Mrs. Rachel S. Smith

GRAHAM - Mrs. Rachel Sykes Smith, 81, of 2301-B John Thompson Road, died at 5:10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center after a one-day illness.

A native of Orange County, she was the wife of Mr. John H. Smith, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Steve B. Sykes and Mrs. Robena Jones Sykes, both deceased. She was retired from Sellars Manufacturing Co., and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Ann Braxton of Chapel Hill; two sons, Mr. Bryant H. Smith of Lorain, Ohio, and Mr. Clinton W. Smith of Graham; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Dellie S. Ray and a brother, Mr. Roland 'Bo' Sykes.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Salem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Benjamin Kelly, pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at the McClure Funeral Home in Graham this evening from 7 to 9, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Salem United Methodist Church or to the Salem United Methodist Memorial Association, 4471 Salem Church Road, Haw River, N.C. 27258.

Mr. Everett B. Pegg

GRAHAM - Mr. Everett Baine Pegg, 94, of 308 Mill St., died at 2:45 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, at Alamance Health Care Center.

Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

Mrs. Emma S. Wellons

ALAMANCE - Mrs. Emma S. Wellons, 71, of 2957 Elder Lane, died at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after two years of failing health.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Charles Wesley Wellons Sr., and the daughter of Mr. Johnnie Brackett Sharpe and Mrs. Bessie Ellen May Sharpe, both deceased. She was a retired hosiery employee and was a member of Trinity Worship Center.

Survivors include three sons, Mr. Wesley Wellons Jr. of Alamance, Mr. Gene Wellons of Snow Camp and Mr. Barry Wellons of Elon College; three sisters, Mrs. Maggie Lowe of Alamance, Mrs. Mary Shoffner of Burlington and Miss Gloria Sharpe of White Lake; a brother, Mr. Haskell Sharpe of White Lake; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Miss Blondie Sharpe and Miss Betty Lou Sharpe.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Worship Center by the Rev. Darrell Cox, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Worship Center, 3157 S. Church St., Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Mrs. Edna J. Smith

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Edna Jobe Smith, 82, died at 3:20 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at Hospice Home of Burlington, after an illness of six months.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Robert Daniel 'Dan' Smith, and the daughter of Mr. Robert Henry Jobe and Mrs. Flora Workman Jobe, both deceased. She was a retired secretary for an insurance company. She was a member of Northside Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, director of the Women's Missionary Union, a deacon. She received a certificate of honor for Life Deacon, served and held several offices in the Mount Zion Baptist Association and State Baptist Convention.

Survivors include a niece and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Bruce Brown, pastor of Northside Baptist Church, and Dr. Howard Silver. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 5 to 7 this evening.

Memorials may be made to the Hospice Home of Burlington, 618 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215; or to Northside Baptist Church, 513 Homewood Ave., Burlington, N.C. 27217.

Mr. Champ W. Lewis

GRAHAM - Mr. Champ Willard Lewis, 82, of 2045 Neese Drive, died at 3:10 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham after three years of failing health and a critical illness of two weeks.

A native of Montgomery County, he was the husband of Mrs. Attrice Compton Lewis, who survives, and the son of Mr. George Thomas Lewis and Mrs. Annie Bell Yarbrough, both deceased. He was a retired Buick dealer in Morehead City. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and a member of the American Legion. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Graham.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Mr. James W. Lewis of St. Mary's, Ga., and Mr. David L. Lewis of Rockwell; one sister, Mrs. Ila Diffie of Richmond, Va.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Alamance Memorial Park by the Rev. Paul Lane, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Graham.

The body will remain at Lowe Funeral Home until taken to the cemetery for the service.

The family will be at the home.

Memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans, c/o Mr. Arnold Beckom, Commander, 1304 Apple St. Ext., Burlington, N.C. 27217.

Mr. Jacob R. Smith

FAYETTEVILLE - Mr. Jacob Ralph Smith, 82, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at Carrolton of Fayetteville nursing home.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary L. Surles of Raleigh; two daughters, Ms. Noel Jarvis of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Ms. Donna Hopkins of Charlotte; two sisters, Ms. Virginia Smith and Ms. Julia Rudd, both of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Jimmy Smith of Burlington; three grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and six great-step grandchildren.

The graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lafayette Memorial Park by the Rev. T.J. Fulk.

Rogers and Breece Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Stella F. Carden

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Stella Mae Foust Carden, 91, of 607 Columbia Ave., died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center, after several years of failing health, five days critical.

Lowe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

Mrs. Mable W. Holt

MEBANE - Mrs. Mable Williams Holt, 94, of 500 S. Eighth St., died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, after a long illness.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Gus Holt, and the daughter of Mr. George Williams and Mrs. Ada Fuller Williams, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of the Ladies Social Club of Mebane. She was a member of Mebane First Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Missionary Circle, Pastor's Aides, former Sunday school teacher, former Senior Choir member and was former church clerk.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mebane First Baptist Church by the Rev. John Davis, pastor. Burial will be in Mebane Community Cemetery.

The family will be at Sharpe Memorial Chapel from 6 to 7 Saturday evening, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Rogers, 4559 S. Jim Minor Road, Haw River.

Mrs. Willa W. Hood

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Willa Walker Hood, formerly of Canterbury Drive, died at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at Belmont Terrace Nursing Home in Bramerton, Wash.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Brodie E. Hood, and the daughter of Mr. Benjamin Moore Walker and Mrs. Bessie McKay Walker, both deceased. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Burlington and the Dorcas Sunday school class.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Kay H. Gardner of Bremerton; a sister, Mrs. C. Almon (Bessie) McIver of Burlington; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Brodie Earl Hood Jr.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Alamance Memorial Park by Dr. Craig McMahan, pastor of First Baptist Church of Burlington.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 4 to 5 Sunday afternoon, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Bobby G. Staley

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Bobby Garwood Staley, 59, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at his home.

A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Ms. Martha Jane Staley, who survives.

Survivors other than his mother of Charlotte include two daughters, Ms. Rhonda Caldwell of La Grande, Ore., and Ms. Teresa Ball of Wichita Falls, Texas; a brother, Mr. Thomas Staley of Charlotte; six grandchildren; and other relatives in Alamance County.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Sunset Memory Gardens.

Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ermina M. Norton

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Ermina McCauley Norton, 74, of 811 North Ave., died at 7:25 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after one year of failing health, one week critical.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. John Elmer Norton, and the daughter of Mr. Albert Mack McCauley and Mrs. Allie Hancock McCauley, both deceased. She was semi-retired from Carolina Koury Hosiery Mill and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Mr. John E. Norton Jr. and Mr. Allen D. Norton, both of Graham; a sister, Mrs. Frances Smith of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Clifford McCauley of Elon College; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Linda Norton Tickle.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Graham by the Rev. David Jackson, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 this evening.

Mrs. Catherine Halbert

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Catherine 'Kay' Burns Halbert, 88, of 3760 Seabury Court, formerly of Tarleton Avenue, died at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, at her home.

A native of Charles Town, W.Va., she was the wife of the late Mr. William S. Halbert, and the daughter of Mr. John Caleb Burns and Mrs. Lula Yoe Burns, both deceased. She was a graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Va., where she earned Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Gamma Mu, and was a graduate of Katherine Gibbs School of New York. She was listed in the 'Personalities of the South' publication for three consecutive years.

She served as volunteer chairwoman for the Alamance County Cancer Screening Center at the Duke University Medical Center. She was the first County Commander and past secretary and board member for the Alamance Unit of the American Cancer Society. She received a plaque for 20 years of service to the American Cancer Society and the 'Sword of Hope' award for Outstanding Volunteer Service to the Cancer Society in 1983.

She was past president and secretary of the Burlington Business and Professional Women's Club and the Alamance County Service League. She was past president of the Alamance Branch of the American Association of University Women and past secretary and treasurer of the Alamance Executive Club. She was past second vice president and recording secretary of the Burlington Woman's Club and past president of the Wednesday Study Club. She retired from Elon College after 25 years of service and she was awarded the Elon Medallion, the most prestigious award given by Elon College. She was a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church, where she served as the Secretary of the Women of the Church.

Survivors include nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at Macedonia Lutheran Church by Sister Cathy Fanslau, chaplain of Twin Lakes Center, and Dr. Jo Watts Williams.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Edgehill cemetery in Charles Town.

The family will be in the parlor of Macedonia Lutheran Church following the memorial service.

Memorials may be made to Elon College Scholarship Fund, 2600 Campus Box, Elon College, N.C. 27244; or to the Alamance Unit of the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 2364, 422 S. Spring St., Burlington, N.C. 27215.
