James Carl McAvoy, Sr.
WASSAIC, NY - James Carl McAvoy Sr., longtime resident of Wassaic, N.Y., passed away July 26, 2008 at "The Kent" in Kent, CT. James was born in Sharon, CT. December 11, 1938 to James and Grace (Silvernail) McAvoy. He attended Sharon and Housatonic Valley Regional High Schools. At age 17, he enlisted in the army doing basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, advanced training at Fort Lewis, Washington completing tour of duty in Alaska. He worked for Tri-Wall Container and Weyerhauser Co. in Wassaic, N.Y. for about 37 years until the companies closed, then Taconic DDSO until he retired. Jim loved hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. On Sept. 2, 1960 he married Bernice "June" Valyou who survives at home. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons: James McAvoy Jr. and wife Sue, Copake, NY, Thomas McAvoy, Wassaic, and David and wife Karrie McAvoy of Winsted. He is also survived by a brother, Robert McAvoy and wife Barbara of St. Albans, Maine and a grandson James McAvoy III, and wife Alicia, of Dover Plains, NY. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Gene. Funeral services were celebrated on Tuesday at 1pm at the Kenny Funeral Home 41 Main Street Sharon. Burial will follow at the Ellsworth Cemetery. Memorial contributions to The Kent, 46 maple St., Kent, Ct. 06757.

Doris A. Middlebrook
POUGHKEEPSIE - Doris A. Middlebrook, 82, a local resident since 2001, formerly of Batavia, NY, died Monday, July 28, 2008 at home. Mrs. Middlebrook was a finance clerk for the NYS Division of Parole in Albany, retiring in 1986. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star as a Matron in Attica, NY in 1962; she was a Grand Representative for New York, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island from 1968 to 1969; and a member of The Guilderland O.E.S. and Unionvale Senior Citizen's Club. She was a loving mother and grandmother and she enjoyed traveling and playing cards. Born Aug. 14, 1925 in Batavia, NY, she was the daughter of Oren and Charlotte Hummel Ball. On Aug. 9, 1947, in Batavia, NY, she married Richard Middlebrook. Mr. Middlebrook died Feb. 15, 1992. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Susan Middlebrook of Albion, NY; Tim and Julianne Middlebrook of Poughkeepsie; her brother, Charles Ball of Saratoga Springs, NY; her sisters, Ruth Goodenbury of Batavia, NY; Florence Horton of Rochester, NY; grandchildren, Stephen, Nicholas and Andrew Middlebrook; great-granddaughter, Ava; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers, Fred and Robert Ball; her sister, Lorraine Brumber; and her grandson, Todd. Calling hours will be 3-7 p.m., Thursday, July 31, at William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie. The Order of the Eastern Star will hold services at 6:30 p.m and funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Graveside services and burial will be 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 1, in the Forest Hills Cemetery, Attica, NY. Memorial donations may be made to Beekman Library, Town Center Blvd., Hopewell Junction, NY 12533.

Richard A. Watkins
POUGHKEEPSIE - Richard A. Watkins, 74, a life long resident of Poughkeepsie, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Mr. Watkins retired from the Local 1000 Construction Union in 1995. He was a member of the Local 1000. Mr. Watkins served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He was a member of Holy Trinity Church. Born Oct. 28, 1933 in Poughkeepsie, he was the son of Harold and Hazel Robinson Watkins. He attended Poughkeepsie Schools. On Sept. 4, 1955, in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Poughkeepsie, he married Marie H. Pesano. Mrs. Watkins died Feb. 4, 2006. Survivors include three daughters, Nancy Rhodes and her husband, Michael of Poughkeepsie; Lori Sucato and her husband, James of Highland; Susan Watkins and her companion, Daniel Kozlowski of Poughkeepsie; four brothers, Edward Watkins, Donald Watkins, Albert Watkins and Charles Watkins; seven grandchildren, Michael Rhodes, Jr., Ashley Rhodes, Justina Moran, Krista Moran, Jalena Kozlowski, Ryan Kozlowski, Jayme Kozlowski, and several great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Jayme Watkins, her brother, Ralph Watkins, and two sisters, Dorothy Jennings and Barbara Emmett. Calling hours will be 7-9pm Friday, Aug. 1, at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 218 Mill St., Poughkeepsie. Wheelchair entrance is in the rear of the funeral home on Vassar St. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:45am Saturday, Aug. 2, at Holy Trinity Church. Burial will be in St. Peters Cemetery.

Lyman Guy "Sandy" Barton
WAPPINGERS FALLS – Lyman Guy "Sandy" Barton IV, 65, of Wappingers Falls, NY, died peacefully August 1, 2008, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center with his loving family by his side. Born May 17, 1943, in Plattsburgh, NY, he was the son of the late Lyman Guy Barton III and Elizabeth Cook Barton. Guy was a graduate of Trinity Pawling School, where he played varsity lacrosse, football and basketball. He also earned the honor of being appointed head prefect in his senior year and served as alumnae class agent until 2000. He attended Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, PA; earned his B.S. degree in Education from SUNY Plattsburgh; his M.S. degree in Education and Certificate of Educational Administration and Supervision from SUNY New Paltz. Guy's entire 31 year career was spent in the Wappingers Central School District as an elementary teacher and administrator. He retired as principal of Evans Elementary School in 1998. During his tenure as principal of Fishkill Elementary School, he helped to develop programs which led to the school being awarded the 1988 National Drug Free Model School Award. He received this award in the Rose Garden from President George H. Bush. Guy also was chosen by the National Education Department to serve as a review panelist and site visitor for the National Drug Free Recognition Program in 1990 and 1994. He was an avid golfer but also enjoyed tennis, woodworking and cooking. He also spent many years coaching in the Town of Wappingers girls' softball junior and senior leagues for his daughter, and was active in the Wappingers Lions Club and Jaycees. He was a die-hard Notre Dame football fan. Some of his happiest moments were sitting in the stadium watching The Fighting Irish and watching his daughter march on the field. On November 7, 1964, at St. Mary's Church in Lockport, NY, Guy married Margaret Schrankel, who survives at home. In addition to his wife, Marge, he is survived by his daughter, Catherine (Kate) Bento and her husband, Kevin of Newburgh, NY; his sisters, Barbara Adam of Fredericksburg, VA and Deborah Barton of Dammeron Valley, Utah; and the absolute joys of his life, grandsons Joaquim "Jake" Barton Bento and Joseph "Joey" Charles Bento of Newburgh. He is also survived by an aunt, uncle, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at St. Columba Church, Hopewell Junction. Interment will follow in Wappingers Rural Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Guy's memory to the American Heart Association. Arrangements are under the direction of the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction.

Louise Cynthia Morgan
BEACON, NY - Louise Cynthia Morgan departed this life, for life eternal Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Louise was born December 1, 1930 to the parentage of the late Johnson H. Morgan and Leatice King Morgan in Beacon, New York. Louise was a 28 year resident of Beacon, New York. After 22 years of service Louise retired as a postal worker for the United States Postal Service. Louise loved life, her journey took her to New York City where she resided and was a proud member of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, New York for over 50 years. She was a very active member in her community to name a few accomplishments a Golden Heritage Life Member of the NAACP, life member of National Association of Colored Women Clubs, Inc., and Les'Seours Amiables Civic Club. Louise is survived by the love of her life, her loving daughter Shaune Poole (Marvin) of Oswego, IL.; two grandchildren Kamryn and Jaylen; four brother Giles Morgan (Catherine), Poughkeepsie, NY, Edward Morgan (Gayle), Wappingers Falls, New York, Albert Morgan (Gloria), Columbia, SC, Charles Morgan, Poughkeepsie, NY; two sisters Diane M. Simmons and Beverly A. Morgan both of Beacon, NY. She is predeceased by three brothers; Leonard Morgan, Donald Morgan, Johnson Morgan, Jr. Visitation will be Thursday, August 7, 2008 9:00a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, 139 Main Street, Beacon, New York. Services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Frederick H. Mills, Officiating. Interment will be at Fishkill Rural Cemetery in Fishkill, New York. Bernadette J. Murphy
UNION VALE – Bernadette J. Murphy, a resident of Union Vale, was born in Yonkers to James A. and Catherine Cahill Waldron. She passed away on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at Northern Westchester Hospital. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School as well as the Cochran School of Nursing at St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers and Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, NY. She moved to Somers, NY where she and her husband Tom raised their children and lived for 30 years. Bernadette spent 50 years at her beloved profession of nursing, the last 25 years at Lincoln Hall in Somers, as Administrative Director of the Medical Department where the boys in her care called her "Mother Murphy", as she had an understanding heart and a listening ear. Bernadette is survived by her deeply beloved, best friend and husband Thomas; her cherished children: daughters Diane (Philip) Kilgo of Norfolk, VA; Beth (Joseph) McLeary of Memphis, TN; Janet (Peter) Almasi of Poughkeepsie and her two sons, John (Regina) Sweeney of Mahopac, NY; and David Sweeney of Albany, NY. She leaves her precious grandchildren: Christopher (Jillian) Reid of Norfolk, VA; Emma and Hannah Sweeney of Mahopac, NY; and Murphy McLeary of Memphis, TN; two precious great-grandchildren: Elijah and Adriana Reid of Norfolk, VA. She was predeceased by her brother James and her sister Mary Elizabeth Waldron. Her brother Raymond resides in Fort Myers, FL. She leaves dear cousins, nephews, nieces and her beloved sisters in Christ: Marie, Jeanette, her soul mate Peggy; and the "Ya-Ya Sisterhood" from Cochran. Bernadette loved her God, her family, her friends old and new, and her families from St. Denis and Blessed Kateri. Her Irish smile, her quick wit and her ability to survive, with God's help, all the "bumps in the road of life" made her an inspiration to many. She loved her books, her music, her plants and her crossword puzzles, football, baseball and Frank Sinatra. In addition, she also loved her four legged friends: Steele (Norfolk), Junior (Poughkeepsie), Xena, Zoe and Theo Moran; and the birds who came every day to the feeders and the front yard. She loved the deer that ate her plants and bushes and the cat that patrolled the yard keeping away the critters she didn't love. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction where calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction. She will be buried in St. Denis Cemetery where friends are encouraged to stop by to share a prayer, a story or a laugh. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Union Vale Rescue Squad.

Laura Romano
LAGRANGEVILLE - Laura Romano, 91 years old, a longtime LaGrangeville resident, formerly of the Bronx, passed away to be with her Lord so peacefully on August 2, 2008 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Laura was born in Bronxville, NY on May 9, 1917 the daughter of the late Francesio and Philmena Manzo Annunziato. On February 14, 1942, she married the late Luciano Romano, who predeceased her on October 23, 1995, after 53 years of marriage. Laura was a devoted mother, loving grandmother and great-grandmother. She deeply enjoyed the company of her great-grandchildren; they were the joy of her life. Her greatest accomplishment in Life was her devotion to the Lord. She was a member of the Full Gospel Center, LaGrangeville. Laura is survived by her daughter Virginia Leonardi and her husband Frederick of LaGrangeville and three grandchildren: Rev. Rick Leonardi, Gari Leonardi, and Brooke LeonardiCapo. Her six grandchildren also survive her: Brandon, Reilly, Dominick, Austin, Gianna, Christopher; and one sister: Connie DelVecchio of Bronxville, NY. She was predeceased by her brother Luciano Annunziato and one sister Yolanda Michalski. Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 4th from 3-5 & 7-9 pm at the Full Gospel Center, Route 55, LaGrangeville. Funeral Services will be held for Laura 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 5th at the church, followed by entombment at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery Mausoleum. Arrangements are entrusted to the care and under direction of the Robert H. Auchmoody Funeral Home, 900 Route 82, Hopewell Junction.
