Sara Pironi
May 23, 1998 - August 10, 2016
Sara Pironi, 18, of Highland, passed away peacefully in the morning hours of Wednesday, August 10, 2016, following her courageous struggle with sarcoma. Born in Rhinebeck on May 23, 1998, and raised in Highland, Sara attended Highland Central Schools and proudly received her Advanced Regents diploma in June 2016. Both a scholar and an athlete, Sara was a member of the Honor Society and award winner at the State Science Olympiad as well as a three-sport varsity athlete in soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. She was active all-year round on a travel soccer team. Sara loved music: she played trumpet in band and enjoyed seeing shows on Broadway or attending concerts with friends. Sara loved nature, and could always be found with a camera in hand to capture its beauty. Sara planned to enroll at State University of New York (SUNY) New Paltz this fall.
Sara’s many accomplishments, though impressive, are only a small part of what made Sara exceptional. What made Sara truly amazing was her intensely loving spirit. Sara loved fiercely: she loved life in the bloom of health and in the midst of her illness. Sara’s illness did nothing to diminish the light of her spirit and her endlessly deep love for her immediate family-her mother, father, brother, dog Casey, and cat Sammy-and for the larger family of the entire Highland community. In the midst of her own illness, she never failed to show up for her loved ones. When her dear friend Hobie Simpson struggled with sarcoma himself, she was at his side, encouraging him never to give up the fight. Her love of life, her love of her family and friends, her grace and humor were apparent to even the most casual acquaintance. Even in the most difficult of circumstances, Sara was a beacon of grace, humility, and quiet dignity in our lives. Though Sara was with us a short while, she lived a full life in her 18 years, and she will forever inspire us all to live our lives more fully, more graciously, more deeply.
During her 18 month battle with cancer, Sara never gave in and never gave up. It was Sara’s wish that her fight be continued, not in the form of mourning those we have lost, but rather dedicating our efforts to helping those still valiantly battling sarcoma. As was her life, so shall her legacy be one of kindness, selflessness and love.
Sara is survived by her parents, Teresa and Looris Pironi, her brother, Luca Pironi; her paternal grandparents, George and Flora Pironi; her maternal grandparents Robert and Rita Ratelle; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins. She is also survived by her “other families”, as well as by countless friends and teammates. Sara will not be forgotten.
A celebration of Sara’s life will be held on Sunday August 14th from 2-6pm at Novellas New Paltz, 2 Terwilliger Lane, New Paltz, NY 12561.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to SARASTRONG Foundation, 141 Macks Lane, Highland, NY 12528.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 38 Main St., Highland, NY 12528.
