Terry Waffle
Terry Waffle, 53, of Tacoma, Wash. died Tuesday, March 27, [2001] at the VA hospital in Washington after a long illness.

He was born on Nov. 22, 1947 in Gloversville, the son of Barbara Waffle of Gloversville and the late Kenneth Waffle Sr. He attended Gloversville schools and served in the Army and later resided in Tacoma.

Survivors include two sons, Terry Waffle Jr. and Jamie Waffle of Washington; two daughters, Heidi Sweet and Candie Shepperd of Washington; three brothers, Kenneth Waffle Jr. of Seguin, Texas, David Waffle of Washington, Richard Waffle of Gloversville, and predeceased by a brother, Raymond Waffle; six sisters, Marion Sleezer, Carol Gray, Patricia Morse and Linda Hickok of Gloversville, Barbara Hobbs and Beckie Thompson of Seguin, Texas. Other survivors include his maternal grandmother, Margaret Brott of Johnstown; seven grandchildren; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

A military memorial service will be held in Washington. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Robert Aldridge
Robert Aldridge, 71, of Gloversville, died Wednesday at Nathan Littauer Hospital.

He was born on July 4, 1929 in Nassau, Long Island, the son of Robert and Vivian Houghton Aldridge. He attended Nassau, Long Island schools and later moved to Gloversville in 1996.

He was employed by Lexington Center Day Treatment Program in Gloversville.

He is survived by one brother, William H. Aldridge of Nassau, Long Island.

Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 10 a.m. The Rev. R.W. Williams will officiate. Spring interment will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to Lexington Center, Gloversville.

Odion 'O.D.' Archer Jr.
Odion "O.D." Archer Jr., 83, of Archer Road, died Thursday morning at home following a short illness.

He was born on March 9, 1918 in Halifax County, N.C., one of 14 children to Odion and Ellen Dickens Archer. He was educated there and moved with his family to Richmond, Va. Mr. Archer moved to Brooklyn in 1941 and then to Broadalbin in 1970.

Mr. Archer, along with his wife, owned and operated the former Archer's Grove in Broadalbin since 1970. He retired in 1986.

Mr. Archer attended Peoples AME Zion Church in Gloversville and the Johnstown AME Zion Church.

He was a member and past worshipful master of the Mount Lebanon Masonic Lodge 33 of Saratoga Springs and obtained the 32nd degree. Mr. Archer was a member of the Sacandaga Lodge IBPOEW 1462 of Gloversville and was the chief antler of the Capital City Council 95 for several years.

In February 1947, he married the former Clarisy Hastic Archer. She died June 17, 2000.

Survivors include two daughters, Dolores Archer Patterson of Raleigh, N.C. and Lillian Archer Johnson of Broadalbin; four sisters, Margaret Hines of Rocky Mount, N.C., Violet Whitaker and Irene Moore, both of Baltimore, Md. and Zelia Powell of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, 38 W. Main St., Broadalbin, where the Elks ritual will be conducted at 4 p.m. and the Masonic ritual will follow. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 12, at Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Scotland Neck, N.C. Burial will take place Friday, April 13, in Haynesworth Cemetery, Sumter, S.C. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Kidney Donor Foundation in care of the funeral home.

Charles Finkle

Charles Finkle, 87, of 24th St., Troy, died Thursday morning, April 5, [2001] at Boca Community Hospital, Boca Raton, Fla.

He was born and raised in Gloversville and moved to Troy in 1945. He had been the founder of the Finkle Distributor Co. and had been the sole proprietor of Wustefeld Candy Co. still actively working until earlier this year.

He was a member of Temple Beth El in Troy, B'nai B'rith and the Shriners.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Solomon Finkle; three sons, Arthur Finkle and his wife, Jackie Eskin of Fairfield, Conn., Bruce Finkle and his wife, Lisa of Delmar and Robert Finkle and his wife, Lauren, also of Delmar and a daughter, Judy Robins and her husband, Fred of Manhattan. He is also survived by two brothers, Harry Finkle of Schenectady and Leon Finkle of Gloversville. Grandfather of Eric and Karen Robins, Michele and Dana Finkle, Benjamin, Evan and Brianna Finkle and Joshua, Justin and Jessica Finkle. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Abe Finkle.

Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at Temple Beth El, 411 Hoosick St., Troy. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Beth El or Hadassah. Funeral arrangements are by Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave., Albany.

Donald J. Sawyer
Donald J. Sawyer, age 83, of 7 Charleston Circle, Englewood, Fla., died Saturday at Heartland Rehabilitation Center, Sarasota, Fla.

Mr. Sawyer was born on June 2, 1917 in Gloversville, the son of James and Sara Abbey Sawyer. He graduated from Gloversville High School and attended the former Gloversville Business School.

He served in the Army Quarter Master Corps during World War II in Europe, Italy and north Africa.

After the war he returned home and entered the real estate business with his father. He continued the operation of Sawyer Real Estate in Gloversville for nearly 40 years.

Mr. Sawyer followed writing all of his adult life and published two books. His first book was "They Came to Sacandaga", a story about Godfrey Shew, a settler of the Fish House area. His second book, "Shoo Fly" was a collection of folklore stories. His poetry, folklore, and articles about notable people appeared in numerous New York state, Florida and national publications.

Mr. Sawyer was an active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, where he served in various capacities. His past community involvement included the Gloversville Lions Club, YMCA, Fulton County Historical Society and Gloversville Free Library Board of Directors.

He was married to Charlotte A. Finch in 1945, who died in 1971. He is survived by his second wife, Dean Baringer Hyde, whom he married in 1976. Also surviving are his sons, Richard F. Sawyer of Seattle, Wash. and David F. Sawyer of Olympia, Wash.; his step-daughters, Marilyn Hyde Pennington of Walton, N.Y. and Carol Hyde Warren of Englewood, Fla.; his sister, Marion Harney of Lake George, N.Y.; one grandson; nine step-grandchildren; two nephews; one niece and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Gloversville. The Rev. Tom Davis will officiate. Interment will take place at a later date at Broadalbin Mayfield Rural Cemetery, Broadalbin. Memorial contributions may be made to first Congregational United Church of Christ, 31 E. Fulton St.; Gloversville Free Library, 58 E. Fulton St.; or Fulton County Historical Society, Gloversville.

Jean E. Bressard
Jean E. Bressard, 62, of Gloversville died March 30, 2001. Surviving are her husband, Dale, and three children.

Calling hours will be Sunday at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass is Monday at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Massena. Burial in Calvary Cemetery.

Helena M. Oaksford
Miss Helena M. Oaksford, 84, died Friday evening at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville. She had been a resident of the Getman Memorial Home for three years.

She was born Aug. 31, 1916, in Johnstown, the daughter of Roscoe and Emma Hinn Oaksford, and attended Gloversville schools. She was first employed at the former Martin and Naylor Department Store and later as an office clerk at Grandoe Glove Co., Gloversville.

Miss Oaksford was a member of the Fremont Street United Methodist Church and its Wesleyan Circle, and the Cayadutta Chapter # 166 Order of the Eastern Star, Gloversville.

She is survived by her sister, Vivian O. Fisher, and her husband, Richard C. Fisher of Gloversville; her nephews, David R. Fisher and his wife, Linda, of Gloversville, and Edwin W. Fisher and his wife, Sara, of Columbia, S.C. Her grandnieces are Kristin Fisher Komarinski, Karen Fisher, Robyn Fisher and Barrett Fisher. She was pre-deceased by her stepfather, Harry J. Bushouer.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. A private funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at the convenience of the family with the Rev. Douglas G. Lathrop officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Getman Memorial Home, 15 East State St., or the Fremont Street United Methodist Church, 17 Fremont St., Gloversville, NY 12078.

Richard S. Arthur
Richard S. Arthur, 98, of Keyes Avenue, Niskayuna, died Friday morning at Ellis Hospital after being stricken at home. He was born on June 23, 1902, to Bradford and Minnie Simmons Arthur in Gloversville.

He graduated from Gloversville High School as valedictorian from the class of 1920. He graduated from Union College in 1924 with a B.S. in electrical engineering. Then he graduated from the three-year G.E. Company advanced engineering course.

Mr. Arthur worked three years with the G.E. Railway Department in Erie, Pa., 10 years in Philadelphia as a railway engineer, principally on the Penn Railroad electrification. He received his professional engineer's license in 1936. He then worked 15 years in the G.E. Federal and Marine Department in Schenectady, supervising many government wartime contracts and assisting in the conversion of the Panama Canal power system from 25 to 60 Hertz. He then worked 12 years in the G.E. large motor generator department as manager of marketing administration, product service and personnel development.

Mr. Arthur retired in 1967 after 43 years of service. He was an evening professor of electrical engineering for three years at Drexel Institute, 15 years in the Schenectady Chamber of Commerce and three years as chairman of the Highway Development Committee.

He served 25 years on the Niskayuna Zoning Board of Appeals, most of the time as chairman. He worked five years with Boulton Realty in Schenectady as a licensed professional engineer and appraiser of machinery and equipment.

Mr. Arthur served as president of the Visiting Nurse Service Association of Schenectady for two years. He was a consultant for three years on the New York State EAST Program (Energy Advisory Service to Industry). He was a member of First Reformed Church of Schenectady, where he was a deacon and an elder. He was a life member of Institute of Electrical and Electronic engineers, G.E. Quarter Century Club, G.E. Elfun Society, Niskayuna Rotary Club, General Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Mohawk Club of Schenectady.

He was a former member of the Mohawk Golf Club, the Edison Club, Schenectady Curling Club, National Ordinance Association (now the National Defense Preparedness Association), National Society of Professional Engineers and Theta Delta Chi Fraternity.

His wife of 68 years, Ruth Wemple Arthur, died Dec. 15, 1998. He is survived by two daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Norton of Glenville, and Ruth "Dixie" Jeffries of New Orleans; one son, Richard W. Arthur, of Charlton; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Reformed Church of Schenectady. Memorial contributions may be made in Richard's name to First Reformed Church of Schenectady, 8 N. Church St., Schenectady, N. Y. 12305. Interment is in First Reformed Church Columbarium. Arrangements are by the Jones Funeral Home, 1503 Union St., Schenectady.
