Verla Gregoire
MILLERTON, NY - Verla Gregoire entered into eternal life on January 29, 2009. She will be remembered as a sweet, kind and loving wife, mother and loyal friend. Born on October 17, 1919 in Bethany, CT. She was the daughter of the late Middie and Alice Austin. She was employed with the WDC for many years and retired in 1982. In September 1940 Verla married Antonio Gregoire, whom predeceased her on May 10, 1969. She is survived by her daughters, Claudette Chamberlin, Elaine Rivard and a son, Roger Gregoire, 7 Grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by her son Ronald Gregoire. Verla came from a large family of 11 siblings of which 7 predeceased her. Calling hours will be held Sunday February 1, 2009 from 2pm-5pm at the Kenny Funeral Home, 41 Main Street, Sharon, CT. Funeral Services will be Monday February 2nd at 11:AM at St. Bernard's Church, Sharon, CT. Burial will be at the in the Spring at convenience of the Family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Devereux Foundation, 40 Devereux Way, Red Hook, NY 12571.

Alane Hanusik
YONKERS - Alane Hanusik of Yonkers, passed away on January 29, 2009 at age 53. Born on March 22, 1955 to Alan and Jean (Mahelsky) Hanusik in Yonkers where she was raised and graduated from Blessed Sacrament Academy. Alane worked as a Dental Assistant for Oro and Cohen Practice in Yonkers. Besides her parents Alan and Jean, she is survived by two brothers, Barry D. (Donna) of Dover Plains, NY and Douglas (Lucy) of LaGrangeville. She is also survived by her nieces, Ginny and Antonia and her nephew, Russell. Visitation will be at the Whalen & Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Avenue, Yonkers, NY on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m ONLY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Monday, Feb. 2, 2009 at 10 a.m.

Salvatore Luongo
HIGHLAND - Salvatore Luongo, 84, of Highland, died Thursday, January 29, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital. He was a Manager for Grand Union in Poughkeepsie for 35 years, also, worked as a Barber for Al Spadarow for many years and then on Main St. called "Lone Star Barber Shop" and a member of St. Mary's Church parishoner for many years. Born August 4, 1924, in Naples, Italy, he was the son of Dominic and Amalia DeFria Luongo. On December 26, 1944, in Naples, Italy, he married Immacolata Luongo, who predeceased him in April 21, 2002. Survivors include Amalia Raguseo and Husband Joseph of Marlboro; Maria Wilson and companion, John of West Virginia; son, Dominic and companion, Faye of Wappingers Falls; daughter, Gelsomina Luongo and companion, Debbie of Seattle, WA; Antoinette Luongo and her companion Laura of Fallsburgh, NY; Carmela Galm and husband, Richard of Reno, NV; nine grandchildren, Lisa, Lynn, Gina, Nicole, Krista, Stephanie, Lorena, Sean and John; six great-grandchildren, Angelia, Roan, Elena Carlo, Abigail, A.J., and many, many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters, Carmela, Gelsomina and Maria and one brother, Fernando. Calling hours will be held from 24pm and 7-9pm Sunday, Feb. 1st, at Joseph J. Darrow Sr. Funeral Home, 39 South Hamilton St., Poughkeepsie, NY. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 10:30am with Msg. John Brinn officiating. Burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery.

Frances Shakin Elkin Schoenberg
RHINEBECK After a long and meaningful life, Frances Schoenberg, a dynamic resident of the Baptist Home community in Rhinebeck, died on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at age 91. Fran was born in Brooklyn, New York to Nathan and Mamie Shakin. She married Nathan D. Elkin in 1942 and her second marriage was to George Schoenberg in 1972. She was a proud alumna of Thomas Jefferson High School and Brooklyn College, class of 1937. Fran taught fourth grade for thirtyfive years in Brooklyn, at P.S. 76 and P.S. 203 in Flatbush. She loved teaching and was a proud member of the UFT Teacher's Union. An active member of Congregation B'nai Israel of Midwood, she served as the President of the Hebrew School PTA. A life-long volunteer, she worked on behalf of the Brooklyn College Alumni Association, B'nai Brith, Hadassah, the Hebrew Home for the Aged and many other organizations both in Brooklyn, and later, in Margate, Florida. In her last years, she proudly served as a member of the Baptist Home Auxiliary and as President of its Resident's Council. She will be remembered as a loving friend to many throughout her life and as a proud, loving and devoted mother to Edward Elkin and daughter-in-law Mary Ann Forrest of Oakland, California, and to Judith Elkin and son-in-law Eugene Fleishman of Poughkeepsie, New York. She treasured her grandsons, Jeremy Schwartz and Jamie Fleishman and her step-grandchildren Steven and Judy Fleishman, Daniel and Robin Fleishman, Rachel Fleishman and Dave Warren, and great-grandchildren Ryan, Emma, Reid and Dennis Fleishman. She was predeceased by her sisters, Gertrude and Dorothy and her brother Howard. She will be lovingly remembered by her younger sister Evelyn Kupferman, her nieces Nancy Cohen and Laury Brown and sister-in-law Florence Kaplan. Her funeral will take place on Monday, February 2nd at 9:30 AM at Temple Beth El in Poughkeepsie, with Rabbi Neal Loevinger and Cantor Rena Shapiro leading the service. Burial will follow at Wellwood Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY. The family will be observing the week of Shiva (visiting the mourners) at the home of Judith Elkin and Eugene Fleishman on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday evenings, with evening worship services at 7:30 PM. Ida M. Christianson
ITHACA - Ida M. Christianson of Ithaca, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2009 at the age of 91. Born in New York City on October 6, 1917, Ida was the daughter of late Frank and Ida (Glutasaris) Krammer, both from Hungary. She married Kristian A. Christianson, who was born in Norway, in 1953. Kris served in the U.S. Army during World War II and returned to New York City as a professional power engineer. He was the Chief Engineer for the New York Institute for Special Education in the Bronx. After graduation from secretarial school, Ida was an executive secretary for several companies in New York City including the National Shoe Retailers Association and the Crestwick Card Company. She worked as the Registrar for the New York Institute for Special Education for more than 20 years and retired from there in 1980. Ida lived in New York City, Stowe, Vermont, and Wappingers Falls before moving to Longview in Ithaca in 2000. Ida was preceded in death by her husband in 1995 and her sister, Mary Ida Strassburg in 2008. She is survived by four nieces, Carol Jean (James) Doolittle of Trumansburg and their son, Lawrence, Lynn (Peter) Dragasakis, Carol Ann (Robert) Janickey and Torri Lee (David) Hill; and two nephews, Kenneth (Terry) Christianson and Donald (Kathy) Christianson. A private graveside service will be held at the Wappingers Falls Cemetery in the Spring. The family asks those who wish to make a contribution in Ida's memory to kindly consider the Lakeside Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, 1229 Trumansburg Road, Ithaca, N.Y. 14850 or the American Legion Arthur E. Peter W. Gaffney
TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE - Peter W. Gaffney, 64, of the Town of Poughkeepsie, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009 at St. Francis Hospital. Mr. Gaffney was a surgical technician for Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie up until retirement. He was a United States Navy Veteran and a member of St. Peter's Church in Poughkeepsie. Born June 20, 1944, in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of the late William and Alice McKenna Gaffney. On Aug. 7, 1965 in Poughkeepsie, he married Mary Ann McKenna. Mrs. Gaffney predeceased him on Aug. 11, 2000. Survivors include his two daughters, Alisyn Gaffney of Poughkeepsie; Eileen McDowell of Pleasant Valley; his son, Peter Gaffney of Providence Town, MA; two grandsons, Jonathan and Sean; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 3, at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home Inc., 218 Mill St., Poughkeepsie. Wheelchair entrance is located in the rear of the funeral home on Vassar St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Our Lady of the Rosary of St. Peter's Parish, Hudson View Dr., Poughkeepsie. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.

Frank W. Hamer Jr.
PLEASANT VALLEY - Frank W. Hamer, Jr., 47, of Pleasant Valley and formerly of LaGrange and Cortlandt Manor, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at his home. Born in Yonkers on February 12, 1961, he was the son of Frank W. Hamer, Sr. and Helen S. Girard Hamer. He was employed by Verizon in Poughkeepsie for many years. He enjoyed hot rods, drag racing and snowmobile racing and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Frank is survived by his mother, Helen Hamer, of Peekskill; his sisters, Leslie Smyth and her husband, John of Vernon, CT and Dianne See of NY; and three nephews, two nieces and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral arrangements are private under the direction of the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimerës Association, 2 Jefferson Plaza, Suite 102, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
