Jean Ann Kovarcik
HOPEWELL JUNCTION - Jean Ann Kovarcik, 68, a resident of the Town of East Fishkill, since 1972, formerly of Binghamton, died suddenly on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Since retiring from the personnel department at I.B.M., Poughkeepsie, in 1993, Jean had owned her own country crafts business, Petals & Lace, which she operated out of her home. A dedicated fan of local youth sports, especially within the Arlington School District, she was known to so many young athletes as "Nanny Parker", and could be found at football, soccer, and lacrosse games with homemade chocolate chip cookies for the players. Jean was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Born in Nanticoke, PA, on November 28, 1939, she was the daughter of Eugene and Dorothy Stanaway Thomas, who both survive in Binghamton. On August 12, 1972, she married John R. Kovarcik in Binghamton. Mr. Kovarcik survives at home. Other survivors include her son, Anthony Alise and his fiancee Michele Sardella of Binghamton; her daughter, Suzanne Parker and her husband Edward of LaGrange; her stepchildren, Carol Kovarcik and Robert Kovarcik, both of Danbury, CT; her grandchildren, Adriana and Gabriela Alise of Binghamton and Christopher, Jonathan, and Carlee Parker of LaGrange; her sister, Judy Roma and her husband Gene of Endicott, NY; her brother, Richard Thomas of Wayne, NJ; also several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the McHoul Funeral Home Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A funeral service will take place at 4 p.m. with Rev. Taylor Holbrook officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jean's memory may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 2 Gannett Dr., Suite LC, White Plains, NY 10604.

Maria Luisa Soto Murley
POUGHKEEPSIE - Maria Luisa Soto Murley, 78, of Poughkeepsie, died Thursday, July 17, 2008 at Vassar Brother Medical Center after a brief illness. She was a retired Bi-Lingual Teacher for the Beacon Elementary School, retiring in 1990. A 50 year resident of Poughkeepsie, she resided previously in Evanston, Il. She was a member of Lions Club and Retired Teachers Association. She also attended St. Martin de Porres Church. She was born in Moca, Puerto Rico, on June 26, 1930, the daughter of Don Anacleto Soto and Severina Gonzalez. She attended Puerto Rico Schools including the University of Puerto Rico and graduated from West Texas State with a B.S. degree. On December 27, 1952 in North Texas she married Philip Murley who predeceased her on September 5,2004. Survivors include children Tamara G. Murley and husband Julian Gomez, Poughkeepsie, Dale C. Murley and wife Brenda, LaSalle, CO., Norman P. Murley and wife Tammie L., Poughkeepsie, grandchildren Nicholas P. Murley, Alexandra T. Murley, Christopher N. Murley, Cassandra L. Murley, Aaron M. Murley, Alyssa M. Laube, Jessica J. Vargas, Stephanie D. Murley, Keith M. Murley, Kira E. Rathert and Jessica M. Gomez. She was predeceased by two sisters Gloria Soto Carter and Blanca Irma Seda. Calling hours will be held 4-8pm on Saturday, July 19th at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 218 Mill St. Poughkeepsie. Funeral Service will take place Saturday, July 19th at the funeral home at 6pm, with pastor Bruce Reedy officiating. Handicap entrance is located on Vassar Street in rear of funeral home. Burial will be at the Municipal Cemetery in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lions Club of Poughkeepsie in her name.

Retia K. Ransom
POUGHKEEPSIE - Born in Whitakers, NC, on Nov. 19, 1960, Retia K. Ransom passed away July 11, 2008. Retia was a long time resident in Poughkeepsie, NY. Retia's memories remains in the hearts and minds of her three children Richard C. Didymus Jr. & wife Jahida; their children Juan, Noah, Dante, Isis; Shanna Didymus, her son Taji, & Francis Ransom & wife Alexandra . Her mother Lucille Ransom & stepfather Albert C. Ransom Sr., Six siblings E. Geno Ransom & wife Ovia, Brian Ransom & wife Vera, Teiqua McRae, Michelle Ransom, Albert C. Ransom Jr. & wife Lena, L. Micheal Ransom & wife Tonya. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, relatives & friends. Retia has been predeceased by her grandmother Leona Lyons & father Raymond Alston. Memorial Service will take place at Vassar College, the Aula building on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 11 a.m. Arrangements by Quigley Funeral and Cremation Service 845-567-1788.

Dorothy Valerie Furdyna Visentin
VILLAGE OF WAPPINGERS FALLS - Dorothy Valerie Furdyna Visentin, 81, a 57 year resident of Wappingers Falls, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, has gone to her final resting place peacefully with her loving family by her side July 17, 2008. She had been an administrative assistant for Veteran's Vocational School in Troy, NY, having also worked at Wappingers High School. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America and of St. Mary's Church, Wappingers Falls. She was an accomplished cook, avid gardener and seamstress. Born in Troy, NY on Apr. 15, 1927, she was the daughter of Andrew Furdyna and Walerja Pugrabi. On May 13, 1951 in Holy Trinity Church, Troy, NY, she married Joseph J. Visentin, who survives at home. In addition to her husband, survivors include three children, Peter Joseph Visentin and wife, Sandy and their children, Stephen, Katie of Cheshire, CT; Joanne V. Castellanos-Cruz and son, Jaime J. Castellanos-Cruz, Jr. of Poughkeepsie; Susan Friedman and husband, David and their children, Bret and Alex Friedman, Hopewell Junction; sister-in-law, Louise Visentin Beck, Poughkeepsie; sister, Frances Toomajian, Troy, NY; brother, Theodora Furdyna, Albany, NY and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by son-in-law, Jaime J. Castellanos-Cruz, a grandson, Devin Jacob Friedman, three brothers, two sisters, 5 brothers-in-law, and sister-in-law, Theresa Ferris. Calling hours will be held Friday from 6-9pm at Delehanty Funeral Home, 64 E. Main St., Wappingers Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10am at St. Mary's Church, Clinton St., Wappingers Falls. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Dutchess County or American Cancer Society.

Evelyn Churton Blake
CODY - Evelyn Churton Blake, 84, a resident of Cody, WY, since 1995, passed away in Cody, WY, on July 11, 2008. Born in Poughkeepsie, NY, on October 20, 1923, she was the daughter of Frederick and Evelyn (Whittle) Churton. A graduate of Pine Plains Central School, she later graduated from Vassar Brothers School of Nursing in Poughkeepsie. During WWII, she was an army cadet nurse in Atlantic City, NJ. After the war, she married John Emmons Blake, Sr. who was a Staff Sgt in the US Army Air Force and received the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters; they were married on April 8, 1949 in Freedom Plains, NY. Mr. Blake predeceased his wife on January 11, 2006. Mrs. Blake worked as a registered nurse in New York, Florida, Michigan, and Wyoming, and was a volunteer in Literacy Volunteers of America for six years. She is survived by her son, John E. Blake IV and his wife Gretchen, her daughter, Janice Sabellico and her husband Steve, her granddaughter, Robin DiGiovanni and her husband Matt, three grandsons, Stephen Sabellico and Dan and Cody Blake, and her great-granddaughter, Anna DiGiovanni. A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, July 26th at 11 AM at the Hopewell Reform Church, Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society, Vassar Brothers Medical Center, 45 Reade Place, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Arrangements under the direction of Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main St, Pawling.

Franklin J. Cookingham
TOWN OF WAPPINGER - Franklin J. Cookingham, a resident of the Town of Wappinger, entered into rest, Thursday, July 17, 2008 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie. He was 82. Son of the late Vernon and Minnie Lawrence Cookingham, he was born October 10, 1925 in Pine Plains. On September 7, 1946 he married the former Mildred Moyer in Amenia Union. Mrs. Cookingham survives at home in Wappingers Falls. He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army, 103 Infantry Division. While fighting in Vogues, France he stepped on a land mine and lost his leg on November 30, 1944. He was honorably discharged on October 10, 1945. He earned numerous medals including the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with One Bronze Campaign Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart. Mr. Cookingham worked at IBM, Poughkeepsie for 35 years prior to his retirement. He was proud to have worked on the first mainframes. He was a member of the South Amenia Presbyterian Church, the American Legion in Arlington and Dover, the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the IBM Quarter Century Club. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing and deer hunting. In addition to his wife of sixty-one years, Mildred E. Cookingham, he is survived by his children, L. Peter Cookingham and his wife, June of West Edmenston, New York, Gail Seymour and her husband, James of Poughkeepsie, Joann McQuade and her husband, John of Rimrock, Arizona, Donna Smith and her husband, Randy of Salisbury, North Carolina, F. Jay Cookingham and his companion, Barbara Meade of Nichols, New York and Andrew Cookingham and his wife, Stefani of Essex Junction, Vermont; his sisters, Fannie Place of Pine Plains, Alice Chase and Marion Peterson both of Sharon, Connecticut; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by seven brothers and two sisters. A graveside service will be held at 11 am on Monday, July 21, 2008 at South Amenia Cemetery, Amenia Union Road, Wassaic, NY In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made the American Heart Association, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, New York 13220-3049.

Vivian G. Hyatt
NELSONVILLE - Vivian G. Hyatt, age 86, of Nelsonville, NY, died on July 17, 2008 at Bethel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Croton-onHudson, NY. Born in Brewster, NY, she was the daughter of the late Raymond W. and Gladys S. (Smalley) Godfrey. She was the widow of the late George W. Hyatt, Jr. who predeceased her in 1982. Mrs. Hyatt was factory worker at the former Sonatone Battery in Cold Spring, NY. A member of the Cold Spring Baptist church and Philipstown Seniors. Survivors include four daughters Beverly Hall of Callaway, VA, Barbara Wright of Keene Valley, NY Linda (Barry) Bayly of Rocky Mt., VA and Carol Pecor of Hudson, FL. Two sons George R. (Mary Lu) Hyatt of Nelsonville, NY and Donald (Laurie) Hyatt of Cold Spring, NY. Four sisters Ruth Roth of CT., Marion Burdick, Dorothy Brady both of Brewster, NY, and Lois Taylor of CT. Two Brothers George Godfrey of Brewster, NY and Ronald Godfrey of Scranton, PA. Twenty two grandchildren, twenty nine Great grandchildren and four Great Great-Grandchildren also survive. Two brothers Charles and Raymond Godfrey pre-deceased her. Funeral services will take place at the Clinton Funeral Home 21 Parrott Street Cold Spring, NY on Monday July 21, 2008 at 10 AM. Interment will follow in the Cold Spring Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Sunday from 5 to 8 PM. Contributions in Mrs. Hyatt's name may be made to Philipstown Volunteer Ambulance Corp., 14 Cedar Street, Cold Spring, NY 10516.
