Lucille M. Solar

Mrs. Lucille M. Solar, 79, of West Main Street, Johnstown, died Sunday, May 13, at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, after a long illness.

She was born on June 3, 1921 in Phoenix, N.Y., the daughter of Arnold and Emma Roberts.

Lucille was a graduate of Phoenix High School.

She worked for several area glove shops until 1969 when she purchased the Tip Top Tavern in Gloversville. She operated the tavern until her retirement in 1984.

Lucille was a member of the Johnstown Women's Bowling League for over 50 years, at one time holding the title of president and carrying the high average for the league.

In September 1947 she became secretary of the Johnstown Women's Bowling Association, still holding that position at the time of her death. She also served 10 years as treasurer.

Lucille had bowled in city tournaments since 1947 and bowled in many state bowling tournaments. She attended 43 New York State Women's Bowling conventions, representing the Johnstown association.

In 1978 she was inducted into the Fulton County Bowlers Hall of Fame.

On Sept. 26, 1944, she married Edward Solar, who died Jan. 17.

Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown, where funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Jack Millard will officiate. Burial will take place at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Johnstown.

Memorial contributions may be made to Johnstown Women's Bowling Association Scholarship Fund, c/o Key Bank, 6 Market St., Amsterdam, NY 12010, or to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Boulevard, Suite 1010, Rockville, Md. 20852-9813.

Rose Horning
Monday, May 14, 2001
Rose Horning, 94, of Sinclair Road, Edinburg, died May 2 at Wells Nursing Home, Johnstown, after a long illness.

Mrs. Horning was born on Nov. 16, 1906 in Little Neck, Long Island.

She was the owner of Orendoga Motel in Northville for many years.

Mrs. Horning was a communicant of St. Francis Roman Catholic Church, Northville.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Edward Horning, died in 1977.

A service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Northville Funeral Home, 401 Bridge St. Burial will take place at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Northville.

Lieselotte W. Koelbl

Mrs. Lieselotte "Lottie" W. Koelbl, 79, of Walnut Street, Canajoharie, died Saturday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

She was born on April 2, 1922 in Zweibruken, Germany, the daughter of Wilhelm Carbone and Anna Lydia Herkenrath. She was educated in Wurzburg, Germany. She studied nursing.

Mrs. Koelbl worked in area nursing homes for a time. In 1961 she fulfilled her desire to build her own nursing home in Palatine Bridge. Mrs. Koelbl and her husband owned and operated Palatine Nursing Home until 1985. She retired in 1985.

She immigrated from Germany and in 1951 she became a United States citizen. She was an area resident for over 45 years.

She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Canajoharie.

Survivors include two daughters, Marguerite L. Brandow, Dolgeville and Lisa C. Emden, Ephratah; two sons, Joseph F. Koelbl of Palatine Bridge and John L. Koelbl of Canajoharie; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

On April 10, 1948 she married John Koelbl in Germany and he died Feb. 22, 1999.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapel of Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home, 20 Otsego St., Canajoharie, where a prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. At 10 a.m. a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Sts. Peter and Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Cliff Street, Canajoharie. The Rev. William J. Gaffigan will officiate. Burial will take place at Sts. Peter and Paul's Cemetery, Canajoharie. Memorial contributions may be made to Mid County Volunteer Ambulance Service, PO Box 126, Canajoharie or the American Heart Association, c/o Houghtaling & Smith Funeral Home.

Matilda Warner

Matilda Warner, 93, died Friday evening at Orange County Residential Health Care Facility, Goshen, N.Y.

She was born on Oct. 29, 1907 in Union City, N.J., the daughter of John and Dorothy Brunner Meiller. Mrs. Warner attended Union City, N.J. schools and later moved to the Mayfield area where she resided most of her life.

Mrs. Warner worked in the glove industry for many years in the Mayfield area, retiring from the former Dickson Glove Co. of Mayfield.

Mrs. Warner was a member of Mayfield Central Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by one son, Richard Warner of Middletown, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Tammy Forrest of Nederland, Colo. and Kim-Lori Hendzel of Dallas, Texas; and four grandsons, Will Forrest, Gus Forrest, Bridger Hendzel and Cole Hendzel.

In 1965 Mrs. Warner was predeceased by her husband, Rupert Warner, whom she married in 1928. She was also predeceased by three brothers, James, Joseph and Charles Meiller; and by three sisters, Dorothy Bolton, Elizabeth Meyers and Adeline Parker.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hollenbeck Funeral Home, 4 Second Ave., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Kenneth Applegate, interim pastor of Mayfield Central Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Interment will take place at Union Rural Cemetery, Mayfield. Memorial contributions can be made to Alzheimer's Foundation or the Braeside Camp, 640 E. Main St., Middletown, N.Y. 10940.

Donald W. Rorick

Mr. Donald W. Rorick, 74, of Johnson Avenue, Johnstown, died Sunday at Nathan Littauer Hospital.

He was born on Jan. 12, 1927 in Gloversville and served in the Army during World War II in Italy.

He was employed by Crown Leather, Johnstown, until his retirement. He also was a freelance photographer for The Leader-Herald.

Mr. Rorick was a member of the Fulton County Sheriff's Association and the Sir William Johnson Fire Department.

He married Joyce M. Meyers on Oct. 16, 1948. She survives. Also surviving are his children, Sandra Pedrick of Gloversville, David Rorick of Caroga Lake, Ronald Rorick of Gloversville and Todd Rorick of Johnstown; his brother, William Fox of Wichita, Kan.; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by is son, Keith John Rorick; his sisters, Joyce Dingman, Janet Hayes and Vivian Wittman.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will take place at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.

Lillian Pfieffer James

Mrs. Lillian "Carol" Pfieffer James, 73, of Jay Street, Gloversville, died Tuesday morning at Nathan Littauer Hospital.

She was born on June 21, 1927 in Gloversville, the daughter of Fred and Mary Yuker Pfieffer.

She was a sales representative for the Watkins Sales Co. She enjoyed camping, ceramics, and flowers.

Mrs. James was a member of Cranberry Creek Community Church.

She is survived by her companion of many years, Gardiner Baurle and his son, Eric Baurle of Gloversville; also by a son, Donald F. Brockhum of Mayfield, a daughter, Rosemary Walters of Johnstown, 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several cousins

She was predeceased by her husband, Victor L. James.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home Inc., 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. Interment will take place at Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY 12211, or the American Heart Association, 440 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.
