John Joseph Palma
Wednesday, May 16, 2001
John Joseph (Buttsy) Palma, 69, of 30 N. Division St., St. Johnsville, passed away Monday, May 14, after a courageous battle with cancer; he was surrounded by the love of his family by his side.

John was born on April 16, 1932 in St. Johnsville, the son of the late John Joseph and Carmella (Terranova) Palma. Buttsy was a graduate of St. Johnsville High School Class of 1950, where he was class president, and recently celebrated the 50th reunion. He also attended Oswego State College.

He was united in marriage to Cora Lee Perry on June 5, 1955 in St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church by the Rev. Walter Burns. The coupled shared a blessed and loving union of many years.

From 1954 to 1966, Buttsy was owner and manager of Palma's Esso Station in St. Johnsville, which was built by his father. In 1966 to 1978 he served as town justice and town board member; he officiated many wedding ceremonies, most of them held in the gracious hospitality of his home. From 1971 to 1978 he was owner of the Serenity Mobile Home Park on Route 5 West, where he developed a 13-unit mobile home park and installed the water and sewer system for the park. Buttsy was also employed as superintendent of the Department of Public Works and Water Treatment Plant Operator, St. Johnsville, from 1966 until his retirement in 1992, serving the village for 26 years. A dedicated employee, Buttsy worked side by side with his men. Everyone always commented about his "being down in the hole."

Upon his retirement he served as clerk of works for the Averill Street reconstruction project and recent development of the Well Field. He was also consultant for various other projects. After completely retiring from the village he provided service to many customers with snow plowing in the winter and lawn care during the summer.

Deeply instilled in the Catholic faith, Mr. Palma was a very active member of St. Patrick's Church, where he served as eucharistic minister until his illness. He also served on the committee to repave the church's driveway. As a community-oriented individual he served the community of St. Johnsville in many ways; he was a member of the St. Johnsville Youth Center Advisory Board where he was president for five years, and helped with the formation of the Youth Center in 1974. He was president of the St. Johnsville Recycling program, a member of the Montgomery County Recycling Commission, and a member of the Seminar Planning Committee of New York State Department of Health, Amsterdam district.

Buttsy dedicated his entire life in service and caring for the need of the St. Johnsville residents. Along with working for the village his interest always involved improving the community. A great man whose outlook and compassion for others will be sadly missed by all that knew and loved him, John's constant demonstration of deep respect for his associates, friends and co-workers earned the esteem and admiration of all who knew him.

A man who took pride in his work ethic did not only exist in the job, but also in his ever day routine. He was also a gifted and respected athlete excelling in basketball, baseball and bowling, where he carried a semi-pro average in a local traveling league for many years. In his retirement, he especially enjoyed the camaraderie of his many friends in the game of golf.

As a very artistic person, he was noted for designing meticulously crafted birdhouses in the shapes of houses, gazebos, churches and other forms. He also sculpted creative accessories with a chain saw for his sister's bear collection. He also assisted his wife, Cora Lee, in her many creative endeavors and shared many special times with her.

He is survived by his beloved family, including his loving wife of almost 46 years, Cora Lee; a son, Rodney John Palma and wife, Denise of Apache Junction, Ariz.; a daughter, Lisa Marie Clemons and husband, Timothy of Meco; five cherished grandchildren, Diantha Lynn Palma, Jasper Rodd Palma and Zane Bernard Palma, all of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Shalane Marie Clemons, and Timothy John Clemons of Meco; two great-grandchildren, Zara Myst Wermager and Zekiel Rain Wermager of Ariz. Also surviving are his sister, Josephine Terricola, whom he idolized, and husband, Phillip of St. Johnsville; brother-in-laws, Joseph Perry of Odenton, Md., Richard Perry and wife, Connie of St. Petersburg, Fla.; four nieces and two nephews. John also leaves many special friends, too numerous to mention. Buttsy's eldest grandson, Zachary Beau Palma, passed away on Jan. 20., he was extremely proud of Zachary and was sadly affected by his passing.

Friends and relatives may visit with the family and pay their respects from 4 to 8 p.m. today, May 16, at Smith-Woody and Enea Funeral Home, 9 Center St., St. Johnsville. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 17, at the funeral home and at 11 a.m. from St. Patrick's Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated. Procession will follow to St. Johnsville Cemetery, where interment will take place. Remembrances may be made to St. Patrick's Church, S.A.V.A.C., Little Falls Hospital, or to a charity of one's choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Buttsy's family would like to thank the third-floor nurse, aides, respiratory therapists and other staff of the Little Falls Hospital for the loving care and empathy shown to John and his family. A special thank you to Drs. R. and S. Sodhi, Dr. Desai and his staff at Faxton Hospital Cancer Center in Herkimer.
