Harry A. Carpenter Sr.
Harry A. Carpenter Sr., 74, of Railroad Street, Fort Hunter, passed away Sunday at his home.
He was born on Jan. 18, 1927 in Fonda, a son of Milton and Luella Hoffman Carpenter. He lived here all his life and attended local schools.
Mr. Carpenter was employed for many years in the construction business in the area, and Karg Brothers leather mill until he retired.
During World War II and later the Korean War, he served with the Navy.
Mr. Carpenter was of the Roman Catholic faith and was a member of the VFW Post 942, the Improved Order of Redman Tribe 569, the Cherry Valley Fish and Game Club and past member of Fort Hunter Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his beloved wife, the former Sharon L. Warner, whom he married on June 6, 1981; seven sons, Milton Carpenter of Schenectady, Harry A. Carpenter Jr. of Parsippany, Joseph Carpenter of Glen, Andrew, Jeffrey, Gary and JayDee Carpenter, all of Fort Hunter; four daughters, Roseann Brooks of Tatum, N.M., Geraldine Guberski of Hollysprings, N.C., Nancy Wells of Grand Prairie, Texas and Theresa Moore of Glen; seven sisters, Gertrude Potter of Hope, N.Y., Doris Hitchcock of Glen, Helen Quackenbush of Wayne, N.Y., Grace Blair and Phyliss Calkins, both of Fultonville, Rhonda Morse of Hudson Falls and Lena Martuscello of Gloversville; two brothers, Edward Carpenter of Florida and Jack Carpenter of Georgia; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Michael in 1957, a brother, Kenneth and a sister, Geraldine Carpenter.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, where the VFW post will conduct a service at 7 p.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Wade Prime will officiate. Interment will take place at Cangahnawaga Cemetery, Fonda. Contributions may be made to Fort Hunter Volunteer Fire Department or VFW Post 942 in care of the funeral home.

Earlston M. Giles Jr.
Earlston M. Giles Jr., 66, of Pearl Street, Hudson Falls, died Monday, Oct. 15, [2001] at Samaritan Hospital, Troy.
He was born on Nov. 7, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of the late Earlston M. Giles Sr. and Ethel (Lett) Giles.
Earlston was a former member of North Creek Rotary Club, a member of Miami University Alumni Association in Oxford, Ohio and a member of American Institute of Certified Public Accountants of NYS.
In his youth, he was a Golden Gloves boxer in Cincinnati. He also enjoyed playing tennis and handicapping horse races.
He loved the Adirondack Mountains and was an outdoor enthusiast.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva (Lynch) Giles of Hudson Falls; a son, Gregory Giles of Seattle, Wash.; three daughters, Jennifer Giles and Tracy Giles, both of Seattle, Wash., and Jacqueline Schlate and her husband, Stephen of Suffern, N.Y.; a stepdaughter, Belinda Bradley of Glens Falls; and a brother, Gale Giles of North Hampton, Mass.
Besides his parents, a son-in-law, Jerry Bradley, predeceased him.
At Mr. Giles request, there will be no calling hours. The family suggests that donations be made in Earlston's memory to the American Cancer Society, 380A Glen St., Glens Falls, NY 12801. Arrangements are under the direction of M.B. Kilmer Funeral Home, 136 Main St., South Glens Falls. Funeral service and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Kay Karlsen
Kay Karlsen, 45, of Gloversville, died Sunday at Albany Medical Center.
She was born on Nov. 27, 1956 in New Jersey, the daughter of Robert and Phyllis Coger McElwaine. She graduated from New York City schools and later moved to Gloversville in September 2000.
She was employed as a librarian for New Hyde Park School District and later volunteered for New York City schools.
She is survived by her husband, Richard Karlsen, whom she married on May 17, 1989; two daughters, Tiffany Fosson of Deland, Fla. and Megan Karlsen of Gloversville; two brothers, David McElwaine of North Carolina and Scott McElwaine of Long Island; one sister, Heather Flowers of Long Island; and one granddaughter, Sarah Fosson.
Arrangements are by Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville. A memorial service will be held in Long Island at the convenience of the family.

Margaret K. Smith
Mrs. Margaret K. Smith, 91, of 31 W. Madison Ave., Johnstown, N.Y., the wife of former Fulton County Surrogate A. Page Smith, passed away Monday, Oct. 15, [2001] at her home.
She was born on Nov. 13, 1909 in Albany, the daughter of Charles E. and Margaret Miller Koelsch.
Mrs. Smith was a 1927 graduate of Albany High School and was employed for 10 years by the American Surety Co. of Albany. On Feb. 5, 1938, she was united in marriage to Johnstown City Judge and Recorder A. Page Smith. Judge Smith served as city judge from 1937 to 1953 and as surrogate from 1955 to 1966. He died on Sept. 12, 1976.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Students' Club, the Fulton County Children's Committee, officer of Johnstown Hospital and Wells House Auxiliary, the former Welfare Guild, Johnstown Women of the Moose and was a member and deacon of First Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by two sons, David C. Smith and his wife, JoAnne Brockmyer Smith of Pinehurst, N.C., attorney Peter K. Smith and his wife, Jane Borgese Smith of Johnstown; and a granddaughter, Diana Smith.
There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Johnstown, N.Y. Cremation will take place at Leatherstocking Crematory, Cherry Valley, N.Y. Arrangements are by Ehle Funeral Home, Johnstown.

Robert F. Wilson
Robert F. Wilson, 67, of Fifth Avenue, Gloversville, died Oct. 7 [2001] at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady following a brief illness.
He was born on March 31, 1934 in Gloversville, the son of the late Harold and Nancy Griffith-Wilson. He was educated in Gloversville and Mayfield schools. Early in life he was a meat cutter for the former Acme Market and for the past 40 years he had been president of Duff and Wilson Paving Contractors.
He was a Korean War veteran in the Navy. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Indian Oven Hunting Club in Bleecker.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Duff Wilson; one son, Marcus D. Wilson and his wife, Eileen, and one granddaughter, Brieanne Wilson, all of Gloversville. He was predeceased by two brothers, Harold (Dick) Wilson and Howard Wilson.
There were no calling hours. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda. Arrangements are by Kobuskie-Konik Funeral Home, 147 Bleecker St., Gloversville.

Jemal Legesse DeSantis
Jemal Legesse De Santis died Sept. 11, [2001] in New York, N.Y.
He was born on Dec. 30, 1972 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He came to the United States at the age of 11 in 1984 and attended Gloversville schools thereafter, graduating from GHS in 1990. He studied first at Fulton-Montgomery Community College and later attended North Carolina State University, where he majored in business and graduated with a BA degree in 1998.
At the time of his death he resided in Jersey City, N.J. with his brother, Yassin Legesse Johnson, and worked in lower Manhattan at 1 World Trade Center. He was employed in securities transactions for Cantor - Fitzgerald.
He is survived by his mother, Anmarie DeSantis of Palm Beach; father and stepmother, Vincent DeSantis and Pamla Jeffers of Gloversville; brothers, Kemal Legesse DeSantis of New York City, Dorian B. Brumaghim and James C. DeSantis, both of Gloversville. He is also survived by his natural mother, Duriti Hirpo, of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; his elder brother, Mohammed Legesse of Gloversville, and several natural brothers and sisters, both of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and the United States. His natural father is the late Haji Legesse Sherefa of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
A memorial service will be held at the Gloversville High School auditorium on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 6 p.m. The public is invited.

James T. Brown Sr.
Mr. James T. Brown Sr., 53, of Walton Place, Scotia, N.Y., died Sunday, Oct. 14, [2001] at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, N.Y., after being stricken at home.
He was born in Staten Island, N.Y., the son of Mathew and Doris Borg Brown.
He was a Navy veteran and served in Vietnam.
Mr. Brown was a New York City police officer and retired in 1984.
Mr. Brown was a member of the VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Nora Brooks Brown, whom he married on July 13, 1999; sons, James T. Brown Jr. of Gloversville, N.Y. and Thomas V. Brown of Wells, N.Y.; stepson, Paul Foster of Northville, N.Y.; daughter, Lori Brown Gosson of Wells; stepdaughters, Katherine Foster of Upland, Calif., Lynette Foster of Gloversville and Tiffany Babcock of Wells; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Matthew Brown.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Northville Funeral Service Inc., 401 Bridge St. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Wells. Burial will take place at St. Ann's Cemetery, Wells. Memorial contributions may be made to NYPD and FDNY Widows and Children's Fund, PO Box 3713, Grand Central Station, New York, NY 10163.
