Dennis James Krakower
Born: November 13, 1950
Died: July 06, 2015
U.S. Veteran - Dennis J. Krakower, 64, passed away at his home in North Carolina on July 6th following a brief illness. Dennis was born November 13, 1950 the son of the late Martin Krakower and Carmela Cardinale.
He is survived by his wife and partner of 31 years, Kimberly (Roman) Krakower, his beloved daughter Leah A. Krakower of Weirton, WV, and his two granddaughters, Alexia Hayden and Avery Johnston. He is also survived by his brother and sister in-law Howard and Mary Beth Krakower, and his sister and brother in-law, Gail and Tom Weisman, all of Poughkeepsie, along with his mother-in-law Connie Bahret of Nokomis, Fla.
Dennis served in the US Army and attended Poughkeepsie Schools and Miami University. He was a gifted builder who served as the Project Manager for many institutional projects along the East Coast. He will be dearly missed by his extended family of many nieces, nephews, cousins and coworkers.
Calling hour will take place on Saturday, July 11th from 10am-11am at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 218 Mill Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Street level and wheelchair accessible entrance located off Vassar street. A Funeral Home Service will begin at 11am immediately following the calling hour, followed by entombment in St. Peter's Cemetery Mausoleum, Poughkeepsie, NY. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of your choice or the American Diabetes Association.

Carrie Love Smart
POUGHKEEPSIE - Carrie Love Smart, 75, a 55 year residence of Poughkeepsie, died Thursday, July 3, 2008 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Ms. Smart was a retired technician for IBM in Poughkeepsie. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Poughkeepsie. Born October 25, 1932 in Allendale, SC, she was the daughter of the late George Love and Eula Chisolm Love. She is survived by her son, Charles Smart; daughter-in-law, Esther King both of Poughkeepsie; six grandchildren, Bobby King of Wallkill, New York, Charlene Smart, Darlene Smart Baker and husband, Randolph, Jr., Hope Smart and Tiffany Copher; seven great grandchildren, Natany'a Smart, Shakur Peterson, MoQuan Dickens, Qucniqua Rankins, Rahiem Mincey, Amani Baker and Moques Dickens; two great great grandchildren, Khalil Baker and Cyniah Frederick all of Poughkeepsie; three sisters, May-Lee Singleton and Adell Love both of Allendale, South Carolina and Catherine Jennings of New York, New York; one brother, Johnny Love and wife, Marie of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Laura Smart Mac of Hampton, North Carolina. She had special nieces and nephew, Marlene L. Love, Terence K. Love and Herbert Love and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. She was predeceased by husband, Theodore Smart, mother, Eula Chisolm Love, father, George Love, Sr., sisters, Ethel Joyner, Pauline Love and Sarah Love, brothers, George Love, Jr. and Robert Love. Visitation will be Thursday, July 10, 2008 10:00am 3/8 11:00am at Beulah Baptist Church, 92 Catherine Street, Poughkeepsie, New York. Services will begin at 11:00am. Reverend Jesse V. Bottoms, Jr. Officiating. Interment will be at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, Poughkeepsie, New York. Rhodes Funeral Homes, 43 Fairview Avenue, Poughkeepsie, New York 12601 entrusted with professional arrangements.

David P. Ausubel
PORT EWEN, NY - David P. Ausubel, M.D., Ph.D., scholar, theorist, professor, author, and psychiatrist, 89, died July 9th, 2008 at Victory Lake Nursing Home in Hyde Park, NY. Dr. Ausubel's work in Educational Psychology (meaningful verbal learning), Child Development (theory of satellization), Adolescent Development, and Anthropology have been helpful to students, scholars, and thoughtful readers throughout the world. David P. Ausubel was born in Brooklyn, October 25, 1918 to the late Herman and Lillian (Leff) Ausubel. David Ausubel attended the University of Pennsylvania, taking the pre-medical course and majoring in Psychology. After graduating from the medical school at Middlesex University, he completed a rotating internship at Gouveneur Hospital (NYC Department of Hospitals) located in lower east side of Manhattan, including the Little Italy and Chinatown of 1944. David Ausubel was a Senior Assistant Surgeon, Reserve Corp, in military service under the US Public Health Service, (Equivalent to the rank of Captain, U.S. Army) Honorable Discharge serving overseas in Germany, Guatemala, and Nicaragua during World War II. His residency training in psychiatry was performed at the US Public Health Service Hospital, Lexington, KY; Buffalo Psychiatric Center; and Albert Einstein Medical School. With assistance from the GI Bill, he earned a PH.D. in Developmental Psychology from Columbia University. A series of psychological professorships ensued at schools of education: the University of Illinois, University of Toronto, and in the European universities at Berne, the Salesian University at Rome, and the Officer's Training College at Munich. He received a Fulbright Research Grant in 1957-58 to do a comparative study of the vocational motivation of Maoris and Europeans. In 1973 he retired from academic life to devote full time to his psychiatric practice. His principal interests in psychiatry have been general psychopathology, ego development, drug addiction, and forensic psychiatry. Dr. Ausubel's published works include 26 books (textbooks in developmental and educational psychology, and books on specialized topics such as drug addiction, psychopathology, and ego development) and over 150 original articles in psychiatric and psychological journals. In 1976 he received the Thorndike Award from the American Psychological Association for "Distinguished Psychological Contributions to Education." Dr. Ausubel retired from professional life in 1994 to devote himself full time, at the age of 75, to writing. Four books resulted. Survivors include his wife, Gloria George Ausubel; they married on July 31st, 1985. A son Frederick Ausubel of Newton Highlands, MA and a daughter Laura Beck of Florence, MA. A brother, Hillel Ausubel of Great Neck, NY and a sister Jeanne Ausubel of Mexico, and four grandchildren. An older sister Mildred died at age 8. Entrusted to the care of the Keyser Funeral Service, Inc., 216 Broadway, Port Ewen, where the procession will form on Saturday at 9:15 am and proceed to St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church where at 10:00 am a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Burial in St. Peter's Cemetery, Kingston with military honors provided by Joyce Schirick Post # 1386 VFW. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 7 - 9 pm and Friday from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9. The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Restoration Fund, 93 Wurts Street, Kingston, NY 12401.

Mary Baker Brown
DOVER PLAINS, NY - Mary Baker Brown, 100, a 64-year resident of Dover Plains, NY, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at Candlewood Valley Care Center in New Milford, CT. Mrs. Brown was a staff attendant at the Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center in Wingdale for 30 years, and received the Staff Attendant of the Year Award in 1956. She was born April 5, 1908 in Rutland, VT, the daughter of the late Fred J. and Carrie Abbott Baker. On September 1, 1933 in Pawling, NY, she married William L. Brown who died June 1, 1986. Mrs. Brown was an active 4-H leader in Dover Plains and a member of the Dover Plains United Methodist Church. Mrs. Brown is survived by three sons, Frederick Brown and his wife, Janet of St. Cloud, FL, David Brown and his wife, Sydney, of Westport, CT, and Stanley Brown and his wife, Jeanne, of The Villages, FL; one sister, Mable Connor of New Milford, PA; nine grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Carl, Edward and Charlie Baker and a grandson, William L. Brown, II. Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 11, 2008 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Hufcut Funeral Home, 3159 Route 22, Dover Plains, NY with funeral services at 3 p.m. Burial will follow at South Dover Rural Cemetery, Wingdale, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dover Plains United Methodist Church, Mill St., Dover Plains, NY 12522.

Bro. Matthew DeFamio, O.F.M. Cap.
BEACON - Brother Matthew DeFamio, O.F.M. Cap., a Beacon resident, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Wingate at Beacon. He was 83. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 9, 1925 to Francis and Rosa Flora DeFamio. At baptism, he was given the name, Anthony. He was invested with the Capuchim habit on July 27, 1947 at St. Lawrence Friary, Beacon. On August 8, 1948, he professed Temporary Vows. He professed Solemn Vows on August 12, 1951 at St. Lawrence Friary in Beacon. For most of Bro. Matthew's religious life, he was assigned to various parishes and monasteries as a maintenance engineer and as a cook. Prior to his joining the Province of the Sacred Stigmata, Bro. Matthew served in the US Army as a Rifleman (PFC) with the 2nd Infantry Regiment, 5th Division from February 14, 1944 to December 24, 1945. During this time, he served overseas. He was honorably discharged and was a recipient of the Purple Heart for his heroic service to our country. Brother Matthew was retired and a resident of the Infirmary at St. Lawrence Friary, Beacon. Visitation for Bro. Matthew will be Friday, July 11, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Lawrence Friary, 180 Sargent Avenue, Beacon. There will be a Wake Service at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, July 11, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence Friary. Interment will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

John Cocuzza
HOPEWELL JUNCTION - John J. Cocuzza, a 44-year resident of Hopewell Junction, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at New York Presbyterian Hospital (Cornell). He was 72. John was born in Berlin, New York on June 7, 1936 to John J. and Alice Brown Cocuzza. He married the former Frances R. Vassalo. Mrs. Cocuzza survives at home in Hopewell Junction. Following graduation from high school in 1954, John enlisted in the US Marine Corps. While in the Marines, he served two years in Japan in the capacity of an encryptor, a highly sensitive and confidential position at that time. He was a graduate of St. John's University, New York, receiving a degree in accounting while working full time. He joined IBM Corp. in 1964 where he held many administrative and management positions, the last two of which were Corporate Payroll Accounting Manager and Poughkeepsie Site Business Controls Manager. He is a past secretary of Dutchess Boat Club, Beacon, past treasurer of the Whortlekill Rod and Gun Club, Hopewell Junction, and City Brook Hunting Club, Hancock, NY. In addition to his wife, Frances, John is survived by six children, Caren Cocuzza, Virginia Beach, VA, Robert J. Cocuzza and his wife, Debbi, Hopewell Junction, Patricia Strack and her husband, Darren, Lagrangeville, Michael Cocuzza and his wife, Heidi, Hockessin, DE, Paige Constable, Brooklyn, and R. Todd Constable, Manhattan. In addition he so loved his grandchildren, Robert J. Cocuzza, Jr., Jordan Strack, Jocelyn Strack, Garret Cocuzza, and Dylan Rose Cocuzza. The family will receive their friends on Friday, July 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Halvey Funeral Home, Inc., 24 Willow Street, Beacon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, July 12, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 31 Willow Street, Beacon. Interment will follow in St. Joachim's Cemetery, 303 Washington Avenue, Beacon. Donations in John's memory may be made to Hospice of Dutchess County, 374 Violet Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601-1034 and Animal Rescue Foundation, PO Box 1129, Beacon, NY 12508-8129.

Ruth "Ronnie" Cossu
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Ruth "Ronnie" Cossu, 81 years old, of Poughkeepsie, passed away peacefully at the Hudson Valley Nursing Center in Highland on Tuesday, July 8, 2008. She was born January 1, 1927 in Brooklyn, and was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Fay Flinker Freshman. Ronnie was a faithful and devoted wife and mother. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Cossu on September 29, 2007 and is survived by her daughters, Brigette C. Cossu of Poughkeepsie, and Denise Metz and her husband, Jeremy, of Golden's Bridge; five grandchildren, Allison, Jordan, Talia, Ethan and Matthew; numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held for Ronnie on Friday, July 11th at 6 p.m. at the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Homes, Inc., 1028 Main Street, Fishkill. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 301 Manchester Road, Suite 105, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
