Alexander W. Tervenski
POUGHKEEPSIE - Alexander W. Tervenski, 94, of Poughkeepsie, died Friday, July 4, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie. He was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on January 2, 1914 to the late Stephen Czerwinski and Mary Heresniak Czerwinski. He married Louise Francese on November 30, 1937 at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Poughkeepsie, where they made their home and resided together for 70 years. Louise predeceased him on November 10, 2007. In 1976, he retired from the Hudson River Psychiatric Hospital, where he worked as a head cook for 40 years. He was a member of the St. Jude League and numerous senior citizen organizations. In addition to his career as a cook, Alexander dedicated his time and affection to his family as a loving husband and father, and a proud grandfather and great grandfather. The flash of his bright smile and the twinkle in his eyes will be forever remembered and sorely missed. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Lysko and husband, Robert of Poughkeepsie; his son, Stephen Tervenski and wife, Dorothy of Wingdale; grandchildren, Shawn Tervenski, Karen (Lysko) Warden and husband, Marc, Lisa (Lysko) Szalaji and husband, Andrew, Gregg Lysko and wife, Pauline, Scott Lysko and wife, Joie, and Tracey Lysko; great grandchildren, Jenna and Michael Opitz, David, Laura, Theresa, and Steven Warden, James, Mary, Kathryn, Jordan, Alexander and Tyler Lysko. Many nieces and nephews also survive him. Besides his wife, Louise, he is predeceased by a son, Alexander Tervenski; sisters, Mary Koziol, Helen Benson and Katherine Nicodemus; brothers, William, John, Louis, Frank and Edward Tervenski. The family would like to express their gratitude to Doris Kodom, whose care helped bring great joy to Alexander during the past several months. Donations in his honor can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Calling hours will be held Wednesday, July 9, 2008 from 4-7pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 10am at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel of St. Peter's Parish, 185 Hudsonview Drive, Poughkeepsie. Father James Garisto will be the officiant. Burial will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery.

Joan Cahill
HYDE PARK - Joan E. Cahill, 76, a longtime area resident, died Monday, July 7, 2008 at home.
Mrs. Cahill was a registered nurse at IBM, East Fishkill for many years until her retirement.
A well known local watercolor artist, she was passionate about her garden and her cats.
Born in Kingston on February 8, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Elizabeth Mason Hutton Gunter. Mrs. Cahill was a graduate of the Albany Medical College School of Nursing.
In Kingston, she married Robert V. Cahill. He predeceased her in 1992.
Survivors include her daughter, Barbara 'Bobbi' Samuels of Hyde Park; son, Harry Gochee III and wife, Ann, of Delmar, NY; two grandsons, Harry IV and Benjamin Gochee, both of Delmar; and sister, Jane Hutton Gunter - McCoy of Pittsford, NY.
Calling hours will be from 10 am to 12 noon, Thursday, July 10, 2008 at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park. Funeral services will follow at 12:30 pm at St. James' Episcopal Church, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. Rev. Chuck Kramer will be officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in St. Mary's Cemetery, Kingston. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dutchess County SPCA, 636 Violet Ave., Hyde Park, NY 12538, or, the American Heart Assoc., 301 Manchester Rd., Suite 105, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.

Vincent Cavaleri
PAWLING - Vincent P. Cavaleri, 83, a life-long resident of Pawling, NY, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital, Poughkeepsie, NY. Son of the late Paul and Catherine (Santamaria) Cavaleri, Vince was born in Brooklyn on September 19, 1924. He proudly served his country in the US Army in the 52nd Field Artillery Battalion during WWII and graduated from Ithaca College. After the war, he came to Pawling, and married the former Antoinette Milazzo in St. John's Church. Vince owned and operated the Pawling Liquor Store on East Main Street for 40 years. His loving wife, Ann, predeceased him on October 13, 1990. Vince was a long-time member of St. John's Church, a 50+ year member of the Knight's of Columbus and the Pawling Fire Department, a 4th Degree Knight in the Poughkeepsie Assembly Knights of Columbus, and a member of the VFW and the HaslerKamp Post American Legion. Vince is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Kraft and her husband, Tom, of Poughquag; his sister, Mary Conti and her husband, John, of Pawling; his sister-in-law, Bess Hendricks, of Poughkeepsie; his uncle, Frank Cavaleri and his wife, Sue, of Bedford Hills; grandchildren, Victoria and Thomas Kraft of Poughquag; nieces Mary Jane Murphy and her husband, Tom, of New Milford, CT, Joann Kane and her husband, John, of Poughkeepsie, and Denise Tierney and her husband, Vince, of Pleasant Valley; several great- nieces and nephews, cousins, and many, many friends. In addition to his wife and parents, Vince is predeceased by a sister, Amedea, brother-in-law, Jim Hendricks, in- laws, Josephine and Vito Milazzo, and great-nephew, James Davey. Friends may call at the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling, Wednesday, July 9th from 5-9 PM. The American Legion will conduct a service at 7 PM, the Knights of Columbus at 7:30 PM, and the Fire Department at 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10 AM at St. John's Church, Pawling. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.

Doris L. Coons
WASSAIC - Doris L. Coons, 86, a longtime resident of Wassaic, NY, died Monday, July 7, 2008 at Sharon Health Care Center in Sharon, CT. Mrs. Coons was a food service worker for the Webutuck Central School District for 30 years retiring in 1987. She was born July 17, 1921 in Wallkill, NY, the daughter of the late Clarence and Josephine Carswell McHugh. On April 21, 1946 in Wallkill, NY, she married Robert W. Coons who died March 14, 1980. She was a charter member of the Wassaic Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary and a member of the Amenia United Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Coons is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Strang and her husband, Gordon, of Dover Plains; a granddaughter, Jennifer Strang-Thrasher and her husband, Daryl of Wassaic and three great grandsons, Andrew, Leshaun, and Teyvan Thrasher. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Harrison McHugh. Calling hours will be held Friday, July 11, 2008 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY with funeral services at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Nancy Thornton-Mackenzie officiating. Burial will follow at Amenia Island Cemetery in Amenia, NY. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wassaic Rescue Squad, Firehouse Rd., Wassaic, NY 12592.

Gerald W. Lenahan
BEACON - Gerald W. Lenahan, a longtime Beacon resident, died Sunday, July 6, 2008, at his home in Beacon. He was 73. Born in Peekskill on November 1, 1934, he was the son of Leo and Dorothy Kent Lenahan. He married Janet E. Conklin on July 21, 1961 in Peekskill. Mrs. Lenahan survives at home. Mr. Lenahan worked for New York Central Railroad and later as a senior electrician at the former Texaco Research Center in Glenham. He was a US Air Force veteran. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Hyde Park and the American Legion Post, Beacon. He was a parishioner of St. Joachim-St. John the Evangelist Church, Beacon. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Gerry S. Lenahan, Pleasant Valley, and three grandchildren, Jason, Devon, and Shelby Lenahan. He was predeceased by his daughter, Eleane Lenahan, in 1962. The family will receive their friends on Thursday, July 10, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Halvey Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Willow Street, Beacon. The American Legion will meet for services at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, July 11, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 Willow Street, Beacon. Interment with military honors will follow in Assumption Cemetery, Oregon Road, Cortlandt Manor. Memorial donations may be made to Dutchess County SPCA, 636 Violet Avenue, Hyde Park, NY 12538-1864, or Hospice of Dutchess County, 374 Violet Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601-1034.

Dr. Thomas G. Pendell
TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE - Dr. Thomas G. Pendell, 74, a lifetime area resident and formerly of Beacon, died Sunday, July 6, 2008 at home. Dr. Pendell was a self-employed Chiropractor in Poughkeepsie, retiring in 2000. He was a member of the American Chiropractic Association, American Contract Bridge League - Life Master, American Poolplayers Association (Rank of 6) and the Kiwanis Club. He served on the Wappingers Central School Board (Past President), Hudson Valley Philharmonic Board (Past Treasurer of Board), Southern Dutchess Country Club (Board of Directors), Dutchess County Bridge Association (Treasurer) and was Palmer College Student Council President and Class President. He was also a Chiropractic Consultant for the US Veterans Hospital in Castle Point from 1966 to 1967. Dr. Pendell served in the US Army. Born May 26, 1934 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of Robert G. and Alice Gerow Pendell. He was a graduate of Beacon High School, received his BA from Colgate University, attended Albany Law School, Palmer College and the International College of Applied Kinesiology. He received the Outstanding Graduate Award from Palmer College in 1966. Survivors include his son, Robert G. Pendell of Manchester, CT; his daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie W. Pendell and John Franz; his son, Thomas G. Pendell Jr. of Stamford, CT; and grandchildren, Madison and Peter Pendell. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert G. Pendell. Calling hours will be 4-8 p.m., Thursday, July 10, at Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, July 11, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Washingtonville Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Foundation, 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 or Salvation Army, Main St., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

Walter Joseph Shamkin
TUCSON, ARIZONA - Walter Joseph Shamkin, 52, highly skilled and respected craftsman and construction foreman, died Saturday, July 5, 2008. A former resident of Poughkeepsie and graduate of Arlington High School, Walter lived in Tucson for the last 30 years. He worked for Tucson Building and Engineering for 15 years. During this time Walter helped change the face of Tucson. Some of his most visible work includes the Mt. Hopkins Telescope Conversion and Catalina High School as well as many building and improvement projects for the University of Arizona including the College of Medicine, Arizona Cancer Center, College of Nursing and College of Law. While his work remains a public legacy, Walter will be best remembered as a humble, kind, good humored gentleman to all who knew him. He was also a talented musician, a proud father who always talked of his children, a loving husband and caring son and brother. Walter is survived by his wife of 18 years, Patricia Whalen Shamkin, his daughter and son, Carly and Christopher Shamkin of Millerton, NY, his daughter, son-in-law and grandson Sandy, Tommy and Matthew Edmitston of Tucson, and many nieces and nephews. Walter is the son of Mary Fox Shamkin (deceased) and Walter Shamkin of Tucson. He is also survived by his brothers Mikhail Shamkin of Virgin Gorda, James Shamkin of Tucson and his sister Christina Haufe-Howard of Highland Park IL. A memorial will be held this Friday, July 11, 10 AM at Hudgell's Funeral Home, 1335 S. Swan Rd, Tucson, 85711. A burial will follow at the McGee Ranch, McGee Ranch Rd. in Sahuarita. Walter will be laid to rest next to his mother at the McGee-Fox family cemetery.
