Haven, Fla.

A memorial service was held Sunday in Winter Haven.

Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington provided local information.

Mrs. Rena Underwood

ELON COLLEGE - Mrs. Rena Walker Underwood, 81, of 1390 Underwood Road, died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, at her home.

A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Russell E. Underwood, and the daughter of Mr. George Weldon Walker and Mrs. Annie Sartin Walker, both deceased. She was a homemaker and lived most of her life in the Cherry Grove/Camp Springs Community. She was a member of Camp Springs United Methodist Church, where she was a former member of the Women's Society.

Survivors include two sons, Mr. Donald Troxler and Mr. Tommy Underwood, both of Elon College; three daughters, Ms. Norma Simmons and Ms. Mary Simmons, both of Elon College and Ms. Betty Blanchard of Burlington; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Shelby Renshaw of High Point; four brothers, Mr. G.W. Walker Jr. and Mr. Samuel Walker, both of Reidsville, Mr. Homer B. Walker of Gibsonville and Mr. Mitchell Walker of Ruffin; a sister, Ms. Mildred Combs of Gibsonville; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, Mr. Cleo Underwood; and one grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Camp Springs United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charlie Litzenberger. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Citty Funeral Home in Reidsville from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Evelyn Dunham

SHELBY - Mrs. Evelyn Love Dunham, 79, of 123 E. Debbie Drive died Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, at the Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.

Mr. Willard Inman

GRAHAM - Mr. Willard Inman, 65, of 214 Maple St., died at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A native of Haywood County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mattie Cates Inman. He was employed by Ramada Inn.

McClure Funeral Home in Graham is in charge of arrangements which are incomplete.
