Joseph K. Brown
HIGHLAND, NY - Joseph K. Brown, 47, a longtime resident of Highland, died Monday, August 4, 2008 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie. Mr. Brown was born August 30, 1960 in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was the son of Arthur C. Brown Jr. and Delores Miller Brown. Mr. Brown worked for Staff Lighting in Highland and was an avid dart player. On October 3, 1998 in New Paltz, he married Christine L. Tillson. Mrs. Brown survives at home in Highland. Other survivors include a step daughter: Cynthia Grammas of Highland, a sister: Jackie Sitzenstock of Carmel, NY, a brother: Brian A. Brown of Highland, a niece, two aunts, and two uncles, and his loving birds, Lucky and Smokey and his parakeets. He was predeceased by his brother: Arthur C. Brown III. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 45 Reade Place, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. Calling hours are Wed., Aug. 6, 2008 7-9 pm at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral Home Inc., 38 Main St., Highland, NY. Prayers will be offered during calling hours. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

Elmer H. Crans
TOWN OF LAGRANGE - Elmer H. Crans, 89, a resident of the Town of LaGrange since 1947, formerly of Germantown, NY, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008 at The Pines in Poughkeepsie. Mr. Crans was a Lighting Engineer and Consultant for Central Hudson in Poughkeepsie, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the American Legion #1302, Charter Member and past President of the Mid-Hudson Illuminating Society, a member of the Quarter Century Club of Central Hudson and a member of the Arlington Reformed Church, where he was an Elder for many years. He played semi-pro baseball in Germantown, was active with the Boy Scouts and played dartball with Arlington Reformed Church. Mr. Crans served in the US Army during World War II. He was an outdoorsman, who enjoyed fishing and golfing. He and his wife would get in the car and travel throughout the west and Florida. Born Dec. 18, 1918, in Germantown, he was the son of the late Milton and Edith Pratt Crans. He was a graduate of Bliss Electrical Institute in Washington, DC. On May 28, 1940, in McDonald, OH, he married Grace L. Winfield. Mrs. Crans survives at home. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by his son and his significant other, David Crans and Janice Bovee of Durango, CO; his son and daughter-in-law, Winfield and Marianna Crans of Kingston; his daughter and son-in-law, Gretchen and Terry Kiester of W. Oneonta, NY; three grandchildren; and a nephew. He was predeceased by his brother, Preston Crans. Calling hours will be 1-2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 8, at William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., at the funeral home. Burial will be in the LaGrange Rural Cemetery with Military Honors. Memorial donations may be made to the Arlington Reformed Church, 22 Raymond Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603 or Parkinson's Association, 135 Park Ave., Staten Island, NY 10305.

James D. McNamara III
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA - James D. McNamara III, 36, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2008 at UCSD Medical Center, San Diego, CA. Jim was born on Feb. 12, 1972 in Poughkeepsie. Jim attended the University of San Diego, receiving a B.S. in Political Science. Subsequently, he received his Juris Doctorate from the University of San Diego School of Law. Jim was a partner with the firm Coughlin, Stoia, Geller, Rudman & Robbins LLP, specializing in consumer insurance and financial fraud class action lawsuits. He is survived by his devoted wife Jacqueline, mother and father James & Alicia Dewar McNamara, brother Stephen and wife Donna, grandmother Alice Dewar and many caring aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. In honor of his life, visitation will be 4-9pm, Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at the Alhiser-Comer Funeral Home, 225 South Broadway in Escondido. A memorial service will be held at the Alhiser-Comer Chapel at 11am on Thursday, August 7, 2008. Burial will follow in the Dearborn Memorial Park, 14361 Tierra Bonita Rd, in Poway. The family suggests that memorials be made to the James McNamara Memorial Fund at Wells Fargo Bank, account 2093955702.

Patricia J. Kelly
WAPPINGERS FALLS - Patricia J. Kelly, 59, a resident of Wappingers Falls, for 26 years and formerly of Morton, IL, and the Bronx, died on Monday, August 4, 2008 at her home surrounded by her family. Born in the Bronx on March 25, 1949, she was the daughter of Michael and Helen McGinn Kelly. She was employed as an instructor at Dutchess Community College until her retirement in 2007. Pat was a parishioner of St. Columba Church, Hopewell Junction where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was a volunteer for Hospice and enjoyed gardening, arts and crafts. On October 21, 1972 in the Bronx, she married John P. Kelly who survives at home. She is also survived by her daughter, Eileen M. Kelly; her sister, Ann M. Kachur of Vernon, NJ; her brothers, Michael J. Kelly of Orefield, PA and Peter J. Kelly of Chesapeake, VA; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Malachy F. Kelly, in 1990. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 45 Reade Place, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.

Donald F. Palmateer
ESSEX COUNTY - Donald F. Palmateer, 83, of Essex County, NY, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008. Born Dec. 31, 1924, he was raised and resided in Ardonia/Clintondale, though retired and presently lived in Essex County. Mr. Palmateer worked for the MidHudson Bridge Authority as maintenance and a toll collector and was an ordained Minister later in life. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Donald is predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Thelma, who died in December 2007. He was also predeceased by his granddaughter, Lisa Ann in 1988. Survivors include his son, Donald E. Sr. and his wife, Barbara, four grandchildren, Donald Jr., Gary Wm., Christine, Jesse Lee along with several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Friday, at Sutton Funeral Home, Clintondale. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, at the funeral home. Burial will be Lloyd Rural Cemetery, Highland.

Hans R. Rottmann
POUGHKEEPSIE - Hans R. Rottmann, beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather, and loyal friend to many, passed away peacefully at home on August 5th. He was born on August 10, 1925 in Erfurt, Germany. He spent his youth in Stadtilm, Thuringen, and went on to earn a Master's Degree in Physics at the University of Jena and a Doctorate in Nuclear Physics at the University of Heidelberg in 1957. Dr. Rottmann married Kerttu Saukko in Finland in 1959. He leaves behind his wife and their three children: daughter Lisa LaVigna and husband Claude and grandchildren Joe and Nicole, Albany, NY; daughter Tina Mrazik and husband Tony and grandchildren Peter, Sophia, and Samuel, Niskayuna, NY; and son Hans E. Rottmann and wife Molly and grandchildren Hans, Max, and Jude, Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Rottmann led a life that was heavily influenced by both WW II and the rise of Communism which resulted in the creation of East and West Germany. As a youth, he served in the German army and was seriously wounded. In 1953, he took part in the uprising against the Communist Regime in East Germany. For this action, he was imprisoned for one year. Upon release, he escaped to West Germany. His experiences in Europe gave him a keen appreciation of the benefits of democracy. He devoted much time and energy to spreading the message that democracy requires the active involvement of the electorate. In 1958, he left Germany to teach physics at the Instituto Tecnol-gico in Monterrey, Mexico. He came to the United States in 1959 and worked at Owens Illinois Glass Company in Toledo, Ohio before moving to Poughkeepsie in 1963. He worked as a physicist for IBM until 1991. After retiring, Dr. Rottmann found many ways to enrich the life of his community. He particularly enjoyed talking with high school students about his experiences in Nazi Germany and under Communism. For over fifteen years, he spoke in area high schools and he was always willing to express his admiration for, and gratitude to the United States. He exhorted young people to become active voters because he had experienced first hand the horrors of dictatorship. In addition to speaking at area schools, Dr. Rottmann volunteered as a tour guide at the Roosevelt Mansion, was an active member of the Friends of Poughkeepsie Public Library, and a volunteer for Child Protective Services. Calling hours with a memorial service to celebrate this truly extraordinary life will be held on Friday, August 8th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at William G. Miller and Son Funeral Home, 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie. The family requests that donations be made to Adriance Memorial Library, 93 Market Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601 in memory of Hans Rottmann.

Richard R. Sabol
TUPELO, MS - Richard R. Sabol, 86, died Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at The Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, Miss., after a brief five week illness. He was born April 5, 1922, in Yonkers, New York. He was a swim team member at his Yonkers high school in the late 1930's. In time of peace he was a kind hearted friend and gentleman, but in time of war he was a soldier. During World War II, he served as Line Foreman Army Sergeant in the Signal Corps in the 988th Signal Service Battalion. He served four years in the military campaigns in India, China, and Burma. He received three battle stars and service plaques. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, the American Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans chapters in New York, Florida, and New Mexico. In 1977 he retired after 32 years as a Lieutenant Correctional Officer with the New York State Department of Corrections. He loved his wife and family, good conversations with family and friends, gardening, listen to big band music and helping his church and other Christian service organizations. He contributed financially to many Christian organizations over the past 45 years. He was a smart, self educated man with many friends who benefitted from his kindness and generosity through the years. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, August 8, 2008, at Bethel Baptist Church in Hopewell Junction, New York. His ashes will be laid to rest at the church cemetery there. Pastor Ralph Verdu will conduct the service. Survivors include his beloved wife of 61 years, Dolores Gamba Sabol; one daughter, Jean Sabol Hastings (David) of Tupelo; one son, David Lawrence Sabol of Beacon, New York; two grandsons, David Warner Hastings and Jonathan Sabol Hastings, both of Tupelo; one step-brother, John Matteo of Fishkill, New York; and one step-sister, Emma Marsh of Connecticut. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Gideons International, PO Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214.
