MURPHY, GWENDOLYN

Gwendolyn Murphy, of Yorktown Heights, died on Monday, August 25, 2008 at Field Home -Holy Comforter. She was 88 years old. Gwen taught Home Economics for 35 years, retiring from Yorktown High School in 1979. She was raised in Bedford Hills, NY, by her mother, Antha Jane Squires and her father, Ward Squires. As a teenager, she became the first female gasoline station attendant in Westchester County. She was the valedictorian of her Bedford Hills High School class, received her Bachelor's degree from Plattsburgh State and her Master's degree from New York University. Gwen traveled extensively in the United States and in Europe, but her favorite destination was her cottage in West Dennis, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. She is survived by her son, David, her daughter-in-law, Nancy, and her granddaughter, Katharine. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown at 2:00PM on Saturday, September 6, 2008. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown, 2880 Crompond Road, Yorktown Heights, NY 10598.

THORP, JOHN

John A. Thorp, 88, of North Ft. Myers, Florida, formerly of West Haverstraw, New York, entered eternal rest on 29 August 2008. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, to the late Lucy and Alfred Thorp on 15 August 1920. He had one sister, the late Mary Milan of Lyndhurst, New Jersey. John served proudly in the U.S. Army in World War II. He relocated from New Jersey to West Haverstraw, New York, and owned and operated John Thorp Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning in West Haverstraw, for over 30 years. He and his wife Edna retired to Naples, Florida, in 1988. John was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Edna, his daughter Sandra of Naples Florida, his son John and wife Margie of Omaha Nebraska, his grandchildren Missy, April, Michael, and Brian, his great grandson Salvatore, and his niece Joyce. "Poppie" was the rock of his family. He will be profoundly missed. VESPIA, CONSTANCE M.

Constance M. Vespia, a resident of Port Chester, died September 4, 2008. She was born in Jersey City, NJ to the late Frank and Josephine Palo Pietro. She was raised and educated in Jersey City. She was married September 1, 1940 at Mount Carmel Church in Jersey City, NY to Louis J. Vespia. Mrs. Vespia worked for the Donald Art Company in Port Chester, NY. She was a parishioner of the Corpus Christi Church in Port Chester. She is survived by her husband Louis J. Vespia of Port Chester, son Joseph R. Vespia and wife Mary Ann of Palm Coast, FL, grandsons Louis J. Vespia and Dean Vespia. Visitation will be 4-8 PM today, Friday, September 5, 2008 at Craft Memorial Home, Inc. Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 AM on Saturday September 6, 2008 at Corpus Christi Church 136 South Regent St. Port Chester, NY. Entombment to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery Rye Brook, NY. ORLANDO, MICHAEL

Michael Orlando, of Williamsburg, VA, formerly of Lake Carmel, NY, passed away on Sept 1, 2008 at his residence. He was the son of Michael and Helen Orlando. He is survived by his wife Lauren, sons Michael and Scott, sisters Patricia (Edward) Gerosa of Conway, SC, Laura (Ralph) Trapanese of Montrose, NY, and several nieces and nephews. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

WILLIAMS, JOSEPH P.

Joseph P. Williams, "Fuzzy", of Ossining, died on Thursday, September 4, 2008. He was 82 years old. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Betty and two daughters Barbara Vassallo (Frank) and Sharon Williams, former son-in-law Ralph Perrigino, two granddaughters Francine Minadeo (Justin) and Dawn Turco (Michael) as well as his great-grandson Oliver Turco. He is survived by his brother Francis P. Williams and sister Miriam Evangelista as well as many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Thomas and Frances (Reddy) and many siblings. A lifelong Ossining resident, Fuzzy was well-loved by all who knew him. When he wasn't playing golf, he could often be seen walking around with his plaid hat talking to people and telling them his funny one-liners and jokes. A graduate of Ossining High School, Joe joined the United States Navy and served in World War II and the Korean War. After the completion of his duty in Korea, he was on the U.S. Navy Good Will Tour around the world. Following his Navy service, Joe worked at General Foods as a stationary engineer for 31 years. Joe was also very active in his community serving as an usher at St. Ann's Church in Ossining. He was also a life member of the Ossining Hose Company #1 for more than 60 years. He always made people laugh and he will be sadly missed by family and friends. Visitation on Sunday, September 7, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 at The Dorsey Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 AM on Monday, September 8, 2008 at St. Ann's Church. Interment will follow at St. Augustine Cemetery. ALTOMARI, NANCY J.

Nancy J. Altomari, of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., homemaker and garment industry worker, fond grandmother who loved socializing, coffee, and good jokes. Born on the Lower East Side Sept 14, 1919 to Angelo and Rosina (Scaglione) Scaramuzzo. At age three months, she lost her mother and sister to the Spanish flu. Her father returned to Acri, Italy where she resided until returning to New York City at age 13 to be raised by relatives. In 1939 she married Angelo P. Altomari, who became proprietor of Fashion Tailors of Mt. Vernon, where they resided. She is survived by three children: daughters Marianne Tsakos (husband Anastasios) of Norwalk, Ct, and Rosemarie Magazino (husband Carmine) of Larchmont, NY and a son Vincent (wife Eileen) of San Francisco; proud grandmother of eight: Robert Marion, Christopher Marion, Jill Marion Nicolia, Michele Magazino Falkowski, John Magazino, Lila Altomari Gibson, Gianpaolo Altomari and Annina Altomari; and nine great grandchildren: Zachary, Morgan, Melanie, Olivia, Sienna, Nicolas, Tyler, Riggs and Sofia, and many nephews, nieces and cousins. Donations may be made in her name to the Sarah Neuman Nursing Home, 845 Palmer Ave., Mamaroneck, N.Y. 10543. Calling hours will be 3 to 5 and 7 to 9pm on Thursday at Yannantuono Funeral Home. BLANT, ERWIN

Erwin Blant, a resident of Port Chester, died on September 2, 2008 at the age of 84. Born in Port Chester, on July 17, 1924 to Mayer and Bessie Blant, he was a lifetime resident of Port Chester, New York, and member of Congregation KTI. A World War II veteran, he served in the Army 4th Infantry Division and was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. After the war, he graduated from the University of Missouri undergraduate and law school, and returned to Port Chester, to practice law, which he did for more than fifty years. Serving as the Corporation Counsel for the Village of Port Chester and as Village Justice under five different administrations, an active leader of the local Democratic Party and a long time member and past president of the Jewish War Veterans, Erwin was active in civic affairs throughout his life. Beloved husband of the late Pearl Blant, he and Pearl were married for 56 years. He is survived by son, Ian Blant, daughter-in-law, Wendy Seligson, and grandchildren Corey and Jesse Blant. He is predeceased by his beloved son, Stuart. He is fondly remembered by his many family and friends. The funeral service will be held at Congregation KTI, 575 King Street, Port Chester, NY at 10:30 AM on Thursday, September 4. Internment to follow at Riversville Cemetery, Greenwich, CT.
