GOETZ, FR. DONATUS
The Capuchin Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Mary (New York-New England) mourn the passing of their beloved brother Father Donatus Goetz who died on Tuesday, January 16, 2007. Francis Xavier Goetz was born to Charles Francis Goetz (father) and Ann Marie McDermott-Goetz (mother) on November 29 1913 in New York City. Francis attended St. Joseph Academy in New York City from 1920-1923 and Our Lady of Mercy Grammar School from 1923-1928 in the Bronx, New York. His high school years were spent at Our Lady of Mercy High School in the Bronx from 1928-1930 and De La Salle Institute from 1930-1932 in New York City. In order for him to prepare for his studies for the priesthood, Francis studied Latin from 1936-1938 at St. Mary's College, Kentucky. He worked with a banking company until he entered religious life. Francis entered the Capuchin Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Joseph at St. Felix Friary, Huntington, IN, on August 26, 1938 and received the name frater Donatus. He pronounced his simple vows at St. Felix on August 27, 1939. Fr. Donatus continued his studies at St. Anthony Friary in Marathon, WI from 1939 to 1945. Donatus pronounced his solemn vows also at St. Anthony Friary on August 27, 1942. Father Donatus was ordained to the priesthood on May 16, 1945 at Saint Mary's Church, Marathon, Wisconsin. Master of Novices- St. Lawrence Friary, Milton, MA In 1952, at the split of the Province of St. Joseph, Father Donatus was appointed the first Master of Novices of the newly established Province of St. Mary. He faithfully held that position for twelve years (1952-1955 and 1958-1967). At St. Lawrence, Father Donatus directed over two hundred young men their first year of religious life. Fr. Donatus' personal commitment to the vision of St. Francis of Assisi was the path and light for many friars. His intense personality, his quiet disposition and his compassion for people inspirited not only the young friars but people in all of his ministries. Parochial Assistant- Our Lady Queen of Angels, New York, NY Fr. Donatus served as parochial assistant at our parish of Our Lady Queen of Angels, New York City for seven years (1946-1951 and 1967-1969). During his first summer at the parish, learning his pastoral skills, Fr. Donatus was seen in coveralls cleaning the triangular windows on the roof of the tiny church. It was an unusual sight for the parishioners. This however, indicated the idea of service Fr. Donatus exemplified. Hard working, dedicated, and spirtually motivated, Fr. Donatus began his varied ministries as a friar and a priest. Sacred Heart Church- Yonkers, NY Fr. Donatus resided at Sacred Heart Friary for many years throughout his ministerial life. He served as High School teacher (1951-1952 and 1955-1958); parochial assistant, chaplain of Yonkers General Hospital, the Sacramentine Nuns and the Sisters of Charity at Mary, the Queen Convent in Yonkers (1969-1972; 1980-1985; 1986-1992). Burke Rehabilitation Center- White Plains, NY Fr. Donatus ministered at Burke Rehabilitation Center in White Plains, NY (1972-1980) with residence at St. Conrad Friary, White Plains. Our Lady of Peace- Malboro, NY Fr. Donatus also took leadership in preparing and developing the House of Prayer for the province in August of 1985. The friary was named Our Lady of Peace situated close to the Hudson River in Malboro, NY. It was here that Fr. Donatus led the quest for the prayer of contemplation combined with manual work. Retirement- Fr. Donatus joined the friar retirement community of Saint Clare, Yonkers, NY in 1992. In 2004, after determining Father required additional care, he was assigned to Holy Name Friary in Ringwood, NJ. Sixty-eight years of commitment and fidelity to the Rule and Life of the The Poor Man of Assisi marks the life of Fr. Donatus. He has attempted to aspire to these ideals by combining the ideals of St. Francis - that prayer and work, in a quiet way, be the daily thrust of the lives of the friars. Date of Birth: November 29, 1913, New York City, NY. Investiture: August 26, 1938, Huntington, IN. First Profession: August 27, 1939, Huntington, IN.
