Burton J. Bathrick
HYDE PARK - Burton J. Bathrick, 77, a lifelong area resident, died Friday, July 25, 2008 at Vassar Bros. Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Mr. Bathrick was a Senior Assembly Specialist at IBM, Poughkeepsie. He retired in 1991 after 27 years of service. Burton belonged to the IBM Quarter Century Club, and the National Chapter of AARP. He enjoyed fishing, collecting coins, and playing the Sweepstakes on his computer. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Born in Rhinebeck on April 12, 1931, he was the son of the late Clarence and Alma Smith Bathrick. On May 6, 1956 in St. Andrews Episcopal Church, New Paltz, he married Elizabeth Hasbrouck. Mrs. Bathrick survives at home. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Deborah A. Kane and husband, Frank, of Hyde Park; Linda J. Mason and husband, Michael, of Briarcliff Manor; and Christina M. Dormeyer and husband, Richard, of Hadley, NY; a sister, Jeanann Bathrick of Red Hook; a brother, Clarence Bathrick of Clinton Corners; four grandsons, Nicholas, Joseph, and David Kane, and Ian Mason; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park. Funeral services will be 10 am, Friday, August 1st at the funeral home. Rev. Robert Thompson-Gee will be officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the family plot in Union Cemetery of Hyde Park. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

Joe Bocchino
CITY OF POUGHKEEPSIE - Joe Bocchino, 70, of the City of Poughkeepsie, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie. A local resident since 1967, he had previously resided in Italy. Mr. Bocchino owned and operated Joe B's Barber Shop in Poughkeepsie. He served in the Italian Army and was a member of Holy Trinity Church. Joe loved his daughters and grandchildren and he liked to garden. He loved his work as a Barber and his clients loved him. He was very active, he loved to travel to Italy to visit his family. Born on January 19, 1938 in Beneventto Italy, he was the son of Angelo and Assunta Nardone Bocchino. He attended schools in Italy. On January 25, 1959 in Italy, he married Franca Filoia, she predeceased him on October 10, 2001. He is survived by his daughter Tina Bocchino of the Town of Poughkeepsie; his daughter and son-in-law, Ivana and Mark Boland of the Town of Poughkeepsie; and his grandchildren, Anthony and Michael Pena and Joseph and Marissa Boland. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 from 4pm to 8pm at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 9:45 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church. Burial will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.

John L. Cervone
John L. Cervone, 89, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He was a lifelong local resident and attended Poughkeepsie High School and Vocational Trade School. John was an electrical contractor, retiring in 1980. A communicant of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, John was a senior member of the Italian Center, a charter member and past president of the Dutchess County War Memorial Committee, a charter member and past president of the Battery B & C 156th Field Artillery Association, a charter member of the Poughkeepsie Seniors Softball League, where he played into his 80's, a senior member of the Arlington American Legion Post 1302, past appointments of the District, State and National level of the VFW, including Post Commander of the Dutchess County VFW Post 170. During World War II, John proudly served in the European Theater, where he was awarded 3 Bronze Stars, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, National Defense Medal and Good Conduct Medal. John was born on December 2, 1918 in Poughkeepsie to Alessandro and Pellegrina Cervone. On December 12, 1943, he married Jennie Bracone, who survives. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Louis and his wife, Virginia of Poughkeepsie; his sister-in-law, Jeanette(widow of Harmon), several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. He was predeceased by his parents, Alessandro and Pellegrina Cervone, his sister, Mary Potenza and her husband, Charles, his brother, Joseph and his wife, Ida, his brother, Harmon, his brother, Patrick and his wife, Antoinette(Toni), all of Poughkeepsie. John devoted his life to helping veterans in need. He has logged many thousands of hours volunteering at Castle Point, where he volunteered in the Clothing Room and Food Pantry Room, he assisted with computer training for veterans, helped organize the PT Phone Program, the VFW soft ice cream program, the annual patient barbecue, annual patients' Christmas Dinner at the Culinary Institute of America, annual patients' day at the Renegades, organized veterans flu shot clinics, mobile health clinics, and VFW Day at Castle Point each year. He was awarded "Volunteer of the Year" in 2007. He helped place flags on veterans' graves at St. Peter's Cemetery every Memorial Day. In 1984, he collaborated with John K. Rinaldi and Stanley Still, Sr. in planning and erecting the Dutchess County War Memorial in the Town of Poughkeepsie. Not a week went by that some veteran or their family didn't call seeking help on a problem they were having. John would always direct them to the proper contact and made sure that each problem got resolved. In December of 2005, John was honored at a Testimonial Dinner at VFW Post 170 in Poughkeepsie and was presented with citations from the US House of Representatives, the New York State Senate, and the New York Assembly for his 50 years of work and dedication to the veteran community. The assembly hall at Post 170 was formally named in his honor. John was an avid fisherman and had not missed an opening day since his return from the military service in 1945. On April 1, 1995, on the occasion of his 50th consecutive opening day, he was honored by his nephews and friends with a stretch limo ride to his favorite fishing holes. John will be dearly missed by all of whom he touched in his life. The veterans community of Dutchess County has lost a true hero, friend and role model. Our world is a much better place for having him pass through and he will forever remain in our hearts and thoughts. Calling hours will be Thursday, July 31st from 4-8pm at William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie. VFW Post 170 will hold services along with American Legion Post 1302 and Italian Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday, August 1st at 9:45am at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, 775 Main Street, Poughkeepsie. Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Peter's Cemetery with full military honors.

Samuel Cooper
SEALY, TX - Samuel Cooper, 55, passed away on July 24, 2008 in Houston, Texas. Samuel was born on July 10, 1953 in Beacon, to Jack Louis and Lucrecia (Cambrelen) Cooper. He was raised in Beacon and was a member of the Springfield Baptist Church where his grandmother, Rev. Mattie Cooper, was Founder and Pastor. He graduated from Beacon High School. After high school, Sam followed in the footsteps of his older brother, Jack and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. During his time of service with the United States Marine Corps, Sam completed courses in Basic Electronics, Tactical Air Operations Central Repair, Technician Theory, Tactical Air Operation Central Technician and Senior Instructor. Awards bestowed upon Sam by the United States Marine Corps included the Rifle Expert Badge 2, the Good Conduct Medal with 2 Stars, and the Pistol Marksmanship Badge. In 1979, Sam completed the United States Marine Corps Non-commissioned Officers Leadership School. He went on to also graduate from the Commandant of the Marine Corps for Formal Schools Instructor Course. During his final year of service in the Marine Corps, Sam completed the curriculum for the Career Course Class 4-88 at the Staff Non-commissioned Officer Academy. While in the United States Marine Corps, Sam achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and in September 1988, he received an Honorable Discharge. Sam attended the College of the Desert in Twentynine Palms, CA. Following his military career, Sam continued his education, obtaining his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Technical Writing from Parkwood University. Sam continued to serve his country by working for the United States Department of Homeland Security, Transportation Security Administration, as a training instructor at the William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, TX. On April 4, 2004, Sam was joined in marriage to Cynthia Schaer with a ceremony held at their home in Sealy. He always enjoyed his home, making constant improvements, even while planning his next projects. Sam loved to travel and lived for periods in California, North Carolina, and Hawaii, and visited Germany and Turkey. He had a love for life which involved seeing different places and meeting new people. He was an avid motorcyclist, having made several rides cross country from California to New York and he also loved to ride his bike. He also loved electronics and tinkering with mechanical devices. Sam was a true Marine that "Towed the Line" all of his life. He was a quiet-natured man that always made you feel special and he lived by his motto, "All in Due Time and Order." He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Schaer of Sealy; his mother, Lucrecia Cooper of Glenham; sisters, Elisa Cooper-Jackson of Dumfries, VA; Gladys L. Cooper of St. Augustine, FL; Brynie M. Cooper of Poughkeepsie and Susie Cooper-Minor of Raleigh, NC, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends He was predeceased by his father, Jack Louis Cooper, Sr. and brother, Jack Louis Cooper, Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Springfield Baptist Church, Rev. Mattie Cooper and Jack Cooper Sr. Scholarship Fund, c/o The Community Foundation of Dutchess County, 80 Washington Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. (845-4523077). A Memorial Service for Sam was held on Monday, July 28, 2008 at 1pm at the Knesek Brothers Funeral Home in Sealy TX with the Rev. Mark Anderson officiating. Funeral services will be held on August 1, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Springfield Baptist Church, 8 Mattie Cooper Square, Beacon, with the Rev. Ronald O. Perry officiating. Sam will be interred at the Fishkill Rural Cemetery in Fishkill near his father and brother. Funeral Services are under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Chapel, 768 Fourth Street, Sealy TX and the Brutus W. Hodge Funeral Home, 13 Chambers Street, Newburgh, NY.

Dr. Harlan J. Howlett
RED HOOK - On July 26, 2008 Dr. Harlan J. Howlett went home to God surrounded by his adoring family. Harlan was born January 15, 1924 to William S. Howlett and Lillie Bush Howlett in Pulaski, NY. Harlan enlisted in the Army in 1942. He served in "C" Battery, 33rd Field Artillery, 1st Infantry Division, in the European Theater of Operations. He was awarded battle stars for Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. Harlan was also awarded the Bronze Star. Harlan graduated from Cornell in 1951 with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. He practiced in Pleasant Valley for nearly 40 years. On June 22, 1948 he married Ethel Nied. She predeceased him on January2, 1998. Harlan was a member of the NY State Veterinary Medical Society, St. John's Reformed Church in Red Hook, and a former member of the Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church. Over the years Harlan was involved in several community theater groups as a talented actor, stage manager, and set designer. A talented woodworking hobbyist, he restored antique furniture but specialized in the restoration of Old Town canvas and wood canoes. Harlan is survived by his four daughters: Kim Rosado of Staatsburg; Candace Shyer and husband Eric of Stephentown; Melissa Levy and husband Mike of Red Hook; and Coral Howlett of Saugerties. He is also survived by his sisters: Lois Roberts of Pulaski, Coral Rinaldo of Oneida, his brothers: William S. Howlett and wife Naomi of Texas, Charles Howlett and wife Marianne of Adams Center, and Carl Howlett of Pulaski, his seven grandchildren: William Rosado and wife Sabrina of Staatsburg, ETN Daniel Shyer of Virginia, Alec Rosado of California, Margaret Barie and husband Eric of Rouses Point, Sarah Grundman and husband Rob of Albany, Kimberly Shyer of Hudson, and Betsy Levy of Red Hook. Harlan also leaves one great-grandchild, Julius L. Rosado and one more on the way. Harlan is survived by many cousins, nephews, and nieces. A brother, Alfred, predeceased him. Harlan's family wishes to thank the following who treated him with respect, dignity, and great skill: Dr. Leopoldo Abis, Dr. Dmitri Alden, Dr. James Wing, and Hospice. There will be a private burial at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be sent in Harlan's memory to one of the following charities: Red Cross, Cornell University, or Hospice. Arrangements are under the direction of Burnett & White Funeral Homes, 7461 S. Broadway, Red Hook, NY.

Jacqueline Jenkins
POUGHKEEPSIE - Jacqueline Jenkins, born in Harlem, New York, on January 9, 1954 and was the sixth child to the union of the late Mary and James Benbow. She was a devoted mother to Shanequa Del Valle and Robert Jenkins, Jr. and loving grandmother to Emilio Del Valle and Angel Cruz. She adored her children and grandchildren. They were blessings to her and they will continue to honor and cherish her memory. Jacqueline was raised in Harlem and in the Bronx, New York where she attended Morris High School. After receiving her GED, Jacqueline attended a Clerical Training Program and then Bronx Community College. Thereafter, she began work as a data entry clerk at Covenant House and several years later secured a position as an Administrative Assistant at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. In the Claims Dept at the Waldorf, Jacqueline proved herself to be a hardworking, exceptionally dedicated, employee and was a dear friend to her co-workers. Jacqueline moved to Poughkeepsie in 1998. After several years of commuting to work in NYC, Jacqueline became disabled. Even while disabled Jacqueline worked as a one- on-one aid in the Poughkeepsie School District where she was actively involved with the Parents, Teachers, Association, Fund Raising and School Events. Jacqueline's extended family includes her ex-husband Robert Jenkins, her sisters, Jeanette and Deborah and brothers, Joseph and Johnathan; Four siblings, James Benbow, Juanita Newton, Joanne Sanjurjo and Jean Benbow, preceded Jacqueline in death. Her extended family also includes a wealth of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. As well, Jacqueline leaves behind a host of friends such as Sharon Williams, Aliette Bouchard, Andrea Williams, Denise Wallis, Michelle Richardson, Gail Floyd, Barbara Anderson, Wilhelmina Washington, Gloria Hicks, Tonia Grant and Kim Freeman. Visitation will be Tuesday July 29, 2008 10:00am to 11:00am at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church 2611 South Avenue Wappingers Falls, New York. Services will begin at 11:00am. Reverend Dr. Edward L. Hunt, Officiating. Interment will be at St. Peter's Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, New York. Rhodes Funeral Homes, 43 Fairview Avenue, Poughkeepsie, New York 12601.

Richard E. King
FISHKILL - Richard E. King, 74, of Fishkill and formerly of Queens, NY, died July 25, 2008 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie. He was a retired autobody specialist with Dominick Truck Sales, Brooklyn, NY. Richard was an avid bowler and bowled in many leagues in Queens. Born Feb. 14, 1934 in Trinidad, West Indies, he was the son of the late Richard Fergusson and Rosalie King. He was married to Dorothy M. Smith King, who survives him. In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Sharon Alexander, Anne Alexander, Suzette Berkeley, Gail Whitman, Lybbia King-Cabello, Ray Victor and Roger Victor; as well as a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 31, 2008 from 2-6pm at Libby Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Teller Ave., Beacon. Services will take place at 6:00pm following the visitation. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 42 Reade Place, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Arrangements are under the direction of Libby Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Teller Ave., Beacon, NY.
