Hellen Costakis
RED HOOK - Hellen Costakis, 82, of Red Hook, NY, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck. Born January 3, 1926, in Narva, Estonia, Hellen was the daughter of the late Martin and Lilli (Reintal) Cuss. She married Milton A. Costakis in November of 1953 in Westchester County. Hellen and her family moved to Red Hook in 1964 where she raised her family and operated several restaurant businesses. Considered an "Angel on Earth" by many, Hellen was a loving mother, devoted wife and deeply cherished by her friends and family. She left Estonia prior to the communist rule to seek a new life in the United States. Hellen's passions included not only telling stories from her past and present but listening to the stories of her patrons. She was also versed in several languages. She lived a life full of activity, including managing a business and raising twelve children. Hellen was an avid gardener but her greatest pleasure was always her children and grandchildren. Hellen will truly be missed by all the lives she touched. She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years: Milton A. Costakis, ten children and their spouses: Helen & Joe Graff of Lake Grove, LI, Margaret Greeley of Woodland, PA, Lilly & Kevin Kowalski of Tivoli, Milton & Teresa Costakis of Elizaville, Thomas & Melissa Costakis of Red Hook, Athena (Tina) & Don Gomo and Michael & Barbara Costakis of Hyde Park, Sandra Costakis of Red Hook, John & Christy Costakis of Red Hook, and Anna & Randy Carey of Stone Ridge, NY. Twenty-eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild also survive her. Two sons predeceased her: Paul in 1976, and Hans in 1987. Funeral services will be held at 9:00AM on Saturday, July 19th, at Burnett & White Funeral Home, 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook. The Rev. Alexander Vinogradov will officiate. Burial will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Red Hook. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 2 - 4 & 7 - 9 PM. Memorial donations may be made in Hellen's memory to the American Diabetes Association, 333 Seventh Avenue, 17th Floor, New York, NY 10001 or the American Heart Association, 301 Manchester Rd. Suite 105, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Hellen gave throughout her life and a scholarship will be created in her honor.

Adrian Forzani
PAWLING - Adrian A. Forzani, 87, a long-time resident of Pawling, passed away Sunday, July 13, 2008 in Matthews, NC. Son of the late Guilio and Mary (Vara) Forzani, he was born on February 20, 1921 in Manhattan. Before coming to Pawling, Adrian owned and operated "Adrian's" Restaurant in Mahopac Falls, NY for 18 years. In Pawling he went to work at the post office, retiring after 15 years of dedicated service. On June 18, 1944, he married the former Phyllis Castellone, and shortly after they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary, she passed away on June 23, 2007. Adrian was a WWII US Army veteran, and was a proud and active member of the American Legion, serving as a founding member and past Post Commander of the Bronx American Legion Post. Adrian was also a member and past Post Commander of the Hasler-Kamp Post American Legion, in Pawling, where he ran the Oratorical Contest for Boy's State. Adrian was also a member of the Sons of Italy. Adrian is survived by his daughter Clare Shepard and her husband, Spencer, of Charlotte, NC; two sons, Adrian Forzani, Jr. and his wife Carole, of Williamsville, NY, and Brian Forzani of Pleasant Hill, CA; grandchildren Scott Forzani and his wife Noelle, Spence Shepard and his wife Lea, and Clarissa Shepard; and great-grandchildren Briana and Preston Forzani. Friends may call at the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling Friday 5-8 PM and Saturday 11:00 - 12:20 PM. The American Legion will conduct a service at 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 1 PM at St. John's Church, Pawling. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Parkinson Association of the Carolinas, 601 East 5th Street, Suite 140, Charlotte, NC 28202 or the HaslerKamp Post American Legion, Pawling, NY 12564.

Judy Freeman
POUGHKEEPSIE - Judy B. Freeman, 91, a fourteen year Poughkeepsie resident and previously of Salt Point for almost forty years, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at home. Prior to retirement, Mrs. Feeman was a bookkeeper for various local businesses. She also volunteered her time with the F.W Vanderbilt Garden Association, and Dutchess Outreach. Born in Gilbertville, Mass. on June 28, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Vincent and Karolina Plata Bednarz. She was a 1935 graduate of Hardwick High School in Gilbertville. In Springfield, Mass. on November 9, 1946, she married John F. Freeman, Sr. He predeceased her on May 1, 1982. Survivors include daughter, Jackie Freeman of Pleasant Valley; a sister, Becky Wandas of Chicopee, Mass.; a brother, Joseph P. Bednarz of Tallahassee, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Stella Bednarz of Springfield, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Angela Rymarski; and five brothers, Chester, Stephen, Rudolph, Henry, and Stanley Bednarz. In keeping with her wishes, cremation will take place at the convenience of the family. Memorial calling hours will be from 4 to 7 Pm, Friday, July 18, 2008 at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park. A memorial service will take place at 1 Pm, Saturday, July 19th at the funeral home. Rev. Chuck Kramer will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, Mass. 01104.

Edward Murphy, Jr.
GLENHAM, NY - Edward S. Murphy, Jr., 96 years old, of Glenham, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at his residence. His family was at his bedside when he died. He was born January 17, 1912 in New York City's "Hell's Kitchen." He was the son of the late Edward S. Murphy, Sr. and Ella Walden. Mr. Murphy was a retired Master Technician for Texaco Research in Glenham and a retired Constable for the Town of Fishkill. He attended Public School in New York City and in Beacon. On December 22, 1940 he married Alice O'Donnell at St. Joachim's Church in Beacon. Mrs. Murphy survives at home. He is also survived by his children: Sandra Trifilo and her husband Eugene, of Glenham, Donna Bamond and her husband David of Fishkill and Hilton Head, South Carolina, Edward Murphy and his wife, Bernadette, of Marlboro, Patricia Usifer of Milton, and Doreen Murphy of Glenham. Mr. Murphy is survived by eight grandchildren: Mark T. Trifilo, Michael E. Archer, Eugene J. Trifilo, Timothy M. Trifilo, Brian Usifer, Joseph Murphy, Megan Murphy, and Cara Murphy. He was pre-deceased by two grandsons: Frank Trifilo and Christopher Usifer. Additionally, Mr. Murphy is survived by 8 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and many friends. Capt. Murphy was the oldest living member of Slater Chemical Fire Company in Glenham at the time of his death. He was a longtime community volunteer and local singer. Until recently, Mr. Murphy enjoyed singing, "For the old people" at The Fishkill Health Related Center. On July 4th 1939, Mr. & Mrs. Murphy attended Lou Gehrig Day Appreciation Day at Yankee Stadium. On that day Lou Gehrig spoke his famous words, "Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. . ." As his family, we echo those sentiments for the many years we spent with our "Poppy." On the occasion of his 9th birthday, Jan. 17, 2007, Supervisor Joan Pagones declared his birthday, Ed Murphy Day in the Town of Fishkill. Memorial Contributions can be made to: The Double H - Hole in the Woods Camp, 97 Hidden Valley Road, Lake Luzerne, New York 12846 or Joe Torre's Safe at Home Foundation, PO Box 3133, Grand Central Station, New York, New York 10163. Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 18th from 6 - 9 p.m. and on Saturday, July 19th from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., at the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Homes, Inc., 1082 Main Street, Fishkill, followed by A Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. at St. Mary Mother of the Church, Fishkill. The Rev. David Nolan will officiate. Internment will be private.

Steven Neglia
WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - Steven Anthony Neglia, 38 years old, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie following a long illness. He was born May 29, 1970 in the Bronx and was the son of Frank Neglia of Wappingers Falls and the late Florence Regina Seaman Neglia, who died in January, 2003. Steven was a very loving person. He loved music and playing the guitar and especially loved being around people. Besides his father, Steven is survived by a daughter, Samantha Neglia of CA; three brothers, Frank Neglia, III and his wife, Kitty, Vincent Neglia and Joseph Neglia, all of Wappingers Falls and a sister, Catherine White and her husband, Daniel, of Milan; two nieces, Nicole and Julia White, and three nephews, Daniel White and Joseph F. and Mark L. Neglia. Funeral services for Steven will be private at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to ALS Clinic, 19 Warehouse Row, Albany, NY 12205. Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Homes, Inc., 1028 Main Street, Fishkill.

Maria Schnaidt
FISHKILL, NY - Maria J. Schnaidt, 85 years old, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. She was born August 17, 1922 in Unterjesinger kreis Tuebingen, Germany and was the daughter of the late Wilhelm and Anna Klett Rabe. On April 18, 1948, she married her childhood friend, Otto Schnaidt. In 1960, Maria and her husband purchased the Fishkill Meat Market, which they operated until their retirement. They enjoyed many happy years together until Otto's death on July 16, 1996. Maria was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church in Fishkill and the family wishes to thank Pastor Gloria McKenna and the church members for their many kindnesses and support. She was a long-time volunteer at St. Francis Hospital Ladies Auxiliary in Beacon. She is survived by her daughters, Edith Tholo and son-in-law, Robert, Inge Reynolds and son-in-law, Robert, Ruth Dean and son-in-law, William, and her grandchildren, Erika Salkin and her husband, Lee, Stephanie Tholo, Sonja Reynolds and Rob Reynolds; great-grandchildren, Marian, Nicolas, Heidi, Coty and Ava; a sister, Annaliese Rabe Hesse in Cubelas, Spain, and her niece, Margit Montaner Hesse and husband, Jose; also her grand nieces, Monserrat, Ana, Gloria and Maria. Other survivors include her cousin, Ruth Wisst and husband, Sigmund, and cousins in Germany. Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 18th from 1 - 4 p.m. at the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Homes, Inc., 1028 Main Street, Fishkill, with funeral services taking place at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to St. Francis Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, 11 Hastings Drive, Beacon, NY 12508 or the First Reformed Church of Fishkill, 1153 Main Street, Fishkill, NY 12524.

Louis J. Scotti
TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE - Louis J. Scotti, 93, of Town of Poughkeepsie, died July 16, 2008 at Ferncliff Nursing Home. He had worked as a salesman for M. Schwartz & Co., Poughkeepsie and Glenwood Clothing, retiring in 1980. A local resident for most of his life, he also resided in Green Point, NY. He was a member of the Italian Center and of St. Mary's Church in Poughkeepsie. He also was an Elections Supervisor for the First Ward in the City of Poughkeepsie. A tremendous athlete, he excelled in track, football and soccer. Born July 20, 1914 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of Frank and Mary Scotti. He was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and attended the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University. On Nov. 28, 1943 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, he married Dorothy E. Dehler. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lou and Lester Alnwick of Hyde Park; son and daughter-in-law, Russell G. and Laura Scotti of Richboro, PA; five grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; three sisters, Marion Poluzzi, Viola Peluso and Carmela Scotti, all of Poughkeepsie and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, William, Frank, Paul and Adolph Scotti. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated July 19, 2008, 11:00am at St. Mary's Church, Poughkeepsie. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Salt Point Turnpike, Poughkeepsie.
