Beatrice M. Britton
Mrs. Beatrice M. Britton, 86, of Chapel Hill, N.C., a native of Johnstown, died Sunday at the University of North Carolina Hospital after a long illness.

She was born on Oct. 5, 1914 in Johnstown, the daughter of William and Fanny Spoll Buchner. Mrs. Britton lived in Dallas, Texas from 1941 to 1944; Rochester from 1944 to 1954; Atlanta, Ga. from 1954 to 1972; Clearwater, Fla. from 1973 to 1989; and had resided in Chapel Hill, N.C. since 1989. She was a 1931 graduate of Johnstown High School and the former Gloversville Business School.

She was employed as a secretary, first at Proctor and Gamble in Texas and then at Remington Rand Corp. She then worked as an executive secretary to the marketing director of Eastman Kodak Co., both in Rochester and Atlanta, from 1944 until she retired in 1972.

Mrs. Britton was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and St. Monica Chapter 486, Order of the Eastern Star, both of Johnstown; the Pilot Club and the Women's Club, both of Atlanta, and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

She is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward H. Britton; and one sister, Florence B. Stevens, who died on June 30, 2000.

There will be no calling hours. Services will be private and conducted at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. Arrangements are by Ehle Funeral Home, Johnstown.

Alvira Catanzaro Norelli
Mrs. Alvira Catanzaro Norelli, 92, of Gloversville, died Tuesday at home after being stricken.

She was born on Sept. 21, 1908 in Gloversville, the daughter of Philip and Mary Evangelista Catanzaro. Mrs. Norelli was educated in Gloversville schools.

She was employed at the former Bachmo Postman Glove Co. She also worked at several area department stores, including Green's, McLellan's and Lerner's, and retired in 1974 from Argersinger's in Gloversville.

Mrs. Norelli was a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church and its Women's Society; the Ida McGinnis Senior Citizen Club, the 55 Plus Senior Citizen Club, and the Nathan Littauer Hospital Auxiliary, all of Gloversville; and the 50 Plus Senior Citizens, Johnstown.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Norelli of Allendale, N.J. and Joseph Norelli of Havelock, N.C.; one daughter, Anne Ciocca of Liverpool, Onondaga County; two brothers, Umbert "Bert" Catanzaro and Philip Catanzaro, both of Gloversville; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

On Aug. 23, 1930, she married Joseph Norelli, who died on Sept. 11, 1976.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. A prayer service will be conducted at 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. At 9:30 a.m., a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church. The Rev. Donald Czelusniak, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will take place in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown, in the spring.

Catherine Valdi
Mrs. Catherine Valdi, 92, of Amsterdam, died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a long illness.

She was born on Sept. 16, 1908 in Naples, Italy, the daughter of Ralph and Dorothy Friello Durante. Mrs. Valdi was educated in Rotterdam Junction.

She was employed at the former Mohasco Corp. and later at Carl Shoe Co., both of Amsterdam.

Mrs. Valdi was a communicant of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Amsterdam, and a member of Wednesday Niters Bowling League at Super 30 Lanes, Amsterdam.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Valdi, who died in 1972.

Survivors include one son, Anthony Valdi of Mariaville Lake; one daughter, Marie Fahey of Amsterdam; one brother, Anthony Durante of Rotterdam Junction; two sisters, Dolores Barney of Greenfield Center, Saratoga County, and Antoinette Smith of Scotia; one grandson and one great-granddaughter.

Calling hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Riley Mortuary, 110 Division St., Amsterdam. A service will be conducted at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the mortuary. At 9:15 a.m., a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 58 Grove St., Amsterdam. Burial will take place in St. Michael's Cemetery.

Phyllis J. Davis
Mrs. Phyllis J. Davis, 79, of the Sanford home for Elderly Women, Amsterdam, died Wednesday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.

She was born on July 8, 1921 in Amsterdam, the daughter of Samuel and Anna Geddis Thompson. Mrs. Davis lived in Amsterdam until 1956 when she moved to Utica. She moved to Florida in 1978 and returned to Amsterdam in 1991. She was a 1938 graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School.

She was employed for several years as a secretary for Oakly Cooper at Bigelow Sanford Carpet Co., Amsterdam.

Survivors include two sons, Brian T. Davis of Tucson, Ariz. and Mark S. Davis of Wilmington, Essex County; one daughter, Christine Bridges of Soperton, Ga.; one sister, Elisabeth Ludwig of Amsterdam; three grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

In February 1950, she married William R. Davis, who died in July 1989.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. Cremation will take place at Vale Cemetery Crematorium, Schenectady.

Edwin K. Hardies
Mr. Edwin K. Hardies, 74, of Amsterdam, died Tuesday at Albany Medical Center.

He was born on Oct. 9, 1926 in Amsterdam, the son of Kenneth and Marian McGuigan Hardies. Mr. Hardies attended the former Guy Park Avenue School, Amsterdam. He was a 1944 graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School, where he played in the City Intramural Basketball League.

He worked for the Army Supply Depot, making exact replicas of airplanes for the war effort.

He entered the Navy in 1944 and attended the Electronic & Fire Control School, Fort Lauderdale, and graduated first in his class. He later attended Advance Technical School, Rhode Island, and graduated with honors. He sailed on several ships and taught military ordinance control during his Naval duty.

He then attended the Utica campus branch of Syracuse University, Union College and RPI, Troy. He installed an atomic reactor for General Electric Co. in 1951. He again was called to serve in the Navy during the Korean War.

He opened Hardies Electric in 1959, contracting to work on various businesses. He became one of the owners of the Mohawk Valley Magazine.

He served as commissioner of Public Works under Mayor John P. Gomulka for four years. He served as an elected water commissioner for the city and as commissioner.

He retired from city politics after eight years and continued to operate the family business with his son, Sean. He started the Highland Garden and the Holland Garden Apartments in 1970. As owner, he helped design and construct the project.

He and the late Dr. Thomas Weyl formed the ET Real Estate Management Co. and the New Netherlands Real Estate Co. in 1974. He oversaw the design, building and management of the Troy Medical Building for 12 years before he retired.

He was an avid sportsman. He played basketball and golf, and enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Mr. Hardies was a 23-year member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church; a member of Welcome Lodge, 829 Free and Accepted Masons; Elks Lodge 101, Amsterdam, the Shriners, Rotary International, and the Class of 1944 Reunion Committee. He was president of the Greenhill Cemetery Association.

Survivors include his wife, the former Nora Mae Koch, whom he married on Aug. 30, 1947; two sons, Dr. Michael J. Hardies and Sean K. Hardies, both of Amsterdam; four daughters, Nora Sue DiManno of the town of Amsterdam, Colleen Medwid of Amsterdam, Kathy LaConte of Bradenton, Fla. and Kelly Diamond of Amsterdam; one brother, John "Jack" Hardies of Amsterdam; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be 4:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., Amsterdam. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam. The Rev. William E. Siiss, pastor, will officiate. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, Fort Johnson.

Jacenia L. Heiser
Mrs. Jacenia L. Heiser, 68, of Canajoharie, died Wednesday at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, after a short illness.

She was born on Nov. 16, 1932 in the town of Danube, Herkimer County, the daughter of Albert and Beatrice VanDusen Sweet. Mrs. Heiser attended Fort Plain schools and was a lifelong area resident.

She and her husband worked on the family farm. She was also a homemaker.

Mrs. Heiser was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, East Stone Arabia, and the Women's Committee of the Farm Bureau, Fonda.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Heiser, whom she married on Dec. 1, 1951; three sons, Stephen Heiser of Fort Plain, and Jason Heiser and Scott Heiser, both of Canajoharie; four brothers, Garry Sweet of Little Falls, Berneal Sweet of Fonda, and Dalbert Sweet and Kevin Sweet, both of Fort Plain; four grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Lenz & Betz Funeral Home, 69 Otsego St., Canajoharie. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Fort Plain Cemetery in the spring.

Joseph F. Kobas
Mr. Joseph F. Kobas, 83, of Tribes Hill, died Wednesday at the Wells House Skilled Nursing Facility, Johnstown.

He was born on Nov. 7, 1917 in Amsterdam, the son of Joseph and Mary Karp Kobas. Mr. Kobas attended area schools and was a lifelong area resident.

He was employed for 30 years as a wireman at General Electric Co., Schenectady, retiring in 1979.

Mr. Kobas attended St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church, Amsterdam. He was a member of IUE Local 301, Schenectady.

He played various instruments with several area bands, including the Dusty Miller Band in the Amsterdam area.

Survivors include his wife, the former Irene Czelusniak; one son, Joseph P. Kobas of Perth; one daughter, Joanne Ossenfort of Indianapolis, Ind.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

No services are scheduled at this time. Arrangements are by Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, Amsterdam.
