DRAYTON, STELLA SPOONER

A small-statured woman with a quick wit and a heart full of love and determination, Stella Bernice Spooner Drayton, a New Yorker most of her life, died March 9, 2010 at the age of 95. The widow of Julian Drayton and a Spring Valley homeowner, she succumbed after complications from a stroke. If big things come in small packages, "Stella," "Mama," "Gram," "Mrs Drayton" was an explosion of energy, having earned her B.A. and R.N. degrees for Nursing from Hunter College. For many years, she worked at Bronx Lebanon Hospital as an R.N. She even worked at the Finkelstein Memorial Library in Spring Valley until her passing. Born February 4, 1915 in Barbados, Stella used to say, "I can't just sit around, I gotta get out of that house and be around people." She lived nine generations - having seen a world change from segregation in the '60s to the election of the first African-American U.S. president in 2008 (Stella was awake 4:30 A.M. Election Day, as she had been for so many previous political polls, to count votes). She was a living history, and always first to show pride in the personal and educational accomplishments of her friends and family. "You've done well," she would say. Never stingy with her affection during hour-long telephone conversations, ending them with "I love you, too, baby." Her strong Christian convictions and membership at Grace Baptist Church, Nanuet, NY, with dedication to its Women's Bible Study, and Senior Heirs, gave her the strength to live a long life. She is survived by a daughter, Shirley D. Brindle; four granddaughters, Darlene B. Waties (David), Corinne M. Goldsmith; Lisa Brindle Talbot (David) and Jeanine C. Goldsmith; four greatgrandchildren, Danielle R. Waties, Stephanie M Waties, Nia L. Frazier and Gavin B. Talbot; a son-in-law, Robert Goldsmith; several nieces and nephews; preceded in death by a daughter, Leverne D. Goldsmith; and a sonin-law, Dr. Hill W. Brindle. Viewing will be held Monday, March 15 from 9-11AM with services to follow at Grace Baptist Church, 20 Demarest Avenue, Nanuet, N.Y. Burial will be held at Brick Church, Spring Valley, In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Rockland Negro Scholarship Fund (of which Stella was a member) at PO Box 143, Nanuet, NY 10954. With spring almost here, and with the immediate love of his wife and children, Charles Robert (Carmine) Gaito passed on from this world, just after midnight, March 13, 2010. Charlie's life of eighty-six years was full and beautiful and makes for so many stories. April 10, 1923 is when Charlie's story began, in Mt. Vernon, New York. He found himself as a young man serving in WWII in the 15th Air Force Army Air Corps in the 463rd Squadron as a Staff Sergeant Ordinance Specialist before working and retiring from Bendix Corporation after 30 years as a senior project engineer, where he was instrumental in developing several programs for military and conmmercial customers. And we, his family, remain, really, his best stories, his best ideas, and his happiest heart. Always in ours...remember Charlie Gaito well; share his story as you will. Charlie is the beloved husband of Sue Gaito, loving father of Charles, Jr. and Jean Gaito, Gloria Gaito, Joanne and Al Daloisio, Jr., loving step-father of Shirley and Steven Stewart, Susan and Herb Schmaler, Joseph and Nancy LaJeunesse, and the late Elizabeth Dutka.
