Willard Eastman
Mr. Willard Eastman, 88 years old, of Gloversville, died Tuesday [February 27, 2001] at Montgomery Meadows, where he had been a patient for the past month. Mr. Eastman had resided at the Feather Bed Adult Home for the past two years.

He was born on Nov. 25, 1912 in Gloversville, the son of Leonard and Lillian Cole Eastman.

Willard was employed as a laborer for the former G. Levor & Co. Inc., Gloversville.

He was married to the former Laura Rowback. She died in 1985.

Mr. Eastman is survived by four stepsons, Robert Carroll of Mayfield, John Rowback of Jacksonville, Fla., Richard Rowback of Broadalbin and William Rowback of Meco; one stepdaughter, Marsha Taino of Gloversville; six brothers, Baryey Spencer of Broadalbin, Harold Spencer of Lakeside, Calif., Russell Spencer of Tennessee, Charles Spencer of Liverpool, N.Y., Carl Spencer of Pennsylvania and George Spencer of Wells; two sisters, Irma Draffen of Northville and Blanche Hayes of Johnstown; several step-grandchildren and step-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home Inc., 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. Burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Amsterdam.

Lt. Col. Harold A. Fancher
Lt. Col. Harold A. Fancher, 82, died suddenly Jan. 22, [2001] in Tucson, Ariz.

He was born on Feb. 8, 1914 in Gloversville.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ruth "Toni" Fancher; one sister, Helen Young of Johnstown; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service with military honors was held in Tucson.

Adelbert W. Shelmandine Jr.
Adelbert W. Shelmandine Jr., age 73, of North Second Avenue, Broadalbin, died Wednesday morning [February 28, 2001] in the emergency room at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after being stricken at home.

Mr. Shelmandine was born on Oct. 16, 1927 in Amsterdam, the son of Adelbert and Bertha Smith Shelmandine.

He lived in Amsterdam most of his life and had resided in Broadalbin for the past 20 years.

He was employed at Adirondack Knitting Co., Amsterdam.

He is survived by his wife, Jeannette Hasenfuss Shelmandine, whom he married on Sept. 14, 1947. Other survivors include his children, William L. Shelmandine of Broadalbin, Michael D. Shelmandine and Kelley M. Munson of Mayfield, Deborah A. Sponable of Tennessee and Andrea L. Neuls of Gloversville; brother, Alan Shelmandine of Gloversville; sisters, Erma Blackwood of Johnstown and Charlotte Santo of Amsterdam; also 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandchildren Thomas Munson and Tammy Clemons.

There will be no services or visitation. Cremation will take place at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Memorial contributions may be made to Broadalbin Volunteer Ambulance Corps, PO Box 23, Broadalbin, NY 12025. Arrangements are by Jeffords & Stewart Funeral Home, 85 W. Main St., Broadalbin.

Irving S. Plummer
Irving S. Plummer, 76, of Trevet Road, Galway, died Tuesday, Feb. 27, [2001] at home.

He was born on March 7, 1924 in Ballston Spa, the son of Clyde and Bertha Plummer.

He worked at the Pan American Leather Mill for many years.

He was a past member of the Providence Fire Department.

He was predeceased by a sister, Wilda Harris; and two brothers, Claude and Albert Plummer.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Plummer; daughter, Bertha Killenberger of Galway; two sons, Donald Plummer of Galway and David Plummer of Amsterdam; three sisters, Minnie Simmons of Schaghticoke, Ruth Granger of Orlando, Fla. and Charlotte Stockwell of Apopka, Fla.; two brothers, Earl "Pete" Plummer of Mount Dora, Fla. and Raymond Plummer of Galway; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Armer Funeral Home Inc., 39 E. High St., Ballston Spa. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Gladys J. Hoefs
Mrs. Gladys J. Hoefs, 77, of Carmichael Street, Amsterdam, died Thursday evening at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital. She had been a patient of the Montgomery Meadows for a short time.

She was born on Sept. 5, 1923 in Amsterdam, the daughter of Clarence and Adelia Peters Hartig. She was a 1941 graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School and was a graduate of the Amsterdam School of Practical Nursing, and she later received an Activities Degree from Michigan State University.

Mrs. Hoefs was a LPN and was employed in the Pediatrics Department of the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital for eight years. She was later employed as a medication nurse and later as an activities director for the Montgomery County Infirmary, known today as the Montgomery County Meadows, retiring in 1982.

She was a former member of the BPW of Amsterdam, former member and past president of the CSEA of Montgomery County. She was also a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam.

She was married on April 1, 1946 to Arthur W. Hoefs, who died in 1981. She was also predeceased by two sons, Richard Hoefs, who died in 1992, and Kenneth Hoefs, who died in 2000.

Mrs. Hoefs is survived by one son, Robert Hoefs of Amsterdam; three daughters, Adelia Guisti, Holly Aldi and Kim Togaila, all of Amsterdam; one sister, Catherine Latvis of Amsterdam; 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave, Amsterdam. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Barbara Floryshak officiating. The burial will take place at the Fairview Cemetery in Amsterdam.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Amsterdam Memorial Hospital Foundation,or to the United Presbyterian Church in Amsterdam, care of the funeral home.

Joseph Lopuch
Mr. Joseph Lopuch, 87, of Stoner Trail Road, Fonda, died Friday at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a long illness.

He was born on March 3, 1913 in Amsterdam, the son of Michael and Katherine Lopuch. Mr. Lopuch attended Amsterdam schools. As a young man he worked on the family farm in Fort Hunter and was later employed as a weaver at the former Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Mill, Amsterdam. For 22 years he worked as a buoy tender for the New York State Barge Canal System until his retirement in 1977. For several years Mr. Lopuch was a member of the local country western band "Pals of the Saddle."

Survivors include his wife Shirley Place Lopuch, whom he married in 1942; one brother, Stephen Lopuch of Fort Hunter; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

There will be no calling hours. Cremation will be in Vale Crematory, Schenectady. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Amsterdam, 40 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam, NY 12010. Arrangements are by the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main St., Johnstown, NY 12095.
