LEE, DR. JOSEPH

If you've lived in Yonkers at any time since the late 1940s and ever had to have blood taken for lab tests, the odds are Dr. Joseph Lee was the person who got your blood on the first stab. His reputation for skill with a sharp needle was only outweighed by his reputation for integrity, wisdom and amazing persistence. He'd always said if he retired he'd die. He told us when he was admitted to hospital to tell people he'd just retired. No one who ever knew him will be surprised to learn that he went to work on the morning of the day he was admitted to hospital. He died two weeks later, peacefully slipping away on the morning of November 4, 2006. Dr. Lee's wife, Lillian, predeceased him in 1982. He is survived by his children, Joann, of Berkeley, California and Jim, of Los Angeles, California, and by Jean Lukaczyn, close friend of many years. There will be a memorial service for Dr. Lee on April 22, 2007, at a location to be announced later. Please send no flowers. Contributions to American Civil Liberties Union, 125 Broad Street, 18th Floor, New York, NY 10004-2400.
